General :: Calculated Columns Based On Another Table
Aug 18, 2012
Is it possible to have a calculated column based on another table. i have a 1 to many table. the table that is the parent hold a start time. all of the 'many' have an individual time length. i would like a calculated column in the parent table showing the full length. is it possible or will i have to use an update query?
I am trying to run a make table query that involves using a linked table in Ms from a SharePoint list. However, a few columns I wish to include in my Make table query are calculated columns from the SharePoint list.
The make table query will not run saying "Calculated columns are not allowed in SELECT INTO statements".
Can any think of a solution or a potential work around to this?
I need to create a table with these columns in it.
I would like to know if the following is possible: I have a table, I have a form based on that table (datasheet view) and I would like for certain columns to visible or not based on the input on a Combobox (list of countries) that is based on another form.
I have searched on the web and I found that the following:
On a button based on the main menu form:
Code: Private Sub Go_Click() Dim stDocName As String Dim stOpen As String stOpen = Me!cboDest stDocName = "Datasheet" DoCmd.OpenForm stDocName, , , , , , stOpen
and then on the event "on open" of the form Datasheet I have inserted the following:
Code: Private Sub Form_Open(Cancel As Integer) Select Case OpenArgs Case "USA" Forms![Overflow]![Tasks].Visible = True Forms![Overflow]![Constant Number (Min)].Visible = True
[Code] ....
I have done it as a test, but it appears that it does not work. It opens the forms, but it does not hide or show the columns based on the option, it brings all the columns.
I know that it isn't usually best practise to store calculated fields in a table, but in my situation it is necessary, and I haven't really found a good answer for this after searching these and other forums.
Currently my database has one "Name" field (I didn't make it like this) which might look like this "Jonathan (John) Smith" Now I also have reason to grab the name like this "Smith, John" for other purposes.
I've set up a form for inputting new people with separate fields for firstname, preferredname, and lastname. I have the calculated fields:
(Later I will add in all the iif's for if there is no preferred name)
Upon finishing the form, the user hits Submit, and I would like to store the concatenated values into the table in their appropriate fields.
I can do this with a SQL INSERT INTO statement but I'd have to add all 25 or so fields from the form, and injecting user input directly into a SQL statement is not best practice either.
I need to populate a table with Grid reference values consisting of 6 figure integers, eastings and northings.
I am receiving/downloading the Grid Refs in a UK Grid Tile format, with 3, 4 or 5 figures preceded by letters.
E.g. SK 456 849, SP 6789 4356.
I have used some query functions and written a bit of VBA behind a form to convert the received coordinates into the full coords I want. The coordinates are now in unbound controls on a form, and I want to pass these back to a table so I can use the data for display purposes.
Ideally I want to link to the table from a GIS and autoupdate without having to open the database (my imported data is linked in to feed the database automatically).
I have done some searching and not found a method to pass the values into a table - What is my best way of doing this automatically?
I'm having problems importing a spreadsheet from Excel for a client.
They are using Access 2003 and Excel 2007, 3.5GB RAM
It works perfectly on my machine - Excel 2010 and Access 2007-2010, 4 GB RAM.
The file is imported in Excel 97-2003 format via a macro using the transferspreadsheet function.
It returns error 3274: "external table is not in the expected format."
There are 1488 rows and 71 columns in the spreadsheet and resulting table - in future additional columns may need to be added representing new critical data.
The interesting thing was that it worked fine on my machine. Then as a trial and error process I cut the file down to 26 columns and it worked fine. 52 columns also imported. But it gave up when there were 71 columns.
if 52 columns * 1488 rows =77,376 record worked, that's more than the magic number of 65,536. but it doesn't like 71*1488 = 105648 records. Is there a limit at 100,000, or some other number in between? I would have thought Access could hold/import much more than this.
but only one column which is called "Id_rodzajpracy" from
Code: tabela_zdrodlooffset = "tblOffset"
How could I modify red instruction to do inner join?
Code: Dim rec_GoraZlecenia As DAO.Recordset Dim rec_GoraZlecenia2 As DAO.Recordset Dim rec_GoraZlecenia3 As DAO.Recordset Dim tabela_docelowa As String Dim tabela_zrodlowa As String Dim tabela_zdrodlooffset As String Dim s As String
I am trying to change the data type of a field in a table from calculated to something else. It gives me the error "this data type cannot be changed once the field has been saved"
I am using Access 2003. I have a form that shows many calculated columms (some using =Dlookup(), other using =ufMyFunctions() stored in Modules). I update only 2 columns and the the form is set up as a ContinuousForm.
No problem, everything displays when I open it. Also in the form is a call (found in Modules) to function that updates a column on that table. Basiclly when opening the form it could do some updates. As I said everything works great when I open the form.
What I have noticed is that when I open the form using the following: stDocName = "frmIPMVPCosts" DoCmd.OpenForm stDocName, acNormal DoCmd.GoToRecord , , acFirst DoCmd.GoToRecord , , acLast DoCmd.Close acForm, "frmIPMVPCosts", acSaveYes
all the columns display #ERROR, except the bound columns, which display correctly. The reason I do this method is on a change of value for some of the columns used in the calculated columns on the form, I need to force an update automatically. Instead of waiting on the user to open and close the form, I do it on a CLOSE event in another form that updated some columns used in the calculated columns. That way the reports can up to date also.
This is a single user system for now. Any ideas why the calculated columns are not visible? Is there some setting I have to do? I use this method on other forms that have no calculated columns and it all works.

I have two tables of data, each relating to three business branches (branches A, B and C).
Table 1 shows the expenditure of each branch (by fuel, premises and wages).
Table 2 shows a number of units for each branch (mileage, floorspace and sales).
What I would like to do is calculate unit costs, based on the expenditure in Table 1, divided by a relevant unit in Table 2. The catch is that I want to have a third table which allows the user to specify which expenditure (from Table 1) is combined with which unit (from Table 2) to generate the calculated unit costs. I've been able to do this in Excel, and have attached an example. I've also attached an incomplete Access version with the first two tables. Given the complexity of my actual data, I feel this could be better handled in Access than Excel.
the table 2 is the source of a form that will let the user change the numbers. table 1 should change Date1 and Date2 Fields based on the two fields (3months) and (6months) if i want to make a lookup wizard it should be changed manually and if i make a calculated field i can't find other tables in the expression builder
I currently have a query that pulls selected data from a table. There can be multiple rows of data, and two columns include dollar amounts and quantities. I have a total line going at the bottom so I can see the Grant Total of all the rows (for dollar amounts and quantity).
Is it possible to add a column to this query that will calculate the expression:..?
=Grand Total of Dollar Amts for selected data/Grand Total of Quantity for selected data
I tried to use a query in a query, but must have done something wrong because it just said circular reference.
I have a master data table containing 4 columns and ~ 500K rows. I have a list of keyterms from column1, column2 and column3. How do I use Access to search the masta data table and return the corresponding column4 value for each row on the list.
Below is a sample of the table with the data. I manually added the 1 and 0 to the hc_Year field. However, I would like to create an Update query that will add a 1 to the hc_Year if its the first instance of PIDM & regsYear and add a 0 to the records that are not the first instance.
I have an AfterUpdate event where I want a list box to be populated based on three different criteria based on a table in my database
1. Complete = False AND 2. Supplier on form = supplier in table AND 3. Status in table = "SUPPLIER_RFQ FOLLOW-UP" OR "SUPPLIER_RE-RFQ TO OTHER SUPPLIER"
I am having trouble with the last OR statement criteria, i cannot get this to return values correctly. Here is my code:
I have a form where I can add a new resident. It runs off a query that shows ID as null and has a button to add the data and refresh the form and query. I used to drop in OLE files but have since changed it to a linked image file. What I want to do is pull the info from the data that I input as a new resident.
Basically it means that any staff member can take a photo of the resident and put it in a folder and the database will point to that file.
The location is..."C:UsersRP"&[First Name]&" "&[Last Name]&".jpeg" First Name and Last Name are in the table already. I have tried using an append and an update query to no avail.
I have two tables, one called 'Company' and one called 'Person'. Both tables have several fields, but they both have the same primary key, i.e. 'Naam'.
When I type in a name in the 'Person' table, I'd like the 'Company' table to automatically display the name too. So for example if I type in 'John Doe' in the person table, I want to be able to switch to the 'Company' table and have the same name displayed there, automatically.
I am designing a database for a quarry for maintenance of their machines. I have a table that has a full list of all the parts on the machines, and a multiple value lookup field that says what machines said parts are used on. I am trying to have these values translate to another table, so I can then insert a field to say how many of each part are used on the respective machine, to display on an information form for each machine.
I would also like this table to update if the relevant information is updated, for example if a new machine is input, then have the table update to reflect what parts are used on it (an After Update function?) I have made a query that gives me the read out I want (attached) but just cannot figure out how to get that into a table so I can add the extra information.
I have a main screen that has a tabbed form in it. Each of those tabs has a sub-form in it that displays information and allows some information to be updated.
In one tab I have a query based sub-form that returns information related to the project. This information cannot be manipulated or changed as it comes out of a company managed database. I would like the analysts to be able to add more granular information to a new table by inputting information in a dropdown field for one of the new table fields, but utilizing two of the existing sub-forms fields as identifiers in the new table.
I have a table with the following columns: Task, Visa type, time it takes to perform the task. There are several taks that are performed for all visa types. I want to create a form to enter data to the table in which for the field visa type I have a list box that can allow multiple values, however, I do not to create a single line with the task and on visa type all the types of visas selected. I want to create a line for each type of visa with the information introduced.
I don't know if this is possible, the reason for which I want for the form to create several rows depending on the visas types is because then I have a query that sums all the types of visas. Can this be possible? I don't want the people to introduce manually directly to the table the data and also that for the same taks they have to enter manually 50 rows with values. I want it to be more simple and easier.
I have a table full of meter readings. I want to have a field called consumption which looks at the reading just entered for that month and then subtracts the previous months reading for that meter which leaves the consumption.
Can I get a formula that can work this out automatically?
I could have many periods in a future. What i want is to allow users to insert just first start year and lenght of period and table will be automatically updated based on these two values.
So user will insert Period_Start_Year and Length of Period, for example 2010 and 2 and table should be>
While i am writing this i realised that user have to specify also ending year, i do not want to have infinity.. I am thinking about form and update query but can't get it...
Hi, I have a query that contains the results of repeated tests on a number of persons. The goal of treatment is to get those test results below 50. I need to find, for each person, the period of time (with a start and an end date) during which their test was below 50. The dataset looks like:
