General :: Linked CSV Table For Multiple Users
Jul 6, 2015
I have an Access database which has a linked table to a CSV file.Only one user can use this part of the database that links to the CSV - for other users we get the error 3051 - opened exclusively by another user. How can the csv file be a linked table with multiple users ? The query itself is set to no locks.

Currently the system where I work is set up so that everyone has their own front end on the local network. I would like to change this because updating all of them takes a lot of time for me and skill level for users is too low for me to trust them with updating it on there own.
My question is this:
If I were to create a shortcut on everyone's desktop that linked to one front end would this be wise? I can't seem to get a straight answer from anywhere on the internet. I know most places say that it is better to have the actual front end on the staffs computer but that would make my job of keeping the database updated even worse because staff have multiple computers and this isn't my full time job.
If this is okay practice how many users would this be able to sustain? Currently we only have 6 users on the database with there own front end and it works great. I am planning on adding around 10 more users in the future but if needed they could have there own database as they are separate programs.

I've prepared a front end database with forms that allow data to be keyed into linked tables to my main databse.
However, currently the front end database only allows 1 user to do it at 1 time and when another user tries to open the file, an error "The Database Has Been Placed in a State by User on Machine That Prevents It From Being Opened or Locked'
Is there anyway to allow multiple users to use the front end database at the same time?

I have a simple access database that 26 clerks in my office use to enter their weekly tasks. The database is split into a front end and back end, with the back end stored on a shared drive that we all have access to. We have been testing the database for 3 weeks with 5 clerks and no issues. This week is the first week that all 26 have used it, and immediately we encountered a problem.
I think the problem is happening because one of the tables in the database is linked to an excel spreadsheet. When multiple users try to use a dropbox that is linked to this table simultaneously they get an error message. I saved the excel file as a shared file, but this did not correct the problem.
I made a copy of the database before I split it. I know I can fix this if I import the excel spreadsheet into a copy of the database, link this table to the dropboxes, split it again, and redistribute it.
would like to leave the front ends linked to this spreadsheet, because we update it regularly. If not, we will have to have somebody update that particular table in the database intermittently.

I already have created & run an Access database for around 12 users. I now am looking to create a database that can have at least 30 users. Each one with a unique user ID & password (Using a security file ".mdw") Users log into a front end on a network environment. Now...My question...Is 30 to large of a user base for Access in a network environment??

I recently made a database that we will use to allocate appointments between a team of up to 30 in 2 different sites. I have tested it with 10 people in the same site using it and have had no issues so far.
One of our managers wants to know whether it is likely to cause issues with network usage/congestion. When we introduce it to the other site. I told her it is unlikely, but went to our IT department for their opinion. I got a reply simply stating that Access is not intended for this sort of task, and is only designed to have a couple of people using it at a time.
I'd like a second opinion, because I don't think that answer is even close to correct. I'll describe briefly how it works and what our set up is.
The database has 2 tables, one that stores the details of the clients we call (7 fields), and another that logs each contact attempt (6 field) and ensures no 2 users get the same entry. I have split the database, with the backend saved on one of our networked drives, and the frontend will be distributed in an email. (at present it is just an unsplit database stored on a network drive, but I don't think this will work well when 2 different sites are using it).
I think data throughput will be minimal, but I don't know how I'd go about checking that. Would you expect any issues with this being used by 30 people simultaneously?

I have two separate database files, a front end with all my forms and a back end with all my tables. The backend is stored on a network drive, is there any way of being able to store the frontend on the drive with the backend? Users do not use the actual computer to store information or access files, everything is usually saved on the network drive. I have created a shortcut that launches the front end database in the read only kiosk mode.

Twice a year, a database of mine is accessed and put too use by various staff within a time range of 1 week. the database is on a shared drive and in a location which can be accessed by all.
The staff access the database from different workstations and in some instances at the same time.
This has only led to issues in the database being copied and then confusing staff on what database to click on thus i have 2 databases which i then have to sift through and copy/paste into the correct one.
I want to know the best way i can:
1) Prevent multiple users accessing the database at a time.
2) making a copy of the original and typing into a separate database.

Hi all,
I have a table tblLineItem contains materials/line item records assign to different buyers. Each buyer/user needs to access the same table tlbLineItem and choose certain line items and works with them to create PO (purchase order) .
How do I lock the table while whoever access first then after that person finish it release the table to avoid each process of one buyer's items overlap with other buyers' line items.
And if the table is being used have a message box alert to inform the buyers, so they can wait?
My problem with this database is right now I placed a check box on each line item on the form that have the data source is the tblLineItem. Each buyer filters only their line items, check the box of the line items they wish to create PO at a time and click the button "Create PO". However, if buyer A uses the same form and check the boxes on his/her own line items, while coincidently buyer B also work on the same form then when they click "Create PO", their line items cross with each other!!
If you have suggestions, please advise/help!!
Thanks so much.

Hi,
I'm building a DB where I have multiple users. I would like to have all data in 1 table but only give access to records created by the individual user. Is this possible?
Alternatively, if each user has it's own table, how can I report on the sum of all tables.
Cheers,
Rene

I have a table for a multiple parents linked to a child table. I need to figure out a way to only allow 1 parent to be coded as primary, 1 as secondary, and then the rest as other... I thought about making Primary/Secondary/Other a primary key. But then I can only have 1 other. I would have to make a finite number of parents that could be entered and I want an infinite number.... My end goal is to have a report that only has a primary and second parent on it, but the rest of the parents still exist in the table...
*Child_ID
Parent_First_Name
*Primary/Secondary/Other

I have a form that I've created to allow users to do a ad-hoc query on data in a table. Most of the fields are setup as
Code:
Like [Forms]![Unusual Login Research]![CustomerName] & "*"
where I have a drop-down box with options for: >, <, >=, <= and between. I've tried a bunch of iterations of the same criteria and keep getting the error above. Just as a test, i was trying to at least get the between option to work with the following:
Code:
[Forms]![Unusual Login Research]![ScoreAtLoginCriteria]+" "+[Forms]![Unusual Login Research]![ScoreAtLogin1] And [Forms]![Unusual Login Research]![ScoreAtLogin2]
Where ScoreAtLoginCriteria is the drop-down, set to "between" and ScoreAtLogin1 and ScoreAtLogin2 are integers.

I am fairly new to Access and I would like to create a form to allow users to create their own query. I would like to allow users to select multiple fields (perhaps with checkboxes?) from all possible fields in a table to return either all data from that field or narrow their search by inputting certain criteria or choosing from a drop down into a text box. Is this possible in Access and any detailed specifics on how to achieve this?

I have an MS Access accdb with linked SQL Server 2012 ODBC tables. I am working on a procedure to copy data from local tables to these linked tables (identical schema). I did a simple
Code:
DoCmd.RunSQL "INSERT INTO linkedTable SELECT * FROM localTable"
This works, but is very slow. Way too slow. (INSERT copies the data one record at a time).
I would like to copy the data in a bulk operation, or operations that I can execute programmatically.

I have one DB that is used for creating/storing customer ID's, and another DB that is used for creating/storing job information for customers.I have linked the table from the customer DB to the job DB.
There is a table in the job database that holds customer name and ID, and some VBA that generates unique job codes.
Is it possible to have the data from the linked table automatically update into the existing table?

I want to create a form where by the user can select the fields he requires and the table is created.
Example: I have a table of subjects like maths, english, french, chemistry etc,
The user can choose what subjects are available in that particular school and therefore a table is created based on the chosen subjects.
Is there any way it can be done even with vba?

I have a database that is designed with a front and back end, with the FE linked to the BE. Some potential customers want to play around with the database, and the easiest way for me to get them access to it would be for me to combine the FE and BE and just give them a copy of that. how to link a table, and I know how to import a table. What I'm unsure of is how to cleanly convert a linked table to a local table.

Please could you advise me if tables have to be linked in order to perform a query on multiple tables? For example searching for a date and matching records on more than one table at the same time.

I have a database that is used in our office. It is split with the backend stored on a network share.
I need to make some updates, and to do maintenance I usually make a copy of the frontend/backend to my desktop, and use the linked table manager to switch to using the local copy of the backend so I don't mess up the main data. All good so far.
however, I recently added a new table, and originally called it "overRides", I then decided that "adjustments" was a more suitable name and changed it.
Now whenever I try to switch from the main backend to my local copy I get a message when relinking "adjustments" that Access cannot find the object "overRides" and to make sure it exists and the name is spelled correctly...
I have been just deleting the linked table and reimporting "adjustments" but this issue keeps coming back and it's driving me nuts!
How can I make Access forget that this table used to be called "overRides"?

I split my database into a FE and BE to simplify the upgrading of the clients copy. I had a chance to implement that change today and except for this error all seems to be well.
The error is "Invalid Operation 3219 " and flags this line of code "Set rsTable = dbsCurent.OpenRecordSet("Import650tbl, dbOpenTable, dbAppendOnly) " when the error is triggered. The table Import650tbl is a temporary holding table to which I enter imported records. I then add some supporting information and then the records are added to live data table for further processing. After the data is added to the live table the information in the Import650tbl is deleted by a query to be ready for tomorrows processing.
This error prevents the process from working. I got around the problem by deleting the link to the BE for this table and creating the table in the FE. After that all was well.
Question: Why does the above OpenRecordSet fail on the linked table?

I have several tables that are linked that I need to be able to add to. This is an example of the structure:
Patient Info
ID
FK_Ward - ID of Ward table
FK_Room - ID of Room table
FK_Cond - ID of Condition table
Ward
ID
WardID
Room
ID
RoomNumber
Condition
ID
Description
Unfortunately, its not the exact one as I can't post that here! What I am trying to do is to add a new patient record using information from the other tables as guides - e.g. the user selects the name of the Ward but the ID in the Ward table is entered, the User selects the number of the room but again the ID in the Room table is entered, and for the Condition same thing. So I would like to have dropdowns (or ComboBoxes) for each of these and based on the user's selections add a new record to PatientInfo using the ID values as links.

I have a database with a number of linked tables that are linked to tables in different databases (not a back-end).for example, I have table1 that is linked to table1 in K:databasedb1.mdb.table2 linked to table2 in S:datadata.mdb.and so on...
However, recently we have moved all our databases to a new location.
K:databasedb1.mdb is now residing in O:masterdatabase
and S:datadata.mdb is now residing in O:masterdata
and so on...
I'm now in charge of relinking all those tables to point to the new location.I would do this in linked table manager one by one but we have 100s of tables linked to multiple different databases in different location.is there a way to create a VBA code that will automatically do this re-linking process?
so,
1. find unlinkable tables
2. search its new location under O:master
3. re-link it to the new location
Database names and tables names have not been changed. Just the location of databases.

I am using Access 2010 and Excel 2010. I need to have VB script to export the access table 502 records by 38 fields into Multiple Excel workbooks each having multiple tabs. In the Access table each record has two fields: Div and Tab that will be used to name each workbook and each tab (sheet). There are 6 unique "Div"'s to name the 6 workbooks and there are several "Tab" names for each Div (workbook).
Note: These 6 workbooks with multiple tabs were originally imported into Access from one common folder on my desktop by this routine:
Option Compare Database
Option Explicit
Private Sub Command1_Click()
Dim blnHasFieldNames As Boolean, blnEXCEL As Boolean, blnReadOnly As Boolean
Dim lngCount As Long
[Code] .....

What is the strategy for doing this rather than the code (if it's possible)? I can code a fair bit of VBA in excel but I'm not too sure about what I'm doing in Access.
