Access App Kills SQL SERVER After Upsizing

Aug 11, 2005

HI.
Your help is very appreciated.

*I upsized ACCESS 2002 (tables only) to use SQL SERVER 7.0 as backend.
(linked tables).
* Almost all the ACCESS forms are bound type forms.

Now, I have two problems:
1. Other applications (not ACCESS ones) that use different dbs on the same SQL SERVER , are slowed down / halted.
2. My SQL SERVER license is limited to 8 "user counts". When there are 8 instances of the ACCESS app, any additional connection request is refused (from any app).
(I can't afford buying more "user counts").

I suspect that beacuse the forms are bound, it hold connection open as long as the form is used.
Also, each ACCESS app instance, opens its own connection.

The solution that I see, is to use unbound forms(disconnected), and opening the connection in code using connection pooling.
Would you recommend on this solution?
do you have any suggestions?

Thanks a lot
Roy

General :: Split Database Access FE And SQL Server BE

Mar 4, 2014

I am currently working on an application where I am using MS access as my FE and working with linked tables to SQL server BE. I also have a few temp tables within Access that are not linked but needed.

1. What are my steps into making this into a SPLIT DB? I am assume the BE will have my linked tables from SQL and the FE will have my temp tables and forms. Is this correct?
2. Once I split it, then I can make an .ACCDE file for a Mulit User environment, is this correct?

What other steps should I be made aware of?

Unable To See Relationship Diagram In Database After Upsizing From Access 2003 To SQL

Nov 9, 2011

I have upsized from Access 2003 to SQL Server 2008 R2 using upsizing wizard. Everything works fine. But I don't see relationship in SQL SErver 2008 R2 if I go to database. But I set relationship in Access 2003 before upsizing it.

Amso I don't see relationship (diagram) in Access 2003 , which I was able to see before.

So do I need to again recreate the relationship amongst the table in Access 2003 Or SQL SErver 2008 R2 ? I thought, if you link tables, everything should be taken care but i don't see relationship structure any more.

General :: Error When Splitting Access Database

Feb 15, 2013

I have created a db for a nonprofit counseling org. I had created the first half, mostly administrative tasks, called Phase1, and put the BE on a network drive and the FE on multiple users. Now in developing the clinical portion, Phase2, I linked to four of the tables in Phase1 BE file.

Now I tried to split Phase2 the same way as Phase1 and got an error "Subscript out of Range". I think because of already having some external links in it. I checked for the file and Access actually created the BE file for the new phase2, all of the tables are in it minus the four I was linking to. But, access didn't create a FE file. The original still has all of the objects, tables and forms etc. My question is; can I link to the tables in the new BE file even though those tables still exist in the original file?

General :: Error Using Access 2010 Contacts Database Template

Jun 13, 2014

I used the Contacts Database Template to import a comma delimited txt file of contacts data. The template included a number of tables, queries, forms & reports which I did not require. I deleted them leaving only a Table entitled 'Addressbk'. I added an Entry Form using the standard access tools and this works fine with the table. However, on running the access database I get the following error message; 'The form named "Main" is mis-spelled or refers to a form that doesn't exist. My only form is labelled 'Entry Form', so it would appear that one of the forms I deleted must have been named 'Main'. If one ignores the error message the database & entry form function perfectly.

General :: Database Size On Server

Oct 22, 2013

I have a database (Access 2003 and I am using it with Access 2007 with user level security) on shared folder on internal Dell server and I have created a shortcut to each user's machine to access it. This days I am facing a problem of db size as every 10 days it's increasing upto 2gb but the strange thing is when I am doing cut / pasting same database to my desktop from the server shared folder it will become 80 mb only and I am again placing that db (80mb db) into the server and it will work. What is a reason behind it? why my 80mb db is showing 2gb db on server?

General :: Error 3343 - Unrecognized Database Format (Access 2007)

Aug 19, 2015

I have a standard shared Access DB application (i.e. central BE on the network, multiple users running their own copy of the FE on their local machine) Has been in production for a while, no major issues.

New user has been added in recent weeks. My error logger has picked up an error he hit earlier today - doesn't appear to have been fatal (he hasn't come to me with a problem, suggesting he just "OK"d the error prompt and continued on - I need to confirm this with him though...)

Error was 3343 "Unrecognized database format 'C:TempMyDBMyDB.accde'."

Can see it was tripped on a particular form which queries certain data into a subform (so he was obviously able to open the FE and connect to the BE fine; it was several steps down the road where the error has occurred).

General :: Multi User Database With No Network And Without Server?

Sep 19, 2012

I am developing a database for a company with about 10 users of the DB each using the DB on their own PC/Mac.

The workplace does not have a network. All work is done and stored on their own computers. They do not have a server either.

They do have a BT Business Hub providing broadband both wired and wirelessly.

The database is built using Access 2010.

I need to set up user groups/permissions on the database so certain staff can only see certain forms/tables etc...

What are my options here?

There is money available to buy a server or whatever. But ideally if there is another way of storing it and doing it, then I would like to give that a try.

I was reading somewhere you can use the Hub to create a small network, is this possible? And if so, whats the set up process for this?

Remote Access To Database On Server

Sep 23, 2005

I have an Access database on my server. My client does not like the idea of having to download the db, make changes, then upload it back. In the past, he has dealt with SQL databases, where you can create an access data project, that will give you a desktop shortcut straight to the database. I was wondering if there was any way to do something similar with an Access database. There is FTP setup for the site and all required permissions are setup. Is there any way to create a desktop shortcut, so he can edit the database in real-time, without having to download and upload? Thanks for any help.

Using Access On A Server With Database On Local PC

Jun 29, 2014

I'll try to explain what I'm trying to do. I want to use the MS Access (2010) application residing on the remote server on a Access database(accdb) that is located on my local (home) PC. I copied the database from the server. How do I get Access (running on the server) to work on my copy of the database?

I tried using my local (on my PC) copy of MS Access (2007) to work on the database, but but I get file errors (file paths look like server paths).

Access Front End Linked To SQL Server Database

May 24, 2006

Hi,

I created a database in Microsoft Access and then upsized it to SQL Server afterwards.

I now need to add a new column to a table in the database. So I added the new column in SQL Server using ALTER TABLE command. This column is a foreign key which has an associated parent key in another table which contains a description of the column.
e.g.
Main_Table
Case_ID Foreign_Key_Field_ID
1234 78

New_Foreign_Key_Table
Foreign_Key_Field_ID Foreign_Key_Field_Desc
78 Describes the ID 78

I also setup a CONSTRAINTREFERENCE between the fields in these 2 tables.

I then relinked my tables using the Linked Table Manager to pick up the change to the table I altered (Main_Table). I also linked to the new table I created (New_Foreign_Key_Table).

My problem:
In Access if I create a new table I can select the lookup value for a field in the Table Design view Lookup tab. However, I altered my table in SQL Server and then linked to it again to pick up the change. Now when I view the linked table in Access it does not have any lookup value AND it's not possible to change this for a linked table.

Is there some piece of SQL I can use in SQL Server to change the lookup value for the field in my table OR have I approached this the wrong way. Should I have modified the local table in Access and upsized it again?

Otherwise if I select all values from my Main_Table in a form it displays the Foreign_Key_Field_ID instead of the Foreign_Key_Field_Desc because the lookup value has not been set to Foreign_Key_Field_Desc

This posting is a bit long - I hope it makes sense.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

Moving Access Database To A Different Server / Share?

Jul 10, 2015

Currently I have an Access dB that was developed in A2003 but we are currently using A2010, it is accessed by multiple users that all have a frontend locally on there own networked PC's, with the backends etc on an old NT server, we are having problems with new technology accessing the NT server so it's well past time we got shut of it

We have a share on our network that has been made available to us to migrate all our NT server files to, Here's my problem, on testing the procedure I copied the database backend and .mdw file over to the share then tried to open the dB where upon i got the following error message

Cannot open microsoft Access database information file

On further investigation it seems that both the back end and the .mdw file have copied over with no content i.e filesize is 0kB, not only that the originals also seem to have had there content "deleted" a simple copy shouldn't have done this (I did have a backup btw)

Queries :: Converted Desktop Access Database To SQL Server

Dec 5, 2014

I have converted desktop Access database to SQL server. A medium sized app with 24 tables, 60 or so forms/subforms and about 120 queries. I created 2 split files, one containing the tables, and the other containing forms, queries, vba modules. I migrated the tables to SQL server using SSMA, and built an odbc connection for my front end. It works, except it is painfully slow. Its cos most of the recordsets that drive my front end are query based. And in many instances the queries are comprised of queries, not just tables.

Should i be creating my queries on the SQL server? Is that what people do when using Access front end with SQL server back end? Do away with Access queries? Or does the problem lie elsewhere? How do i network optimise my Access FE / SQL server BE?
