Help With External Inputs!!

Nov 16, 2006

Hi,

I am trying to creat a DB that can potentially recieve input from a serial port which has a unique ID on it and updates the corresponding feild within the DB. I don't need to demonstrate full functionality (although if I have time I might give it a go!).

What I want to show is that the DB can accept a unique ID from this external source. The ID will just be to identify a user and a peice of equipment, potentially the feilds in the table would be updated with information like, time of session, duration, speed. I am assuming I may need to use VB to do some programming and create an incoming event. Just wondering what the most logical solution is. I want to bring up an interface when an input is recieved, like a user interface or pop up which says eg. "Hello Jim". Then it is possible to demonstrate that they have been detected.

Any help would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks,

Minxka

External Interface Or API

Oct 24, 2007

Hi All,

I am not an Access developer so please forgive my ignorance!

We have a Quality Assurance (QA) database (Access 2003) that has a "Project" table.

Currently our QA person has to fill in project data (e.g., project name, project manager, start date, etc.) from within the Access database. I can automate this process by providing the project data from an external source.

Does Access have any integration capabilities which allows it to receive external data, like:

- a command line interface for doing SQL inserts (like isql.exe)
- a formal API

I see examples of ODBC use in the manuals, but they are from within Access to connect to an external DB. I want to connect and insert into Access from the external source.

Push into access versus pull into access.

TIA,
Matt

Get External Data

Jun 5, 2006

I have 2 tables both which I need to import data into. I have 2 xls spreadsheets per day and I need to import all the data and build it up over a period of time so that I can use the database to analyse the data. There are around 2000 records per file but I can't seem to import the data unless I select the option to create a new table each time or unless I copy and paste the data. I need to be able to timport one after the other into the same table but I keep getting an error message just saying an error occurred file not imported.

How can I import this data??

I have a table that is linked to SQL server
In this table I have a field that has thepath to an image
C:TempImagexxx.pdf
What I want to do is have a dropdown that the user can select a Notice Number and then have its image pop up in the form.

I have a Notice Number field and a Path field.

Do I create a Query to query the two fields.
Create a Drop Down box and assign the query to the drop down box.

But then how do I get the image to popup...and in what and unbound object frame?

Any help would be apprecaited

THanks

Link To External Data

Apr 24, 2006

I have a fairly complex database that will have many users. I am looking for a way to sort of link the data in a text box to an external database or text file of some sort to know who created a new record in it.

For example:

The database is on a network drive. Each person who will have access to it has a small file in their C: drive that contains their name. Whenever a new record is created, the name on that file is added to the record to know who is it that added it.

How do I do that?

Thanks

How Do You Link To An External File?

Dec 8, 2004

Hi there,

In an access db, I want to add a field called 'FileName' and simply add a link to a file. In tabular view, would I simply put 'filesmynotes.txt' into the database? Also, when I asp this to a web page, should it (or can it) show as a hyperlink?

Thanks,

Linked (external) Table Help

May 29, 2005

I have a database which contains a link to an external table.
This link is broken, however, if the external table's database is moved (yes, I know this isn't a suprise).

What I want to know is if there's a way that would be easy for a user who's not very confident to easily change the path to the table. I don't care how--a popup box, a form, whatever, as long as it'll be easier for them than unhiding the main dtabase window, dleting the exiting link, and making a new one...

Is this possible?

And going farther -> is it possible to create some kind of dialog wich prompts user to point the external file as linked?

Insert Into External Database

Feb 19, 2006

I am trying to move data in one table to a table in an external database and Access isn't playing ball. Supposedly you can use the 'IN' clause to link to an external database but if I put it in then I get 'Syntax error in INSERT INTO statement' and if I take it out it works fine not that, that is what I want. It's syntax seems to be defined like below at the MS website - jet reference???

I've also got a parameter that I'm trying to feed it, that is the path to the database, which is correct! c:helpcontent.mdb

Here's the query
INSERT INTO CONTENT_CLASSES IN '"+ @DBDir +"' ( PARENT_ID, CLASS_NAME, STATUS_ID, KEYWORDS, PRIORITY, LAST_CHANGED_BY, LAST_CHANGED_DATE, MULTIPLE_CONTENT )
SELECT A.PARENT_ID, A.CLASS_NAME, A.STATUS_ID, A.KEYWORDS, A.PRIORITY, A.LAST_CHANGED_BY, A.LAST_CHANGED_DATE, A.MULTIPLE_CONTENT
FROM CONTENT_CLASSES AS A;

Append New From External Database

Apr 3, 2006

Hi there I'm attempting to import records from an external database without losing the records that I currently have.

Eg if I have 3 records in my main database and 5 in the external one, I only want to append the 2 missing records and leave the other 3 alone.

Ideally what I want to do is the below

SELECT * INTO table
FROM [MS Acess;DATABASE=\pathexternal_data.mdb].[table]
WHERE id NOT IN (SELECT id FROM table)

Any ideas where I'm going wrong with the above?

Thanks for your help!!!

Trouble Getting External Data

Oct 23, 2006

I'm trying to import about 18 excel spreadsheets into one database in Access. I've been using "get external data" to import the spreadsheets as tables, and the first 8 of them worked fine, but now I cannot import any more excel files. The only error message I'm getting is "An error occurred trying to import file 'C:....xls' The file was not imported." And this error pops up after I have gone through all of the importing steps. Did I exhaust Access's resources? It's not a format issue, and I've restarted, etc. I'm at a loss.

Dim Ttl As Double

Dim Ttl2 As Double
Dim Ttl3 As Double

Dim Ttl5 As Double

Modules & VBA :: External Name Not Defined

Jul 22, 2015

I use the following code behind the BeforeUpdate event of a control, to validate input.

Code:
Private Sub StockPrice_BeforeUpdate(Cancel As Integer)
'strings used for the MsgBox
Dim strTitle As String
Dim strMsg1 As String
Dim strMsg2 As String
Dim strMsg3 As String

[Code] ....

There are two different forms that use that control and this code behind the BeforeUpdate event.

It works on one but not on the other, allowing to input anything in the control with checking and without bringing up any msgbox.
Searching what's the problem in the immediate window, brings up a message saying "External Name not defined'.

Images & MS Word

Apr 13, 2007

To queries here:

Database is the MS Contacts Template with minor adjustments.

1. Trying to insert a link to an image using a bound OLE object in my form. Now I've got it top work. However, the link appears normal size in the centre of the object box. Problem is when I resize the oject box so that llink text just fits fine. The text resizes with the box and you need a microscope to read it.

2. I want to be able to cerate merged letter but I cant select Tools>Merge it with MS word fro some reason (i've aslo tried with with DB's we use in work with same problem) but publish with Word is available.

I am by no means an expert with Access so please, please post replies in lamens terms.

Images In Cells...

Feb 19, 2008

Hello,

I did a cursory search of the forum and didn't find anything (probably more my search than the content). I also think I know the answer to this, but I want to clear it up once and for all.

Is it true that I cannot insert an image into an Access Table in a way that it treats the image like data (e.g., it comes up on reports as entered).

If so, and I suspect it is so, what would be the best way to associate a row with a certain image in Access? Here's what I'm hoping to do: I have a list of projects and all of them have a status. Right now the "status" column includes the text "Green," "Yellow," or "Red." I would rather have this text display as green, yellow, or red color rather than text. Is this possible?

Thank you!! :D

Images Not Showing Up

Mar 23, 2005

Hi there,

I have a "minor" problem which most of you will probably have a laugh about

I have set up my Table / Form to have an image for each "item".

Now...when I add the image, it does not show up as the thumbnail JPG. It only appears as the image name.

So instead of seeing a picture, I see 1.jopg (example)

Can anyone help me with a correct hint?

Much appreciated

Chris

Record Images

Jul 20, 2005

Before you ask, yes I did search, but no it didn't help...

OK, database is storing members, so each member record needs to have a picture of them. I've made a field in the members table for the path of the image. I've followed the example here - http://www.utteraccess.com/candace/candace/picture/picture.zip , but I keep getting the error 'You can't reference a property or method for a control unless the control has the focus.' When I've tried to set the focus to it I get the error '# can't move the focus to the control MemberImage.'

What am I doing wrong?
