How To Create A Field Showing Numerical Position Within A Table
Aug 30, 2005
Hi,
I am looking for Idea's of how to create a report.
Basically the report is a league table showing Month and YTD, this is the easy bit.
The part I need suggestions and guidance on:
The report also needs to show peoples movements in the league table i.e: whether they have moved up, down or not moved at all from the previous months position.
I was thinking of creating 2 tables: Current Month + Previous Month, in each table the persons position is indicated (an ascending record number is created throughout the table - not sure how to do this yet)
Then using code, lookup each persons position in previous month and write that position number against the persons UID and current position in current months table.
Am I on the right tracks or does someone have an easier solution?
Have two tables: Assignment and StudentHeader - they are related by AssignmentGUID
Have the SQL:
SELECT StudentHeader.[Student ID], StudentHeader.GUID FROM Assignment INNER JOIN StudentHeader ON Assignment.GUID = StudentHeader.[Assignment GUID] WHERE (((Assignment.[Assignment Type])="Q") AND ((Assignment.[Assignment Number])=2)) GROUP BY StudentHeader.[Student ID], StudentHeader.GUID ORDER BY StudentHeader.[Student ID], StudentHeader.GUID;
I have to make changes to an existing Dbase. Problem is that in this Dbase it is on one form possible to put text in a numerical field. I need to do this again, however it does not work, Access gives the message that Text will not go in a numerical field. I am talking about a combobox.
is there any way I can make a field with a data type that calculates numbers in the field but also allows text to be entered into the field (e.g. N/A or No Score) The non-numerical data certainly wouldn't have to be calculated and could be filtered out when calculating averages and other numerical operations.
I have a table which tracks material quotes. I have two fields for the quantity range called PriceBreakBegin and PriceBreakEnd. If I have a part that has contract pricing (no limit on the PriceBreakEnd), can I use a wildcard or something in the PriceBreakEnd field to represent any number, and not just the highest integer I can put in there like 99999?
What is the best solution to this problem? How can I automatically assign a numerical value to a field based on the information currently contained as test in another field? For example, if I have a field that ranks a film as “Poor, Fair, Good, Great, Superior”, how can I have a set value appear for statistical purposes that assigns a number to each of these values (Something like: If rating of current record = “Poor”, then ranking = “1”; If rating of current record = “Fair”, then ranking = “2”; If rating of current record = “good”, then ranking = “3”, etc. I also want to be able to have the values recalculate if someone changes their original opinion.
I've been building a small app for some friends. At present, they enter "records" line by line into a word processor, then use (archaic, IMHO) macros to produce the desired printouts. They wanted the new data entry UI to mimic that process.
Ok, so I've adopted the datasheet form as the principal entry vehicle. Based on the initial info they gave me, there were two convenient fields to sort on, so I used them in the OrderBy clause of the query which serves as the form's recordsource. I also developed the code to maintain the sort order after they inserted or deleted a record.
Now it turns out they don't require an entry into those fields, and in fact there's no logical field at all on which to order by.
So the question is: how to approach this? From my reading, I can't use the primary key or an autonumbered field, since the former won't necessarily reflect the desired incrementation and the latter only triggers for a new record, not an insertion (is this correct?).
My thought is to add a simple numerical field (which will be hidden from the user) with sequential values. I can do the OrderBy on it, and add code to adjust those values whenever a record is deleted or inserted. (That will require looping through the recordset from the point where the deletion or insertion occurred.)
For instance, is there some way to add a calculated field to the recordsource for this purpose?
I have a form based on a table and I just added 3 fields to the table. When I go to the form to add these fields, they do not show up in the field list. I've also tried creating a textbox and going to the Data Tab and choosing the data source but those 3 new fields are still not showing up. How can I go about adding these 3 fields?
I'm an Access novice. I have a query based report that is based on several tables. All tables are joined by the same field "customer ID," but 1 table is not available under "Add Existing Fields." I cannot figure out why that table isn't available, but I need to add a field.
I am trying to find the position of a "," in a data field.
I was trying the SEARCH function I found in Help "SEARCH(',',[emplname])", but I am getting "Undefined function 'SEARCH' in expression." when I run the query.
I have a make-table query that pulls all the fields from 1 table (MainTable), and creates a new table with a date stamp based apon a form value entered (New Table = MainTableWithDate).
Currently, I setup the query to pull info from the form field like this:
DateField: [Forms]![frmmain]![DateField]
However, when the make-table query is done - all date fields are blank (all other fields are correctly created), and when I look at the new created table (mainTableWIthDate), the typeassigned to the date field is "Binary" (in the form, I've specified LongDate).
I have a database table which is basically a calendar containing 4 columns (i) the date, (ii) special info about that date, (iii) morning volunteers and (iv) afternoon volunteers. When I go to this table the cursor is positioned at the very first date and i then have to scroll though record after record to get to the current date. How can I get it to remember the last date used?I am using Vista and Access 2003
Is there a way, aside from using auto number, to find a records postion. I am using a list and want to be able to double click an entry and have it open a form and go to that record. However I can't use auto number because I allow for the deleting of records, and once deleted the auto number no longer corrilates to the records position.
If anyone knows of a different sytem that renumbers after deleting a record that would be great if you could share it with me. Or if there is a way to open a form and use goto record but instead of using record postion use where statement.
If anyone has any other ideas on this please share. Thanks.

I have successfully created queries to create reports showing all Start Dates by Month no matter what program and similar reports for all the other date queries. What I need it to do is list everything happening within a month and sort them by category. How do I do that? I've attached the database so you can see my queries as well as the main switchboard reports associated.
I have several comboxes where I'm using date/time input masks. When I go to enter data in the field the cursor is situated at the right end of the box. I have to backspace to the beginning of the field to enter the data. How do I position the cursor to the beginning (left side) of the field?
Hi, With a table in open view can a record be moved to a different position, i'm using access 2003. Also is there any way to sort besides ascending or descending? I've got a lot of tables to make and if I forget a single column/field and have to add it later (like I have done all ready numerious times) I'm almost having to recreate the table again in order to have the field fit in the correct spot in the table. These tables are bound to combo boxes so its important every thing is grouped for easy choosing.
I've created several Split forms that have the data input fields in the form with the relevant query datasheet shown below. As you tab through the form fields, the various cells in the datasheet are highlighted and move across the data row (as one would expect!). I want to put a particular field / Column at the start of the datasheet so that it's always available for view, but it seeme that what ever I do the column ends up back at the very far end of the data row!
I've sussed out the "Freeze Fields" facility which will keep the first column visable whichever cell is highlighted across the data row.
The column I want as the first column currently sits at the far end of the data row. So far I have dragged the row to the first column position; I've arranged the Query driving the form so that the column is at the front of the row, both in design view and in datasheet view, but to no avail. Everything I do to put the column at the start of the row in the datasheet shown below the form ends up with it back at the far end of the row the next time I open the form.
Hi, I'm new to this forum and have a question: I want to create a table with an Autonumber field using a SQL statement, in Microsoft Access Database, something like this: Cnn.execute "CREATE TABLE newtable (id Long, Name Char(100)) " is there something to put in place of "long" to make the field autonumber? I tried the word "autonumber", but did not work.
I have the following vba script and I can not get the yes/no field to work, also with adding field properties of required = yes and the text field to be 50, just examples are fine and I will update what I want.
Code:
Sub test() Set Db = Application.CurrentDb Set tdf = Db.TableDefs("1Testing") ' 1Testing is your table name ' First create a field with data type = Text Set fld1 = tdf.CreateField("FieldT1", dbText) ' Field1 is your Field Name and formatted as text
I am trying to create a make-table query, with a new AutoNumber field.
I know that if you are creating a new Text field you type FieldName: "" in Field and for a Number field you would type FieldName: [], but what do you type for an AutoNumber field?
I have a Date field in the format X/XX/2012 for all my records.
I want to create a field that labels each record according to its quarter. So if a date is 3/29/2012, I'd want the corresponding field entry to be: Q1 2012. If it's 3/29/2013, I'd want it to be: Q1 2013, etc.
I guess I would run an update query, but I don't know how to build the proper expression in order to update my table with a new field.
I have figured out how to create a quarter #, but I actually need output in the format mentioned above.
I have a form and it has a field as question. I also have a field as I'd in this form from the same table that is autonumber. I want that for each field the question will be created automatically in the table as below:
Is epm ( my Id field) is created Is epm and is created are string
They should also include Id number of each row. So It would be like:
Is epm -1 implemented Is epm-2 implemented . . For each row
I'm trying to summarize the value from multiple fields in a table and the total value will be updated on a different table as per highlighted below (taken from Northwind Web Database).
I've got a fields called rev code that contain the following values:
field name: 110 131 250 255 258
field value: 7.49 6 11.25 12.11 78
I'm writing a query that pulls from the first two digits of the rev code and need to round off to the nearest dollar so in my query I'll have a column 11 with a value of 7, a column 13 with a value of 6, then I need to take columns 250 255 and 255 add the values together and round off so I get a column 25 with a value of 101.
I am wondering if it is possible to automatically create a new field in one table whenever a new record is entered in another table. The name of the field would be the primary key entry of that new record.
I have one table (table 1) in which each record corresponds to a particular mouse with a unique ID number, and each field is the ID number of a particular genetic marker. The table overall shows what genotype (+ or -) a mouse has at each marker.
In the other table (table 2) the primary key of each record is the ID number of a genetic marker, and the fields are several different bits of information about the marker (e.g. what chromosome it's on, its location on the chomosome, etc.)
I would like to have it set up so that if I enter a new genetic marker in table 2 a field named after its marker ID will automatically appear in table 1. Is there a way to do this?
I have 1 table that I duplicated to make 3 tables total. I did this b/c I am trying to create separate columns from the same field and table. The field is Workorder. Each workorder list the workorder number followed by a dash and then code. I am wanting to put all of the workorders with the same code in it's own column.
I have 5 codes that i am searching for. The first column list the workorder and a code (123456789-AD). The second column (123456789-BC). I'm good to this point but my problem occurs next.
The third column i am trying to put 3 types of workorder and it's code in the same column. As follows, (123456789-CD, 123456789-TC, and 123456789-PTC. However, when I do this it takes the results from the 3rd column and applies it to the 3rd column but also the 1st and 2nd column. I tried a UNION query and unless I am doing it incorrectly it does not work.
