Linked Tables Not Pulling Back Field Data Correctly
Jun 13, 2012
I'm a bit new to Access but have managed to build a very simple database.
I have a main table which I need to add 4 columns onto the end of, the data for which comes from 4 tables linked to it. Below is how they are linked.
Main table------> Table 1
Main table------> Table 2
Main table------> Table 3
Main table------> Table 4
All 4 relationships have a join type of 2 (Include ALL records from 'Main table' and only those records from 'Table1/2/3/4' where the joined fields are equal)
However, 3 of them pull back the correct data when I refresh the Main table, but the 4th one doesn't - which appears to be to be set up in the exact same way. It does bring back data, but it's the wrong data or in the wrong order.
For example, if the related field in the Main table is "Sarah" - It needs to bring back "Programme", but some Sarah's pull through Programme, some are blank and some are another option altogether. Table 4 has no duplicates or typos etc and I've tried deleting it, loading it in again and creating a new relationship but nothing seems to work.
I have split database (B/E is in the SharePoint library, F/E has users on a local PCs). Sometimes, when I update/add data (does not matter if it is via form or directly in the table) it looks OK, but when I re-open the database, the data are gone.
Problem is that I cannot catch the moment when data were not saved (sometimes data are saved, sometimes not). I can point out this: if I re-enter the missing data, primary key continues subsequently, it looks like the data have never been entered. I tried to use script
Code: If Me.Dirty Then Me.Dirty = False
on "On Close" form event, does not work.
B/E is linked by VBA code and it looks OK (no error, Link Manager shows correct path). I suspect interrupted connetion to the SharePoint but I don't know how to check it. I implemented VBA script co keep open connection to the SP but the issue persists.
I have a contributor tracking table that is linked to a form of the same name. I created a make table from a query that calculates the total to date for each contributor (based on their contributor ID in the tracking table). I want to place this sum to date, in read only mode, on each contribution record for each contributor in the tracking table and on each master record in another table with the contact information for each contributor.
The contact table is in the one and the contributor tracking table is the many. If this isn't clear, I can upload the database. I essentially want to link a field from one table to a form with a different table source. The sum to date should only show for the record with a matching contributor ID.
I'm about to move to a back end / front end system, from a single database file. Before I do so, I want to make sure I have all bases covered so to speak.
My back end file will reside on a server. I am aware that path names are sometimes changed by network administrators without warning.
From tests, I notice that, if the path to the back end can't be found, one cannot open the front end database file at all (Access 2003).
My question is: if my back end file gets moved, or the path changed, how can I get into my front end file to update the linked tables.
I'm attempting to build a simple database for a martial arts tournament registration. The weight division (Fin, Fly, Heavy, etc.) depends on the age, the sex and the weight. I've tried this several different ways, most recently by using one table called "competitors" with all the entrant's information, and several other tables based on the age class/sex (i.e. I have a table called Age 8-9 Male with the weights and divisions in it, and other tables for the other ages/sex). So, basically, what I'd like to have happen is a report that will lookup in the correct table the division, based on the weight entered. In other words, for a record where the age is 8-9 and the sex is Male, the report compares the weight to the values in the 8-9 Male table, or if the record is a 12-13 Female, it looks in the 12-13 Female table for the weight, and places the correct division in the Division field of the report. Probably going about this wrong.....but any help would be appreciated.
user_change primary key = user_change_id (AutoNumber) user_id (Number) which relates to the user_id from "users" table change_type (Text) action_date (Date/Time) ...
In user_change I record any changes made to the users table.
What I am wanting to do, within a query, is pull basic details from the "users" table (forename, surname, etc.) which is working fine, but also add in SPECIFIC data from the user_change table if it exists.
I want to pull ALL rows from the users table, not just specific rows, and not just rows where my criteria for the user_change table match.
This is the data I want to pull from user_change...
The MOST RECENT action_date WHERE change_type is LIKE "*issued*".
However there won't be a change_type LIKE "*issued*" for everyone - I want it to be included only if it exists.
At the moment my query is ignoring any users who don't have a user_change record with "*issued*" in the change_type value. I'm also getting duplicate user rows where people have more than one value for "*issued*" - I only want the most recent one...
I need to pull data from multiple tables in order to show a "financial summary"..Currently I have: Company; BalanceSheet; Debt; Liabilities; Income..All tables have a lot of information (which is why I built them in multiple tables).
I need to build a form where I can use a combo box to select a company from a list.Once selected - I need to the form to pull selected information from each of the above tables. (As well as perform some math functions).I've been struggling with the relationships (They don't seem to make a difference) and I believe I am above and beyond what the wizards will accomplish.
I have read thread after thread but cannot seem to find a specific answer on how to accomplish this.To make matters more complex - Once finished I want to be able to select multiple companies and create a report from the fields mentioned above (IE: pick company A, B, and C and have all of there "current Assets" add up on one report)
This task was originally achieved using an Excel spreadsheet but it has become to confusing for users and difficult to save information for future use.I believe all of my fields are constructed correctly. how to compile the data from multiple tables into one form/report.
I have a form and a subform. I want to pull the data (current record) from a field (Unit) from the main form and use it in a report query, which is connected to my subform.
I thought I could create a variable (strVarUnit) then call the variable in query but I'm doing something wrong.
On the main form in the open event I created the variable ... Dim StrVarUnit as String
On the form after updating the Unit field I placed an event ... StrUnit = Me.Unit
I have several lookup fields in a table that reference data in other tables, each with two fields (unique nummber & text data). The combo boxes in the data entry form work fine, but when I produce reports, the unique number shows up in the output, not the text data from the second field. What can I do to force the data that I need to see in my reports?
I need filling in field information. I have all records of people in one table, and for all persons i have Fields A B C and D. For PersonA I want to have FieldA and FieldB be tailored to that person, but FieldD to be pulled from PersonB's FieldB when PersonB's FieldA Value is typed into PersonA's FieldC. If it makes it easier, I want A Record to show
I understand that any data that is inputted into a form is always transferred back to the table in question.
In the form I created, I had
4 subheading scores added together to form another subheading named function =([1]+[2]+[3]+[4])/4 was the formula that I put into the control source. The calculation worked fine on the form giving me the correct name. However, this number did not transfer back to the table simple being labelled as zero. Can someone please advice!
I'm trying to perform a massive data dump. I have about 1,000 records that need to be added into my database. This is coming off an Excel spreadsheet.
I don't know if this is possible: I have a table, tblTorders, which is linked to the table, tblItems. When I open the tblTorders, I can click on the plus sign to expand and see the related data in tblItems.
How can I import data to populate the fields in both of these tables? I can't use the import function because you can only select to import it into one table.
Do I do it through a query.... I'm not sure where to go on this one.
I have 2 linked tables, I would like to join these tables in access, however the first table's field is a memo and the second table is a number. I have tried to cint() the field in a query but I get an error message "Explicit conversion from datatype text to smallint is not allowed"
I have a table in MS Access 2010 that is a link to an external data file in .csv format. I assumed that it was not possible to append data to a linked table until recently. I appended 3 records to the linked table and discovered that the 3 records were appended to the table and the external data file it was linked to.
I currently have a CSV Table consisting of 30 fields linked to my access database, now and again I need to add additional fields. but each time I do this I'm having to relink the csv and rename all the field names etc..
Is it possible for me to add a new field directly in the CSV files and quickly refresh the linked table in access to pick up the new field? I've tried the Table Linked Manager. but it doesnt pick up the new field
I want to copy three of my tables from the back end to another database (backup) at regular intervals. When using docmd.CopyObject and docmd.TransferDatabase it is the link that get copied (naturally) and not the table itself.
I have a database consisting of three linked tables, with ID as unique identifier (primary key).
I would have expected the data type for my unique identifier, especially in the main table, to be Autonumber. However, I discovered with some surprise that the primary key (ID) in
Table 1 (Main table) is data type: number, field size: double
whereas in table 2 and table 3 the ID is data type: autonumber (field size: long integer)
It must have happend "SOMEHOW" when I divided the original single table.
Is this as it should be? Or could it lead to trouble later on?
If not as should be, is there anything I can do right now to rectify the situation with risking upsetting the relationships and all?
What precautions should I take, apart from taking a backup?
I have an Access DB with hundres of queries and reports, now I have to use an external DB (Oracle) and export data keeping the rest, no problem with that, I have added linked tables through odbc and works fine.
My problem is that some of the tables have field names with spaces, and Oracle doesn't admit them. Does anybody knows how to solve it without having to modify all the queries, etc?, I've been thinking about aliases or views over the linked table but I haven't found a way to create these.
We have a database (Access 2007) with several linked tables to an MS-SQL 2008 instance. All the text fields that I have issue with are nvarchar(255) on MS-SQL. The odd thing it will not allow a full 255 characters to be entered into the field. It will fail to save unless the number of characters is about 238 or 239 characters (not sure of the exact number of characters). It shows the field as a text and field size of 255 in Access .
I am having the problem of importing a database from Excel/Msaccess 2000 to a Msaccess 2000 database from which the data was originally exported. The Database consists of two tables connected in a querry and the two tables has a unique primary key thru which the two tables are linked using a querry. While importing only two tables are listed in the importing wizard and not the querry.
So how to import the data to the two tables connected by a querry using a primary unique key.
I'm using Access and Excel 2007.... I know how to import an Excel spreadsheet as a table.
I have several supplier price lists in Excel. I want to keep my vendor price lists up to date.
When one of my vendors tell me that a price has changed on a particular item, I figure that I could have a form that I could use to enter the changes.
I believe the form would look like:
Field: "Vendor" (drop down list to choose from. Name of the Supplier price lists) Required. Field: "OEM" (Key Field found in each table) Required. Field: "Brand" (Field found in each table) Not required. Field: "Price" (Field found in each table) Required.
OEM would be the unique key field.
If I enter the Vendor name and then the OEM number it would show if there is already that number in the Vendor price list and I could make changes. Or I could enter new data in that vendor price list.
I have a linked table using ODBC. The table linked has improper field type: all numeric fields are linked as decimal. Because of this if I want to import the contens of this linked table in one new, the database has high dimension.
find a place where I can set the field conversion for linked tables or to make Access to performe the better type conversion (if the field is integer on source table to be integer on linked table as well and so on).
Hello all. Hope I describe my problem correctly. :D
I have a near complete database with forms linking to tables. Tables have relationships with keys set to ref. integrity/cascade records.
Here is the problem -
My forms are meant for people to input data into these tables. However, I do not want them to change those keys.
Problem 1) If I set primary/foreign keys to "autonumber" I cannot get the relationships to recognize ref. integrity and the records will not cascade, and will not update.
Problem 2) If I set primary/foreign keys to "double integer" then if someone enters a new record into the forms, it is recorded as "zero" when it should be updating in numerical order (I have 479 records in the database, so the next new record should be 480).
Problem 3) If I change it any other way - from double integer or auto number, the tables do not update at all, or do not update correctly.
What is going on here? I thought creating forms was a fairly simple task - create the form, it is related to the table, update the form, it updates the table. I mean, duh.
Thanks anyone for your help, because Microsoft's site sux.
Why is it when I click on the TblCarerdetails and try to open a record with the plus sign I am present with the following error message Enter Parameter value CarerID///The frmCarerRota seems to be working ok, the relationships seem to be ok i.e TblCarers can have many rotas i.e. a different TblRota each week (1 - M)
TblClients can have different TblRotas each week (1 - M).why the tables are not linking correctly, if I click on the TblCarer plus sign.I should see the Rota details and a plus sign. If click on the plus sign, I should see the clients details. Therefore I am assuming that my relationships are not correct, I think I need to add an association table, but where and what fields do I need to add/create.
