MS Access Distribution With MySQL Backend.
Feb 2, 2007
On my development machine everything works great, but I know that I'm going to run into problems with distribution.
I don't think there is a way, but I'll ask. Is there any way to get around not having to install the ODBC MySQL drivers on each computer? One of the reasons I'm migrating to MySQL for a backend is the fact that I'll be going from 10 users to 150 users, each of which has a "locked down" PC, which would mean logging into each with Admin rights to install the driver. Not an impossible task, but a pain.
Is is possible to have a "shared" source for the driver? I have only a rudimentary understanding of that process.
Thanks in advance for any help that someone can provide, or some answers pointing me in the right direction.

If I want to distribute a front end to connect with a MySQL back end ... do I need to set up the system DSN on each workstation that will be using the front end?

I have an Access front end and backend right now, however when I made the backend I made it so that Access stores the attachments in the backend instead of a path to the backend. Now the database is growing rapidly and I need to migrate to a MySQL backend. I'm not sure how this will work with the attachments though? I definitely want to just store paths to the attachments in the MySQL database. Whats the best way to do this?

I am creating a CAD Drawing database / Distribution list. I can only seem to distribute one drawing i.e single field to one person. Is there a way to have multiple distribtion on one field without creating multiple distribution fields?
What I have is a database which contains Drawing Numbers - I need to create a report that shows where the drawing has been distributed to, with it's current revision status and the date is was sent.I am having trouble trying to use multiple revisions and mutiple people in the distribution list with one drawing.

What's the best way to go about this?
Right now I have about 40 personnel using 40 different Excel files. Each day, each file needs to be copied and pasted into one large file. I've recently had luck replacing several of my personal Excel files with MS Access and now completely hooked on using databases. I would love to replace all of those Excel files with a Database on the network, at the end of the date, compiling everything together would be as easy as a query, and possibly an export (if we needed to send the Excel file out as we sometimes need to).
I've got the use of a Network, but here's the rub. I'm the only one with MS Access installed. I can not talk my boss into buying the additional licenses needed for Access on their computers.
My edition is also not a "Developer Edition" as I've seen where you can create a runtime version, so I guess that's out.
What would be a suitable "frontend" to do something like this. I'm pretty decent at Access, but certainly no expert. What is the best/easiest options that I should be looking at?
I'm willing to learn something new if I have to (which I probably will). I'm also willing to spend some of my own money to put something on my machine at home if it will help me develop something. I just need options because I don't know enough to make a decision about this.
Thanks in advance.

I am building my frist database with MySQL as a backend to Access. I am using the ODBC driver and it looks very interesting. I have a question already though. I know that I can use the InnoDB engine and create relationships within MYSQL to enfro referential integirty, but should I? Or should I create the relationships in Access and let Access do the enforcing? Will my Access application report MySQL errors?
Thanks for the time.

Hey, Just wanted to throw the question out there, I already asked another member on their opinion on this but havent heard anything back yet, so im going to also throw the quesation out here as well and see what i get. Im new to databases and started out trying to learn Access with the intention that what i learned in Access i could use to learn MySQL, I figured access was a easier starting point to get my feet wet. I eventaully want to apply my databases to the web and im not sure but just wanted to find out. Does access have capabilities to manage a site where customers create an account on the site and log in and everything?? I was thinking access cant really do it and if it could it might be hard, so thats why i was looking into MySQL. I guess what im really asking is whats the difference between Access and MySQL, and what advantages and disadvantages do they have?? Everybodys opinion is welcome, it all helps me out. Thanks! ~[MikE]~

I have Microsoft Access on my desktop connecting to a MySQL database at my host, using an ODBC driver. I can read the data just fine. But when I try to add another record, it won't seem to do it.
Is it possible to update a MySQL database from MS Access on my desktop?
I have just one table. Very simple. Is it to do with primary key number generation or something?
Thanks,
Jon

Hi all,
hope someone can help me with this.
Before we moved webhosting company we could have external access to our MySql database which was great as our MS Access system would periodically pull data from our MySql site (namely customer enquiries which were entered via a form on our website) and dump them in our MS Access live quotes table all automatically.
With our current host (which seems to be the norm from my web-searches) they only allow local access to the MySql system.
My question is, how can I oversome this hurdle without having to move hosting company. I really don't want to move again as it's a real pain.
All suggestions welcome.

I have converted my MS Access database tables to MySQL Server tables. I am trying to use the MS Access front end to cooperate with the MySQL Backend database. I have created a system DSN, without problems.
My issue is when I Open MS Access --> Open File --> Files of Type: ODBC Databases, nothing happens. It does not give me the option to connect to the MySQL database I just created. I also tried to import data by linking tables (again, choosing the ODBC databases option), and it does the same thing. Does anyone know what I may be doing wrong?

Could someone please help me?
At work we have a website with a mysql database attached to it. It keeps data such as customer name address postcode contact id etc.
Currently our main database is made in access.
I need to transfer data from the website database (which is in mysql) to our access database. And would like this to happen regulary. We have been quoted £1800 for someone to do this!
As this is a new job i would like to be able to do this myself, is it hard to do?
Could someone provide me with some information of how to do this? or where to start.
Much appriciated.

Hello
I“m working in an application using Access as FE and MySql as BE.
When I add some registers to this linked table, OK.
Problem: When I try to add a lot of registers (700.000!) it does“nt work and the msg is that the computer does“nt have memory resources to do the job.
If I try the same with Access tables it works fine.
MySql configuration, perhaps?
Thanks a lot

I don't know if this is thebest place for this, but here goes....
I have an Access FE using MYSQL 4.1 BE. I have several forms and PassThrough queries (using MYSQL syntax not supported or available in Access).
How can I use form field values to use as criteria for these queries?
FOr example, in a pure Access database. I may have a form 'Employees' with a text box 'EmployeeName'. THen have a query....
SELECT * FROM tblEMployees WHERE EmployeeName = [Forms]![Employees]![EmployeeName]
If I were to add this variable to my pass-through queries, it errors. How can I do the same thing, passing my form fileds to an Access Query? I am trying to do this right in the SQL view of the queries, not in VBA or Macros or anything.
Thanks,
Scott

I have an MS-SQL backend which i use for my data source. I then use Access for reporting services. (It works so much better than SQL Reporting Services 2005).
this seems simple, but i can't get it to work. Everytime the users start up access, It pops up a login and password for the ODBC link. Even when i have the password and login setup in the ODBC DSN, it still requests it everytime you start connecting to the datasource.
Is there anyway to somehow hard code this into the Access front end somehow so i don't have to give the password to the users?

I'm currently researching on how to best migrate from Access back-end to a SQL backend, and was able to find wealth of information on how well Access can play with various SQL servers, how ODBC drivers are implemented, and how JET handles queries to backend. If this helps matter, I'm considering using MySQL as a backend.
That said, there are some gaps in my research that I'm hope someone will be able to fill in for me.
1) I have couple of queries that may use Access's custom function not otherwise supported in SQL servers. If I based the query on otherwise executable query, would JET be able to pass the sub query to SQL, and get the recordset and apply the next query using custom functions without any problems?
2) In general, DAO is best when you're using JET, but ADO is best for ODBC. I'm not clear whether it's possible to use a mixture of ADO and DAO, provided I've disambiguated the library (which I already did anyway) to make even efficient use of recordset. For example, I'd use ADO to work with data from backend and once it's bought over here, switch to DAO for faster handling by JET. Is that possible *and* advisable?
3) I found lists about limitations or problems that may arise due to differences between Access and SQL, which is good to know. However, I never found any answer as whether VBA may cause problems with using SQL data. Let's say I have a form that has lot of VBA coding to handle calculations, multiple selection in listbox to be added to a junction table, dynamically changing rowsource for a combobox, whatever that is based on a query that otherwise runs fine with SQL server- will the form still work just as fine or are there going to be any surprises after migrations?
4) Somehow related, if this is supported by whatever SQL server I may use, would I be better advised to use stored procedures in place of VBA for Access forms?
Thanks for your feedback. :)

I have two laptop computers. Both have Access 2010 installed. Both computers are on the same Workgroup and each computer can access files on the other. Computers are connected with wireless connection. Computer 1 holds the backend data while computer 2 is used for data entry and connects to backend on computer 1.Both computers are used for data entry, and as I said, data is stored on computer 1 only.
Here's the problem. If I enter data on computers 1 and then open computer 2 I cannot access the data unless computer 1 exits and then reopens. If computer 1 does not exit and reopen I cannot access the data from computer 2. In addition, if I enter data in Computer 2 and save it then computer 1 can see the data and all is well. So, for everything to work I have to start the data entry in computer 2. If I start data entry with computer 1 then I have to go through the save and shutdown process.
I have tried requery and refresh, refreshpage, refreshrecord, etc, but with no success.

Im totally new at all this stuff, so any help is appreciated.
i have a database with one table that has many different attributes and almost 3000 records. this is all i have done, i have simply been loading in all of the data to the table, now that that is done i need to allow users to extract the data.
so, what is the best way to build a front end that allows the user to easily extract data from the database? ideally, i would like to have some sort of front end that would have a text input window where they could search for records matching attributes in the table that match or are close to the text they type in, with some additional options for honing down the search terms with dropdown menus, radio buttons, etc.
the problem is i really havent a clue on how to do that stuff. can anyone just give some general, beginner type steps for things i should be doing to create that "front end" i am visualizing. THANKS!
