Modules & VBA :: Browse For A File On Shared Drive And Link It To Record

Feb 24, 2015

I have a form displaying records. I would like the user to be able to select a button, browse for a file on a shared drive and link it to that record.

I have been exploring hyperlinking, which works for the most part, although I need it to display the share name rather than the drive assignment for that user. Such as drive1folder rather than C:folder.

Hyperlinking also unfortunatly requires the user to right click on a field select edit hyperlink then browse.

Modules & VBA :: Temporarily Map A Drive / Copy A File Then Remove Mapped Drive

Aug 29, 2014

My workaround was to temporarily map the URL to a vacant drive letter on the local machine, then copy the file over, then drop the mapped drive again. A bit clunky but doesn't incorporate much of a delay and this download only has to happen once per day.

The good news is, the file download / copy now works every time. The bad news is that removing the temporarily mapped drive after the copy has taken place, doesn't and I can't figure out why.

Here are the functions I use to map / unmap the drive :

Code:

Option Compare Database
Option Explicit

Private Const RESOURCETYPE_ANY = &H0&
Private Const CONNECT_UPDATE_PROFILE = &H1&
Private Const RESOURCE_CONNECTED As Long = &H1&

[Code] .....

I have separate functions to check existing drive mappings on the local machine and thus determine an appropriate vacant letter to use for the temporary mapping - they work fine.

Unfortunately the UnMapDrive function returns False (even though I switch the active drive to C: and force the connection to be cancelled with the fForce flag) So the mapping always remains on the users profile.

I don't want to permanently map drives on the users' profiles, just briefly for the purposes of this daily file download.

Shared Drive

Oct 23, 2007

Hello,

I have an exrternal shared drive "E:"where I put my be files (which are constantly accessed by users with fe's from different terminals). Everytime
I reboot the computer that I am working on (where the external drive is), I have to set up the permissions of the shared drive "E:" all over again, otherwise other computers have no access to E. Is there a way that I could
fix this and not having to set permissions every time I reboot my computer?
For some reason, the permissions are lost.

Different Paths For Shared Drive

Feb 2, 2006

Hello all:

I have the following code to retrieve doucments:

strPath = "G:CorpCustomer Files"

Application.FollowHyperlink strPath & "" & textbox1 & "-" & textbox2 & ".doc"

This works fine from my computer because the shared drive on my computer is saved on the G drive.

I tried using the code from a coworker's computer, but got an error because her shared drive is : "X:CorpCustomer Files"

Basically anyone can access the Corp server through any drive depends on how it was mapped.

How do I get around this so that it works from any computer as long as the user has the Corp share drive?

Thanks much.

General :: Security For Database On Shared Drive

Oct 3, 2013

I need securing an Access database. I am about to put the database on a shared drive. I want myself to be able to do anything (of course), my co-worker Paul to be able to ONLY enter information (along with being able to view everything like forms and reports), and my boss to ONLY be able to view everything (form/report wise).

I found this post [URL] .... about how to secure a database. I spent all day doing it, but it didn't work at all! I just got a bunch of errors whenever I tried to do anything, so I deleted the database and re-used an earlier version.

Access 2003 Backend On Shared Network Drive.

Feb 8, 2006

Hi all...

I have an ACCESS 2003 application with front end in the local machine and backend on the shared network drive. I mapped this drive to E: in my computer and all my linked tables show the E:folernameDatabasename.mdb as the source.

When I install this application in an other computer where they have mapped the same drive to F: , I am getting error that says "E:foldernameDatabasename.mdb" not found. How can use absolute network drive(like \cscrd eamfoldernamedatabasename.mdb) name to link the tables?

Thanks in advance.

How To Link 4 Databases To Shared Tables?

May 19, 2006

I have 4 databases that share 3 tables.

Each database is used for different purposes and other tables which do not relate to the other databases.

My question is: how do I set up the back ends so each database can retrieve and enter data into the 3 shared tables without conflicts??

I know how to split each of the databases to front and back ends but how would I link them all to the 3 tables they share? Should I create one back end with only the 3 shared tables and link the separate back ends for each database???

Any help much appreciated!

How Do I Link To Backend Db Without Using Mapped Drive Letter

May 16, 2005

Hi:

I have a front-end and back-end database.
Front end is at //fserv/database
back end is at //fserv/database/administration

I have sent front end path to users and they can bookmark it to find front-end. When I linked to the backend in the administration folder I had the path mapped to drive T:

Problem is the users do not have this same mapping to drive T: They may have other paths already mapped to that drive.

The users are getting the message:"t: est.mdb is not a valid path. Make sure the path name is spelled correctly and that you are connected to the server on which the file resides."

Is there anyway to link the the backend tables using just a path like:
//fserv/database/administration

Thanks in Advance!

Link Pictures And Adding Browse Button

Jun 29, 2012

My job has recently decided that I need to build a database of test pictures, I've read many forums on the link pictures / putting browse button as I gather it makes the database too large with attachments.

My problem is I think I grasp the concept but I cant seem to use the code / Im not sure where im actually putting the code.

e.g imgControl.Picture = CurrentProjectPath & subforldername & Me.ImageName

Where do I put this ? does this go in the field or in a macro ?

Also for the browse to button I have this

Private Sub Explore_Click()
' Gets a filename from the filedialog control and puts it into
the
' "Filename" textbox control.
' Be sure to rename the Common Dialog Control "cd1"

[Code] ....

When i try to put this into a button it doesnt work.

I've attached my amazing database for reference, you will see pictures attached, these were before I knew about linking and I want the links to work like the attachments.

(Using access 2007)

File Already In Use?? It's A Shared DB!!

Mar 14, 2008

Hey folks, me again...

I have a big problem and it's stopping us from rolling out the db to our call-center... cliff-notes at the end...

I have a database that tracks customer calls.
The db files are located on the network in a folder that everybody has access to.

The db is arranged as such:
A backend that holds all the tables.
A front-end for Customer Service Reps with tables that are linked from the backend
A front end for Managers linked in the same way.
And a front end for our corporate folks which is also linked in the same way.

I've tried replicating, making mde's and creating a shortcut on each CSR's desktop. I've also made sure that I use the UNC to link the tables. I've also made sure the db's are shared (I think)

Cliff-notes:
when I have the front-end open on my desktop, and somebody else tries to open it, they get an error. "The file is already in use"

Am I doing something wrong Or am I missing some type of setting??

Browse [Find A Directory Or File]

May 10, 2005

(Referring to this post (http://www.access-programmers.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=75790) by ghudson)

Hi,

This post was very useful, it really helped me out, but I do have one question. My database will be used by multiple users and will be stored on a mapped network drive, just as the files that I want to link to. Now unfortunately not all machines are configured the same, so the same network drive can have different drive letters depending on the machine and this might cause problems. Is there a way to modify the code to get the absolute network path instead of the drive letter?

thx
Luke

I'm trying to add a control to my form that I don't know how to do.

On my form, I want the user to be able to click a button which will open up the standard file open dialog box. The user then will be able to browse through the appropriate directory and select an image file which will be saved on that specific record.

Attached is a strip down database as an example.

How can I do this? Any help would be greatly appreciated - I'm trying to do this for my work.

Browse [Find A Directory Or File] Code

Dec 11, 2006

I'm having a small difficulty in using the code example ghudson posted for Browse [Find a directory or file]. First off, the code works great. Thanks a lot for posting it!

The problem I am having is when linking a folder via dBrowseDirectory. The folders I am linking are on a shared network drive and I am trying to figure out how to set the initial directory to default to the networked PC. This way the user doesn't have to navigate to the shared drive every time. All they would have to do is navigate to the particular folder to link (2 clicks instead of 10+).

The dBrowseFiles function allows to set an initial directory, however I cannot figure out how to set it for dBrowseDirectory. Is there any way to do this by altering your code for dBrowseDirectory?

Thanks in advance!

General :: Browse Button To Open File Path

Jul 22, 2012

I have a field on a form which the user currently has to manually type in the file path to a specific picture on a local drive. After the file path is entered, the path is linked and the picture is shown in an image box. I did this because I didnt want to bog the database down with attached files.

I wondered if I could have a browse button, which when pressed brought up the browse window to allow you to locate the image (using the standard windows browser). Then when you clicked ok, it writes the filename into the correct field on the form.
