Modules & VBA :: Eliminate Leading Space In Front Of String
Sep 9, 2013
I am having an issue with some imports. As you will be able to see from the attached Db file, some fields import into MS Access with a leading space in front.
The problem is, Access doesn't seem to see it. For example, (in Query_1) I try to find the leading space with a Left and a Mid function using: " ", "", and Null... but none of these criteria match.
However if you use Left(string, 1)... the empty space will post. So my question is: How can I programmatically eliminate these leading spaces when I can't state if there is a leading space or not?
Take a look...

I have a report with an embedded subreport. It's set up in two columns, ordered across then down.
My problem is when column 1, row 1 section is taller than column 2, row 1 section. It creates a lot of extra white space as I fill in the rest of the report. Is there a way to eliminate that space or am I stuck?

I have a table containing names. Unfortunately, the first and middle name are in the same field, and not all have middle names. I need to separate them out in a report. Is it possible to search the field and break at the first space?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

I sometimes get a last name with two names not connected by a dash (i.e. Smith-Jones), instead it is entered as "Smith Jones". When I get it from Excel into Access is there a way to replace the space with an underscore in Access? I know I can do it in Excel, but I need that Excel file the way it is for other purposes.

Code:
strSQL = ("INSERT INTO " & strTable & " Select c.OrderNumber, c.Item, c.RepId, p.ProductNbr, p.Name, [tbl_LBP_Sales Location Num].[Rep Region Code] FROM CalculateTotal c, dbo_PartNew p, [tbl_LBP_Sales Location Num] WHERE ([Structure] like '*" & u & "*') AND ([ProductNbr] = '" & txtPartNumber & "')")
CurrentDb.Execute strSQL
It keeps giving me this error and I don't know why?...
I tried replacing the brackets around Rep Region Code with quotation marks as well as these things `` but kept getting the same error...

I am trying to build a newer database 2010, based on an older one,2000, that has been locked tight and I cannot see the modules to kinda get a reference of where to start. I am trying to find a VBA code that will allow me to import a several text files to one table. The text files are all in the same format but I cannot remove the page headers and footers to get the table to look right. I have attached an example of the text file i am trying to import but it is a stripped down version for information protection.
Also, it appears in the old Database Table once imported as:
J.Smith 1234 01 ABCD ABCD HGJV 2345 ABCDE ABC6 Qual Date Date
J.Smith 1234 01 ABCD ABCD HGJV 2345 ABCDE ABC6 Qual Date Date
J.Smith 1234 01 ABCD ABCD HGJV 2345 ABCDE ABC6 Qual Date Date
J.Adam 1234 01 ABCD ABCD HGJV 2345 ABCDE ABC6 Qual Date Date
J.Adam 1234 01 ABCD ABCD HGJV 2345 ABCDE ABC6 Qual Date Date
J.Adam 1234 01 ABCD ABCD HGJV 2345 ABCDE ABC6 Qual Date Date
If I could import the text files and end up with a table like this, it would be all i need as i could run all the queries i need from this.

I've got a piece of VBA scripting which runs as an event linked to a button on my MS Access form.
I maintain a database of members of staff at my organisation. It's pretty outdated...
I'm basically wanting to pull in their updated data (extracted from on our payroll system) from a spreadsheet, into a form, when clicking a button on a particular person's record.
This is what I have so far.
Code:
start = Forms!frm_main2!txt_start_row.Value - 1
conv = DDEInitiate("EXCEL", "Staff List.xlsx")
cell_employee_number = "R" & start & "C1"
cell_surname = "R" & start & "C2"
[Code] ....
The function "CStr(DDERequest())" converts the cell number into the readable data, however I seem to have whitespace below the value.
What would I need to do to strip out this whitespace? Would I use strtrim? If so, I am unsure of the syntax... how would I incorporate strtrim into the above?

I found this code on a website that uses a form to search all tables in my database. Problem is that when I click "search" I get an invalid argument error. I am guessing that there is a problem with my SQL string. Missing space? Missing quotation marks? etc etc.... Anyway, here is the code:
Dim tdf As DAO.TableDef
Dim fld As DAO.Field
Dim rs As DAO.Recordset
Dim strSearch As String
Dim strTableName As String
[Code] ....

I have a small system that consists of a back end data base and 2 front ends. having 2 front ends was a historic reason but they cover 2 distinct processes in the system.
I now have the need for using the same module(s) in both front ends. Each has a copy which is fine if nothing changes but when it does I have to apply the changes made (or copy over in its entirety) from one front end to the other.
Although this is no big deal I can forsee it slipping through the net.
Can 2 front ends access the SAME module and if so how?

I am after a script to lock a userform to the front but still be able to work on other forms.
I have an excel userform in access which does this and better still it is like a sticky note as it stays on the screen even when going to another program, but as I am working in vba all day long, every time I change something the form closes, it works great when not using vba though.

I have a split database. When the front end db is updated, i am attempting to delete the end users copy and replace with the updated version.
I have gotten as far as being able to open Database A, Open Database B with A and Close Database A, but it will not let me delete Database A from B because the procedure originated from Database A.

I have a Form with a control button that opens a Table using VBA code.
I have made quite a few similar databases before and usually when the Table opens it opens "above' or in front of the Form.
This time the Table opens but behind the Form.
I would like the Table to open and appear in front of the Form.
Is there a setting or something to control which displays on top?

I have written the following code to open the Outlook 2013 'Select Names Dialog' with a command button called 'btnTo' from an Access 2010 form, this code works fine to display the dialogue box but it is usually hidden and the user has to 'click' the icon on the task bar to show the dialogue box. I know that there is an API that will bring the dialogue box to the front but how to code the API to do this.
Code:
Private Sub btnTo_Click()
On Error GoTo Err_btnTo_Click
Dim olkApp As Outlook.Application
Dim olkSes As Outlook.NameSpace
Dim olkSND As Outlook.SelectNamesDialog
[Code] .....

I've written a function which opens the Outlook GAL dialog, allows users to select recipients and passes back a 2-D array (recipients and type i.e. To, CC or BCC).Here is the code :
Code:
Public Function GetContactsFromOutlookGAL() As Variant
Dim appOutlook As Object ' Outlook Application
Dim objNameSpace As Object ' Outlook NameSpace
Dim objSelectNamesDialog As Object ' Outlook Select Names Dialog
[code]...
The only problem I have is that when I 'display' the SelectNamesDialog, it doesn't make it the active window and bring it to the front - it just opens the dialog in Outlook and you have to navigate to the main Outlook window to find it.I'd like for the dialog to 'popup' - ideally, without the main Outlook window dragging along behind
I believe it's possible (judging from this article) to achieve this using API's - specifically, a combination of FindWindow (to retrieve the window handle) and ShowWindowLong (to set it to a topmost window in front of all other windows).

I have a database that I've split and have deployed to 7 persons.
The thing is, I have three (3) forms:
Form 1
Form 2
Form 3
...that require changing a portion of a line in each form's respective VBA codes. I need to change the directories to where an excel workbook is stored after exporting, and another is where same excel is moved to after being uploaded.
At the moment, during deployment I have to manually change the directories.
I was thinking of maybe a pop-up form with four (4) fields that allows the user to select his/her name at the start-up of their frontend app, and paste the directories in the other text boxes provided.
This information will then be used to replace the directories in the VBA.
If I were to make changes and have to redeploy, I would have to do everything manually again.

Is there any particular reason I would choose to use
DoCmd.RunSQL "insert into...
Versus
CurrentDb.Execute "insert into.... ??
I am using an unbound form on the front end of my database to populate the backend tables (multiple tables). Some forms only have a few fields, while other forms have about 15 fields with 3-4 tables updating.
I am okay using the DoCmn.RunSQL , but I keeping reading on the forum that others chose CurrentDB.Execute and it has me thinking.
My database is stored on a network drive with only on front end.

I'm trying to make a form that shows what the last record was next to the empty space where you enter a new record.
This is so the user knows that what they are entering is roughly in line with what has come before.
So for example if I was recording temperature every May, I would like a form that has a field called temperature and next to that field I would like to see last year's temperature.
Records:
Date | Temp
2014 | 20.5
2013 | 18.5
2012 | 19.0
2011 | 22.7
2010 | 15.2
So when I enter the record for 2015 I have a box that says: Temp and next to that box is "Last year was 20.5" or something like that.

I'm trying to get a value from a spreadsheet to import into my MS Access database. Currently I am trimming the spaces/carriage returns from it but need to strip some more data from the value.
Here is my code.
trimmed_department = Trim(Replace(new_department, vbCrLf, ""))
Example value being "123 Point 5 Finance and Accounting"
I want to use Mid (I think?) to remove the "123 Point 5" (it is always the same with no exceptions) but don't know how to use it as I don't know how to use multiple parameters within a string.
