Modules & VBA :: Multi Criteria - Checking For A Value To Be Null
Oct 16, 2014
Me.Text11 = Nz(DAvg("[final whse-in diff]", "dbo_inventory", "[CAFETYPE]=" & Me.Text7 And "isnull(me.[DATE FIXED])=" & True And "isnull(me.DATE_IN)=" & True), 0)
I am getting a type mismatch error with this.
My question is:
1. is the syntax correct....
2. Is my way of checking for a value to be null correct....

The following code doesn't check null condition in Scannedby field. The scannedby has text data type. The code gives me all the data where scandate=20130722 but doesn't check that scanned by can't be blank.
Code:
rs.Open "select count(*) from BatchTBL2 where scandate=20130722 and scannedby <> null", cn, adOpenKeyset, adLockOptimistic
j = rs.fields(0).Value

Staff are monitored to make sure they are keeping up to date with our customers. A customer can have multiple projects going through the factory at any one time. Each customer has a record per project and a 'general' record. Ideally we would like our staff to be able to move the 'general' record when they update a project record as opposed to either having to find and then update the general record after, or forgetting and calling the customer again 2 days later!
Including a msgbox for the EnqNum seems to show the general record correctly, however being new to access I am unsure if I have the update part correct.
Code:
If Me.chkMoveGen.Value = "-1" Then
Dim EnqNum As Integer
EnqNum = DLookup("[e_id]", "tblEnquiries", "[c_id]=" & Me.txtc_id & " and [e_status] = " & "13")
DoCmd.RunSQL "UPDATE tblEnquiries " & _
" SET e_date_due=#" & Format(Me.txte_date_due, "MM/DD/YYYY") & "#" & _
" WHERE e_id= EnqNum"

Morning all,
Quick question... I figured out how to make all the searching items work... individually. The problem is is that I want to be able to search with two fields at a time. For example, say i have mo, date, job, pay and i want to seach for the MO and JOB and query the results accordingly. I can't get it to do that. Would I have to make a large If statement? I'm not entirely sure. Also now my problem is that it won't execute my first if statement or I should say it ignores it all togeather. I know it executes the code in the order it is written. If someone could shed some light I would be much apprecative. As always here is the code and attached is the program. What I'm working on is in the query table.
I also would like to be able for it to say if the fields MO and JOB do not comeup witha result for a messege to display there is no result. Or if the field is null not to do anything. I tried doing that in some of my code to no success perhaps I did somthing wrong.
Have a great day!
Dim strSQL As String
Dim sqlStringWHERE As String
Dim strhead As String
Dim strJOIN As String
' strSQL = "SELECT * from Panel WHERE MO like " & Chr$(39) & "*" & Me.qMO & "*" & Chr$(39)
strJOIN = " AND "
strhead = "SELECT * from Panel "
If Len(Me.qMO & vbNullString) Then
sqlStringWHERE = "WHERE [MO] like " & Chr$(39) & "*" & Me.qMO & "*" & Chr$(39)
Else
sqlStringWHERE = "WHERE [MO] = " & Chr$(39) & Me.qMO & Chr$(39)
sqlStringWHERE = sqlStringWHERE & strJOIN
End If
If Len(Me.qCode & vbNullString) Then
If Len(sqlStringWHERE) = 0 Then
sqlStringWHERE = "WHERE "
End If
sqlStringWHERE = "WHERE [CODE] like " & Chr$(39) & "*" & Me.qCode & "*" & Chr$(39)
Else
sqlStringWHERE = "WHERE [CODE] = " & Chr$(39) & Me.qCode & Chr$(39)
sqlStringWHERE = sqlStringWHERE & strJOIN
End If
strSQL = strhead & sqlStringWHERE

I have a search form with blank fields tied to a table, four criteria search boxes, and a button to take the input from the search boxes, search the table, and populate the results on the form's blank fields. As of now, it works as long as all four criteria boxes aren't null.I used filters to achieve this, and here's the code that works as long as all four boxes are not empty. (My criteria boxes are as follows: a textbox called "Keyword" and three combo boxes called HRCombo, BuildingCombo, and RoomCombo, and the fields they're tied to are as follows: "Item Description" "HR Holder" "Building" "Room") My first line "Me.Filter = ..." was broken up to make it easier to view.
Code:
Me.Filter = "[Item Description] Like " & Chr(34) & Me.Keyword & "*" & Chr(34) & "
AND [HR Holder] = '" & Me.HRCombo & "'" & " AND [Building] = '" & Me.BuildingCombo
& "'" & " AND [Room] = '" & Me.RoomCombo & "'"
Me.FilterOn = True
Me.Requery
I need it to be able to do the search no matter which combination of criteria boxes have input. Someone recommended using if statements to do the following: Create four strings, one for each criteria box. Use 4 if statements to check if the box is null - if it is null, assign an asterisk to its string, and if its not null, assign the value I used for the above Me.Filter statement to each box's string. Then, use Me.Filter and concatenate the four strings at the end. Here's the code I used for this, and, with my limited knowledge, I can't get it to work.
Code:
Dim StrA as String, StrB as String, StrC as String, StrD as String
If Me.Keyword is null then
StrA = "*"
else
StrA = [Item Description] Like " & Chr(34) & Me.Keyword & "*" & Chr(34)
End If
[code]....

I am trying to make a DLookup function to return the ID number of an entry that matches 2 or 3 criteria but I am struggling to get the syntax correct for the second and third criteria.
Here is what I have so far:
1 criteria, works fine =DLookUp("[timedata]![id]","timedata", "[processdone] =" & Forms![Mainform]![p11] )
2 criteria, works fine =DLookUp("[timedata]![id]","timedata", "[processdone] = " & Forms![Mainform]![p11] & " And [timedata]![BGSnum] = 1001" )
BGSnum is a numerical value but it changes for each form I load, so what I want to do is use the form location value as the criteria.
E.g.
=DLookUp("[timedata]![id]","timedata", "[processdone] = " & Forms![Mainform]![p11] & " AND [BGSnum] = ' " & Forms![Mainform]![BGS] & "' ')
and possibly a third criteria too. This is where I am having problems and the syntax is wrong so MS Access wont let me save the macro.

Hi everyone. Apologies if this has come up before, but the search terms I've tried here and on google keep turning up the wrong information.
At work I manage a large database with many tables. It stores data for participants in a research study. Each table stores the data for a different test, so one participant may have multiple records. Primary keys for these tables are defined by a combination of the participant and date of test fields. (Everything is dependent upon a table that stores the static info for participants, so the database is normalized.)
I want to be able to make a table that lists target participants and dates, and then create a query that looks at this table and pulls all the available data from various tables for those individuals that was recorded within one year of the target dates.
I've successfully made queries that meet these criteria while pulling data from only one table. The problem I'm having is that when I try to pull from multiple tables, each with it's own date field that needs to be used as a criterion, I end up excluding almost all the data, because most of the target participants do not have all the requested data within the target dates.
I've tried being inclusive with my criteria (using ORs), but then I end up with tons of data that I don't want and I need to filter through it, which defeats the purpose of the query.
Any advice on handling this issue, or do I basically just need to create a separate query for each table?
I'm sorry if this is too vague, but it's illegal for me to upload any of my own dataset. I could probably come up with an example if it's helpful, though.
Thanks!

I have been working on an application where I am collecting survey data in a database. There are multiple survey tools available to the user, and it's possible to complete multiple survey tools in the survey.My problem is, it's possible for the surveyor to complete some tools on one day and other tools on another day. I am having problems with trying to figure out how to add a tool that has not been previously added and keep in the same survey which is all held under a single Survey Number.
The first step in the function is to set a Record Number temporary variable based on whether or not the tool has been used (it's possible to use multiple instances of a survey tool, so need to know if the Record Number is '1', or the next number in the sequence.I've been trying to do this by checking a query for a Null and setting the temporary variable using something like:
IF ISNull("RecordNumber","qryRecordHeader") Then '1'
Else
DLast("RecordNumber","qryRecordHeader") +1
End IF
The second half works just fine, so if there is a previous record, it will add. But if it's Null, it doesn't work.I'm trying to avoid opening a temporary form to run the query and checking a field. Is there a way around that?

I would like to run an append query but only after I have checked a table for existing data. I want to see if a ralicarID exists in a table and if it doesnt the query should run. if the railcarid does exist but also has a check in and check out date then the query can also run.
I was thinking something like this
Dim RailcarInDatabase as number
' run query here that checks for the railcar id and returns a value
if railcarID in table then RailcarInDatabase =1 else RailcarInDatabase =0
And if If RailcarID in table and DateInShop is not null and DateOutShop is not null then RailcarInShop = 0
Something like that which will allow me to run the query only if the car is not in the database or it is currently not in the shop.

Access 2010. I've had to learn it at work because our DBA was let go and I was the only one willing to give it a go. Read a book or two and picked up some stuff on the internet.
Here's my problem:
I have a simple table -Employee with 4 fields. FirstName, LastName, Office and JobTitle. I have form called Form1 that has 3 control fields cboJobTitle (a combo box that is populated by a query that finds all the unique values of that field in the Employee table), cboOffice (same as above) and txtName (a text box to allow user input) that are used as the criteria for a multi-field query triggered by a button at the bottom of the form. The idea being that you could do a search using this form to find all the employees in one office or all the accountants in one office, or any other combination.
The main search query has the following criteria for each field -
Like [forms]![Form1]![cboOffice] & "*"
Like [forms]![Form1]![cboJobTitle] & "*"
Like [forms]![Form1]![txtName] & "*"
It works great...until I enter a record where one of those fields may be null, such as if I leave the JobTitle blank.
If I have two employees in an office in one city and then do a search for all the employees in that office, it only returns one record and ignores the one that has the null value in the JobTitle field.

I think the title pretty much sums it up....
I have a query where data is first sorted by user input; first field's criteria: [fieldname], then by another field's criteria: Is Null.
I know there are records containing null values in the second field, as I have run a select query with the criteria: Like "*", to make sure they are null, and not zero-length-strings.
The query is refusing to return any results...
Any ideas?

I do not understand what is happening here. I have foll0wing line in a calculated query field:
m: Switch([EmpID]<5,1) ' run Query 18 in attached example, A2007/2010
this produces 1 for all EmpID<5 and Null for all other EmpID's. All as expected.
But if I do this:
m: Switch([EmpID]<5,1,[EmpID]>=5,Null) ' run Query 19 in attached example
then the entire column is set to Null

Good morning everyone,
I use this code to filter a subform with multiple criteria.
Private Sub Filter_Click()
Dim strWhere As String
If Not IsNull(Me.Coordinator) Then
'Create Predicate
strWhere = strWhere & " AND " & "Orders.[EmployeeID] = " & Me.Coordinator & ""
End If
If Not IsNull(Me.Customer) Then
'Create Predicate
strWhere = strWhere & " AND " & "Orders.[CustomerID] = " & Me.Customer & ""
End If
If Not IsNull(Me.Supplier) Then
'Create Predicate
strWhere = strWhere & " AND " & "Orders.[SupplierID] = " & Me.Supplier & ""
End If
Me.Track_All_Orders.Form.Filter = strWhere
Me.Track_All_Orders.Form.FilterOn = True
End Sub
This Code works great, however i want to use it to filter my report as well, so I put strWhere as a global var and i wrote this code to generate the report with the same filters criteria as the subform:
Private Sub cmdGenerateReport_Click()
Dim stDocName As String
stDocName = "Statement"
DoCmd.OpenReport stDocName, acPreview, , strWhere
End Sub
Nothing happen when i click on cmdGenerateReport!! any clue?
Million thanks in Advance,
Best Regards,

Ive had a quick look at other threads to see if this question has been asked already, so hopefully Im not repeating a previous question!
I am completely new to Access but have been asked to perform multi-criteria queries across multiple tables. I realise it would be easier to just put all the information into one table, but if anyone could explain how to do the above I would be very grateful.
Thanks

Hello,
I have been trying to produce a front end for a multi criteria search. I have used one of the sample databases from the site and amended the code as necessary, but obviously not correctly. I can't get it to show me the records based on my search criteria.
I would be grateful if somebody could have a look and let me know what I've done wrong (cut down DB attached). If I can crack this I want to do another multicriteria search for other parameters.
One other question - is it possible to take those filtered records and dump them into a report? For example, say I select one parameter and want tpo print all records associated with that parameter?
Thanks
