Modules & VBA :: Prevent Shortcuts From Being Made
Oct 31, 2013
Is there a way to prevent users from making a shortcut to a database? I have my database split and I want users to copy the front end and paste it on their desktop. However, there is a high turnover rate among the people who will be using this database. As a result, I'm concerned that the instructions to copy and paste the database may not be passed along. I would like to avoid the possibility of someone making a shortcut to this database.
I would also like to prevent users from relocating the database by inadvertently dragging and dropping it in a new folder.The only person who should be able to move the database or work directly in the master copy of the front end is the person designated at the "admin" in my Users table (that would be myself and one other person). Is any of this possible?

I have a Form with multiple comboboxes and listboxes whose selections are assembled into a query. The combo-box selection goes into an IF-ELSE statement for a selection check (IsNull) and if there is no selection made, it is supposed give me all values (Blanks & Non Blanks)
Here is a sample of my code:
Code:
If IsNull(Me.cbReg.Value) Then
RegStrng = " Like '*'"
Else
RegStrng = Me.cbReg.Value
RegStrng = "= " & RegStrng
End If
I have several If-Else statements here and a final query assembly at the bottom of the code page which is as follows
Code:
MasterSql = "SELECT DISTINCT blah-blah-blah" & _
" INTO some more blah-blah" & _
" FROM even more blah-blah-blah" & _
" WHERE dbo_mytable.[Reg#]" & RegStrng & _
" AND the results from other If-Else statements similar to above"
Here is where the problem comes in:
I see the mistake in my If-Else statement
Code:
If IsNull(Me.cbReg.Value) Then
RegStrng = " Like '*'"
Like * means it will show me all rows where there are NON-Blanks. However, it skips all Blank Data.
What should the If IsNull() statement look like if I want to show all the values?
If there was only one combo-box and there was no selection made, then the resultant query should show me all results rather than only the results where there is some sort of data within the column filtered by the combobox.

I am trying to build a simple form to add data to a table.
One of the fields on the table is for Shortcuts to other documents held on the server / computer, but I can't seem to be able to either paste or add a shortcut to the relevant field in the Form.
Am I trying to do something which can't be done or am I missing something ?
Many Thanks

I hope this is the right forum for such a question, if not I apologize in advance.
I have an application that is being used by six people. When the newest version of it was built, I altered the desktop shortcut on everyone's PC to point to the newest version. Four of these shortcuts still work, but two are behaving somewhat erratically.
In the case of these two, clicking on the shortcut sometimes opens the older version of the application. I have recreated the shortcuts and they work for a while, before reverting to the older link. Going to the application via Explorer works fine.
While I am getting more comfortable with VBA, this area is outside anything I know. Could someone advise me on what affects whether shortcuts work or not? Do they automatically 'refresh'? If so, when?
In case it's relevant, everyone here is using the same versions of both XP and Access and everyone has access to the same drives.

Hi there,
I am using access a lot these days, and try to use keyboard shortcuts where possible (leave that mouse alone....), so does anyone know a way to get to the FILTER menu when viewing a form using the keyboard...i.e without having to right click on the field and then click in the FILTER FOR box.
In more detail, the form looks like a table, and I may want to filter on one field, then sub-filter on another etc.....
Then also a shortcut to REMOVE the filters would be good too.....
If I have to create buttons on the form with code behind that ok.
Thanks

I'm beginning to think it is a windows issue and not access issue. I have a couple of users that weren't able to click on the form shortcuts on thier desktop. They had been able to use them earlier in the day, but later double clicking them would not bring up Access. I had them use Window's explorer and try to click on the MDB file to bring up access, but that also didn't work. But launching Access directly, then open existing files, would open up the database for them.
Rebooting let them use the shortcuts.
Any idea what might cause this? They have been using the application for a couple of months without mishap until today.
Has anyone seen this behaviour before. If so, how did you fix it?
David

Ok this is a weird issue that has been troubling me, On some computers that I have, Access refuses to open databases through a shortcut. The only way to open any databases is to first open access the go to file open.
I've tried creating new shortcuts, as well as mapping a drive and making a shortcut from there...but nothing is working. Is there a setting that access has to preven this? The same database can be opened on different computer without a hitch....

I currently assign multiple 'skills' to departments using a listbox and a combo using the following code
Code:
Private Sub cmdSaveReq_Click()
Dim strSQL As String
Dim db As DAO.Database
Dim rs As DAO.Recordset
[Code]....
However as time goes on we may want to add new skills to the depts - ive used dcount to check if the data exists in one field before however how would it be possible to check to see if the data combination exists over deptid and skill

If expression to determine if a duplicate records has been entered.
DateAte is a date
MealType is a list box (text)
All I want to do is prevent two lunches, etc. from being entered on the same date. Code that results in the message box every time, regardless if a duplicate record or not.
Private Sub MealType_AfterUpdate()
Dim strDA As String
Dim DA As Date
DA = Me.DateAte.Value
strDA = "[DateAte]=" & "#" & DA & "#"
If DCount("[MealType]", "tblmeals", strDA) > 1 Then

I have a single text box with a vertical scroll bar being used as a user guide. The Locked property is set to Yes so no user input can be made.
How do I prevent the blinking cursor from appearing?

Been experimenting on some code to prevent deletion or changes to records that meet certain conditions.
The problem I am having is the code is contradicting each other preventing some of the records to be locked down.
Code:
Private Sub Form_Current()
'Code 1 - Prevent edits if 21 day period has lapsed
If TestDate2(Me.txtStartedHidden) > 0 Then
MsgBox "Editing NOT allowed - 21 day time period has been reached"
Me.txtBasic.Locked = True
[Code] ....
Rules are:
Edits allowed if invoice date not reached
Edits allowed if within 21 day but NOT if invoice date is reached
Edits prevented if invoiced date reached and if records still within 21 days
Edits prevented if invoiced date reached & records past 21 days

I've a Sub form as datasheet view/grid.
See Capture1 & Capture2.
I'd like to prevent for duplicate time/date for same GuideCode. How can i prevent for those during the entry time or save time ? Is it possible ?
Capture1.
Capture2.
1. AUNKZ(GuideCode) is already assigned in other file number(12345) for 03-Aug-14 (as 02-Aug-14 to 04-Aug-14).
2. TOD(GuideCode) is already assigned in same file number(23456) for 10-Aug-14, 12:00 PM (as 10-Aug-14 to 10-Aug-14, 8:00AM to 1:00PM). I'd like to prevent if the file number are same or not same.

I wrote a VBA code to get the field value of a csv file, then use it to update the database table. I paste some of my code below
Dim objConn As New ADODB.Connection
Dim objRs As New ADODB.Recordset
Dim objUpdate As ADODB.Connection
objConn.Open "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" & theFolderName & ";Extended Properties='text;HDR=Yes;FMT=Delimited'"
[Code] ....
1. The target of this code is to set the [Section] value in the table
2. The [Section] value is at the 3rd column inside the csv file
3. By using the UPDATE query, it map the [Section] value to the corresponding [Program] and [Course] in the table
This code did the job. But the problem is the string of the [Section] value is like "2-22-01". But after update to the table, the value become "2/22/2001".
The value is a string text, not date. How can I prevent this happen ?
I just attached 2 files, 1 mdb and 1 txt (change the extension to csv before test).

Nutshell: My user DB has one menu with 4 tabs (2 for adding records, and 2 for searching/editing records). Since the form opens up in the acFormAdd mode, Access already creates a new record (blank) before they type anything. It is resulting in blank false new records that are getting added to the table and they are getting annoying. My audit table is full of "user X created new record at this time" when it's just a blank record.
There must be a way to prevent this using VBA, but I cannot find it.
I've seen ways to disable "add new record" buttons and such, but nothing that disables Access from being smarter than me and creating a new record before I decide to.

i have a form that there is a list box inside that. after selection of items (usually 20 items) and right click the mouse on items it should open another pop up form,the problem is after right click selected items will be unselected except one item that there is mouse on that. how can i prevent list box from deselecting items after right click .
the code for mouse right click is like below:
Private Sub ItemList_MouseDown(Button As Integer, Shift As Integer, x As Single, y As Single)
Const RIGHTBUTTON = 2
Dim udtPos As POINTAPI
Dim frm As Access.Form
If Button = RIGHTBUTTON Then
Set mp = New [*clsMousePosition]
GetCursorPos udtPos
DoCmd.OpenForm "frmshortcut"
DoCmd.MoveSize udtPos.x * mp.TwipsPerPixelX, udtPos.y * mp.TwipsPerPixelY
Forms!frmshortcut!txtparameter = Me.ItemList.Value
End If
End Sub

I have some code which creates a record in an external csv file to provide information to upload a vehicle to the website. It works fine with the exception of creating duplicates when, for example an option to amend a record is given to the user before continuing to a new record. The option has to be in place in case there is an error in the specifics of what is important to be recorded in the database and under such circumstances the form code allows the user to tab through the form and correct any errors, but this creates duplicate entries in the csv file as the user has to pass through the 'SavePrintVehPurch_Exit' button a second time after corrections are made.
I am wondering if there is a way of altering the following code to effectively look look to see if the csv record exists and if so correct any changed field information rather than create a whole new record or create a new record where the record does not exist - The record in the csv file is determined by the 'Me.VP_VehRegMark.Value '.
Private Sub SavePrintVehPurch_Exit(Cancel As Integer)
Dim fileText As String
Dim fileName As String
Dim fileNumber As String
fileNumber = FreeFile
[Code] ....
I am wondering about introducing the something like the following ( but can't work out how to clarify comparison of the fields)
If Len(filename(fileText)) = ? Then
Do not change entry
Else
Overwrite the new detail

I've got this form called mainmenu and inside this form I've got this code to prevent it from being closed.
Code:
Private Sub Form_Unload(Cancel As Integer)
Cancel = True
End Sub
Now then, when I try to switch to design view in this form it doesn't let me because of this code. Is there anyway to tweak this code so that I can get into design view without having to keep disabling it?

I recently changed the code to a case statement which recoded a value into a new field
i.e.
Case = 1
Me.Field2 = 2
and so on...
However the old data would not reflect this change as the Me.Field2 value had already been created.
Short of opening each form, changing a number closing it and then changing it back to original value, it there any way to get the database to rerun all the code in the background essentially?

I have created a button to save changes and to undo changes on a form. However if the user has not made any changes, i get a message saying that the Undo command is not available and the same with save changes.
Therefore if no changes had been made i would like to just ignore that part of the action and continue with the rest of the event procedure.
My code for undo is..
Public Sub UndoChanges_Click()
DoCmd.DoMenuItem acFormBar, acEditMenu, acUndo, , acMenuVer70
Me.frmtabContact_Details.Enabled = False
Me.frmtabCustomer_AC.Enabled = False
Me.frmtabCustomer_Options.Enabled = False
Me.Edit_Contact.Visible = True
Me.Edit_Contact.SetFocus
Me.frmSave_Changes.Visible = False
End Sub

Does anybody know of a site where you can download/modify/use pre-made databases files?
I am looking to create a basic database to store survey details about signage on site for 200 sites.
Details i need to include are Site, Sign, and Components....
I think the database itself would be fairly standard, even if the fields needed tweaking
I don't want to invest the time into this if there is something I could use already out there

Hi guys,
Im fairly new to MS Access and have recently created a simple database to track the details of people in my department.
The database is on a shared drive and the idea was that when the details of the individual change, they open the database themselves and edit the appropiate field.
However, is it possible to track the changes that people make over a certain period (ie every month).
Thanking you in advance,
Jonny

I was editing one of my tables in datasheet view and when I closed the table, Access asked me if I wanted to save changes. But I didn't make any changes to the design of the table or the filters I had set up. I just edited the data within datasheet view. The reason this is bothering me is that I am afraid I accidentally changed something. The only explanation I have for why it asked me if I wanted to save changes, is that I used the "undo" command to cancel a typo that I made while editing in datasheet view. When I hit "undo", it fixed the typo, and scaled back up to the first record of the datasheet. At first I thought using the "undo" command might have been the culprit, but when I re-opened the table and used the "undo" command again, it undid the change, but it didn't scale back up to the first record of the datasheet, like it did the first time I used the command. Anyway, I am staying away from the undo command from now on. It's about worthless in Access anyway, because it only undoes your last action. Have any other Access users been asked to save changes when they know they haven't made any changes to the design of the table?

Hi, i am stumped.
I have two tables Tbl_Referrals and Tbl_CMSData. Both of these tables have an identifier in called ConflictID. I have created a query which selects the records from both tables where the conflict ID is the same.
I have a form running this query. Down one side of the form i have all the details from Tbl_CMSData and on the otherside of the Form i have the corresponding details from Tbl_Referrals. I need the user to be able to update field by field from Tbl_CMSData to TblReferrals. This is done by means of a simple update query for each field. This all works fine.
Problem - I need an undo button for each field. Me.Undo does not work becuase the changes have been made by a query and not on the form.
Is there a way of undoing what the query has updated? Possibly by setting the focus to a Tbl_Referrals and then undoing the changes?
Thanks in advance
