Modules & VBA :: Retrieving Single Value From SQL Server Table (DLookup)
Jan 30, 2014
Front end Access 2010, back-end SQL-server 2008 R2.
Normally I retrieve a certain value by Dlookup("myvalue", "mytable",...)
or
strSQL = "SELECT myvalue FROM mytable...;"
Set rs = CurrentDb.OpenRecordset(strSQL, 4)
But is there any faster way to retrieve a single value from an SQL-server table, beside doing doing the select by a stored procedure running through a pass through query, then open a recordset
Set rs = CurrentDb.OpenRecordset("mypassthroughquery")
just to retrieve ONE value?
I could not find something like DLookup("...) for an SQL-Server or in T-SQL.

i have 2 tables.. 1 with bookings and 1 with a BonusPeriod range.
in the Bookings table there is a field called [ServiceDate]
in the bonus table i have a field called [Period] which is text i also have 2 dates, [StartDate] And [EndDate] i need to Dlookup the Bonus table to return the value of the period table based on where the [ServiceDate] falls.
i dont want to use VBA (i really need it to work within a query that inserts it's data into another table)
i've tried everything but had no joy
Expr1: DLookUp("[Period]","BonusPeriods","[ServiceDate]" Between "#[StartDate]#" And "#[EndDate]#")
Expr1: DLookUp("[Period]","BonusPeriods","[Staff_BookingsAndQuotes_Master].[ServiceDate]" Between "#[StartDate]#" And "#[EndDate]#")
Expr1: DLookUp("[Period]","BonusPeriods","(FormatDateTime([ServiceDate]),"yyyy-mm-dd") Between (FormatDateTime([BonusPeriods]![StartDate]),"yyyy-mm-dd") and (FormatDateTime([BonusPeriods]![EndDate],"yyyy-mm-dd"))))

I have created a code below to test whether I can run a query and retrieve a data from an SQL server table. And so far I can return the result using a messagebox. but somehow I just don't know how to use this connection to update the table inside this access file. Basically I want to use this as a front end file. then when the form is open it will automatically update the table inside this access file and load the data to the combo box as a list.
Code:
Option Compare Database
Sub LocalServerConn_Test()
Set conn = New adodb.Connection
Set rst = New adodb.Recordset
[code]....

I am building a simplified re-order point system - if inventory position drops below a certain level (the yellow level is this case) one or more purchase order lines has to be created in another table.
I have one table with the following field and data:
ItemId Red Yellow Green Multiple Inventory position
0001 10 30 50 5 45
0002 5 40 47 5 23
0003 11 20 30 10 5
I would like to generate new records (in another table) based on the above fields and three records.Basically the end result should look as the following:
ItemId Qty Start inv Aggregated inventory Prioritization
0002 5 23 28 Yellow
0002 5 28 33 Yellow
0002 5 33 38 Yellow
0002 5 38 43 Green
0002 5 43 48 Green
0003 10 5 15 Red
0003 10 15 25 Yellow
0003 10 25 35 Green
The logic is quite simple - if inventory position is less than the yellow value new order lines should be created in multiple qty (based on the multiple field) until the aggregated value (in table 2) is above the green value.The priotization value should be based on the start inv (in tbl 2) compared to the values in red, yellow and green in tbl 1.

I'm pretty familiar with getting values from a table via Dlookup. What I want to do is almost the reverse if possible? I'm declaring a variable as follows:
Dim Ref as string
Ref = [lead_id]
This is from a form.What I'd like to be able to do is go to the table [list], reference the lead ID in the table via the variable then change the field [status] to "INCALL".Can this be done in a similar way to Dlookup?
UPDATE - here is the code I am trying to use
Dim ref As String
ref = [lead_id]
Dim MySQL As String
MySQL = "UPDATE vicidial_list SET"
MySQL = MySQL & "vicidial_list.status = 'INCALL' "
MySQL = MySQL & "WHERE (((vicidial_list.status)= Ref))"
DoCmd.RunSQL MySQL
Which gives me an update clause error

I set up an Access 2003 database where this code works OK:
Private Sub Street_Exit(Cancel As Integer)
Me.Suburb = DLookup("Suburb", "Streets", "StreetName = Forms![Add A New Member]!Street")
Me.StreetID = DLookup("ID", "Streets", "StreetName = Forms![Add A New Member]!Street")
Me.Postcode = DLookup("Postcode", "Streets", "StreetName = Forms![Add A New Member]!Street")
Me.Town = DLookup("Town", "Streets", "StreetName = Forms![Add A New Member]!Street")
End Sub
I've now migrated the tables to a back-end in Azure using ODBC to connect. The linked Streets table in my list displays as dbo_Streets but when I change the table name in my code I get an error.

I am trying to create a form with a button attached to each record that would allow the user to click the button and it would automatically open outlook and fill in the TO:, SUBJECT: and BODY: fields. Here is the code that I currently have:
Code:
Private Sub Command33_Click()
Dim strEmail As String
Dim strMsg As String
Dim oLook As Object
Dim oMail As Object
Set oLook = CreateObject("Outlook.Application")
Set oMail = oLook.CreateItem(0)
[code]...
There are two issues I keep running into:
1. This code opens outlook and populates all of the fields but pastes the email incorrectly. Instead of pasting just the email (email@email.com) it pastes the html tags as well (email@email.com#mailto:email@email.com#) which means that the user would have to delete everything between the #'s in order to send the email every time.
2. I currently have the email BODY pulling from a table but this obviously limits what I can do. I would like to simply encode the BODY within the VBA code. The setup I am looking for is:
one paragraph
a blank line
a hyperlink to a website
a blank line
another paragraph

I am using Access 2003. I would like to be able to open a versatile form that can open any selected table in data sheet form. Currently I am using Command Button with the names of the tables as the trigger. Looking for VBA that would change the form's Record Source to a selected table and add all the fields of that table to the form on open. I figured that I can use the OpenArgs to get the form Record Source to be assigned, but how do I assign all the fields of the table to be dropped into the form?

I am having an issue with DLookup, which, for some reason which I do not understand appears to missing the first record in the table.
What I am trying to do is to extract the e-mail address of all users who have 'Admin' status to the database. In the table ('LogIn') there are 3 users who have 'Admin' status and this is confirmed by the DCount function in the following code. There respective ID values in the table are 1, 49 and 51.
Yet when I run the Loop to get all e-mail addresses it misses ID 1 and just returns records for ID 49 and 51.
I have tried changing other users status to 'Admin' and it finds them but always misses the first record.
Here is the code I am using:-
LastIDRef = 0
strToEmail = Null
strMailToAddress = Null
AdminCount = DCount("[ID]", "[LogIn]", "[LogIn].[Security Level] = 'Admin'")
Do
strLinkCriteria = "[LogIn].[Security Level] = 'Admin' And [LogIn].[ID] > " & LastIDRef
[Code] ....

SQLStatement:="SELECT * FROM `tblNoonan`" & "", _

xxxxxx yyyyyy
xxxx yyyyyy
xxxxxxx yyyyyyy
xxxxxxx yyyyy
xxx yyyyyy

Is there a way to display the table in a single row separated by commas:

I would like to make a DLookup that check 2 criteria in two different columns in the same table. The reason to use a DLookup is that I would like to check if two parts already have been linked together. The user therefore selects two values in to different comboboxes (lstLinkPart and lstLinkToPart). In this case the value of the first combobox is column: ComponentPN in tblProductLinkComponent. For the second (lstLinkToPart) column ProductPN, in the same table, has to be checked.
If both values from the comboboxes match the values in both (and only) columns I don't want to continue and made a code to be executed.
I found multiple examples on the internet for using multiple criteria but something similar to what I require.

I Work for an NHS organization. A department here orders prescriptions and sends them out to Gp Surgeries. I have been tasked in designing a database to make this easier for them.
Prescriptions arrive on a Pallet. Each pallet has 100 Boxes of prescriptions on it. Each box Contains 2000 Individual prescriptions. I have a table which contains the following:
Box Number
Serial Start Number
Serial End Number
When the user enters the first box number and the serial start number, i need it to calculate the serial end number and insert another 99 rows into the table and also calculate the serial start and end numbers for these other 99 records.

I need some simple code that will copy an Excel file or a table in Access to a specific location on an FTP server. I would think this would be a very simple task, but I have yet to find any sample code that is *simple*. I have seen lots of code that requires downloading this dll or that mda, but the examples don't work. There must be something built into MS Access 2010 that will allow a file to be uploaded to an FTP site.
All the variables are known:
The FTP location (it never changes)
The FTP Username and Password (they never change)
The destination folder on the FTP site (it never changes)
The File type (it never changes)
The File name (available from the form in Access from which this will be executed)
I can either produce an output file, then copy it to the FTP site, or I can export the table directly to the FTP site with the file name for that day.
This seems to be a very simple task with no simple solution. Currently I am using an FTP app to get the file to the FTP site, but I would like to automate this. The process that creates the output file is already automated, so I would just like to add this to the existing code as its own module.
I'm looking for a simple command on the idea of:
DoCmd.FTPFile, acExel, TableName, FTPFilePath, FTPFileName, Username, Password, acUpload
just made all that above up and none of it is a real function/command in VBA, but is just the kind of thing I'm looking for.
I would think that since I can download and XML file from an FTP site that it should be child's play to upload a simple file to an FTP site, but I can't figure it out.

I have an Access Database that I will be using on a desktop. I have a table in this database that mirrors the structure of a table on a remote server in a SQL database. I have successfully created a vba function within the Access database that uses a server-side php subroutine to select records (I usually won't know how many) from the SQL database and return them to the access database. The code I use in the access vba subroutine to access the php subroutine is:
Code:
With CreateObject("Shell.Application").Windows
Set ieWindow = CreateObject("InternetExplorer.Application")
ieWindow.Visible = False
apiShowWindow ieWindow.hwnd, SW_MAXIMIZE
ieWindow.Navigate "Web address for server-side php file"
End With
The last command in my php subroutine is "return $retrievedData." $retrievedData is a multidimensional array containing data from 42 fields in multiple records (again, I usually won't know how many). I've checked the data in php so I know it has been stored correctly.how do I access the returned data within my access vba subroutine?
I should add that my overall reason for doing it this way is that I want to maintain my server-side database as an untouched master. Users can only add data to it. My client-side database is used to update the input table and further process the data. The subroutines described above are intended to retrieve "new" records only (i.e., records posted since the last access database update) from the server-side database and transfer them to the access database for further processing.

I have run into an issue with a basic DLookup. The database has grown in size and now we could have multiple entries, but I want it to return a certain one. So the information could be in it three times. Of course DLookup stops after the first one. How do I get it to loop to check the entire table? Someone mentioned to me to use a recordset, but how to write that as I have never used it before. Below is what I was using until this new request came up.
<code>
Private Sub txtloan1_AfterUpdate()
If IsNull(DLookup("[loan1]", _
"settlement", _
"[loan1]=""" & Me.txtloan1.Text & """ AND [status] = 'Open'")) = False Then
Cancel = True
MsgBox "Test", vbOKOnly, "Warning"
End If
End Sub
</code>
This was also executing after the user entered the information within a text field. I did not want them to enter all the data and then have it come back as a duplicate.

Continuing with production of my database I've come across another wall that I'm trying to pass. My aim is when the user press the "Quit" button it will export everything to a file which is stored on Google Drive as google drive is installed on the laptops that will be using this database.
However the problem is Google drive is stored in the computer user files i.e C:UsersstudentGoogle Drive - is there a way to retrieve the name of the user that is logged into windows?
Code:
Private Declare Function GetUserName Lib "advapi32.dll" Alias "GetUserNameA" _
(ByVal IpBuffer As String, nSize As Long) As Long
Private Declare Function GetComputerName Lib "kernel32" Alias "GetComputerNameA" _
(ByVal lpBuffer As String, nSize As Long) As Long
Function ThisUserName() As String
Dim LngBufLen As Long
Dim strUser As String
[code]....
However cant get this to work - I think that is probably because i'm declaring this code in the wrong place - I've tried declaring the private functions in a class module and the functions in a module - however no success - How do you set this code up? Or is there a new way to do this?

I wrote this module
Option Compare Database
Option Explicit
Public Function OdometerInput(varodometer As Variant) As Long
Dim varKilometres As Variant
varKilometres = varodometer * 1.609344
OdometerInput = CLng(varKilometres)
End Function
It works fine in the immediate window (although I haven't just fathomed what to do with null values and such) But my question which I am sure will be 'easy when you know' is how do I pass the variable to it from a text box on a form and retrieve the data in another text box on a form.

I have created an expense database but I now want to try to add fields to the main form which will allow the users to select their car engine capacity and the price they paid per litre to establish how much VAT can be reclaimed. A small extract from the table from customs & excise is set out as below (although the table headers have moved a bit). There are 5 engine capacity headers and numerous pence per litre rows.
Pence per litreUp to 1000cc1001 to 1500cc
75.08.5259.653
75.28.5509.682
75.58.5759.710
75.78.6009.738
75.98.6259.767
76.19.6509.795
So if someone had a car with the engine size between 1001 to 1500cc and had paid 75.7p per litre for their fuel we could reclaim VAT @ 9.738p per mile.
Is there anyway I can get access to look up this information for me?

Ans:
It would be nice if you could find out the formulae for working out the pence per mile bit based on the cc.
Either way, I think your table needs changing to this design
Price. . . . CC. . . . . . . . . . . . . VAT
75.0 . . . .1000. . . . . . . . . . . .8.525
75.0 . . . .1000 to 1500. . . . . . .9.653
etc
etc

Thanks,
Unfortunately I can't get hold of a formula. I'm still not sure how I would look up a value, even if I changed the table as you suggested. The user would need to select a cc size and then a price per litre which would then need to be cross referenced to give a value. I could set up different tables for each engine size, but then I'm not sure how I could point the answer at the correct table.
I don't even know if what I am trying to do is possible in access.
.................................................. .................................................. .
Sharon, you could have the price per litre in one ComboBox and the engine size in another. Both these would then be the criteria for a query.
Can you post your Db and I'll have a look for you, failing that I could knock one up (in Access97)
Col

I think I've attached the file, but I've never done this before so it might not be there!
The table I'm trying to create is called pence per litre but it is completely stand alone at the moment until I can work out how to get any information out of it. I have changed the table to your suggested layout but have only entered a few records, there are hundreds to be entered if it can be made to work!
Thanks
