Modules & VBA :: Split Data Within A Record Into Multiple Fields?
Sep 3, 2013
I have an access table that looks like the below:
"field1", "field2, field3, field4, field5, field6, field7"
"field1~field2~field3~field4~field5~field6~fie ld7"
"field1~field2~field3~field4~field5~field6~fie ld7"
"field1~field2~field3~field4~field5~field6~fie ld7"
"field1", "field2, field3, field4, field5, field6, field7"
"field1~field2~field3~field4~field5~field6~fie ld7"
I've got a module which loads the data into a table, but it can't handle the records that are ~ delimited, so spits them out as a single field.
I know there is some VBA code that can be used to split comma delimited records, and I've seen bits of it floating around online and tried to alter it to work for the ~, but I get the feeling that what I've seen is only a part of the required code, how to put it all together to make something that actually works.
So, what I need to do is;
- Split some records in a table out into multiple fields where there is a ~ present
- Place these newly split fields into a table (I don't mind if it ends up in a new table or not)

In a situation where I imported an excel file with so many columns and split them into two temp tables and they are linked using a key.
the data has a fixed part lets say
Field1....Field2.....Filed3.....Field4...then Field5.....Field6.....Field7....Field8 is the same data range as Field9...Field10...Field11...Field12. I would want to split this data into multiple rows like this
Field 1 Field2 Field3 Field4 Field5 Field6 Field7 Field8
Field 1 Field2 Field3 Field4 Field9 field10 field11 field12 and so own...
What is the best approach?

I have a split form with 10-15 fields. Each of these fields is a combo box. The trouble I am having is sorting the data in the datasheet of the split for. I want to sort ascending by "ProductTypeName", then ascending by "Parent SKU" and then ascending by "ProductSizeID".
How can I do this when each of my combo boxes have an ID and then a name? Example below:
ProductTypeID
ProductTypeName
1
Apron - Bib
2
Apron - Waist
3
Bag - Backpack
4
Chef Coat

I have a form bound to a table which has 20 (name)fields and 1 date per record. A user fills in this form first to indicate which people are present this day. I know it would be better to use 1 name per record but that would in this case not work since the form must show all names for that day before saving and closing.
I have a different form where I use 4 combo boxes and a date field. The values that can be selected in the combo boxes should come from the 20 names on the first form and with the same date as the other form. So only 4 people of the 20 indicated as present on that day can be selected to have performed some task.
I know how to select with a combo box from different records, but how would I do it from different fields in the same record? And then also for a particular date?

I have an access form that is used for cash-ups. The cash-ups are not done on a regular basis and the owner requested that the database look at the last cash-up date, current cash-up date and calculate the difference in days and then calculate the average take per day by dividing the total take for the period by the number of days from the last cash-up date to the current cash-up date. This was simple and is done however, what he now wants is to export this data to another table and have it split the total amount per record by the average number of days and reflect the average amount per day over as many lines.
Eg: R5,000.00 / 20 days = R250.00 per day.
This data needs to be displayed in TWENTY lines each with a value of R250.00.

I have a CSV file that the system is producing; it is one file with multiple sections in it eg...
Quote:
[Names]
001,"John Doe"
002,"Jane Doe"
003,"An Other"
[Address]
001,"63 Huntly Street","CRANMORE","BA4 7HA"
002,"52 Southern Way","NORTH QUEENSFERRY","KY11 3YZ"
003,"20 Scrimshire Lane","ASKETT","HP27 2AS"
[Orders]
001,"0001A","Screwdiver",1,8.99
001,"0001A","hammer",1,15
001,"0001A","no 3 screws",1,5
001,"0001A","drill",1,49.99
etc etc etc
The file is huge with many sections (eg Names, Address) in it. What I need to do is load it into Access for some analysis. Is there a way I can split the file one loading to the system into multiple tables?

I have a field in an Access 2003 table that has several image names in it separated by "; " (semi colon and space). The thing is, I need to split them up into their own fields..My table name is "ONE BIG TABLE" (will be exporting data from one table for CSV).My starting field name is "ALT_IMG".An example of the contents of a record within "ALT_IMG" is
Code:
/AAG70260G05_2_1.JPG; AAG70260G05_3_1.JPG; AAG70260G05_5_1.JPG; AAG70260G05_6_1.JPG; AAG70260G05_7_1.JPG; AAG70260G05_8_1.JPG; AAG70260G05_4_1.JPG
What I need is to split these up into their own fields. I can create new fields to populate, I just need to get them in the fields and to remove them from the original ALT_IMG field after moved. There can be as many as 0 or 1 to 20 images in the ALT_IMG field.
Ultimately I was thinking about making new fields named "ALT_IMG_2", "ALT_IMG_3" (up tp 20) and then making an update query of sort to anything more than 1 image to the next field. Meaning if there are two images, then the first stays where it is and the second is moved to ALT_IMG_2. If there are three then the first stays where it is, the second goes to ALT_IMG_2 and the third goes to ALT_IMG_3.Now I know that there are benefits of having multiple tables but I need this to end up in the same table.

I am trying to split a number sequence (Ex. 25372-400-E10-0000-D0021) Where the third number in the sequence can be either 2 or 3 numbers/letters.
The idea is to have a query that will split this number into its individual parts. I have seen several forums about splitting two numbers and such but I can't seem to make that work when I need to create 5 columns from this one field.

I need writing a function to split the image names. In essence, I need to create a separate record in a related image table. I have searched over and over again I can't seem to produce the results I need.
I would like to review the records in query so that I can add criteria before appending them.
BV-GB bv-gb.jpg
CSO-C sso-c, cso-c, eso-c.JPG
The number of images for each product varies as well.

My records are huge, with 2 memo fields. One memo field has the complete content of journal articles, so it's quite a lot of text. What I'd like to do is, per the title, split record data into 2 report pages each with the first page holding the summary field data and the second page holding the journal content only.
I've experimented with the page break functions, can grow / can shrink properties and some of the other things that would be relevant here but can never seem to get them to work.

I have designed a database which I intend to split for multi-users to access from one front end icon on a shared folder at work. I have designed a form bound to cmr record table and on it a subform to another table where cmrs activities will be saved. The form has buttons to and blank controls.
User can create a new activity entry by typing into the blank controls and pressing the save button which saves to the activity table. the edit button extracts a selected records details (selected on the subform) from the activity table and populates the blank field for a user to edit and then hit save to save changes. The delete button deletes a selected record from the activity table. I intend to have multi-users either accessing, viewing and a possibly editing the same customer at the same time. The simultaneous viewing is essential but the simultaneous editing, though not desired is inevitably going to occur.
What I would like to know is:
1. Can you lock an individual record in a table or does the whole table have to be locked. E.g If Colleague 1 is editing Cmr A's record in Table1 can he lock it so Colleague 2 can view and edit Cmr B's record in Table1
2.Can Colleague 1 access/read Cmr A's record in Table1 to retrieve details toe the form controls if Colleague 2 is viewing or editing Cmr A's record in Table1
3. If record lock is possible, how can I initiate it in my example code below.Edit activity record Code
Code:
Private Sub Edit_A_Click()
'Get Data to text box control
With Me.R_P_Data_P_Subfrm.Form
Me.txtrID = !rID
Me.txtrID.Tag = !rID
Me.txtrefNo = !refNo
Me.cmbrpc = !rPC
[code]....

Hi Folks,
I am attempting to split out a descriptive field so that each words which may exist in that particular field will be split out into seperate fields ... for example, if the violation field is populated with a four worded description of 'Assualt on Police Officer' I would like to somehow strip out the words so that 'Assualt' and 'on' and 'Police' and 'Officer' are all in seperate fields. I am not sure if this can be done using a simple query in access ... if anyone can offer any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you,
Joe

A small issue I was wondering of for a few day . Is it possible in SQL query to SELECT multiple fields from multiple tables ? Example for the question is
Code:
dim my_var as String
my_var = "SELECT Emp_FName , Emp_LName , Emp_Adress " _
& " FROM Table1 " _
& " AND Emp_Date_Of_Payment , Emp_Sum_Of_Payment " _
& "FROM Table2 " _
& " WHERE Emp_ID = 3 "
Is this code actually valid in SQL gramatics , and is it usable if passed to a Recordset variable ( rs = CurrentDB.OpenRecordset(my_var) ) ? Just FYI - The two tables are not related and I want to keep them that way (If possible relate their records just via SQL/Vba )

I have a database that will register the emails coming in and what time, also the time, date out and person.
I have a form with the fields to be filled in and a submit button. There are some fields that are automatically filled in and others need manually fill in.
below that part is a sheet (subform in the form of sheet) that should be filled in with the above data. Once it is there, it should empty the fields so they are ready to be filled in again. If I fill new data and press the submit button, it should go to the next available row.

Hi,
Not sure where to put this, but as I want the information to be shown in form view, I guess this is the bext place to start.
In breif, I have created a database, in which infomation on machinery is held.
The problem I am having (atm), is I have to create a function, which I want to be presented in form form, where by each item can be searched by it's RequestID (unique) or the customer who owns it, so that its current location can be attached (or viewed).
I'm not sure whether i've worded this well, so to sumerise:
I need a form with 3 fields, RequestID, Customer and Location.
Where by I input the RequestID, which brings up the Customer and Location, or input Customer which brings up the RequestID and Location (obviously there will be mulitple results from Customer search).
Again, I hope I haven't confused anyone because it's pretty simple what i'm trying to say, but....
Thanks, Ben

How do I update the FE?

Hello eveyone . . .
i am attempting to create a VERY complicated query . . . it's sort of confusing:
I recieve data from an outside source and it is up to us to format it for our own analysis . . .
i have fields:
MethodCode..... AccNo .....PatientName.....MR..... TestCode ..... etc, etc
The fields we want to focus on is "AccNo" and "TestCode"
Now i want to filter based on this condition:
If "AccNo" AND "TestCode" BOTH have duplicate data in a record. Show that record only once. Remember. . . "AccNo and TestCode, both these fields have to have duplicate data in a record.
Example:
MethodCode..... AccNo .....PatientName.....MR..... TestCode ..... etc, etc
CAPT.....M566679.....John Blue.....123456.....CBCA
CAPT.....M566679.....John Blue.....123456.....CBCA
the example above should only display once because of the repeated AccNo and TestCode
Example:
MethodCode..... AccNo .....PatientName.....MR..... TestCode ..... etc, etc
CAPT.....M566679.....John Blue.....123456..... CBCA
CAPT.....M566679.....John Blue.....123456..... LIPID
the example above is just fine because the TestCode is not matching
How do i create a query to accomplish this? someone please help, i've had troube with this for the passed couple weeks . .. .

In Access 2010, I have a table with two fields. The first field (Investor Name) contains several occurrences of the same text (i.e. Investor A occurs 2 times, Investor B occurs 3 times, etc.). The second field (Investment) may or may not contain duplicates (i.e. more than one Investor may have invested in the same Investment). I'm trying to create a query that will show me, in one record, all the Investments that each Investor has made.
So for the following data...
Investor Name
Investment
Investor A
Investment 1
Investor A
Investment 2
Investor B
Investment 1
Investor B
Investment 3
Investor B
Investment 4
I want the query to report back the following...
Investor Name
1st Investment
2nd Investment
3rd Investment
Investor A
Investment 1
Investment 2
Investor B
Investment 1
Investment 3
Investment 4
To clarify further, I'm NOT looking to concatenate the results into one field. Instead, I want each Investment to appear in its own field, so that I can pull each one into a report later. Ideally, there should be no limit to the number of Investments that each Investor has made, although practically speaking, it likely won't exceed 10 or so.

Using Access 2010
I'm an expert user in Excel and am trying to learn more about Access, so I relate many of the functions to what they are called in Excel. And what I'm trying to do right now is count the number of fields in a specific record where the value is a specific result (CountIf).
For example, I need to return the number of fields in a specific record where the value is "Meets Requirements". The specific record will be determined by the Name, Contact, and Email fields (which together comprise the Primary Key).
Is there a way to count the values in multiple fields that equal "Meets Requirements"?

automatically adding modified date/time to a record as it changes..I have a work log database for a team of people to keep track of workflow (documents in/out, stage in the workflow, owner of the record, etc.). I have a number of records that I want to automatically update a corresponding date/time field when it is changed. For example, one part of the workflow tracks a document through the approval of 5 different people. So I have a five records that are yes/no flags for approval and five records that are date/time for when it was approved. Right now my team is manually entering the five date/time stamps, but I'd like to have it automatically update when the check the "yes" box and update that field in the record.

I have a form with mandatory fields highlighted a different colour (yellow or blue). On the form are 3 tab pages with subforms which also have these fields.
I have added a checkbox named incomplete to each tab page and to the form. My intention is to try to write some code to look at each field on the page and if the non-white (ie mandatory) fields all have a value, then the incomplete on that page is changed to no. The code then checks the incomplete value for all 3 pages - if these are all no and the form's mandatory fields are also filled in, then this also becomes no.
When creating reports, I can then find out which records have not been completed and notify the relevant staff. Also if the data is incomplete, they don't want those records appearing in reports - so I can use the incomplete value from the form.
