MS Access 2003 Running On Vista Home Basic

hi there,

i'm thinking about upgrading my operating system from XP to Vista Home Basic, but curious if any users have have experianced any dramas running Access 2003 SP3 on the Vista platform? or shouldnt there be any mayjor problems.

I have a customer that did not read my recommended hardware specs and bought a Vista machine with Office 2007 preloaded on it.

My application uses a Access 2003 database and it is working fine in the Vista environment. The database utilizes Access security and has a database password.

My problem is that I can't see any data that has been entered! I have ran queries and opened the tables, but it is as if there is no data in the tables. However, my application can still read the data...this is a very weird problem! This is a tech support nightmare!

Has anyone had a similar problem?

Problem Running Access 2000 MDE On Vista

Hi there - hopefully someone can help me out, as we've got clients waiting on my response to this problem!!! :eek:

Anyway, my company produces an Access 2000 MDE which we ship with the Access 2000 runtime (just in case our clients don't have full Access installed)

We've had a number of calls saying that our app doesn't run on Vista, and the error provided points towards a reference problem. However, when I load the MDB on Vista using Access 2007, there are no reference issues.

Is this problem related to Access 2007 reference ("Microsoft Access 12.0 Object Library") somehow being used instead of the Access 2000 one? ("Microsoft Access 9.0 Object Library") - I am about to try uninstalling Access 2007 and running the app again to see if that helps...?

Any help greatly appreciated!

Vista And Access 2003 Reference Issue

I am using Access 2003 on a vista Business machine and i get an error:

'Function is not available in expressions in query expression Format([Period],"mmm-yy")'.

I also have other problems with functions in queries ie DateAdd etc.

Any solutions?

Vista, Ms Access & Windows Server 2003 Corruption?

In our company we use a windows 2003 server. Our database is ms access 2002. The back end of the db is situated in a directory on the primary HD of the server.
All our workstations use windows professional. The DB works great when inputting data from workstations using widows pro.

I use a vista (ultimate) laptop. It appears that when I enter data from my vista laptop at times it corrupts the backend of the db. None of the other workstations do this.
Is vista a problem here in this situation?

Access 2003 Running Very Slow

I have access 2003 installed on two different machines. One machine was built 6 months ago with the best hardware available. The other was an older slow IBM.

For some reason, I am experiencing what appears to be some serious time delay (talking in the range of seconds, sometimes tens of seconds) when building a report that has a subreport in it on the fast machine. Yet when I load the exact same database on the slow machine, the report opens instantly.

Any ideas? I'm lost.

Running Queries In Access 2003

Not sure what happens.

occassionally i will run queries that have run before,
the hourglass will turn on, then turn off, and access does nothing
visible, but tack manager says its running 90% cpu. . .

any ideas on what is happening or i am doing wrong?

From Work To Home Can't Open Access

Hi,

I had copied my MS Access database that I made from work and tried to open it from my home to work. And it said it is only Read_Only. Why is that? Can I change this from my home PC or Can I work with this only from work?

Another thing, then I tried to create another database and I could only do this by creating table from design view and entering data. But I was not able to create it using the table wizard. When I click on the table wizard, nothing happens.

My work's MS Access is 2000 professional version I think, and my home MS Access is 2000l.

Could someone give some advice???

Anyone Used Access 97 With Vista?

I've been perfectly happy with Access97 and WindowsXP.

But my laptop's circuitboards have deteriorated, and I need a new computer. I'm wondering what the real-world has to say about using Access 97 with Windows Vista. Does it run seemlessly? Please say yes.

I have an application which I've been improving since 1998. I tried a demo of Access 2007, and did not like the way my app interfaced with it, and I don't relish a whole lot of reworking. But I don't want to buy a laptop with an obsolete operating system.

Tell me you've used it and it's wonderful.

Access And Vista Problem

Hi, i have a problem with an access database, well 2 problems. first is i don't know much about databases. the second is at work we installed 3 computers in an office with windows vista o/s. they then had a company come in and install software for their business. They were using office 2000 access database on xp previously. The company installing their software copied the access 2000 database to the vista target machines, i believe they may have converted the database to access 2003 version when doing this. The problem is the database doesn't work and they have called us back in to sort out the problem. Well we installed service packs, fixes, patches etc and googled a lot but found no simlar problems or solutions, in short we are stumped. I think the database is compiled into an app or something with switchboard etc, which i think means i can't access it? anyway it opens up with a logon form to get into DB, i enter the username and password and click ok and it gives a message saying:

"the expression on click you entered as the event property setting produced the following error"

it goes on to say there may be problem with an "event,function or macro"

on vista with office 2003 it lists several possible causes which i havent access to right now.

i have now tried it on my own pc with xp pro and office 2007 and it basically gives the same message as above but the list of possible causes is reduced to this one:

"This error occurs when an event has failed to run because Microsoft Office Access cannot evaluate the location of the logic for the event. For example, if the OnOpen property of a form is set to =[Field], this error occurs because Access expects a macro or event name to run when the event is fired"

Can anyone explain or point me in the right direction of where to get a solution. I think this is something for a programmer to solve and possibly something that the original database programmers should be looking at rather than me. am i right?

Access Runtime On Vista

I created an Access Runtime Database Download on Windows XP. One of my clients downloaded the db to Windows Vista. The installation went fine and he was able to populate the database with no problem. However, now he needs to send me back the data and we cannot seem to access any data files. The backend.mdb file appears to be blank, even know the data appears on the front end. We have tried searching the computer to find any hidden files it might be saving the data to and there doesn't appear to be any. I have tried copying the entire folder containing both the frontend and the backend to a jump drive and looking at the data on a different computer and it appears to be blank. This doesn't seem to happen on any other OS. Since it is a runtime version of Access, I am not able to export any files or even view anything of administrative value within the DB. When I look at the backend.mdb in Explorer, the modified date is old, so it doesn't seem to be adding the data to the backend, even though it is theoretically linked to it. Does anyone know where this data might reside or of a workaround of how to extract this data???

Will Access 2000 run on Vista? I've heard that it will, but I would like to verify that before I purchase the upgrade. I currently use Access '97.

Also, does Access 2000 have to be "product activated" like the newer versions?

Access 2007: Wireless Network Problem On Vista

I found a somewhat related thread but thought I would post a new one just in case my problem happens to others who were 'forced' to "upgrade" to Windows Vista Home Basic when buying a new machine....

Okay, no more complaining, here's the issue:

I have a small (8 MB) Access 2007 database stored on a machine in the office which is running Windows Vista Home Premium. There are two other machines running Windows XP Home (SP2) that can connect to the Access 2007 database with no issues.

But on my Dell Inspiron Vista Home Basic machine, I cannot successfully open the database stored on the Home Premium machine. I CAN see this database, I can see other files and open/copy them, but I cannot open the database. I am attempting to do this using the wireless connection.

I tried running these two commands as the administrator (found on another forum) because I think this is more of a network problem rather than an Access 2007 problem specific to Windows Vista Home Basic


netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

But these two commands did nothing.

I should also point out that when this database is stored on an XP machine (one of the others in the office) the database opens just fine on this Vista Basic machine!

I'm confused and frustrated! Any help is very much appreciated.

Access 2002 Runtime Install Asking For Windows NT SP6 Installing On Vista RC2 5840

Hi everyone.

Have been testing installation of Office XP Developer Access 2002 runtime package created using the package wizard on a WinXP Pro SP2 machine, for installation on a Vista RC2 5840 machine.

After installing the latest necessary updates such as Office XP Developer SP1 among others which were essential to remove the Path/File error I had, A new error displayed itself as soon as the runtime install package launched.

Visual Basic 6.0 Setup Toolkit (Error Window Title Bar)

The Office System Pack cannot be installed on this system because it requires Windows NT Service Pack 6 or later.

I assume Windows NT SP6 has no relevance to Vista ???

Maybe some other update will help here. I have googled for hours to no avail.

I'm getting ready to deploy my database and I would like to Hide the "Home" tab and replace it with a custom tab with just the bare minimum of options. I have alreadyused the access options to hide the other tabs that re normally visible, but can't find how to hide the "Home" tab.

Can Access Do Some Basic Calculation ?

I just want it to deduct:
one numeric field from another - to get a miles travelled number ?
one currency figure from another - to get how much more/less fuel was used than last month ?

also to work out:
an average of 3 figures
to multiply one figure by another ?

Is this possible ?
How easy is it ?

This is because I want to move my Excel spreadsheets to Access so I can alalyse it better and create custom reports. But despite browsing Access for a while, I can't find the features I need, or anything in the help file to help me.

I've been using Access for a few years (Access 2000) and have created two custom databases from scratch.

Access To Visual Basic

Greetings to all the experts out there,

Here is something I wonder if it has already existed or been asked before, a program or an add-in feature that can compile an Access database (including forms, reports, tables...) to a stand-alone .exe application, just like Visual Basic does. The reason why I think it's doable is because in Access, we use VB codes anyway and it wouldn't need to be rocket-science for Access to do something like that or this would be an improvement for future versions.

There are plenty of advantages of going from an Access form to a stand-alone app, i.e. we wouldn't need codes to hide background and menu or status bar; we wouldn't need to disable mouse-scroll or prevent users to go back and accidentally delete past records; or we wouldn't need to worry about users seeing your terrific coding techniques and on and on.....Agree that all these can be done within Access but imagine how much time it'd save you from not doing all these things.

Help On Basic Access Database

ok I'm an accounting major and for one of my classes which is accounting information systems, they are making us design a database in access. Long story short, our teacher is horrible and is not teaching us access and continues to assume we know it and ignores us when we explain to her that access was never taught in our lower level classes. Our book also does not cover access to an extent that will help us with this project.

I have a small access assignment that requires we make a database for a small video rental store. The only things that need to be kept in mind are that the store has many customers, you stock over 2,500 different movies with most having multiple copies. All daily transactions need to be managed.

I have a relational database done.. I'm just asking if anyone feels like looking at it and pointing out some mistakes or areas that should be worked on or improved I would really appreciate it.. Thank You in advanced!

Basic Access Question - Sorry

To all in the forum,

I know this is probably Access 101 but I seem to have missed the lesson. I have the following in my database:

tblFAA
tblMANUFACTUREs
tblENGINEs
tblMODELS
linktblFAA/MODEL
qryFAA/MODELS
mainfFAA
subfFAA/MODELS
mainfEDIT_FAAMODELS

There exists a many to many relationship between tblMODELS and tblFAA becasue once this problem is understood the database will be expanded. On my mainfFAA form I have the subfFAA/MODELS form which is displaying the information correctly. I also have a command button which properly opens the mainfEDIT_FAAMODELS form. However, when I open the form via command button it does not display the models listed in the subfFAA/MODELS. I know I can use the wizards to make this work properly but would like to understand the underlying requirements the wizard is inputting to Access.

Furthermore, I want to be able to add models with the mainfEDIT_FAAMODELS and not with the subfFAA/MODELS. I want to do this without displaying the MODELID or the FAA APPROVAL ID fields due to the fact they are useless information. I am sure this can be done via SQL but haven't been able to troubleshoot the syntax correctly.

Lastly I want to filter the ENGINE and MODELS comboboxes in my mainfEDIT_FAAMODELS based on the MANUFACTURE combobox (cascading comboboxes). I know there are many threads regarding this subject but I cannot seem to adapt one of the solutions to work with this database and do not know why.

I am not a programming wiz so please be basic. I think the biggest obstical I am having now is the syntax for filtering, sql, etc. Thank you in advance for your help.

Basic Access Mistake

Due to me still trying to grasp the basics of access, I have what I call the "Command Centre" which is basically a form where our administrators verify all records placed and control them from here.

As different stages of each record requires Authorising/Further Authorising by other users, they will require to update the same records as displayed on the admin control from.

The problem I have is that when the administrators make a change to a record which prompts an authoriser to go into the db and authorise, if the admin users keeps their form open (which is what I want), I understand that it doesn't save changes to the record until they exit the form. Naturally this causes problems for the authoriser.

Is there a way of saving changes to records as they are made so other users can edit the records as see it up to date. I'm thinking along the lines some vb code to save on an action.

Hi everyone,

First off sorry for jumping in and asking questions on my first post. I have been searching the net templates and answers and while it has got me so far I still cant find specifics I'm stuck on and would appreciate any help.

I have an access design project to do for uni. To give you some background I've done some VBA programming in excel and have a good grasp of office and windows but haven't really used access before.

I have got Ms Access Inside out (bit over my head) and Ms Access Step by Step and have been working through their tutorials which have helped my understanding of access but dont arnt really specific enough to my project (or maybe i'm missing something)

The Brief is as follows:

"You have been instructed to design and develop and information system to capture students module choices for the business school. The system will run on MS Access and be supported by programs written in visual basic. Spec is as follows:

The system should be designed so that students can automatically select their options for semester 1 and 2 from a screen which will indicate to them whether they have broken any of the following constraints:
-> choose 30 credits in both first and second semester
-> business 2 cannot be selected unless Business 1 is
-> Programming 2 cannot be selected unless programming 1 is
-> Decision making and Data analysis share topics so students cant do both
-> Bus Finance and Corp Finance share topics so students cant do both

There is a table with 7 module options for each semester and their credit weight, either 10 or 20.
The outline is deliberately vague, 20% of marks will be for supplementary features that will enhance the systems functionality and usability.

Based on the examples I have worked through, I see it like a basic ordering system:

3 tables

Customers (Students)
Products (Modules)
Orders (Chosen Modules)

I need a database that will let me input customer information (that I can do)

Then allow me to Create an order for the customer Using a form that lists the products available from the products table

When Creating the order, with the form, rules need to be enforced to ensure the order is valid (ie certain products are not chosen together, the products value adds up to 30 for semester 1 and 2).

Once the order is complete a report is generated to show the products ordered (modules chosen)


Is this the right way to look at the database design?

I see the module choice form as having all the modules listed and tick boxes, however the only order forms I have managed to find have drop downs, any pointers here?

Am I right in thinking it would be VBA that will allow me to set and enforce the rules on module selection? If so any pointers on how?

Is there a way to get VBA to validate the inputs on the order form in real time, eg grey out one selection if another is selected, not allow more module to be ticked than 30 credits. I guess the code can be looped to do this? or is it easier to check the inputs after ok is pressed then give a warning box if its incorrect.

Again apologies for coming in on my first post and asking a torrent of probably basic questions, but I have tried my books and the net and would appreciate any guidance

Using Access Query In Visual Basic?

I have an access Query(named newSerial) :
SELECT TOP 1 (Productbase.Serialnumber+1) AS Expr1 FROM ProductBase
ORDER BY (Productbase.Serialnumber+1) DESC;

I want to access this new value. Its not a key since an autonumber may be any number. When I create a new product. How do I get this value inside a form?
It works fine when clicking on it. But if I use an unbound box I get 1 as result and not like 76067 which it should be. If I click the query in access it works fine and show 76067.
I tried:
outbox=Expr1
' gives null
'or
outbox=[newserial].[Expr1]
' which gives "Access cant find the field "|" refered to you in your expression"

What should I write? Whats the correct expression?
