New To Databases: I Need Some Advice

I'm creating a database that keeps track of printing jobs at a printing company... I started my project by drawing out how I want the databases to be configured.

I was going through a book that was made for access 2000, but I need to create this in access 97 because that's what the company has on their computers. One of the features in Access 2000 thats not in 97 is subdatasheets...

Basically, what I want to do is for each printing job, there can be a bunch of different tasks that need to be completed and billed for. For example, on one printing job, they need to design a logo, and then they need to print it out and send samples across the globe, and then they need to create a pdf, etc. This is going to be different for each job.

What I figured I would do is create a separate table to take care of all of the different tasks that are related to each job. This table would have the primary key of the job from the main table for each individual job, and then they would be related in a one (MAIN entry) to many (tasks) relationship.

Is this correct in how I want to do that? How will I do this inside a form, I want them to enter the information in table that expands as they put more tasks in?

This might be a very simple question, I just want to know if I'm going in the right direction.

MDE/Splitting Databases

Hello,

I have been reading a lot about splitting databases on this forum. I still have some questions.
1) Will the FE (Front End) still show the tables?
2) Will users still be able to edit the forms, reports, etc.?
3) Will my code be hidden
4) Will all the users have up to date data showing when they open the Database?
5) Can more than one person open and input data in the database at the same time?

I also want to make an MDE copy, do I split first or make the MDE and then split?

The whole point is the following: I want the people (maximum 10) that will be using this database to only be able to do enter and view data. They should be able to generate the reports but not create new reports. I only want ONE person to be able to edit the forms, code, and reports. How would I do this.

Read Only Databases

Forgive me if this is in the wrong forum, so MODS, do what you will.

I'll come out and admit it right now, I'm a newbie here and have just started using Access2003. I'm in a city government so I need other users to be able to view and access my database, BUT I don't want them to be able to edit or change things. I want to be the Owner/Administrator of the database and no one else. I want to be the only person that can make changes.

Is this possible in Access 2003? Can other users only open it in Read-Only format but when I open it, it's editable?

Any info would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

Network Authority To DB

Hello,

I have a database that located on a network. I have several child replicas that only certain persons can access. The main database, everyone has all rights to. The child only the person allowed to have access has rights to. We keep getting the message that the database is already in use, when a second persontries to get into the database. Does anyone have any suggestions that might help?

DLookup On A Network

I'm using a DLookup to show a calculated value in a field on a form:

=nz(DLookUp("OutstandingQty","qryremaininginvoiceamount2","[ODID] = " & Forms!frmOrders!sfrmOrderDetails!ODID),0)

I can't add it to the form's base query because when I do the query becomes un-updatable.

While I'm working on the form on my pc locally the field shows the correct value. However when I view it on my client's pc, where the data is on the server but everyone has a frontend, the field shows Error#.

Any ideas or is there a better way to show this calculated amount?

Distributed Databases

Hi,

I have an MS Access database on a server which acts as a back end, with about 30 users using the data. They each have a copy of the MS Access front end located on their PC's.

Every time I make a change to the front end, I have to redistribute the new version to each PC.

What I am wanting to do is put a single copy of the front end on the server, and adding a shortcut to this front end on everyone's PC's. This would allow me to make changes to the front end without having to redistribute to all users.

What I was wondering is, if I put a single copy of the Front end on the server and simply shortcut to that front end, will it cause any problems, or are there any issues that I should look out for?

Any help or advice much appreciated!

Linking Databases

I have a Form that refers to two Reports, both of which refer to two query's one for each. the whole lot(1 Form, 2 Reports, 2 Querys) is in one mdb file and the actual database is another mdb file. How do I get my objects to get their data from the main Data Base File? the 5 objects are acting as a small report making application.

Network Blip

Hi

I have created a management DB which basically shows a high level overview of our Call Logging system. This is basically a split DB (FE on users machine and BE on Network). In th FE there are also a couple of ODBC Linked tables from the main DB.

Everything is working fine with this but periodically there seems to be a Network Blip which causes numerous error messages 'object not set' and Disk or Network Error.

I appreciate that this is probably due to the Network experiencing a tiny blip but it kills my DB.

Is there any way to either automatically reconnect the DB or alternatively close the DB cleanly without all the error messages.

Any suggestions?

I have two pc,s hooked up as a workgroup network( no server) I have a database on one of the pc,s and when I open the database in the other pc it says that it is "read only". So I cant enter new records.

Access On A Network

For the past several years I have been designing and building Access databases. They are designed for small evironments to be used on one machine only.
I am now faced with a situation where my client would like to have his database placed on his network server so it can be accessed by several computers.
This is a little outside my area of expertise.
I have searched the forum but I keep coming up with references to front end and back end and other things I don't understand.
Can someone point me in the right direction to search for:
what should be on the netword and what should be in the computer.
what changes should I make to the database stand-alone vs. network.
what unexpected problems should I expect.

Or perhaps you could suggest a book I could buy to assist me.

Network Environ Help

Hi everyone

I have searched for help on this forum and all over for a while but cannot find the help i need.

I have a database stored in my user area on a schools network. Other users around the school access the database by clicking on a shortcut to it found on their start menu. The database is not split with a fe/be and usernames and passwords are not required to log on, they simply click the link.

I would like to know how I can find out which users have the database open at any given time? I have a piece of software that tells me the computer name but that is no use, I need the users name. Is there a way of pulling this from the network because each user must first log on to their computer using their name and password before they can access the database?

How To Merge Two Databases To One

I have a database with two tables, Buyer and Products, with one-to-many relationship. The key of Buyer is an autonumber ID, which is the foreign key to table Products.

The problem is that i have two copies of this database with different records (with ID starting from 1 to each one) and i want to merge the databases into one.

Any ideas how to do this without lose the connection of the records?

Best Way To Set Up A Network Connection

I have a small access database that my users keep open all day long. Access 2000.

I have one primary version of the DB on the network. No one uses it. I have another file on the network that has linked tables to the primary db. I copy a version of this DB to each workstation.

So each user has a full blown DB on their desktop with linked tables back to the main DB. Is this a good set up or are there any issues doing this? What is the best set up for multiple users across the network? Thanks.

and I want to have the two databases as one so that there will be a fourth tab on the cintact management database with the order form on? I want to be able to link the two so I can have all the customers details and orders together and print off reports. I really have not dealt with Access before so I really dont have a clue. Any help would be truly appreciated. I am sure it is easy but I just cant work out how to do it.

Security On A Network

I'm making a version of my dba using the upsizing wizard, then i'm packinging it to distribute it as a runtime version and save the data on sql server

But i'd like to be able to keep track of who is adding what to the database.
How can I check who added what data? from which station? how can I monitor things in that setting?

Also if 2 users open the same form I'd like to restrict the second user, and have a window poping up telling him/her "you cannot add data to this table until user#123 is done with that table" a little bit like quickbooks does.

Network Sharing

Hi Guys,

This might sound like a stupid question but I'm just trying to work through it in my head and I don't want to miss something, so a couple of new pairs of eyes might just clarify.

I've created a call monitoring database for a call centre and I have split this so that they have a front end and a back end as per someones instructions. They have done the normal thing in as much as just putting a shortcut on everyone's computer so that they are all trying to access the one front end instead of putting a copy of it on everyone's machine. I've got a feeling they are going to ask me to go in and put it right, so when they have put a copy on everyone's machine will that automatically link to the back end or do new links have to be made, if so how would I/they do this? - is it done from each computer?

I don't really know, I'm just assuming that's what needs to be done but I don't want to tell an IT team that what to do if it's not.

I've only ever set up a sharing database once before and that was built on the company network and I set it up on each computer in the department, but they weren't doing data entry it was only for interrogation purposes and it was a few years ago now so I'm rusty, but I do remember it took me a long time to do.

Merging Databases

Hello-

We are using an Access database for off-site data entry. We therefore have one master database we keep in the office and then a "template" version -which is identical to the master version except no records - we bring to each site, do the data entry and then merge that data back into the Master database.

Can anyone help suggest ways to make the data merging process more efficient. The database has approx 12 tables, so I dont' want to create an append query for each one every time. Is there a way to just "merge" two identical databases??

I have a db on a network drive and the performance is terrible, it runs fine on my local machine. How can I make it run better? The db is only 2 megs so I figured it would be ok, but since my forms have numerous queries within them, performance stinks.

Having A Big Problem With Databases

hi all!
i have recently been set a sort of project to do and i have to create a database that is for booking customers into a hair dressing salon, this is not for a real company, it is made up but i have to do it and i don't have a clue how :(
i need a customer form with all their data on, this can be random
a booking form that i can book the customers into different treatments
and this is the hard part i need a staff form and some how i need to know what days they work on so that it will come up on the booking form so that you can search for available days, its really hard and im really stuck, can anyone Please help :confused:
