Null Not Allowed, User Friendly Msgbox
Jul 27, 2005
I have a table field where Null is not allowed, how do I use a user freindly message to tell the user to add data to this field. When a user tries to leave the field Null (ie by tabbing out), they get a message, "tried to assign NUl value to vaiarble which is not variant datatype.
What I want to appear is more like "Please enter a name" or some other custom message.
Any ideas - I have tried before anfd aftyer update events and vaidation rule on the form field of Not Null, but the underlying message always appears first.

ok can someone please explain this to me..
i linked the booking to the driver using the ids through the bookingdrivertable.
the italic fields are the ones i have included in my Query called "bookingdriverquery"
bookingtable
booking id (autonumber)
date (date/time)
time (date/time)
drivertable
driver id (autonumber)
name (text)
bookingdrivertable
booking id (number)
driver id (number)
after doing this i created a form using the wizard, choosing all the fields from the "bookingdriverquery"
when i opened my form, i hid the booking id and driver id (as they are autonumbers anyway)
i then added a date.. a time.. and a driver name.. pressed save..
the booking table had 1 record, the driver table had one record.. and the bookingdrivertable had 1 record (both the ids)
this is the outcome i wanted..
i would however like to use the booking id and link it to another table in the same way.. a customer table for example (using booking id and customer id)
i had trouble however doing this.. because to duplicate this above method means that my user will have to re-enter the same booking details on another form.. and then the customer details..
how can i link all this together.. if someone wishes ask me a question and i will try to explain.. someone help me please.

Please Exuse the question I am about to ask. I am a bit rusty with Access and cant remember how to do the following. I have tried and tried to work it out and tried various help searches but cant get the answer I'm looking for.
What I need to do is create a data entry form, very simple! However I want the user to be prompted to enter a project name and number in order to find the project that i want the new data to be entered under. Then it will need to create a new record in that project ready for new data to be entered from the data entry form.
I hope it is clear what I need to do

Hi,
Im coming to the final stages of designing my database - its a Uni project. For extra marks it needs to be pretty user friendly.
One of the things I would like to do to my forms - I will use the following screenshot as an example - is remove the 'X' (Close) tab from the top right but I am unsure of how to do this exactly.
I would also like to remove the grey area around the form including the record navigation at the bottom.
Could someone point me in the right direction?

I searched google for sample databases and most forms are rather primitive... Currently there are some features to make more user-friendly forms that I have yet to find in excess:
1. Stop updating record automatically :
For some strange reason access auto-update the records the user change in a form. What I want is to only update records when the user press the "SAVE" button. This could allows better validation without forcing the user to remain trapped in an entry.
2. Better error messages
Instead of annoying pop-up telling the user that he made an error, I want something like an ErrorProvider Component that tells what error the user made with a small symbol (!) which provides the explanation of the error when you over the mouse on it.
3. Using different formats for different columns in a datasheet form
For some reason it is not possible to assign a special backcolor for some field that are locked to indicate they are locked if you use a datasheet form. This needlessly confuses users who hammer their keyboard trying to enter info in locked fields and have no feedback ( except maybe an incredibly annoying pop-up window ) to tell them not to enter data there.
4. Better excel-style features for datasheet forms :
Good way to annoy users : prevent a way to cut and paste multiple rows/columns of information in datasheet. If you try to paste more than one column at the same time it just doesn't work.
Also why is it impossible to make the title of field to take more than 1 row ? I mean it sure looks dumb to have
Number of tax report
1
2
3
4
Instead of
Number of
tax report
1
2
3
4

Ok, I am a noob at reports and did a search on this. My searching DID NOT HELP ME! I thought I would make that clear :D Maybe someone can tell me what to look at for this issue.
I need to take one report, allow the users to easily use a dropdown or listbox on a form to Sort and Group many fields of data. To recap: The user will click on name in the list and it will sort report by name. Also I need them to be able to select up to three sort criterias.
EX: Sort by Name then LastName then Company
Please guide me to the answer. Thanks.

Hi, all.
I have a "client/server" split Access 2003 database with an Interface file containing all the code/forms/queries and some system tables and also a Data Backend file, with all the data tables and table structure.
This is being deployed to multiple sites, each getting their own version of the backend, so sites will not be using the same backend between them all, rather multiple users in each site will all share that site's backend file.
Since users will deploy in different network locations, etc. they will have to re-link all tables. Is there a meaningful/user-friendly way of doing that without relying on user's knowledge of "Linked Table manager", etc.?
Thanks!

Hi all,
New to this, but found some helpful tips/code already that I've integrated into my project.
You may well be familar the issue tracker database available for download from Office Online, well I'm using this for a little project I'm running.
What I want to do is tie up a few snippets as follows:
1-On my form I have a button called "Close"
2-When I click the Close button I want to check two fields, "closure" and "fix" and ensure that they have content i.e. not null
3-If they have content then I want to alter the "Status" field of the displayed record from Open or Suspended to closed (these are the three options for this field)
4-If the "closure" and/or "fix" fields are empty then I want a msgbox to pop up promting the user to fill out the relevent field/s, otherwise mark the record as closed
So;
Click close button, check contents of two fields, pop up a message if either or both empty, enter details in empty field/s, click button again and as both fields are now complete, mark the records status field as closed.
I've got so far but can't quite tie it all together, is what I'm asking possible? What do you need from me to help answer the question?
Thanks very much for your help.

Okay, I have a unbound form with three combo boxes the selection of these three & then clicking of a filter button opens the relevant form showing records based on the selection. Great that bit working, no major feat.
Trouble is when I select three criterea in the combo boxes that no record(s)exist for and hit the filter button. A blank form appears not very friendly or appealing.
what I'm after is a simple, thats me all over by the way, of a message box appearing to tell the user no records where found.
Any ideas, starters for ten on this one?

I use filter Combo boxes in a lot of places so that users can filter records easily. (Not combo boxes for input).I have them labeled as filters but nonetheless users keep trying to input into them for some reason. How would I add a message box to it so that it states that 'this box is not for data entry etc'.

Hi Folks,
I am wondering if someone can help me determine someway to setup a microsoft access database that I have so that the user can do nothing at all besides using the input form that I created and that automatically opens and is maximized via the autoexec macro. The reason for this is because although the user does need to use the form to enter or edit data, I do not want the user to close out the form and start playing with the data table or queries outside of the form. Is there a way where if the user closes the form, it will re-open very quickly so that there is no way they can do anything but use the form ... or some method that anyone knows about that might work. I really appreciate any help I can get, because this is for a non-profit governmental agency and this is the final piece that I would like to impliment before roll out into production on Monday.
Thank you,
Joe

I'm trying to create a pdf report displaying records in a columns, with each record having its own hyperlink. Rather than displaying the actual hyperlink, which is quite long, I'd like to portray a friendly_field like in Excel (Hyperlink("Link"). Hyperlinkpart doesn't seem to do this.Is there a formula I can create in a query where I can reference each individual hyperlink but show it as a "friendly_field" such as "Link"?

Hello,
my problem looks so stupid, but I'm not able to solve it..
I've a form with two subforms in it and one of them is behaving in a strange way.
I open the form and type something in a text box in the form. Now I can type something else in a text box in the first subform but I'm not able to write anything in a textbox in subform n°2. It's textboxes (and also other controls like combo,...) look like they are not enabled (but they are enabled!!).
This subform has also got a Button, and it works (It deletes current record).
If I close the form and reopen it and I go straight to subform n°2, now I'm able to insert text in it's controls, but I'm not able to edit the controls in the main form and in subform n°1.
I hope my problem is clear
Please help!!

On my form I need to limit the number of employees that can be entered using OnCall as the criteria or use ExpName or Employee ID
If this criteria is NOT met then disable On Call. In other words if they try and enter a 5th employee then the field On Call/checkbox is disabled
name of field is OnCall and actual control is named On Call
I need this to fire on the OnCurrent Event for the form which is named frm_Employees_on_Call_What_Order
In other words, no more than 4 employees are allowed to be on call at the same time. The fields for the query the form is based on are:
All are form the Employees table
Employee ID Employee autonumber primary key
ExpName name of employee, includes first and last name
On Call Yes/No checkbox used for if a employee is on call or not
query used is named qry_On_Call

The database's core is 3 tables: a table for service trips that students can go on, students who may go on those trips, and a junction table linking the two in a many-to-many relationship. Data entry is done literally from the trip table with a +/- node allowing addition of students to the trip detail table.
About 6 months ago, the user's computer was replaced and their office suite was upgraded from 2003 to 2010. Since then, periodically they have called me to say that they are not being allowed to add students to trips. Checking and discovering that I, accessing the same database from another machine, am able to add students to trips;Compacting and Repairing the databse, which did NOT resolve the issue;Opening a brand new database and importing all the objects into it, which DID resolve the issue, temporarily.I just received an email today stating that it has just happened for the 4th time. I can repeat my above-mentioned fix which will probably resolve the issue - again - temporarily.

I have had a form working for ages. It has a main form and eight subforms at the bottom of the form. The main form can be edited in all fields.
I have taken a copy, modified the form added new fields to the main source table and updated the query that feeds the form.
Now (in the copy environment) it won't allow me to edit any of the fields. All of the form control properties are the same as the working model (in the live environment) I can run the query by itself and all is OK
There is obviously some little control that I have inadvertently changed and can't see it.

I have a Table with a short text field, field size: 20. The row source has been set up ie "Item 1", "Item 2", "Item 3", etc. Allow multiple values IS allowed.Once I drop a control on a form (list box) to represent the aforementioned field, I realize I can put a checkmark in many items. Why? I add up the total length of the items text at 40-50 characters, yet the field size is only 20. To check my sanity, I open the Table in Datasheet view and lo, I can see all the Items spelled out, in clear violation of field size constraints

How do I put an upper limit on the amount of time allowed in a date/time field?
For example - during a heart procedure a person is exposed to radiation, it will never be more than a total time of 10 minutes. I want to know how much, but I want data integrity so I don't want them to be able to enter more than 10 minutes.
