Populating Combobox Columns With SQL

Sep 10, 2006

I am trying to improve the performance (loading time) of my main form. The big tip seems to be use SQL in VBA to populate subforms and comboboxes when needed, rather than when the main form loads.

I have a combobox configured for 2 columns, bound column = 1 and column widths set at 2cm each. After a struggle, I have managed to get the combo box to populate with SQL, but only for the first column. My second column appears when I click the down arrow but there is no data showing.

How do I tell the SQL to place the 'Identifier' data in the second column of my combobox? :confused:

Here is the subroutine populates the combobox when the subform loads:
Private Sub Form_Load()
On Error GoTo ErrHandler
'================================================= ========================
'Populate cboEmployeeID with SQL when form loads
'This is done to reduce time taken to load parent form
'================================================= ========================

'Define the SQL text
Dim stSql As String
stSql = "Employee_ID, Identifier, Section_ID, Office_Phone_Ranking, Role FROM [tbl_Prj_Details]"
stSql = stSql & "WHERE (((tbl_Emp_Details.Section_ID)=2) AND ((tbl_Emp_Details.Role)='Technical'))"
stSql = stSql & " ORDER BY tbl_Emp_Details.Office_Phone_Ranking;"

'Populate combo box with SQL
With Me![cboEmployeeID]
.RowSource = stSql
.Requery
End With

ExitHere:
Exit Sub

ErrHandler:
MsgBox Err.Number & " - " & Err.Description & Chr(13) _
& Chr(13) & "Error in 'fsubPrjDet01EDT1': Err 003"
Resume ExitHere
End Sub

Any help/pointers gratefully received :) .

Automatically Populating Fields/columns

Dec 21, 2005

I have Two tables one table has a Master list of products (ProductMaster) with a Unique product code (ProductMaster.UQ_ID).
The second Table has Order data. The Second table (OrderTable) is where I will enter the product code (UQ_ID) which is the unique Identifier which is also in the ProductMaster. As soon as I enter the Prodt code in the OrderTable I should have all the related fields filled in from the Product Master.

Columns in The ProductMaster = Product_ID, Product_Manucaturer, Product_Weight, Product_Color, Product_Size

Columns in The OrderTable = Product_ID, Product_Manucaturer, Product_Weight, Product_Color, Product_Size, Order_Date, Ordered_By

The columns marked in red are the ones that will have to be automatically fetched from ProductMaster

The data in the second table should be populated from the ProductMaster as soon as I enter the Product_Code. The rest of the details Can be filled manually filled in.

Is it possible to do this with Access. I have tried different expressions in the Fields without much use. The Documentation from Microsoft is very weak. If someone knows a solution or where the documentation is, please help.

Thanks

Populating Combobox And Filter Question

Aug 17, 2006

I have three comboboxes on a form – Fabric, Degree, Color.
The row source type for each is Table/Query. The row source is a Select Distinct query. I’m using a query so the list will populate itself. The choices the user makes in the comboboxes are used to filter called forms.

Would there be a way to include the word “ALL” in a drop down list in addition to the data generated by my query. If the user chooses “ALL”, the called page will not be filtered on that particular choice. I just created a record with “ALL” in those particular fields. That seems to work, but I think there might be another way.

Thanks

Populating A Table With Value From Cell Above Across Multiple Columns

Sep 15, 2014

Doing Ctrl + ' will put in the value from the cell above it. But I want to do this across 4 columns. On one row, I am selecting across 4 columns and doing Ctrl + ' and only the first cell populates with the value above it.

Is there a way to get the 3 other columns to populate with the value of them (the values are different across all columns).

Populating Combobox With Sorted Table Data

Jul 10, 2006

I have a client table with a field called location. On a reports form that I have, I want to make a combobox for all of the locations, so it could show all the clients from a particular location and also it would reduce the errors due to someone spelling a place name wrong. I could set the source to the location field in the table, but that would show them all in the order they come out and there would be duplicates.

Any help would be cool. Cheers

Modules & VBA :: Run-time Error While Populating Over 256 Excel Columns

Jun 11, 2013

I'm writing to an excel file from two separate Access tables, for which I'm using two separate DAO.Recordsets in VBA.The first table has 190 columns, the second table has more than 66 columns, so more than 256 columns will be written to the excel file.So I'm not expecting any error due to any maximum of 256 columns, but still I'm getting an error while trying to populate the 257th excel-column:

Run-time error '1004': Application-defined or object-defined error.(The same VBA works fine when I use another table with less columns.)Even more strange: on another computer I did not get the error and I was able to populate more than 256 excel-columns.

Code:

Option Compare Database
Option Explicit
Dim xlApp As Excel.Application
Dim xlWkb As Excel.Workbook
Dim xlWks As Excel.Worksheet
Dim FileNameOut As String
Dim RowNr As Long
Dim ColNr As Long

[code]....

Queries :: Populating ComboBox Via Query With Conditional Criteria

Dec 23, 2014

I'm populating an unbound ComboBox with a Query via the QueryDesigner. The value of the Rowsource depends on the value of another ComboBox at the main Form.

After several hours of trial and error, I came to the solution showed at the attached image ("works"); my concern is.. why does my first approach does not work via the IIF clause? ("not work")...

Filling Multiple Columns In A Table From One Combobox?

Oct 22, 2014

I know how to have multiple columns fill a lookup in a combobox both from a table and a query. But I need to have the other fields that aren't saved by the combobox saved in the neighboring columns. So, my primary table is a master list of chemicals to be analyzed along with their respective registry numbers. I know what most of the programmers say about repetitive data being bad form etc. These names and registry numbers will NEVER change, so I'm not worried about a change causing problems later. I'm trying to build a separate tables that will have specific chemicals and the methods that they are analyzed under that effectively copy from the master list, but add their own quality control criteria. Further more, not all of my clients need all of the chemicals that are available for every method. It should be noted that not all chemicals are analyzed by the same methods and that some methods will have some of the same chemicals as others. I need the registry numbers because this is what the analysis software uses to uniquely identify each chemical and I need the name because names are easier for me. Long story short, I need both of these pieces together. It was suggested to have a macro copy the remaining columns from the dropbox in the table to the other columns in my table, but I'm not sure how to do this (I'm still very new to Access and my VB is very rusty). I understand how to do this for a form, but when client reporting lists become involved later on, this will make my database very bloated to have a form to populate each respective table.

General :: Hide / Show Columns Based On Combobox

Jan 28, 2014

I would like to know if the following is possible: I have a table, I have a form based on that table (datasheet view) and I would like for certain columns to visible or not based on the input on a Combobox (list of countries) that is based on another form.

I have searched on the web and I found that the following:

On a button based on the main menu form:

Code:
Private Sub Go_Click()
Dim stDocName As String
Dim stOpen As String
stOpen = Me!cboDest
stDocName = "Datasheet"
DoCmd.OpenForm stDocName, , , , , , stOpen

and then on the event "on open" of the form Datasheet I have inserted the following:

Code:
Private Sub Form_Open(Cancel As Integer)
Select Case OpenArgs
Case "USA"
Forms![Overflow]![Tasks].Visible = True
Forms![Overflow]![Constant Number (Min)].Visible = True

[Code] ....

I have done it as a test, but it appears that it does not work. It opens the forms, but it does not hide or show the columns based on the option, it brings all the columns.

Forms :: Displaying One Field In Combobox In Multiple Columns

Jul 17, 2013

I have a multiple select combobox which shows up in many forms- SubCategories. The user can pick from a list of 154 SubCategories.

Everything is working properly however it is difficult for the user to scroll through the entire list.

My question: Is there a way to represent this ONE field in multiple columns in the combobox?

I know how to add columns for multiple fields to my combobox, but this is one field.

Maybe there is a better way to represent the data... a subform would have the same issue.

Modules & VBA :: Union All Query - Transposing Columns To Rows With Variable Columns?

Aug 8, 2013

I was able to use the UNION ALL qry. But, when I have another file (like original2) that does NOT have all the columns listed in the UNION ALL qry, I get a Parameter value box asking for the missing columns when I run the qry.

Example:

original1IDDateGroupChristianJohnnySteve 18/5/2013A1528/5/2013B338/5/2013C2348/5/2013D2358/5/2013E5

original 2IDDateGroupChristianJohnny18/6/2013A212528/6/2013B2338/6/2013C2248/6/2013D22

The UNION ALL qry includes all the possible resources ( includes all the possible column fields Christan, Johnny, and Steve).

When I run the UNION ALL qry with the original2 file, An "Enter Parameter Value" box is displayed with the mssing column name "Steve".

Is there a way to Map the original2 table into a working table with all the columns, or use VBA code to construct the UNION ALL qry to only include the existing columns? My data has variable columns and I'm trying to avoid the parameter popups.

How Do I: Sum Of Selected Columns & Linking Columns

Oct 30, 2007

Currently I'm building tables and forms. My first table (called Clients) lists the details of fictional clients. My second table is for invoices.

In my invoices table, I wish to link the column for client reference (note: stored in the Clients table) to the column that precedes it. This column will list the clients’ names and is selected from a drop down list that is linked to the Clients table.

What I want to do (if its possible) is to have the respective client ref. automatically show up in the next cell once I've selected the client to whom the invoice relates?

Am I making sense? Is that possible? If so, how do I do it?

Secondly, how do I do a sum of selected columns for my “totals” column? Basically, I want to add the figures found in several cells that precede it?

Totalling Columns & Rows Into Columns

Mar 22, 2007

I'm affraid my confusing topic title is an indicator of how confused I am by this. I can't even understand the variables well enough to fully utilize Access Help or the Search function here...

What I have is a database hat has column headers that look something like this:
Customer_Name, Order_Date, Qty_Ord, Unit_Price, Total_Price

What I'm trying to get is a query output that will have

Customer_Name, Total Orders (in Dollars) for January, Total Orders (in Dollars) for February, Total Orders (in Dollars) for March, etc.

I've been able to set it up to SUM for one month, but not multiples.

I know I'm totally lame (for proof read any of my previous posts) but you guys totally bailed me out the other time I asked a lame question.

Thanks in advance!

Combobox Depends On Input Of Other Combobox

Feb 25, 2008

Hey all,

I've read some tutorials on this sort of thing, but I can't seem to piece it all together to achieve what I want.

I have a table Products that contains the fields Product, Size and Brand. I also have a form, frmProducts, that has a combobox linked to each of the fields in the Products table. I want to be able to select a product from the first combobox, tab to the Brand combobox and have only those brands associated with the product already selected.

This is how I think it should work:
1.ComboBox1 selects productA
2.ComboBox2 takes its options from a query that searches Products table for all instances of productA and displays all available brands. brandA is selected.
3.ComboBox3 get its options from another query that searches for all instances of productA that also have brandA and displays all available sizes.

What I'm having trouble with in particular is passing the data between queries. For example, I can't figure out how to tell the query to search for all instances of productA when its defined by the first combobox. Do I have to store it as a variable somewhere?

I hope I've been clear.

Self Populating Form

Jun 20, 2006

I am new to database and hope this is a simple problem.
I have a few thousand products each with their own code and description.

I would like to create a form that when I type in the code the description self populates in an adjoining box. I would like to enter at least fifteen codes and their descriptions per form.
Have tried related tables using forms and sub forms with child/parent link but any editing of code changes the information back on the table.
Tried parameter query but how can I get more than one code on a form at a time?
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.:confused:

Populating Fields

Mar 12, 2008

I am looking to populate fields of one form based on another table with about 100 records.

Information
Table Name: 1) StaticInfo
2) Data

Form Name: EntryForm (Based on the Data table)

I want to be able to select a value in a combo box in the EntryForm and have certain fields populated in that form based on the StaticInfo table.

Want to use all of the fields in StaticInfo to populate the same fields in Data. Historical data in the Data table needs to remain intact, meaning that if something is changed in the StaticInfo table, the historical records will remain unchanged in the Data table.

So, if I am able to select a department in a combo box in the EntryForm and have the fields populated in this form based on the StaticInfo table, will the records in the Data table change or not change if there are changes made to the fields in the StaticInfo table?

Also, could someone provide a method as to how I would go about populating these fields from table to form.

Populating Dates

Sep 19, 2006

I have two tables. One is a simple two column table with Short Date and the corresponding Day of Week. My second table is an employee schedule based on Day of week. I bring the two together by the "Day" variable to generate a schedule for a specific time period, but I also want it to return the days where there is no data.

For example, I have a schedule listing like this:

J SMITH MON 8:00 16:00
J SMITH TUE 8:00 16:00
J SMITH WED 8:00 16:00
J SMITH THU 8:00 16:00
J SMITH FRI 8:00 16:00

My result is this:

J SMITH 9/18 8:00 16:00
J SMITH 9/19 8:00 16:00
J SMITH 9/20 8:00 16:00
J SMITH 9/21 8:00 16:00
J SMITH 9/22 8:00 16:00

I want to see the following:

J SMITH 9/18 8:00 16:00
J SMITH 9/19 8:00 16:00
J SMITH 9/20 8:00 16:00
J SMITH 9/21 8:00 16:00
J SMITH 9/22 8:00 16:00
J SMITH 9/23
J SMITH 9/23

Is there any way that i can see this without manually entering the "Days Off" in the main table?
