Print Table Schema

Jun 27, 2005

Hello,

Is there a way to print the schema of a table right out of Access?? Basically I just want to print out all the field names, data types and descriptions. When looking at the table in design view MS Access 2000 does not give you the option to 'Print'.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Orphan Table In A Schema

Nov 3, 2005

Hello,

I have some questions about a schema design I am working on. After much trial, it appears to me that a particular table is not and probably does not need to be related to any other table in the schema. So my questions are:

1. Is it right or quite typical for schemas to have some tables which are orphan (i.e. unattached to any other tables)?

2. If tables can exist in isolation, then what are the primary purpose they provide? I have a suspicion that if fields from an orphan table are used in query etc, then the possibility of Cartesian joins will arise. If so, how does one take care of avoiding such a problem?

Thanks very much for the enlightenment.

VB6 / Access / Schema

Nov 8, 2005

Hi

I would like to add to my VB6 app the ability to build an array of what tables are in my Access database, and the fields that are in each of those tables.

I am working with this database using ADODB, but it doesn't give properties like Tables and Fields, for example.

I am happy to open this database some other way, grab this info, close that connection, and proceed using ADODB.

What do you think

Loop In A Schema?

Feb 6, 2006

I am very inexperienced in databases and I am currently attempting to design a database and there is one part of the schema where I am unsure how to proceed.

I need to model schools, pupils and teams. Schools have a number of pupils as do teams.

I rushed in with the following design but it just seems wrong to me. I don't know much about database design but I don't like the idea of having a kind of loop/triangle in the schema like this.

School(SchoolID, SchoolName, Postcode)
Pupil(PupilID, School, Team, Forename, Surname)
Team(TeamID, School, TeamName)

I was conscious of having a fan trap of a school has many teams and a school has many pupils.

Is this bad practice or is it fine?

Any guidance or related articles on this would be appreciated.

Upgrading Amended Db Schema Via Mde

Aug 22, 2007

We have added new columns to a table in our developer db. Now we need to get these columns into the client's system.

Their computer is running on Access runtime, so if we change our existing Access db into a Mde would it be possible to upgrade their database with the changes without corrupting any of the client's data? We're quite happy to overwrite the forms, queries etc. but what happens to the client's data? especially when we have made some changes to the database schema e.g added new columns to the table?

We'd be grateful for any help.

General :: Changing Naming Schema

May 28, 2013

I have taken over exisiting databases and the names for the tables,forms,queries,reports are not technically named correctly.. What would be the easiest way to rename everything accordingly:

tbl for table
qry for query
rpt for report
mcr for macro
bas for module
frm for form.

Of Course they have names but it is hard to tell when viewing a query for instance if you are looking at a table or a query.... in the SQL View.

Build Database Based On XML Schema?

May 16, 2012

I have a xml schema which defines all things necessary (tables, field names, relationships, etc) to build a database in access. The question is whether Access could decode xml schema and build the database (create all tables, fields and relationships) automatically by macro or something else. I have tried to load xml schema by using external data in Access. However Access can only recognize some tables, not everything.

Form Design Strategy On Schema With Many M-M Relationships

Nov 4, 2005

Hello,

I have a couple of elementar level questions on Form creation process and standards invloving a schema with several M-M relationships. I have a highly normalized design (thereby producing several junction tables). I have attached a picture of my schema to give an ideal of the schema I am talking about.

1. What is typcially the process of creating Forms on such a schema for the purpose of data-entry. Meaning, should there be several Forms (on the order of # of tables) or should there be a few that enables simulataneous data entry to many tables through one Form. What is typically the practise?

2. If there are 3 tables (A, B, C) so that A and C have a M-M relationship and B is a junction table that makes A &B and A & C have a 1 - M relationship, then how does one enter data for A, B, and C so that all the three get populated?

3. Can someone provide a copy or link to a sample database that has a similar normalized schema and Forms built into it that takes care of the data entry to the various tables?

Thank you very much for some light on this path.

Print Table Structure?

Oct 10, 2005

Hi all,

a simple question: is it possible to print out the table structure in Access? The information I'm interested to print on paper is FieldName, DataType, maybe Format, Required and Description (or Caption). I may be asking something silly here but I really didn't find "how to" (tried to search both Help and Google...)

Thanks in advance,

Forms :: DLookup To (print) Another Table's Value

Mar 29, 2013

I have two tables each containing fields Brand, Form, Area. Table 1 has some other information that needs to be gathered (data entry) and Table 2 is just a reference table for changes to these areas. This reference table has an additional field labeled area point value which is the value I want to "print".

The form is based off of Table 1 and has all of the fields I want the users to input. Stripped down, I have three combo boxes for the user to choose Brand, Form, and Area...I also have an unbound textbox control where I want the area point value to based off of the value of the three aforementioned boxes.. I believe this can be achieved with a lookup but I've never actually used a lookup in a control this complex before...

Print A List Of Table Field Names

Dec 20, 2005

Just a quickie- i hope. :rolleyes:

I am in the process of trying to merge two large databases. I have four tables that really should be one to work in the new DB. I just need to be able to print a list of fields in each table so that I can work on the new combined structure before making the changes. I know I can use the documenter but this produces a very comprehensive list which is much more than I need.
Is there anyway of producing a similar list without the detail, just showing the field names.

Thanks

Forms :: Table Locked When Trying To Print Single Report

Jul 9, 2013

I have a database that has all the employees in my company with basic information. I have a auto number set up for each person. I also have on my form a subform with information about the employee's history in the company. I have bin trying for the last couple weeks, to put a button on my form, that will open up the custom report I made for the one employee, in print preview mode. Everything I have tried gives me a error. The main error I get is The database engine could not lock the table "EmployeeT" because it is already in use by another person or process. If I open the report by itself, then I get all my employees. I am looking to just open a single report from the form I am currently looking at.

I have 2 tables. One Named EmployeeT with all the employees basic information. I have a auto number with the field name EmployeeID. The 2nd table is called IncidentT, which has its own auto number, and records all the problem/incidents with the employee. For example, lates, if the did not show up, or cancelled out of that day, etc. I have the 2 tables sharing the EmployeeID, sharing the relationship. My main form, has a lot of my information and a subform, Like i said. what I try I can get rid of that error.

The only way I got it to work without the error, is when I go into properties and change the Record Set Type to Snapshot on both the form and subform. But then I can't edit the form or subform anymore.

Reports :: Unbound Report - Print Preview OK But None Of Fields Print When Report Directly Send To Printer

May 25, 2013

I have an unbound form with an associated report. When the user hits the 'print' button on the form/screen, the report is launched in the background. In the On Load event of the report I populate the report fields from the forms field as so:

Code:
Me.txtAddrMainLine2 = "NAME " & UCase([Forms]![frm_OrderRx].[txtPatientName])

This works like a charm as long as I call the report in Print Preview mode (i.e. with acViewPreview). But if I send the report directly to the printer, none of the fields print.

I've read about using other report events to populate the fields (e.g., On Format and On Print) and also something about using TempVars to pass the data. But I haven't read anything that's clear and definitive about the full answer.

How To Print Hidden Form Using Visible Form Only - MS Access 1 Table And 2 Forms

Nov 24, 2014

I have a Lost/Found property database which we use to keep record of the lost/found property and it is working fine.

As per our organization's policy, we keep the item(s) for up to three months in which if it gets restored to the owner then fair enough otherwise after three months the item(s) can be claimed by the "Finder". But for this very purpose we issue the Finder with a "Claim Receipt" which he/she should bring in when claiming for the item(s) after three months period. Therefore, It's just the right time to upgrade the database to a more professional level.

The database has one table and two forms.

One form (LostFoundForm) is visible to the user in which they enter data, this form has two sections; Item(s) & Finder's details and the second section is about Restoring details.

However the second form (ClaimReceiptForm) is hidden to the users (for manual data entry) and has only one section which is exactly the same as the first form's first section, i.e., Item(s) & Finder's details. This second form takes the data automatically from the first form because the table behind them is same and fields are same (please see attachment). Up to here it's all working fine.

I would like to introduce a Checkbox or a CommandButton in the LostFoundForm which when we click should pull up a msgbox asking "Do you want to print the receipt for this item(s)?" with a Yes/No option. On clicking "No" it should, obviously, settle down but on clicking "Yes" it should print the "corresponding record" from the ClaimReceiptForm.

Print To PDF

Nov 10, 2005

I used to be able to create PDFs, automatically save them to a file,
and mail them out to people. This was on Access 97 with Windows NT.
We've changed to Windows XP and Access 2003. Doesn't work anymore.
Part of the problem is that the users have no access to the registry
and can only save files on the C: drive to their My Documents folder.
I found this code on the web, but it doesn't work either. The files
continue to print out of my printer instead of making a PDF. I put the
entire code at the bottom, but here is the part I'm calling:

Public Sub SaveReportAsPDF(strReportName As String, Optional strPath As String)

Dim strOldDefault As String
Dim strFilter As String

'Ask for the path if it is not provided
If Trim(strPath) = "" Then
strFilter = ahtAddFilterItem(strFilter, "Adobe PDF Files (*.pdf)", "*.pdf")
strPath = ahtCommonFileOpenSave( _
OpenFile:=False, _
Filter:=strFilter, _
flags:=ahtOFN_OVERWRITEPROMPT Or ahtOFN_READONLY)
End If

'remember old printer

'Distiller.FileToPDF strReportName
DoCmd.OpenReport strReportName

'put the old printer back to default
SetKeyValue "SoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionWindows", "Device", strOldDefault, REG_SZ

End Sub
