Queries :: Deleting Fields Within A Table
Sep 16, 2014Is it possible to create a query that will delete the fields within a table?

View RepliesI am trying to create a Delete query.
I am trying to delete a specific part from multiple BOMs in my database.
I have a table of the BOMs that I want to look in. I called this table PartTable. I also linked my database table SYSADM.REQUIREMENT which contains all the requirement parts for all of our BOMs.
So I am wanting to delete only part number 123XX from each of the BOMs in my PartTable.
I am able to select the records with:
Code:
SELECT SYSADM_REQUIREMENT.*
FROM SYSADM_REQUIREMENT INNER JOIN PartTable ON SYSADM_REQUIREMENT.WORKORDER_BASE_ID = PartTable.PART_ID
WHERE (((SYSADM_REQUIREMENT.WORKORDER_TYPE)="M") AND ((SYSADM_REQUIREMENT.WORKORDER_BASE_ID)=[PartTable].[PART_ID]) AND ((SYSADM_REQUIREMENT.WORKORDER_LOT_ID)="0") AND ((SYSADM_REQUIREMENT.PART_ID)="123XX"));
Now how do I delete these same records.
I am getting error saying I have to select a table to delete from....
In my Access2000 db, I have a table, on which many different queries are based. Many forms are based on those queries. I want to delete some redundant fields from the table. I tried deleting one, but I found I could no longer open any of the associated queries and forms. Is there a simple way to delete table fields so that it doesn't stop me from opening associated queries and forms? (There are hundreds of them, and I have a lot of table fields that I want to delete).
View 1 Replies View RelatedHi guys,
I have a question I've been trying to figure out with no luck. I have 2 fields, companyname and zip, these 2 fields may have duplicate values or they may be uniquei.e.
companyname zip
billybobs 68135
dilberts 68137
billybobs 68135
what I need to do is delete all of the duplicate records where both companyname and zip match. Is there a way I can do that with a query?
Any help is greatly appreciated
Thanks

I have a table that is basically a survey form. The same series of options was available for 35 questions, and the table used to have a text string written for each answer. Because of all the repetitive data, I created a second table that assigned a number value to each of the nine possible options in these 35 separate fields. What happened is that, instead of the same text strings repeated over and over (and taking up real estate), now each of the 35 columns had a single number in them.
Now comes the day of reckoning and TPTB want a query with the raw data and the original text strings back in instead of the numbers. I was thinking doing something along the lines of a DLookup, but I can't seem to make that work in a query correctly. Apart from calling the same table and linking it over and over to the different fields in the original data table (see photo for how insane that is).
I would like to achieve the following task described below:
Just for an example i have two tables = Table1 and Table2
Table1 contains following fields: ID , CusName, Price , Date_
Table2 Contains following fields: ID, CusName, Price, Date_
I would like to update Price and Date Field of Table 1 where Table 1 ID matching with Table 2 and Table 2 Date is maximum(most recent date).
I am trying to take the content of two fields from one table and dump them into the other table, I created an Append Query pulling up just the main table and appending to the destination table but it doesn't copy the info when I run it. I also pulled in both the tables (and yes they are joined) doing the same as above and still it doesn't do anything when I run it.

I have a cluttered database with too many 'no longer necessary' queries and tables.
Is there a way (other than deleting them one at a time) to delete multiple ones at once, as I can in My Documents, et cetera?

I bounced into a big problem with Access 2010 where I cannot seem to be able to remove duplicates from a table containing millions of entries midway through a series of queries.
The table is formed like this:
Date - Serial Number - Reading 1 - Reading 2 - Reading 3
30.7.2013 - 1122334455 - 12345 - 987654 - 654321
30.7.2013 - 1122334466 - 12345 - 987654 - 654321
29.7.2013 - 1122334455 - 12210 - 987654 - 643210
29.7.2013 - 1122334455 - 12210 - 987654 - 643210
29.7.2013 - 1122334466 - 12344 - 986013 - 453213
As you can see, there are some rows which contain exact duplicates and some are a bit different. I wish to remove those fields with exact duplicates and only the duplicated fields. Running "Find duplicates" in Access gives me about 250,000 rows with such data.
I've tried a few options already:
- I cannot use the date as primary key as there are several serial numbers. I cannot use serial numbers as primary key, because there are several dates. Using reading value as primary isn't an option either.
- Microsoft says I should mark all duplicate values with an x and then make a delete query to get rid of all the x-marked rows. For 250,000 duplicates, that's a bit too much manual 'x-ing'.
- If I do a delete query using the Find Duplicates query as a base, it removes all 250,000 entries from that table, instead of just the 125,000 which had a duplicate elsewhere in the table.
- If I make a query which identifies duplicate data and gives me just one row for each duplicate, the delete query still deletes both entries from the original table.
- I could make a new query which would have only unique values using Totals as criteria (for instance, using First for the Date-column). However, this still leaves the duplicate values in the original table. Note that this database is already 800 MB large and new data is imported once a week, for the next decade or so. I cannot have a table get duplicates every week and leave it there.
- If I make a macro which would create the unique values table first and then deletes the old table, what happens next week when I try to import new readings? I would need to make a new macro each time I try to import new data as the table names change. Or is there a way to first run the unique numbers out, then replace the original table with the new one? With a 800MB database, this would put me dangerously close to the 2GB size limit. I wouldn't be able to use this as a part of a macro, as the database would have to do Compact & Repair each time it deletes the original table, midway through a longer series of queries.
- Having duplicates removed from the original import isn't an option either, as it comes in as a overriding excel sheet for the past 3 months, once a week.
As you can see, it's quite a pickle getting the duplicates out of the original table. This is just a small part of a very long macro, which takes about 15 minutes to complete, but due to duplicates the database is getting way too large.
I have a list of objects (forms, queries, macros, reports the number varies but could be up to 100) that need to be deleted from several other databases (about 20).
I could do this by hand (go into each database and select and delete each object) but this is slow and error prone.
I could create a macro and import it into each database and then execute it (I know how to do this)
or (!!!!!!)
there should be some way to be in one database (HOME) and programatically (VBA) delete in the other database (OTHER).
I know how to
Dim db As Database
Set db = DBEngine.Workspaces(0).OpenDatabase("c:other.mdb")
What do I do next. I could use the db.execute command for tables (which I don't want to delete) but what about forms, queries, macros, and reports ???? I tried to modify the MsysObjects table but ran into permission problems.
Any Ideas
My Membership Database includes 3 fields in the main Table which I need to clear prior to the new subscription year, but on a selective basis. The fields are R/N for (Renewal or New), a subscription date and an amount field (Currency).
At the due date I need to clear all 3 fields except where N/R=N AND date >01/01/2014, when data in all 3 fields is to be retained.I have tried several SQL codings to achieve this but have been unsuccessful so far.
I have imported a large number of emails into a table tbl_requests.
I had intended to have unique file tbl_requests.date_opened unique, but have ended up with a lot of duplicate records (i.e. tbl_requests.date_opened is not unique !). How to delete any duplicates? I have 15,000 records...
I want to automate a find and replace process to standardize names in a table, using the value from one table to replace another. The code I have is not quite working.
Background:
- Table [Checking] field [Description] has the source text field that I like to change/standardize
- Table [Rename] field [Description] has the text string used to search the [Checking].[Description] values. The search should contain wildcard logic so e.g. a [Rename].[Description] value of "Mobil" would find a [Checking].[Description] value of "Mobil 123", or "Mobil 234", or "Mobil123456 AB".
- Table [Rename] field [NewDescription] is the new value used. If [NewDescription] = "Mobilx", then the "Mobil 123", or "Mobil 234", or "Mobil123456 AB" would all be changed to "Mobilx".
I have the following code which partially works:
UPDATE checking, rename SET [Checking].[Description] = [Rename].[NewDescription]
WHERE ((([Checking].[Description]) like "*" & [Rename].[Description] &"*") );
Problem is the original [Checking].[Description] value is not deleted in full so the replacement [Checking].[NewDescription] value is not correct.
e.g. "Mobil12345 AB" might be changed to "Mobilx AB" instead of "Mobilx" (some of the original string remains).
I am trying to calculate 5 fields within my table in a query, but for some reason some rows do not calculate as not all the fields contain a value (blank field), is there anyway that I could bypass this issue?
View 1 Replies View RelatedHi All!
I am relatively new to Access. But over the past few weeks I have developed a large Db. I have searched the Forum under almost every thing I can imagine and have tried to implement some of them.
What I need to do is delete the records in one table from another table. I tried using a delete query but simply get told I "You cannot delete from the specified tables." I have checked almost everywhere I can find to check and the tables are not in read only status and I built it.
I have also tried doing it from a module in VBA with the code:
DoCmd.RunSQL "DELETE tblNewHRoster.* FROM tblRosterwoNHires.*" & _
"WHERE tblRosterwoNHires.[Rep_Name] = tblNewHRoster.[Rep_Name]"
On this I get told there is an "Syntax Error in Query. Incomplete Query Clause."
Can any one help? As you can probably tell I need a lot of it.
I'm having problems with an Update query. I have data coming in on one file that I am loading to a temp table that I want to update on another table in my database. The problem is that when I run my update query, it is wiping out everything that DOESN'T match. I have 5 fields that MUST be equal before the update can occur. I'm trying to update 3 fields in my "master" table.
Here is my SQL:
UPDATE NPPDcopy LEFT JOIN tempNPPD ON (NPPDcopy.Hour_Ending = tempNPPD.Hour_Ending) AND (NPPDcopy.TieLineName = tempNPPD.TieLineName) AND (NPPDcopy.AdjBalancingAuthority = tempNPPD.AdjBalancingAuthority) AND (NPPDcopy.BalancingAuthority = tempNPPD.BalancingAuthority) AND (NPPDcopy.OperatingDay = tempNPPD.OperatingDay) SET NPPDcopy.Import = [tempNPPD].[Import], NPPDcopy.Export = [tempNPPD].[Export], NPPDcopy.Net = [tempNPPD].[Net];
i have a form with a control for "repair type" and a subform that has a query that searches a table holding vehicle repair records. on the form the user can enter up to 5 repair types, [repair1], [repair2], etc.. Then the control on the form holds each type of repair to search by. Since the user could use one or all five repair fields and put repair types likes brakes in field one on one record and field 5 on another record, how do i search to just pull out those records that have the specified search criteria?
If i put in [form]![control] in each of the 5 criteria in the query it comes back with no records, because it it looking for that type in every repair field rather than once between the five fields?
I am developing a Make Table Query from 2 tables, one of which has an "Employee Name" field (lastname, firstname) and the other table has separate fields for LastName and FirstName. I've been able to accomplish almost what I need by:
WHERE ((([Table 1].[EMPLOYEE NAME]) Like [Table 2].[LAST NAME] & "*"));
Which works fine except when there are 2 employees having the same last name, then it generates duplicates. I suspect there must be a way to do this by incorporating the first name field in the sql statement but that's beyond my ability. I realize that names are not good things to base a query on, but the 2 existing tables have been preset and populated by others and I don't really have the capability to change them.
I have a table with multiple fields and each record in the table may not have data for all fields. I need to write a query that will pull only the fields that are populated for each record from the table.

Hello.
I am using a large database, which usually works fine, and is set to compact on close.
Occasionally it has been losing a lot of data in the main table, probably when it compacts, down to a round number of records. This time it left me with 10,000 records exactly. (It has been different round numbers before)
Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing this?
Thanks.
Hi,
I wonder if any of you could help me with what I assume to be a simple request, but one I've stuggled to find an answer to in the 'help' searches that I've done.
I'm working with an Access 2003 database that was originally designed to use a copy of a live table held elsewhere (this copy only used a subset of the fields from the main table). I now need to change the database so that it references the live table only, to ensure data integrity. To do this, I want to remove the 'copy table' and make all forms, queries, reports, macros etc. refer to the live table instead.
Is there a 'where used' procedure that I can run to find all the objects that use this table, rather than my having to go through every single one and check if this table is referenced (there are hundreds of such objects in this database)?
Thanks for your time,
Hi,

I have a table to which items must be added and others must be removed. Items in the table must be numbered consecutively At present I switch from the table to a query and manually reset the reqirements in the criteria section for each alteration. Can I set up a Query, Update query or something similar so the when I add or delete an Item the numbers field automatically renumbers the rest of the field. If this is understood. Thanks to anyone who can help.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a simple form with a subform on it (see enclosed Access 2000 Database). I'm trying to add/change/delete records from table: Component Name. Adding and changing records is not a problem but deleting is. It only deletes the value of the field "Interative Component Name" and not the entire record. I have my joins defined properly on the tables. What am I missing? I wish this Access stuff was easier to learn. Any help/clues would be greatly appreciated.

Hello:
I have created a form to record addresses, phone numbers and other information. How do I go about creating a DELETE button that when pressed, deletes ALL records from the table.
Many thanks in advance and for those of you who celebrate Thanksgiving, have a Happy Thanksgiving!
