Queries :: Query Stops Working With InStr Null Value

Feb 7, 2015

I have a question about errors on null value.I have made a small database for tryout, it has to be implemented in another one.And the small database is working.I have one table where there is one field called BatchInput.I scan a barcode into it and let two query's breaking it apart. I scan this batch into the table field

BatchInput: 20 MAY 2004H149-082-79 A4147011A05

Then I have my first query (Qrybreak1) extracting the date and deleting H14

Date: Left([BatchInput];11)
PartCertNr: Right([BatchInput];Len([BatchInput])-14)

The result is this:

Field date: 20 MAY 2004
Field PartCertNr: 9-082-79 A4147011A05

The second query (Qrybreak2) I look for the first space:

space: InStr([PartCertNr];" ")

Then with the result I cut it into two pieces

PartNumber: Trim(Left([PartCertNr];[space]-1))
CertNumber: Trim(Right([PartCertNr];[space]+2))

[code]...

And query (QryResult) even wont start, giving a popup with Invalid procedure call..How could I handle Null on the part where there is no space after the partnumber (missing Certnumber)?

Query Suddenly Stops Working

Oct 19, 2004

I have written a very simple query which get's it's criteria from a form I also created, which couldn't be any simpler itself. The form simply has a text box that I enter a value into, in this case, the date in a specific format "20041019". The query then pulls all records according to the form value. This query has always worked fine for weeks now. Today, suddenly it would not return any records. If I go into the SQL and manually enter "20041019" it will pull the appropriate records. It will NOT function when relying on the form value though. This has happened to me in the past, of course I did not document what I did to overcome the obstacle though. I have tried matchign the formats of the field in the table to the text box in the form so that they are both general numbers with 0 decimal places, originally they were both text format and it worked. I can't seem to figure out why this would happen. If anyone has any suggestions, I would GREATLY appreciate it.

Thanks,

Tre

Queries :: Multi-field Query Not Working When Some Fields Are Null Value

May 22, 2013

Access 2010. I've had to learn it at work because our DBA was let go and I was the only one willing to give it a go. Read a book or two and picked up some stuff on the internet.

Here's my problem:
I have a simple table -Employee with 4 fields. FirstName, LastName, Office and JobTitle. I have form called Form1 that has 3 control fields cboJobTitle (a combo box that is populated by a query that finds all the unique values of that field in the Employee table), cboOffice (same as above) and txtName (a text box to allow user input) that are used as the criteria for a multi-field query triggered by a button at the bottom of the form. The idea being that you could do a search using this form to find all the employees in one office or all the accountants in one office, or any other combination.

The main search query has the following criteria for each field -
Like [forms]![Form1]![cboOffice] & "*"
Like [forms]![Form1]![cboJobTitle] & "*"
Like [forms]![Form1]![txtName] & "*"

It works great...until I enter a record where one of those fields may be null, such as if I leave the JobTitle blank.
If I have two employees in an office in one city and then do a search for all the employees in that office, it only returns one record and ignores the one that has the null value in the JobTitle field.

Module Code Stops Working

Nov 17, 2006

just wondering why randomly certain modules in the form code stop working..

when you accidentally press return.. or do something in the wrong order.. or apply one rule to one control.. and then another control rule stops working..

so you have to delete the code.. right click on the control's event.. and re-insert the code into the event section.. and then it works..

why?

Access 2013 Stops Working With Recordset

Jan 6, 2015

I have a database with a table and 2 forms.One form (frmList) is a list of all records in the database, and the other form (frmInput) displays fields for a single record.There is a button in frmList which runs the following script. The user clicks a record in frmList, clicks the button, and the selected record opens in frmInput. ID is a text field containing digits and an alpha that is in both frmList and frmInput.

Code:
Private Sub Command9_Click()
Dim ID As String
strCriteria = "ID = '" & Me.ID.Value & "'"
DoCmd.OpenForm "frmInput", acNormal
Form_frmInput.Recordset.FindFirst strCriteria
End Sub

This script works as expected in Access 2010. However we recently upgraded to Access 2013 and since then, this script causes Access to crash ("Access has stopped working..." dialog appears).I have stepped through the script and the line causing the crash is

Code:
Form_frmInput.Recordset.FindFirst strCriteria

I can't find any problems with syntax or anything about Recordset.Findfirst being deprecated in 2013 so I suspected some kind of file corruption. To resolve this I have tried: Compacting and repairing the databaseDecompiling and recompiling the VBA modulesCreating a fresh database and copying all the objects into it

could this be due to a missing library or something? Are there other methods of resolving a corrupt database if that is the problem? Or as a last resort is there an alternative method to Recordset.FindFirst that I can use to open a form to a particular record while retaining the ability to navigate through other records?

Queries :: Instr Function In Select Query

Jun 21, 2013

I need to select the second word from a product description. Here are two examples;

2156015 Dunlop SP-30
1756514 Goodyear Sport

I found the correct code on another website to do this in Excel;

=MID([field], FIND(" ",[field],1)+1, FIND(" ",[field],FIND(" ",[field],1)+1)-(FIND(" ",[field],FIND(" ",[field],1))))

It works a treat. In order for it to work in Access you apparently change FIND to Instr.

Now this worked for the person on the other forum but when I try it, it doesn't and I get the #Error returned.

Here is what I am using. Description is obviously the field I am selecting from;

TEST: Mid([Description],InStr(" ",[Description],1)+1,InStr(" ",[Description],InStr(" ",[Description],1)+1)-(InStr(" ",[Description],InStr(" ",[Description],1))))

Queries :: Query With Instr Returns Unexpected Results

Aug 26, 2014

I have Access 2010. If I run this query

Code:
SELECT Reference,
InStr(1,FunctionThatReturnsLongString(), ResponsiblePerson) As MyField
FROM MyTable
WHERE
(Reference ='ShouldBeOut'
OR
Reference = 'ShouldBeIn1'
OR
Reference = 'ShouldBeIn2')

It returns 3 rows, with values in MyField of 0, 23 and 355.

Now I add 1 more where clause to filter on MyField and the query looks like this:

Code:
SELECT Reference,
InStr(1,FunctionThatReturnsLongString(), ResponsiblePerson) As MyField
FROM MyTable
WHERE
(Reference ='ShouldBeOut'
OR
Reference = 'ShouldBeIn1'
OR
Reference = 'ShouldBeIn2')
AND
(
InStr(1,FunctionThatReturnsLongString(), ResponsiblePerson) > 0
)

So, you would think that it should return 2 values (ShouldBeIn1 and 2), but it doesn't. It only return the value where the Instr returns value of 23. The one with the value of 355 also disappears. Why would that be? Surely Instr does not return a byte?

Zero Count Query Working With Null

Dec 15, 2004

I have a database that I maintain the history of our football league in. What I am trying to do is count each team and the number of wins in each year

The query works fine except in the cases where the team had ZERO wins. Then of course it returns nothing and screws up the other queries when there is a hole for a year.

2 Tables in the database

INFORMATION
TEAM
YEAR
(other fields not relevant)

SCORES
TEAM
YEAR
RESULT (either WIN, LOSS or TIE)
(other fields not relevant)

I want to count the number of wins and return it to this query EVEN IF THE NUMBER OF WINS IS ZERO (0).

When I run the query I receive

The query returns this:
2000 Westside 6
2001 Westside 3
2003 Westside 1
2004 Westside 3

In 2002 Westside was 0 wins -11 losses and the query not finding any WINS in 2002 did not return a record.

How do you get the query to show
2002 Westside 0

==========================
Current SQL Query
SELECT Information.Year, Information.Team, Count(Scores.Result) AS CountOfResult, Scores.Result
FROM Scores INNER JOIN Information ON (Scores.Year = Information.Year) AND (Scores.Team = Information.Team)
GROUP BY Information.Year, Information.Team, Scores.Result
HAVING (((Information.Year)>2000));

Tables :: Append Query Not Working / Null Values?

Sep 24, 2014

I have an append query created to add files to a table from an imported excel file. The table to which I am appending (SubTBL) has a field names Observation. This field is not required. There is a relationship to another table (ObservationTBL) which has 3 records. The information I am trying to append includes 7000 records, about 4000 have observations assigned and they match the information in the ObservationTBL. The remaining 3000 have blank records for observation. When I run the append query, only those with observations are appended. The rest are not added because of "key violations". I removed the relationship between the ObservationTBL and the SubTBL and the append query runs. Then when I try to re-do the relationship it fails "Violates referential integrity rules".To be clear:

1. The records without an observation are blank. (There are other fields in this append that have blank fields also and they are not causing any problems)
2. The field observation is NOT set to required.

Is it not allowing Null records?

Having Probles With Instr In My Query

Mar 6, 2008

I need to be able to take a list of instructions like this one, that is in a table, and have it break out in a query so that when I go to use it in a report it will look like the second example.

1) Set the oil out so that it is at room temperature. 2) Mix the oil and the alcohol together. 3) Place oil mixture on stove and bring it up to73 degrees. 4) Pour the mixture through a cheese cloth. 5) Add 1 cup

1) Set the oil out so that it is at room temperature.
2) Mix the oil and the alcohol together.
3) Place oil mixture on stove and bring it up to73 degrees.
4) Pour the mixture through a cheese cloth.
5) Add 1 cup

I have tried different ways of using instr in my query. I can get it to start the next line at any point, but I do not seem to be able to get it to stop when it comes to the next instruction. As a result I get something like this.

3) Place oil mixture on stove and bring it up to73 degrees. 4) Pour the mixture through a cheese cloth. 5) Add 1 cup

Update Query InStr Function

Sep 27, 2007

I am having a bit of a problem with my update query. i have a field that shows a forename. i am importing data from an excel file. The forename populates with forename and middle names and they are seperated by spaces as opposed to commas. I have used the following InStr function in my update query however it works fine when the records forename field has a middle name but it deletes all data in the records forename field if it contains only one name which many do. How can I adjust the function to ignore those records that do not hold more than one name in the forename field. As you can imagine some forename and middle name combinations hold many names.
For instance the filad may have Ivor as a name which I would want to keep But if the Field showed Ivor Bigun then Bigun needs deleting.

Left([Forename],InStr([Forename]," "))

Is Null Not Working, But Does Work If Change To <1?

Oct 5, 2007

I have a query, and it has been working just fine, till today. I have it based on a field being null. This field shows null in the table, it is a text field but it is a 19 digit number if there is anything in there. The fields didnt come up in the query when it was based on Is Null. But if I changed it to a <1 they came up just fine. and After further testing, the change works just how I had it working with the Is Null or so I thought. Any ideas on the WHY behind this, I am really curious about it, thought I would get some opinions on why this happened.

Query On Other Queries Inc. IS NULL

Aug 16, 2007

I have a form which a user can select upto 3 different options to search the main database.

The main table has:
RVA Date
Council
Introducer
PS NO
Period
Asset Description
Current Cost
SSAP21
Position

The three fields the user can search on is:
Council
PS No.
Asset Description

I have created 3 individual queries to find the records for each of the above, as the other two choices could be left blank.

Not sure if one super query can be done to show the records based on the user input (as I say one or two choices could be left blank).

So far I have managed to get a main query (based on the 3 other queries) to work on all choices made by the user except Asset Description with the other two left blank.

I have made relationships between the three queries on the main query. Linking Council,PS No. & Asset Description to each other.

Almost there, just need the main query to work on the user selecting Asset Description only.....

Queries :: Join Results Of Unmatched Query With Matched Query To Include Null

Mar 24, 2013

I am trying to do the good 'ol sales report (query) to include customers with no sales.

I have a customers table, account number table, sales table & sales (line) detail table. (all linked in that order)

If I run a query to show customers (in the customer table) with account numbers, that works

An unmatched query to show customer without an account number works (but of course the unmatched account number field isn't shown).

How can I get the two two be shown together with the "unmatched" having a null or 0 for their account number?

I am guessing in principle, the resulting solution can be modified to show customers without sales alongside those with sales?

I have create a table clients that contains multiple column i.e. Id, First Name, Last Name, Starting Date, Company , while defining the table I did not mark REQUIRED property of any column

I have created a form based on this table "CLIENTS",

I create the company as combo box and taking the list from COMPANIES.ID

I put the validation rule as IS NOT NULL and put validating text Select Company from list.

If I marked REQUIRED property of this column in table definition as YES then it displays system generated message with tablename.controlname, while i want to display my own message.

But when i input the data and leave the Company column blank the validation is not executed.

There are three columns in the form on which I want to apply the same validation.

Queries :: Query With IIF And Null Entries

Jul 29, 2013

I have a form that feeds information to a query which in turn sets up a report. For clarity i will list out in basic terms what I have

Input Form
- Check Box to activate/De-activate a text field [chk-active]
- Text field for a parameter [txt-Parameter]

the query has a column that has null values from the originating table. These values will be added a t a later date, but need to be queried and reported at some business intervals.

In the query criteria for this column, I have the following Criteria

Like IIF([Forms]![ReportGenerator]![chk-Active]=0, "*", [Forms]![ReportGenerator]![txt-Parameter])[/I][/I]

I have tried for the last 5 hours to figure out how to write the formula to be able to get the blank entries to show up as well but have had no luck.

I have tried several things such as save record, use dirty = false for the on exit event of the subform control but nothing works. Here is the procedure:

Code:

Queries :: Passing (Is Not Null) As A Parameter In A Query?

Jun 16, 2015

I have a form which users can toggle whether they want to only see entries that has data in a certain field. Previously I have set up a separate query with a hardcoded 'Is Not Null' in the criteria, and set the form to call the different queries based on the status of a toggle button. This time there is 22 queries that need to be modified so I'm hoping there's a better way.

I have a hidden textbox on my form that has value "Is Not Null" or Null based on the position of the toggle button.

In my query for the field criteria I have [Forms]![MainForm].[txtCriteria] where txtCriteria is the textbox previously mentioned.

When I run the query no data is shown.

Queries :: Custom Field In A Query And Null To 0

Database query. I need the query to count the records of a field and display a number for the records of the field. For instance, one field is [Genre] and the other is [Show]. The query needs to list the Genres along with the number of shows for each genre. I've been able to just use the query design and add the genre field and I can add the show field, use totals count which gives me the genre counts the number of shows. My problem is the null. Some genres don't have a show listed so the genre doesn't even show up in the result. If I could get the the genres that have null shows to result a 0 it would be perfect.

Queries :: Calculating With Null Fields In A Query

Oct 2, 2014

My training database requires me to identify each training record in the tblEmpTrainHist table as either "Compliant" or "Delinquent". I thought a simple calculation in my query:

RecordStatus: IIF([DateReceived]<=[DateDue],"Compliant","Delinquent")

would do the trick. However, I did not consider the records where the employee has not yet completed the training and the field [DateReceived] is Null. There are two considerations: those employees who have no [DateReceived], but have not yet reached the DateDue (Compliant); and those employees who have exceeded the DateDue (Delinquent).
