Queries :: Search Without Using All Search Boxes
Dec 18, 2014
My search form has, say, 5 search boxes. Eg.
Vee
Cathederal
RIB
Keel
Lifting Keel
I need to have all the boxes visible and searchable. BUT I only want to search one or two at a time. How do I do this?

I'm trying to build an database for aircraft operators. I've got the basic tables structure and relationships but I'm stuck on building an search form to filter records by user input.I've got following controls on my form (unbound):
1. AircraftType (combo box) from tblAircrafts
2. CompanyName (combo box) from tblListOfAircraftsOperators
3. TeailNumber (text box) from tblAircraftOperators
4. AirportNameSearch (combo box) from tblAirports
5. PassengersNumber (text box) from tblAircraftOperators
6. ManufactureYear (text box) from tblAircraftOperators
7. SourceSearch (combo box) from tblInfoSource
8. CountrySearch (combo box) from tblCountry
9. CategorySearch (combo box) from tblAircraftCategory
10. EamilToOperator (text box) from tblAircraftOperators
11. InteriorPhoto (Bound object frame) from tblAircraftOperators
12. ExteriorPhot (bound object frame) from AircraftOperators
I need to enable users to search for aircrafts based on those criteria. As I mentioned I'm new to Access and I don't have any advanced coding skills. I have a query build to perform the search and this is the code I've managed to write so far:
SELECT AircraftOperators.RegistrationNumber, AircraftOperators.PassengersNumber, AircraftOperators.ManufactureYear, AircraftOperators.EmailToOperator, AircraftOperators.ExteriorPhoto, AircraftOperators.InteriorPhoto, tblListOfAircraftOperators.OpratorName, tblAircrafts.AircraftType
FROM tblAircrafts INNER JOIN (tblAirports INNER JOIN (AircraftOperators INNER JOIN tblListOfAircraftOperators ON AircraftOperators.CompanyName =

I have a table with all information on it, that is input via various forms, I then have different queries pulling information from all information to run reports off. These all work fine, my problem is my 'Search Form' - below
I have created a query that finds information from 'all information' using
Like "*" & [Forms]![SearchAll F]![txtDateRasied] & "*"
This is working on all text boxes, It only half works on the combo box's when I use
Like "*" & [Forms]![SearchAll F]![combofailureanalysis] & "*"
If a selection is made in the combo box the query brings the correct results, however, if all the fields are left blank it should bring up every record, but it doesn't do this. I am certain it is the combo box's that are causing this anomoly as when I remove the combo box criteria it works perfectly again.

I currently have a database with a few search forms. I recently attempted to add a box on one of my search forms to search 3 cells of a record for a key word. What happens is when I go to search, say for P0442, it does not bring up all of the records that contain that keyword in the 3 cells I have outlined. If I step down the code in the OR boxes of the query, it seems to work better but then for some reason my other search criteria , (Tracking number etc) does not work. I will upload the database for reference. I am currently working on the Search(View Only) and that is where you will find the query to work on.

I have a search form that uses a query to show results of a search, but everytime I press search everything comes up even though I have entered search parameters, even though my search requeries every time and the search used to work before I added new records today. Also when I press the query alone on the navigation pane it asks me for the parameters and then it actually works but it won't when I use my form.

I am trying to make a search option in my form header. Right now I have two unbound combo boxes (CboAccountsfilter and cboCourseName) that I can use to filter my records. Currently, I can use the drop down for CboAccountsfilter and a list of accounts will appear. When I select one, the corresponding Course Names will appear in cboCourseName. This works fine...Code below. I would like to take the filtering a step farther and add checkboxes to filter the data. I my form, there currently exist several check boxes (yes/no)...(Priority, Rep Top Target, Manager Top Target, ect). I would like to have the option to use a check box to filter. I.E if I had a checkbox in my header called PriorityFilter, if checked it would only bring up those records that met the two combo boxes criteria and was a priority.
Below is the code I have so far...it doesnt have anything for the checkbox because I am at a lost of how to get started.
Private Sub CboAccountsfilter_Change()
Me.Requery
Me.cboCourseName.Requery
Me.Check178.Requery
End Sub
[code]...

Hi all..
I am using the following search function to search my database:
Private Sub cmdSearch2_Click()
Dim strLastName As String
Dim strSearch As String
'Check txtSearch for Null value or Nill Entry first.
If IsNull(Me![txtSearch2]) Or (Me![txtSearch2]) = "" Then
MsgBox "Please enter a value!", vbOKOnly, "Invalid Search Criterion!"
Me![txtSearch2].SetFocus
Exit Sub
End If
'Performs the search using value entered into txtSearch
'and evaluates this against values in strStudentID
DoCmd.ShowAllRecords
DoCmd.GoToControl ("LastName")
DoCmd.FindRecord Me!txtSearch2
LastName.SetFocus
strLastName = LastName.Text
txtSearch2.SetFocus
strSearch = txtSearch2.Text
'If matching record found sets focus in strStudentID and shows msgbox
'and clears search control
If strLastName = strSearch Then
'MsgBox "Match Found For: " & strSearch, , "Congratulations!"
LastName.SetFocus
'txtSearch = ""
'If value not found sets focus back to txtSearch and shows msgbox
Else
MsgBox "Match Not Found For: " & strSearch & " - Please Try
Again.", _
, "Invalid Search Criterion!"
txtSearch2.SetFocus
End If
End Sub
Which i got from here: http://www.databasedev.co.uk/text_search.html
Question #1
I have my own record counter setup at the bottom of the form via this:
Private Sub Form_Current()
'Inserts current record number and total number of records
Me.txtCurrent = Me.CurrentRecord
Me.RecordsetClone.MoveLast
Me.txtTotal = Me.RecordsetClone.RecordCount
End Sub
I would like to have this show how many searchs were found. I really don't
care about how many entries at this point... but if you do a search via
lastname for "johnson" I have 15 right now.. I would like to let the end user
know their are 15 enteries with the last name "johnson"... how can I do this
if it is possible with what I have setup..
Question #2
How do I get the search lastname field to go blank after I hit the
search button??
Thanks
R~

i have a search form (see atachment1) with 2 combo boxes.
i have a pruduct form that runs on this query:
Code: SELECT * FROM tblSpeler WHERE (((tblSpeler.merk)=forms!frmZoeken!zoektekst1) And ((tblSpeler.type) Like forms!frmZoeken!zoektekst2));
if i start the the product form, it asks me for the make, and then for the player » it finds the right player in the form.
but via my search form it won´t work. it only opens the product form and no records are shown.
so: in the search form, when i select a "make", and then the "type", and then press search. i want it to show the right record in the product form.
+
when i select a make (eg "apple"), i want the type combo box to exclude all the types that are not from apple (eg only: ipod mini, ipod 20gb. right now it´s like in atachment2.
i know this is a common question, been trying to figure it out with a eg database, but i can´t get it done. all help is welcome
thanks,
-d

I would like to have 5 combo boxes from which users can choose fields to search, e.g.
cbo1 - choose YEAR, TYPE, LOCATION, COST, COLOUR, SIZE
cbo2 - choose YEAR, TYPE, LOCATION, COST, COLOUR, SIZE
cbo3 - choose YEAR, TYPE, LOCATION, COST, COLOUR, SIZE
cbo4 - choose YEAR, TYPE, LOCATION, COST, COLOUR, SIZE
cbo5 - choose YEAR, TYPE, LOCATION, COST, COLOUR, SIZE
criteria are stored in txtbox1, txtbox 2 etc. so the search string could be
WHERE cbo1 = txtbox1 AND cbo2 = txtbox2 etc.
If the user doesn't choose anything for a combo, the search should ignore that field.

I have a form (employee info) that requires the user to do a search to find the employee before then editing anything that needs to be edited.
I have a search box that will find the relevant record without any problem, however what I am looking to do is hide text boxes on the form and have them appear only once the search has found the matching record.
If no matching record is found, I would then like a message box that states 'No matching employee, would you like to add an employee' and when the user clicks OK, it then reveals the same hidden text boxes and sets focus to the first one of the bunch.
Now, I have used the 'me.textboxname.visible = True (or False) elsewhere, however, I am not sure how to trigger that after a search.
I assume I am looking at an If statement, but I am not sure how to construct it, hence turning to the experts.
Code:
Private Sub txtEmployeeSearch_AfterUpdate()
If txtEmployee = DLookup("EmployeeNumber", "tblEmployeeInfo") Then
Me.txtboxname.Visible = True
Me.txtboxname2.Visible = True
DoCmd.GoToControl "txtboxname"
Else
MsgBox "Employee Not Found", vbYesNo
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
End If
End Sub
I know that there is a massive gap where I have put <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< - but I am stumped as to what to put in there?

I have a table of data regarding companies (contact info, etc). The company I work for provides these companies with up to 10 different products. On my input form, I have created 10 check boxes (and thus, 10 columns of Yes/No data in the corresponding table).
Each company has at least 1 product checked off, and up to all 10.
I would like to create a combo box that lists all 10 products, and upon selecting one, a list box then populates with the names of the companies (primary key) that use that specific product.
So, for example,
Company A buys CATS and DOGS from us
Company B buys DOGS
Company C buys CATS and ELEPHANTS
Combo box options: CATS, DOGS, ELEPHANTS
If I choose DOGS, then a list box gets populated with:
Company A
Company B
and when I click either of these, the record should be brought up for the respective company.
All of this should take place in the header of the form, while the form itself can be updated based on search selections.

I have two unbound text boxes and a search button adjacent each that allows me to search for a user via two methods:
1) Payroll ID
2) Surname
They have the following code:
txtPayrollIDSearch
Code:
Private Sub txtPayrollIDSearch_AfterUpdate()
Dim sWHERE As String
sWHERE = "[PayrollID] = " & Me.txtPayrollIDSearch
sWHERE = "[PayrollID] = '" & Me.txtPayrollIDSearch & "'"
[code]...
Then minor differences between the above and the Surname search.I have two questions:
1) How do I make the search more friendly by allowing it to find partial matches, i.e., a user has a surname of 'Smith' but I want to search for 'Smi'?
2) How can I display further error messages if there aren't any matches?

I have a pair of captioned text boxes for taking the criteria for the search result. Currently the text boxes are tied with a date field. I would like to give the user's choice of a number of date fields. After some research, I believe option group control fits for this purpose. Unfortunately, I never try this function before.

why the code below is not functioning properly. When I type in an acronym in the textbox, it keeps saying there is an error "Run-time error '3345': Unkown or invalid field reference 'ABO'." I do have ABO in the field.
The dysfunctional code:
Code:
Private Sub btnFind_Click()
If (TxtFind & vbNullString) = vbNullString Then Exit Sub
Dim rs As DAO.Recordset
Set rs = Me.RecordsetClone
rs.FindFirst "[Acronym] = " & TxtFind
[Code] .....
The red highlighted line is where the debugger leads me to. Something with identifying the field? I would like to enable the search procedure to search throughout the entire records rather than just a specific field. How may I write such a line or two?

I have a form that has a subform on it. The main form shows a category of furniture and has custom navigation buttons and a search text box for asset numbers and command button that runs the search. The subform shows the asset numbers associated with that furniture category, sometimes there is only one asset number, in other cases there could be 60. There is a scroll bar to scroll through the asset numbers when there are too many to see in the initial window.
The buttons all work as they should except when I search for an asset number that is part of a category that has too many asset numbers to show in the main window. When this happens the "previous" and "next" navigation buttons do not take you to the previous or next record. All of the other buttons on the form work though - you can go to the first, or the last record, and you can search for a new asset.This is the code for the search:
Code:
Private Sub cmdAssetSearch_Click()
Dim rs As Object
If IsNull(Me.TextAsset) Or Me.TextAsset = "" Then
MsgBox "Please type in an asset number to search for.", vbOKOnly
Me.TextAsset.SetFocus
[code]....
I've also attached a picture of what I mean when I say there are more asset numbers than what the window shows.

1. I created a form with some search-fields which are related to a query. Then I added a Subform in which I put some more Search criteria (So that I can easily hide and unhide those additional searchfields). It sounds strange but is necessary ;-). Now I related those searchfields in the subform to the same query. When I run that query a window pops up that I should put in a value in all those searchfields which are in the subform. But I told Access that it should display all rows, if there is no value in those searchfields. Just as I did it with the Searchcriteria in the Main form. Do I have to do something special, when I have a query which is related to two Forms?
2. I want a searchfield to search in three different columns. Usually the value will just be found in one of those columns. As the Table I search is very long and has many searchfields and multiple of those will relate to more than one column, is there an easy way to do it in VBA? As I did it by using the "or" field when designing a query, but this seems very slow and unstable.

SELECT customers.ACCOUNT_NO, customers.CUSTOMER FROM customers; UNION SELECT "*", "All" From Customers;
But am still getting "#Error" in the combo box.

I have a database that uses four forms and each form has it's own table and each form has it's own search button to find a specific record within that table. I would like to use one search button that will look at all four tables and bring up the correct record when the request number is entered. Can I link all the tables to perform this or is code required? Can someone send me in the right direction for how to do this? Give me an example of code if it's required?
Thanks for any help I can get.
