Queries :: Unable To Open Or Design Queries From Older Access Files
Jan 1, 2014
Im trying to work on an db in Access 2007 that was migrated from Access 2003 (in fact its been migrated several times starting from Access 97). It executes and runs with no problems in both versions.
The problem is when trying to open some queries (not all) - Access is unable to open the query in design mode and gives me this error :
" is not a valid name. Make sure that it does not include invalid characters or punctuation and that it is not too long.
However, as I cant open it - I cant check it. Im pretty sure none of the fields have invalid characters (they do have spaces) and Im not sure how long is too long....

My issue is that one of my queries can be run, opened in SQL view, but not opened in design view. When I attempt to view in design view, Access freezes and I am forced to close the program. My database is split, FE on my local, BE on another computer on my LAN.
Below is the SQL, I tried to just copy and paste this code into a new query and I encountered the same issue.
Code:
SELECT tbl_SurveyJobs.job_number, tbl_JobTypes.job_type_description, tbl_Clients.company_name, tbl_SurveyJobs.start_date, tbl_SurveyJobs.end_date, tbl_SurveyJobs.comments, tbl_SurveyJobs.contact_notes, tbl_SurveyJobs.regplan_number, tbl_SurveyJobs.sheet_number, tbl_SurveyJobs.mplan_number, tbl_SurveyJobs.lot_block, tbl_SurveyJobs.township, tbl_SurveyJobs.concession, tbl_SurveyJobs.township_lot,
[Code] .....

How to build a query in Access 2010/13 that will not display any records that are older than 3 hours? See below for more specifics.
The criteria would be based on a field that houses the time (End Time) and also a field that houses a number (Status). So, only if the field in the record says 3 (based on the Status field) then it should not display the record after 3 hours (based on the End Time field) of being changed to a 3. Is it possible to do that?
I have attached a screenshot of what I am referring to.

I've built an an update query that updates a Yes/No field "Expired?" to "Yes" if the expiration date has passed i.e. if the current date is newer than the expiration date. I thought this would translate into the current date being greater than the expiration date?
UPDATE Alert
SET Alert.[Expired?] = 'Yes'
WHERE Alert.Current_Date>Alert.Expiration_Date;
When I run this, it identifies the records to be updated, but then stops updating the fields due to "a conversion failure."

2013 does NOT recognize DBF files, we are trying to find a solid work around to LINK to our DBF files.
There are about 30 DBF files that get updated EVERY week. And there are about 60 employees that LINK to the various DBF files. Importing is not a realistic solution given these circumstances.

My table occasionally gets a second record added for the same person. What is the easiest way to update the new record with the non-zero fields from the older record, then delete the older record? There is a unique id field as well as a timestamp, so knowing which is older isn't a problem. Is there an easy way to do this?

I have a table in access database which contains a text field 'EDate' that stores Date value in format (12-Apr-2013). Now I want to run a sql query on that field. User will give an input date. The sql query needs to fetch me all the records from access database whose Edate is less than or equal to the user input date.
I am using DateValue function to convert my text filed Edate into date. My query is something like this:
select * from table_name where DateValue(EDate)<='user_input_date'
I am able to perform above task if the system language settings are 'English'. But if system language settings are different say Turkish, then the query fails.
I searched a lot on web and found that DateTime function compares test data with the system date time format and gives the result. Thus it fails with different language settings.

Querying a field for a number of days from today's date but not had a lot of luck finding how to query this from a date in the future.
Currently I have as criteria for the relevant field:
Code:
<[Period Start (dd/mm/yy - less 5 years from financial year end)]
which prompts for a parameter but using this I have to figure out the date 5 years from the future date first and then enter this.
Surely there must be code that allows me to simply enter the date, in the prompt and this then shows me data of 5 years or older equipment!?

I have created a database in Access 2010 and I am not able to open the same database in Access 2007. I have read somewhere that it is possible to open. I get the message, " Unrecognized database format". In Access options, the default file format is, "Access 2007".

I have had to use my first crosstab queries.
I now understand that when opening and saving crosstab queries Access (2010) runs that query to ascertain the column names. Unless you hard-code them. Running the query takes at least 20 minutes.
I have hard-coded where I can, but one report takes arbitrary dates so I can't hard-code them.
I believe that turning off AutoCorrect might make a difference to whether the query runs - but I don't want to turn it off.

trying to create an update query to Budget table using the Access Design View:
Field: PctSls (in tblBudget) Update to: [Expense] / [Sales]. The update query always returns 0. However, if I create a Select query using the same calculation, the correct results is displayed. PctSls is defined in the Budget table.
I haven't worked with Access (2003) for several years but this seems too simple to be causing me such frustration. (Was only a casual user even then).

Not sure if this is the correct forum but its worth a shot.
When I try to open any database, MS Access will hang if there is already another instance msaccess.exe running. I even tried opening two newly created blank dbs with the same result. Has anyone ever come accross this behavior?
I have tried repairinging/reinstalling/checking and unchecking "Windows in Taskbar option"
Thanks for any help!

I currently have a query set up which responds and filters by the date.
I use the current code in the criteria on the query for todays date less 7 days
Code:
DateAdd("d",-7,Date())
This works perfectly and I had no problem with it. However I need to adjust the criteria so it is less than 7days ago OR OLDER....
How would I go about doing that?

Why the ability to view the properties of an object within a form is not available when you double click on it in design view?
I was happily working away double clicking on a command button to edit some code when for some reason the next time I tried to edit it did not open up for me.
I was unable to access it even by right clicking on the object & selecting properties as that also appears to be disabled, not greyed out or anything but just does nothing when selected.
Have I inadvertently changed a setting somewhere that prevents the properties from being displayed?

I am running Office Pro 2013 with Windows 8.1.

Hi can anyone help. My database is running on a Citrix server. No real problems except that I am continualy being left with the database apparantly locked by another user. Am unable to delete the LDB file even when no other users are logged on. Is there a way of deleting LDB files in relation to stale Access sessions. I know that in normal circumstances these files close automatically. Problems seems to be occurring when the database is not exited properly or the connection to the server drops for some reason. I've tried loads but can't find a workaround.

I'm using Access 2007.
I have a button on a form that when clicked, does the following:
I have a table called [Workorder Parts] that has 128 records in it with Fields named WorkOrderPartID (Autonumber), WorkorderID(Number), PartID(Number), Quantity(Number), UnitPrice(Currency), Notes(Memo), KitID(Number).
I want to copy records into another table called [tKitsWorkorderParts] that has the identical structure based upon a value in the field WorkorderID. For testing purposes let's assume that the field contains the value "12". There are 28 records in the table that have the value set to "12"
If I hardcode the value "12" into the following SQL statement, it finds and copies the 28 records correctly.
DoCmd.RunSQL "INSERT INTO [tKitsWorkOrderParts] SELECT * FROM [WorkOrder Parts] WHERE [WorkOrder Parts.WorkOrderID] = 12"
so far so good.....
Now, on the form there is a Text Box called WorkorderID that contains the value "12".
If I change the code to the following, I get all 128 records instead of just the 28 I am expecting:
DoCmd.RunSQL "INSERT INTO [tKitsWorkOrderParts] SELECT * FROM [WorkOrder Parts] WHERE [WorkOrder Parts.WorkOrderID] = WorkorderID"
I have inserted a few MsgBox displays to display the value contained in WorkorderID and it shows "12"...
What am I doing wrong???

So I have this form with a combo box which successfully displays a range of items from which I would like to select from - but unfortunately I cannot. I cannot select anything from the combo box.
I have checked the form and table to ensure I have edit rights - which I do.
The form is based on a query - attached is a picture of the relationships within the query.
I assume I have created a non updateable query but this is only an assumption.
I am lost about the best course of action to take. Is there a way to identify the problem?
Do I just cut my loses and recreate the functionality somehow?
