Queries :: Update Fields By Splitting Text From Other Field

Nov 28, 2014

I have one field called FULL_ADDRESS. From that field I am going to populate two other fields. One called ADD_1 and the other, ADD_2.

In the FULL_ADDRESS field I have the following text :

"BOX 2747 ROCKY MOUNTAIN HOUSE AB T4T 1L7"

I want ADD_1 updated to:

"BOX 2747 ROCKY MOUNTAIN HOUSE AB"

and ADD_2 updated to:

"T4T 1L7"

While I understand how to do an update if I was using a space as a reference, i.e.

Trim(Left([FULL_ADDRESS],Instrrev([FULL_ADDRESS]," ")-1))
Trim(Mid([FULL_ADDRESS],Instrrev([A]," ")+1))

I can't figure out how to skip the first space from the right, and reference to the second occurring space, so that I get "T4T 1L7" to populate the ADD_2 field, and everything to the left of "T4T 1L7" placed in the ADD_1 field.

Queries :: Splitting Text Field Into Columns

Feb 15, 2014

Is there a function or query that I can split a field into different columns?

For example, I have First Name, Last Name, Address.

But I want to split the address field into Address1, Address2, Address3, Address4 as the initial Address field has a lot of characters with commas e.g. 11 London Road, Liketown, Likeshire, London.

So, I want to be Address1: 11 London Road, Address2: Liketown, Address3: Likeshire, Address4: London.

I thought that I can export the field using a simple query and then re-import it with using the text field into columns option, but it is time consuming.

Reports :: Splitting Single Field Into Multiple Text Boxes Or Multiline Text Box

Jun 4, 2013

I have a single field in a table called "Client Contact", where users enter a semicolon between the name, address, and city state & zip. My reason for this was so we could copy client info with a single copy and paste (like from an email). But, on the final report, it needs to have these three parts split up into different lines, or even different textboxes. I can't find a way to do that.

Splitting A Field’s Data Into Multiple Fields

Jun 8, 2006

Hi All

Been handed a contacts database, one field of the DB includes all the industry sectors associated with the customer, with multiple industry references separated only by a comma within the field (e.g. Insurance-Life,Insurance-Broking,Insurance-Motor,Insurance-Pensions,Insurance-Home,Insurance-Health) – I want to split this one field into multiple fields using the comma as the break point (this is something that’s relative easy to do in Excel with the ‘Text to Columns’ tool – but unfortunately it can’t take the 130,000 odd records of the databasel)

Can any one recommend an expression or method that will see the 6 industry references split into 6 separate fields ?

Thanks

Jim

Splitting Text Values From A String Into Separate Field

Jan 25, 2005

I have a table field which long ago was merged from several other fields. When the data was merged into the field it was delimited by "1." then "2." up to "5."
Example: MergedField = "1.Animal 2.Large 3.African 4.Grey 5.Long Nose"

I now want to split it appart in a query where "1.Animal" goes into expression1, "2.Large" goes into expression2, etc.

I need to base the text on where the one number begins and grab everything until the next number in the mergefield is detected.

Can someone show me the syntax for this.

Thanks!

Queries :: Update Field Based On Existing Record Fields

Jun 3, 2013

I have a field called uniqueID which I would like to update based on 2 other fields that are already populated in my recordset (from running previous queries). I heard it is not possible to do an Update Select like shown below.

select max(uniqueID) from myTable where a = "value of field a from first record in record set" and b = "value of field b from first record in record set"

If it is true that I cannot do an Update Select then I am trying to do something in VBA. How can I Loop each row in the record set and store the values from fields a and b. I would obviously then need to pass those values into the sql above and store the result in a variable. I would then do a straight update to put the value of uniqueID into myTable.

Modules & VBA :: Splitting Dataset Sorted On Two Fields Based On Change In Value In One Field

Feb 6, 2014

I am new to MS Access, and am not sure if what I want to do is even possible. It is my understanding that comparing subsequent cells within a field in a database cannot be done- so I thought I'd see if there is a way to go around it.

I have a dataset for pedestrian activity, with over 3 million rows and 40 columns - too big for excel to handle.

I need to sort the entire dataset by 2 fields, following which I need to search down the field containing my pedestrian ids (numbered 1, 2, 3... till approx 10000), and when my ped id changes from one to the next, I need to check the value in a field showing the ped location, and if that matches with the ped's previous location, I need to copy out a cell corresponding to the previous cell's time stamp. If it doesn't match, I need to copy out another time stamp from another field.

Queries :: Design A Query To Show Only Empty Field As TEXT Fields In Table

Mar 2, 2014

I am just querying a single table, no relationship involved with another table. As you can see form the attached jpeg, the ZIP field in some cases is empty. I would run a search using Is NULL but the field is NOT numerical. It's a long story but I had to make this field a TEXT field. Basically, what statement do I have to insert in the criteria field to just pull up the EMPTY ZIP fields?

Update Query Work On Allowzerolength On Text Fields

Sep 30, 2005

Hi,

I am using a update query to update a table from another table. This query however will works only if I set the allowzerolength to yes in the table design otherwise validation error message will appear. This means that I cannot use the "Is Null " anymore because this empty space " " can appear. Is there any a way i can filter out those empty fields in the query design then? Thank you for your help.

Wierd Prob: Cannot Update SQL Server Text-fields For Some Records, But Can For Others

Feb 22, 2005

Hello,

I have a very strange problem:

I have a table linked to an SQL Server table in my MS Access 2000 Application containing 5 text-fields (SQL Server Type, in Access seen as MEMO-fields) and several other fields (in total about 140 fields). Updating any field works fine except for some records. In those records I can only edit the non-text-fields in my application. When I try to edit one of the text-fields I get a error message telling me that another user has edited the record and i have to discard my changes.

The strange thing is that this problem only crops up for some records. (1 in a 100 or so) All other records work fine.

Does anyone know what happens here? And how this can be fixed?

Thanks.
Kaine

Best Way Of Splitting String Of 110 Chrs In To 110 Fields?

Nov 16, 2007

I have a txt file that I'd like to import, which contains answers to a test. The number of questions on the test varies year to year, but this year there are 110 (split in to two sections).

I'd like to import the file, so each answer is a field, and then score the answers against a 'correct' answer lookup table.

What's the best way of approaching this? I first thought of using vba to read the text file, split the text, and then use an SQL command to insert to to my table. This seems tedious (there are around 6500 respondents).

Anything else I could do instead?

Thanks,
Antro.

Splitting Address Into Seperate Fields

Jul 22, 2007

Hi,

I have a an address field in my current MS Access table that has records following this sort of format eg. 21 Brown St, 21/56 Smith St

I want to separate every word in this field in to it's own field eg. field1=21
field2=Brown
field3=St
Addresses come in different formats (see examples above, with / or - etc.)

I'd like some code to complete this in VBA - please note I'm very new to programming so unfortunately everything must be explained.

Thanks

Update Field From Text Box

Dec 7, 2005

I have a form with two combo boxes, one for shipping point and one for destination point. I then use a text box to concatenate the 2 values together. All of this is working fine on the form. I now want to store this value in a freight table. I'm using the table as the controlsource for the form so I have tried the following code but it doesn't work.

Private Sub Text27_AfterUpdate()

Me.Route = Me.Text27.Column(0)

End Sub

Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks for you response.

Queries :: Update Hyperlink Display Text

So I have a table with 2 fields. The first field has the addresses to multiple hyperlink paths to folders on my computer. In this field the display text matches the hyperlink paths. In the second field I have the desired display text for field 1.I have tried using an update query to either:

1) Change the display texts of field 1 to match field 2 while preserving the hyperlink path
2) Add the hyperlink path from field 1 to field 2 without altering the display name.

I cannot get either one to work. Upon updating field 1, I lose the path, and upon updating field 2, I lose the name.

How To Update A Field With Contents Of Two Other Fields

I'm an excel user and in using excel I can take two fields and combine their data in one field. I've got about 6 database files with anywhere form 1000 to 3000 records that have already been prepared and imported into access database files .mdb and I realize that the firstname lastname fields need to also be combined into a contact field with both names. In Excel it's easy in access I'm a little lost. I was looking to an update query however I can't find instructions on what I'm trying to do.

Queries :: Update 3 Fields In Master Table

Feb 19, 2014

I'm having problems with an Update query. I have data coming in on one file that I am loading to a temp table that I want to update on another table in my database. The problem is that when I run my update query, it is wiping out everything that DOESN'T match. I have 5 fields that MUST be equal before the update can occur. I'm trying to update 3 fields in my "master" table.

Here is my SQL:

UPDATE NPPDcopy LEFT JOIN tempNPPD ON (NPPDcopy.Hour_Ending = tempNPPD.Hour_Ending) AND (NPPDcopy.TieLineName = tempNPPD.TieLineName) AND (NPPDcopy.AdjBalancingAuthority = tempNPPD.AdjBalancingAuthority) AND (NPPDcopy.BalancingAuthority = tempNPPD.BalancingAuthority) AND (NPPDcopy.OperatingDay = tempNPPD.OperatingDay) SET NPPDcopy.Import = [tempNPPD].[Import], NPPDcopy.Export = [tempNPPD].[Export], NPPDcopy.Net = [tempNPPD].[Net];

Queries :: Update Several Fields All At Once In One Single Query

May 23, 2014

I am trying to update several fields all at once in one single query. Also, I can only use the Design View (No SQL)

The weirdest thing keeps happening though: The more fields I enter to get updated, the less rows get updated.

For example,

When I have only one field that gets updated and I click "run" the window pops up saying I'm about to update 9 rows. It asks me if I'm sure I want to update those records so I say "no".....

Then, I add in another field and click "run" and the window pops up daying I'm about to update 8 rows. When it asks me if I'm sure I want to update those records, again I say "no"......

Then, I add in another field and this time it says 7 rows..... and the trend goes on and on until it says I'm going to update 0 rows.

I have about 15 fields I need to update all at once. I don't get why its not letting me update them simultaneously.

Text Field Update Depending On List Box Value

Aug 19, 2005

I realize there are several threads already dedicated to this particular topic but my situation is slightly different... First, my tables are set up like so:

tblStudent(studentID,LName,FName,MI,Gender)
tblRack(rackID,roomID,studentID,rackNumber)
tblRooms(roomID,roomNumber)

There are 3 racks to a room and a total of 90 rooms. A room can hold up to 3 students. A list box holds values that I have typed in (the room numbers). I went with typing them in rather than pulling them from a query because of the way my tables are set up. If I pull from a query as the tables stand, room numbers show up 3 times, once for each rack. I want to be able to fill in text boxes with information on students assigned to the room I choose from my list box (FName, LName, etc...) I'm kind of at a loss here on how to go about getting the info that I want. Using the column property to populate text fields is probably going to be much easier but a query is needed (I think) and using a query causes room numbers to show up 3 times in my list box... Anyone want to throw me a bone?? Thanks! :)

Queries :: Update Query Peculiarity - Not All Fields Updated

Nov 18, 2013

I'm mid build on a commitments tracking (pseudo Purchase Order system) project, but seem to have run into an issue with a loop I'm building to allow users to edit commitments. The idea is that an edit form is launched, values amended and the submit button is clicked. A VB subroutine then validates the entries to ensure that the mandatory entries are included. It then writes a copy of the original values to the Archive table, before attempting to update the existing commitment with the new values..

This is working perfectly, apart from the fact that 3 fields that are "updated" are being updated to a blank value..

Code:
Private Sub CommitSubmit_Click()
Dim SQLStr, LastID, DOwner, DHeading As String
Dim ErrState, Dtype, DProperty, DTCA, DITD, DSD, DED, DSP, DRetention, DRA, DRPD, DSupplier, DDOW, DStatus, DUser, DShD As String
Dim Authcheck, Complete, ErrMsg As Boolean
Dim QDF1, QDF2 As QueryDef

[code]...
