Queries :: Use Of String Expression As Field Definition And ARGUMENT In IIF Statement
Apr 25, 2014
I am developing a calender to display HOTEL room occupancy (past, present) and combine with future "outlook" dates and 1/0 values from active registrations that go beyond the present date.
I am working with MS ACCESS 2007. My problem is ONE SPECIFIC QUERY AND IIF STATEMENT. I want to concatenate some text (using &) along with numbers converted to text (using the CSTr function). I am using iif function and I want to use the full text string as a variable argument to be executed in the iif function. The result of the &concatenate is a text field like [p1] or [p2] or [p#] with numbers 1-31.
But, I do not want the final result as the argument. I want the query and iif to use the string expression written into the argument as the variable argument that can be calculated based on OTHER numbers that change everyday in the daily run of the calender.
The field in the statement [calc number] is a date conversion factor that changes everyday.
I want the iif statement to execute using the string as a variable argument. I am writing only within the QUERY to define the query object. I am not writing into any SQL module or code. My field definition and iif statement is below (calc number changes everyday)
CalDate18: iif(18 greater date();"[p" & [calc number] & "]";0
I do not have greater-than key on this international keyboard !
When I use this in an update query, I get format conversion error. When I use the same definition in MAKE-TABLE query, it gives the resolved value "[p1]" for the value of [CalDate18] ......... that is not what I want.
I want the string to be taken literally and executed. Seems there may be a special character to precede the argument or WRAP the argument such as done in Excel. Example # "[p" & [calc number] & "]" #

I generally use Cognos for my queries, so the overly user friendlyness of access is confusing me and im not proficient enough in sql to just go in and edit the code...
How do i generate a query that groups data in unique ways in the result, but does not change the data in the originating table.
For example:
I have the column tbemployment.dept . In a crosstab query i want everybody that isnt tbvoter.dept='BELLS' to be counted as 'other'.
In Cognos i would do this in the 'data definition' window for that field and use 'if (tbvoter.dept<> 'BELLS') then ('other') else (tbvoter.dept)'
How do i do this in access?

I have a query based on a query, when I added a new field to the base query, this field did not appear in the list of fields in the design definition when I try and add to the upper query. It just shows the original fields only.
Same thing happened in a field on a report - I had to delete the field and create it again...

I've got a query. One field is an expression on which I'm filtering.
A shortened version of the expression is
Expr1: IIf([Status]=Active,"Yes","No")
There are other parts to the formula, hence why I'm not filtering [Status] itself, but stripping them out gives the same problem.I'm filtering on "Yes".What is happening is when I close the Expression builder, it changes "Active" to a parameter, thusly:-
Expr1: IIf([Status]=[Active],"Yes","No")
Status is a text field, it's a query on a single table, there's no field called Active.

I have a 3rd party database where I have no control over how the data is entered. I've been given the task of creating a Crystal report that would need to gather data from two databases. The link between the two databases in my report would be on a quote number. In one database, the quote number is in it's own field. In the 3rd party database, the quote number is stored in a memo field along with other data.
Here's an example:
4000 C7875
9003267 T7761
90000167/4010/T6895
4010 T7152A
TPCA #1756/2914
The data I'm after is
C7875
T7761
T6895
T7152A
*No data from the 5th row since the data after the "T" isn't numerical
So far I'm thinking of using an IIF statement to check for the existance of a C or T, then if true, use a nested IIF statement within the first to check for numeric, if true, use the Mid function to pull out the quote number.
My first concern is this could become a complicated IIF statement and was wondering if there was another direction I should be looking in acheiving this.
My second concern is if I go with this method, some of the quote numbers have a space after them, some of them have no space after them, some may even have a "/" after them. How would I go about accomplishing this?

In my statment below the ID is an autonumber. I placed it in the first part ofthe SQL string..but not where I have to variables referenced...
I have to add it to the SQL statement...Its not a varible although I can make it one by getting the largest number nad adding one...
Do I have to make it a non-autonumber and do it like I said above
Or is there another way to treat the autonumber (ID) in the SQL INSERT INTO statement...
THanks
Code:MySQL = "INSERT INTO dbo_data ("MySQL = MySQL & "ID,Name,Owners_Residence,Notice_Expiration,Notes,N otice_Number,Status,Notice_Date,Property_Address,N uisance_Type,Addition_Name,Range,Lot,Block,Zip_Cod e,Display_PID,Sec_tion,Township,Property_City,Prop erty_State,Property_Zip"MySQL = MySQL & ") values ("MySQL = MySQL & "'" & varName & "','" & varOwners_Residence & "','" & varNotice_Expiration & "','" & varNotes & "','" & varNotice_Number & "','" & varStatus & "','" & varNotice_Date & "','" & varProperty_Address & "','" & varNuisance_Type & "','" & varAddition_Name & "','" & varRange & "','" & varLot & "','" & varBlock & "','" & varProperty_Zip & "','" & varDisplay_PID & "','" & varSec_tion & "','" & varTownship & "','" & varProperty_City & "','" & varProperty_State & "','" & varZip_Code & "'"MySQL = MySQL & ");"

I'm trying to run a very basic iif statement to correct hourly data for sorting. Basically, a trading day runs from 8am - 8am, so I need to adjust the hours to ensure that 1am on the 15th trading day (really the 16th on the calendar), comes after 9am on the 15th trading day (which will actually be the 15th on the calendar).
Here's what I've used. It's driving me bananas, because it keeps telling me that there's a syntax error (comma) in the query expression, but I can't understand why?
Sort2: IIf([DELIVERY_HOUR]<8,[DELIVERY_HOUR]+24,[DELIVERY_HOUR])

I am trying to get Average If function to access sql. I have columns Period and Costs_Per_Capita, result should be like like this:
Costs_Per_Capita Period CALCULATED_Period_Avg_Costs
15,505 1 15976.27582
16,368 1 15976.27582
16,037 1 15976.27582
15,995 1 15976.27582
15,000 2 16000
17,000 2 16000
I tried:
SELECT Costs.Costs_Per_Capita, Costs.Period
IIF (Period = 1, (Select AVG(Costs_Per_Capita) From Costs Where Period = 1),
(Select AVG(Costs_Per_Capita) From Costs Where Period = 2)
AS result
FROM Costs;
But get "syntax error (missing operator) in a query expression ..."

I am writing a very complex 'if statement' query expression. I need to create an alias column based on data from two data fields.
Here's the logic:
True: If [PP] = "WG" or "WS" or "WL" and If [GR] > 10 Then "Skilled" or
[GR] Between 6-9 Then "Semi - Skilled" or [GR] <6 Then "Unskilled"
False: "GS"

In this thread:
http://www.access-programmers.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?p=549287#post549287
I had a problem. Now I decided to just make two tables, one with sales for a "passer by" and/or directly to a client without a case/labour costs. And a table for sales in relation to a case with labour costs etc. I guess I still m*ssed up on that part and have to make do with that decision (kind of like I depicted in the photoshopped image).
For invoicenumbers I want to use DDMMYYYYHHMM. When adding that field to the design of a table, how do I go about that? Do I just use a Text field and create an input mask for that? Or do I need to use a number format with a certain input mask? Or would it be wiser just to use the date/time type of field and give it a new inputmask? I guess 000000000000 would be the one for that, right? Although I read the help file I do not know if I should use ;0; behind those first group of zero's or not. Yes it is a mandatory field, but it will fill in itself as soon as a product is typed in in the product/invoice list, with a default value of the current date and time.
I need to brush up my knowledge on the formatting for that so that 28-05-1975 19:55 will be displayed and stored as 280519751955. Or is that also done automatically by using that input mask? Or will that give an error when Date or Time() etc. is used for that field in VBA?
Just a few questions I need some help with, I've been trying some stuff but it really doesn't "stick".
And if anyone has some time, I could really use some general advice/ideas for setting up the invoicing part differently for a new version of the db yet to come in the future.

(named: Invalid Field Definition - Unable to set up cascade update but I have done what the moderator advised and have not been able to fix a very similar problem.
I have planned a database and must adhere to the plan or change it and basically I initially said that I would like to enforce referential integrity to synchronise my tables and I would also like to cascade update and delete to save input time because changes will be automated between table (where fields are connected.).
I have attached a plan I did if that makes the purpose of my database clearer.I have attached my database and have established the relationships* without referential integrity enforced I would like between my tables but don't know how to make them one-to-many relationships nor can I enable cascade update or cascade delete or enforce referential integrity.
I am new to databases (and to this forum) and have been promised by my line manager that I won't have to specialise, I don't think I have created the relationships but they are supposed to be between Vehicle ID and Hire Number, and Customer ID and Hire Number.

I have a Table which has a column that contains a Data (last day of the month: 8/31/2013, 9/30/2013) and also contains a Balance field.
What I am trying to accomplish is a query that will provide me with the total for the last month (Sept), and then also provide me with a Percent break down from a whole balance.
I have the following SQL for it:
SELECT ATB.FC, Sum(ATB.Bal) AS SumOfBal, (select sum([Bal]) from ATB) AS Total, Sum([Bal]/[Total]) AS [Percent]
FROM ATB
GROUP BY ATB.FC, ATB.MMDDYY
HAVING (((ATB.MMDDYY)=Date()-Day(Date())));
Right now, when I run the above, the Sum(ATB.Bal) pulls just the month of September, but the Percent is pulling a percentage of each Sept. Value against the whole Balance for the Year. So, when I sum the percent column to get a total of 100% for the month of September, I am ending up with a number less than 20%.

I've got these expressions in a query to extract parts of an mp3 file full path from a field and just let the name of the song.
exp: Mid([imported];[exp3]-[exp2];Len([imported]))
exp2: InStr([imported];"")-4
exp3: InStrRev([imported];"")
exp4: Left([exp];Len([exp])-4)
"exp4" is the clean name of the song.
Now how can I update my "song name" field (which is empty) to be same as "exp4" . Is it an update query? If so how can i do it?

I have a field created in a query expression
BirthMon: Format([DOB],"mmmm")
I would like to create another field in the query using DLookup to return the value of the BrithMon.
BrithMonthID=DLookUp("MonID","tblListMons","BirthM on = Mon")
This works good if used with an unbound text box on a form, but when entered into a query expressions, an error is returned: cannot find the name 'BirthMon'
Can I used DLookUp in a Query expression to refer to another Query created field?

In my query, I have several results that relate to the same PK overall, and I'd like to concatenate these records into one expression/one field in a form.
Currently my query looks like this;
As you can see, the BandPK/BandFK are repeated where the GenreFK/GenrePK are different. What I'd like to do is concatenate the column named Genres into one field so the BandFK/PK isn't repeated.

I've can do this on excel but don't know how in Access. I'm calculating bonuses. My table has salaries, and my query simply multiples each salary amount by a % to get the bonus amount. But I need to calculate adjustments to the bonuses using the sum total of the bonuses my query calculated:
Salary (from table) Bonus (calc'd by query) Adjustment (to be calced)
100,000 1,000 Sum of total bonuses/salary*4%
90,000 900
How do I capture the total of my calculated bonus column to use to calculate the adjustments in my right-most column?
