Query To Return Records Containing 2 Characters In A Field
Sep 5, 2013
I have a field in Access 2010 called Section Number which generally holds two characters. The characters can be numbers, letters, or a combination. Examples are:
01
X1
KA
40
Sometimes this field holds three characters, such as:
01a
02b
I want to write a query that returns only the Section Numbers that contain two characters. The instances where the field holds three characters are too numerous and changeable to use a parameter that says, for example: not "01a" and not "02b"
Is there a way to write a parameter that means "not Section Numbers of three characters" or "not Section Numbers of more than 2 characters"?

I have a table with Zip CODE field. I uploaded my information to this table form an excel file. There were over 120K rows of data so no way i could do this in excel.
So I found that some of the ZIP codes are either blank or have less than 5 digits.
Can I build a a query with the ZIP code field that will return all zip code records with less than 5 characters or blank. I'd like to repair these zip codes and a update query will be my next step.
I repeat excel is not an option because when I try to sort by the Zip Code column my computer explodes (okay not literally) ....

I want to return the characters to the right of the space but I'm getting back rubbish.
This is the type of data in the field AccountName
Z-Yachting Barcos y Apartamentos S.L 031
Zusi Ltd ST5

And this is the result I want

This is my current formula.

I just can't get my head round this one and can't even think of a keyword phrase to search on!
SELECT CompID, CaseRef, ServicesID, Summary
FROM qryAllStats;
In my query I need to return all records where there are more than 3 instances of field 'ServicesID' .
For instance in the recordset ServicesID 47 occurs 5 times while ServicesID 36 occurs 4 times and all other ServicesIDs occur 3 times or fewer.
I would need to return all of the records with ID 47 and 36. Is this do-able?

I am trying to create a query that returns records whether a field has data or not...
There are three fields in question, SSN, DOB (this is a date field), POB (this is a foreign key representing a state in the query shows the actual state). Now unless the criterion is different then I just need the answer for one I can reproduce.
I would like to do this in the criteria box in the query.
The query pulls from one table, some of the employees in this table have the three fields populated some don't. I would like the query to return all employees...

I am trying to create a query pulling from several tables. I will use the example below to illustrate what I'd like to do.
I have a field called 'Acc_Num', one called 'Stat_Code', and a third called 'Cat_Code'.
Each 'Acc_Num' can have multiple records because there are multiple Stat_Code and Cat_Code values.
What I want to do is isolate just the Acc_Num records where Stat_Code = 1 and Cat_Code equals A1.
I also want to isolate the Acc_num records where the Stat_code = 1 and where Cat_code does not exist.

I'm trying to create a report that's based on a query, and the query has three fields: [PersonName], [PersonDate], [PersonShift]. This table holds records for people that worked on certain days and certain shifts. What I want to do is create a report that gives a graphical calendar display of each day in a month, and on any day that the person has a record (and sometimes there are more than one), I'd like to see just the PersonShift records showing in that day's box.
tblPersons
PersonName PersonDate PersonShift
Jason 4/10/14 FIRST
Jason 4/13/14 FIRST
Jason 4/13/14 SECOND
So if I were to print this report for Jason, I'd get all the days in April laid out like a calendar, and on 4/10/14 you'd see "FIRST" in the box, and on 4/13/14. you'd see FIRST and SECOND in the box. All the other boxes would be blank.how to display the calendar, how to display the dates. I'm able to return records to those boxes by creating 31 separate queries, one for each day of the month, and each query returns records for that day. The queries are added to the report as subreports. It all works beautifully.
The thing is, I'm running 31 queries every time I pull the report. Is there a way to code a single field on a report that will run a SELECT statement on the table using variables that are located in fields elsewhere in the record?
If I have a PersonName field on the header of the report, and I have a PersonDate field in the detail of the report's record, can I create a new field in the detail of that record that runs a SELECT statement on qryPersons, and filters the tblPersons by the PersonName on the header of the report and on PersonDate in the record?
I want a field on a report that runs a SELECT statement on tblPersons, I want the field to return only the PersonShift records for that person based upon the PersonDate. Each of the fields on my report have a CalendarDate field, and I want the SELECT statement to return records where the PersonDate matches the CalendarDate, and again, it should only display PersonShift records.

I need to query a field for any records where this field has less that 10 characters. Any suggestions? The reason is depending on the type of customer the field can be 10 or 11 digits. IF there are less than 10 but not blank they need to be pulled for correction.

Hi all,
May I know some to construct any functions or query string that can track the no. of records that mean certain criteria in the run time.
Basically I want to track the records in a subform (in datasheet view). Should the no. of records is 0, then I can disallow user from saving it onto the table for better record keeping.
Thanks !!

Maybe it's the day's 'brain drain', but I need to set a criteria in a query whereby it will select answers in a field that are a specific number of characters in length.
i.e., answers that are 5 digits long (without knowing any of the digits)

Hello,
I have created a query using the query builder by concatenationg several fields using the expression builder. Once concatenated, the total number of characters is greater than 255, and is therefore truncated. Since this is a query field and not a table field, there must be a way around this limitation. I can't even create the query and dump the results into a memo field because the dump will still only contain 255 char.
I could probably create the query using VBA, which creates a table containg a memo field, which is then populated by a variable containing the concatenated fields, but I would like a simpler solution.
Any ideas on how I can generate a query field that contains more than 255 char? The query is used to populate a report.
Thanks in advance.
Ken

I have over 270,000 records in my database with 4 fields. And for each field I need to make sure they dont go over a certain number of characters for example field1 can't go over 20. Is there a way I can make sure that they don't go over that? When I go to design view and go to the Data Type of each field I change the filed size to 20, but if something is imported into that field that is over 20 characters long will I get a message saying it won't import? Or can I write a query to check the whole field to make sure that nothing is over 20 characters?

I'm trying to create a query to show me records for a given year. The issue I'm having is that each record has (4) dates fields and each record can contain null values. Is it possible to do this in a query with data like the example below?
Field 1 ID (1), Field 2 Date (12/22/2012), Field 3 Date (2/06/2013), Field 3 Date (Null), Field 4 Date (Null)
In this example I would want 2013 data but would need to be able to search any year. I could also have dates in all (4) fields

I have an existing query, created using the query wizard which works just fine - however, I would like to modify it to return only instances where there are 3 or more records appearing.
Essentially, its an employee history report for a particular action done by those employees, which returns all records between two dates as specified by the user. What I would like to do is only show those employees who have had more than three instances of this action in the given date period.
I am thinking along the lines of DCount? but how it would be phrased in the query?

First, I am trying to get a query to return records between a certain date range. In the form I have DateFrom and DateTo unbound text boxes from which faculty select the date range. I know I have done this before, but I cant figure out how to create a field name and write the criteria for the source query in design mode!
I tried [Form]![FormName]![DateFrom]<[Form]![FormName]![DateTo] in the criteria but I can't seem to write a valid field name that doesn't alter the criteria in some way...
Second, in the same form, faculty enter the StudentID for the student they wish to get records for. How do I write the code to show a msgbox when there is no such ID in the event they enter an StudentID incorrectly.

I am trying to write a query that will return records from multiple tables. I currently get an error suggesting I create a subquery or else I get far too many records.
The query is EditAttendanceQuery (I left it in a bit of a state). The fields I need are shown in the query. The records I need are based on the Edit AttendanceQuery (Form). I can get the records I need without the CourseNumber and Section, but it all goes downhill when I include them.

Hi,
I've been given a flat-file database to 'improve'. One field is simply titled 'Room' and refers to a room number in a school. I want to create a MakeTable query that will run through all the records and make a table containing one instance of each room number (for normalizing). Hope that makes sense!
Any help much appreciated,
Steve

I have a field on a report which I am struggling to produce the right query for.
I have a table - tblTillDept which consists of a 4 fields. The first is the PK, which is the number of a till department. The second - fourth fields are names of 3 different branches of the small garden centre I am writing the database for. The values in these fields are the names of the corresponding departments. Not every branch has exactly the same name for each field.
Prior to the report being is run, a small form, frmCentre pops up asking the user to select the Centre they are printing the labels for. They select the name of the branch from a combo box (cboCentre) bound to a field list of tblTillDept. When the report is formatted, the intention is that the value of this combo box selects the field from which the value for the department is taken. I can see that I need to set the control source of this property to some sort of query, but I can't quite work out how to do it.
I've uploaded the database, written in Access 2000, here (http://www.moppy.co.uk/plants.mdb) as it's too big to post as an attachment.

Hi all,
I am having a problem getting my query to work properly. I have read through this query section but it just got me more confused. I know some have used IIF function but it didn't work for me.
here's my code:
SELECT tblEmployee.UserName, tblODF.ODFNumber, tblQueue.Queue, tblStatus.Status, tblODF.ODFScanDate
FROM tblStatus INNER JOIN (tblQueue INNER JOIN (tblEmployee INNER JOIN tblODF ON tblEmployee.EmployeeID = tblODF.EmployeeID) ON tblQueue.QueueID = tblODF.QueueID) ON tblStatus.StatusID = tblODF.StatusID
ORDER BY tblEmployee.UserName, tblStatus.Status, tblODF.ODFScanDate;
I want everything to show even if one of the fields is blank.
Thank you

I have a field created in a query expression
BirthMon: Format([DOB],"mmmm")
I would like to create another field in the query using DLookup to return the value of the BrithMon.
BrithMonthID=DLookUp("MonID","tblListMons","BirthM on = Mon")
This works good if used with an unbound text box on a form, but when entered into a query expressions, an error is returned: cannot find the name 'BirthMon'
Can I used DLookUp in a Query expression to refer to another Query created field?

I have a simple UDF that takes a string and returns a variant, which is an array of strings Example Input "Brick Wall" Return value would be a variant array with first element "Brick" and and second element "Wall" Now I have a table with a field of strings, and I want to make a query that returns all the results from the function, one per line.
So if my input table looks like this
[strField]
"kick the ball"
"return the pass"
my query result should looks like this
[Orig] [new]
"kick the ball" "kick"
"kick the ball" "the"
"kick the ball" "ball"
"return the pass" "return"
"return the pass" "the"
"return the pass" "pass"
Last time I had to do something like this I used VBA exclusively, with ADO objects, but I thought a query based solution would be easier.
With my current data the largest return array size my function returns is 27 elements but I wouldn't want to rely on that number being fixed.

I want to return a value from a separate query and have that show up in a field on my main form. The field name from the query is "Six Month Date" and the query name is "DT6Monthqry". I want to return the value displayed in the"Six Month Date" from the query, matching the CustomerID in the query result to the CustomerID that is being displayed on the main form. The CustomerID is a text field. This is the code I placed in the Control Source property for the field I want to be displayed on the main form:
=DLookUp("[Six Month Date]","DT6Monthqry","CustomerID=" & [CustomerID])
The result of this displays a flashing "Error" in the field, even when I go to a Customer that I know has a result in the "DT6Monthqry".

I have a single table with customer information, one of the fields is a date field "LastContacted".
I'm creating a search form with 2 date fields (txtDate1 & txtDate2) to search a date range of the LastContacted field, and I need to write this into the query that the search form uses.
I have written this using Nz so that it can still return results if the search boxes are left blank:
Between Nz([Forms]![frm_AdvancedSearch]![txtDate1],#01/01/1989#) And Nz([Forms]![frm_AdvancedSearch]![txtDate2],#01/01/2999#)
This seems to work and it returns lines from the table where there is a date entered. However some of the fields in the table have no entry in the LastContacted field. How to code this query so that it also returns lines where the LastContacted field is blank in the table?
I have tried:
like "*" & (Between Nz([Forms]![frm_AdvancedSearch]![txtDate1],#01/01/1989#) And Nz([Forms]![frm_AdvancedSearch]![txtDate2],#01/01/2999#)) & "*"
but this returns errors when I try to run it.
I'm using Access 2010.
