Query Wont Allow Data Update
Mar 17, 2008This should be easy, but I have spent hours on it and can't find the answer. Can anyone see why the query 1qryMaintAssets does not allow a change to or an addition to the data??

View RepliesI want to say update set field1 = field2
But field1's data type is Number and Field2 is Text. (Field1 is fed by a lookup table). Am I doomed to go through the 700 or so by hand, gurus, please?
I would like to run a query and then be able to edit that information. I want the data I change to be put into the table the info was gathered from. Right now when I edit the query data it only saves it there, not on the other table. I tried to do the copy to table but the original table was going to be erased and then written over. What should I do? thanks
View 3 Replies View RelatedHi,
I just created another query, but with this one I cannot change any of the data. What could be the reason?
Thanks
I've sent a post about this before and got some of the answer from 'Dennisk'- thanks.
I want to replace composite keys with a primary. I've just made an autonumber field on one table for my new primary key and already populated it. On the foreign table ive made a new field with 'number' datatype; this field is empty at the moment.
I'm not sure how to update the foriegn tables new field with the primary tables data. I've saw it before and remember it being easy, just can't remember how to do it.
I obviously want the numbers in the primary key field to relate to the correct records in the foriegn table.
Anyone know what the query is or if there's another way?
Thanks:confused:
Access2007- Building a query to handle future input...
I run an update query that does what it is supposed to do and gives the proper values.
THEN I add a one more field to the source with the builder using + that has no data in it yet, the query fails and gives blanks, even though one of the fields in the source has data in it.
I would think that the "no data" field would be considered 0.00 value and be added together to the field that has values giving at least the value of the field with values as a result of the query.
Is there a setting somewhere that I need to change so that the no value and the value would be combined? I am using the builder to combine the values in the query.
Thanks.
How do I get an update query to only copy part of a fields value? For example: The original field has a date in month, day, and year. I only want to update the new field with only the year.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have been spending all my today to fill a combobox dynamically, but have not been able yet.
I have a combobox and a pass-through query in access, which is working fine and fill the details into the combobox via data source. Now what I am planning to do is to update the combobox source as soon as value in a text box changes.
Here is the code I am using, but it is not working:
Dim rs As Recordset
Dim qDef As QueryDef
Set qDef = CurrentDb.QueryDefs("get_data")
qDef.SQL = "SELECT Initial + ' (' + Name + ')' uws FROM EM.dbo.UW" _
& " WHERE lob = '" & addSingleQuotation(Me.CMB_LOB.Value) & "'"
Me.cmbUM.RowSource = qDef.SQL
Me.cmbUM.Requery
I also used Recordset, but did not work:
Set rs = CurrentDb.OpenRecordset("get_data")
Me.cmbUM.RowSource = rs!uws
i'm a Access novice. I have tables with existing data in numerical form, and would like to know how I can use Queries or VBA code to update these values into a new format in a new table. for example the original data might be of race type:
1 - caucasian
2 - african american
3 - hispanic 1
4 - hispanic 2
5 - hispanic 3
6 - other
and i want to regroup these into less types, eg:
1 - caucasian
2 - african american
3 - hispanic
4 - other
how can i achieve this in Access? i know how i can do this conceptually with "if" and "case" statements, but I have no idea how i can do this in Access. I don't want to mess with the original data, so please help with CODE or QUERY examples.
thanks!!
Hi all, I'm so tired of looking... please help me!!
I have an Access Data Access Page based on a query which is not updatable.
The query is based on a many-to-many table (e.g. OfficeProducts with foreign keys for OfficeID and ProductID and an Amount field). The query is not updatable as I have included outer joins to the Office and Product tables to get all their records back.
(I'm not sure if I've done this the best way, but need to be able to list all the possible Products for each Office whether they use them or not.)
I want the user to be able to update the Amount field, so e.g. if it is currently set to 50 to be able to change it to 40, or if it is currently null (as there is no record so far for that OfficeProduct) then to insert a record into OfficeProducts with the OfficeID, ProductID and Amount value entered.
I thought this would be straightforward by creating a new textbox in the same section as the current Amount field, calling it NewAmount and letting the user update this, fire an event trigger to either update or insert into the table, and refresh the query and record on the form/DAP so that Amount shows the newly updated/inserted value.
I have been searching for ages... cannot locate either the best event or events to use for this nor the code to enter!! Please please help!!!!!
(This is actually for a charity helping people suffering from emergencies in developing countries, not OfficeProducts, so your spot in heaven will be reserved if you can help ;) Thanks)

In access Im working with two tables, this is my setup
tableA.documentnr
tableA.revison
tableB.documentnr
tableB.revision
Both tables are filled with data, Table B contains the same kind of data as table A, But tableA has documentnumbers with different revisions (for example revision a,b,c, for each revision a seperate row). Table B might have an identical document, but just one revision (like revision a).
Now I like to append the data of tableA to tableB, except if a revision is similiar to a revision in table A. (There is more metadata involved, but I will do it step by step)
Im not working with primarykey data, becayse in the end result table B will also have multiple (identical)document numbers with different revisions on different rows.
I tried to use the update query but it doenst append the documentnumbers where the revision is not present in table B I attached a image of the tables.
Is it possible for an update query to simply replace all the data in a table's field with the results from a query?
For example, I have Table A with the field Years. This table performs various calculations within based on the field Years.
I would like an update query that simply replaces the Years field data in Table A with a new set of years based on a query's search criteria.
When I run the below query, I get an error saying the query must be updateable- but Im not trying to update the query, rather the Table
I've attached a photo ......
I have a table that is updated from an update query which gets its data from a table, which gets its data from a form. I have set the query to only update the current record, this is done by a macro when the user exits the input box. The problem arises when a user goes to visit past record, I would like it to not overwrite the old data with the new data. If the query was only allowed to ADD data and not overwrite then this would fix the problem!
My SQL code is as follows:
UPDATE [Run Info], [Sieve Weights] SET [Run Info].[315 Tare] = [Sieve Weights]![315 Tare], [Run Info].[250 Tare] = [Sieve Weights]![250 Tare], [Run Info].[200 Tare] = [Sieve Weights]![200 Tare], [Run Info].[160 Tare] = [Sieve Weights]![160 Tare], [Run Info].[100 Tare] = [Sieve Weights]![100 Tare], [Run Info].[75 Tare] = [Sieve Weights]![75 Tare], [Run Info].[50 Tare] = [Sieve Weights]![50 Tare], [Run Info].[BD Tube Tare] = [Sieve Weights]![BD Tube]
WHERE ((([Forms]![1L Input form]![ID No])=[Run Info]![ID No]));
I have an access database with several linked tables (linked to MySQL database) and several local tables. The theory is that if there's ever a connection issue, the device connected to the computer will continue logging data to the local tables. Once a connection is re-established, the linked tables should be updated with all the missing records which appear on the local tables.
I found several possibilities which I outlined below, but I've been asked to investigate whether there's a built in function in access that does this for you and use the other options as a last resort. Does access have any program feature that updates one table with missing data from another table, or will I have to write VBA code to do that? Options I've discovered:
1) Write unmatched query and insert missing data into table.
2) Create a linked table on MySQL that will link to the local tables on access, then compare the records there. The boss isn't happy with those options because he wants to keep the amount of code we add to a minimum. Ultimately, we hope that a program feature that does this is built in to access. If not, I have no problem adding code to do this instead.
I have a database that needs data to be reentered every school term, at the moment i am having to delete selected data fields manually. im looking to create a query so that the data is deleted by running it. The data would be returned to a blank field. I have tried using a delete query but it is asking for the selected table, even though a selected table exists. Using the update query i am faced with updating the query to a typed word however i just want it blank.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running an update query that's based on a select query (that runs some calculations). The update query is updating ALL the rows that should be updated with the information in the select query with data from the final row in the select query, and not on a per ID basis as I think I have it set-up to do. The data looks correct in the update query, but again it's not coming out right.
Here's the SQL for what I've written so far:
UPDATE [Customer_Data Query], Customer_Data INNER JOIN Baseline ON Customer_Data.ID = Baseline.ID SET Baseline.[Unit Hours] = [Customer_Data]![Dur_Days]*[Customer_Data]![Dur_Hours]*[Customer_Data]![Number_Units], Baseline.Availability = [Customer_Data]![Perceived_Avail], Baseline.[Hours Available] = [Customer_Data]![Dur_Days]*[Customer_Data]![Dur_Hours]*[Customer_Data]![Number_Units]*[Customer_Data]![Perceived_Avail],
[Code] ....
I've also tried to force the update to the proper row by adding a criteria based on ID.
Select query, here it is:
SELECT Customer_Data.ID, Customer_Data.Data_Set_Version, Customer_Data.Number_Units, Customer_Data.Perceived_Avail, Customer_Data.MTTR_MTBF, Customer_Data.MT_TR_OR_BF_Hours, Customer_Data.Utilization, Customer_Data.Percent_Scheduled, Customer_Data.Sched_Percent_of_PM, Customer_Data.Sched_PM_Duration, Customer_Data.Sched_CBM_Duration, Customer_Data.Sched_CBM_From_PM, Customer_Data.React_Detect, Customer_Data.React_Rework, Customer_Data.React_False_Alarms,
[Code] ....
I have an update query for tGLCashAccount where it adds a value from another table with the BeginningBalance to arrive at CurrentBalance.
Here's what it looks like in design view:
Field: CurrentBalance
Table: tGLCashAcct
Update to: [tMakeNewCashBal].[TotalPrice]+[tGLCashAcct].[BeginningBalance]
Here is SQL code:
UPDATE tGLCashAcct, tMakeNewCashBal SET tGLCashAcct.CurrentBalance = [tMakeNewCashBal].[TotalPrice]+[tGLCashAcct].[BeginningBalance]
WHERE (((tGLCashAcct.GLCashAcctID)="102"));
I get the error: data type mismatch in criteria expression when I run it.
My membership database has worked fine until recently. Now I cannot save inserted data. On attempted saving "Update or CancelUpdate without AddNew or Edit" appears.
The problem. relates to 2 tables Member and Addresses. PK in the parent table Member is ID. In the Addresses Table the FK is ID. There is a One to One relation between the tables and Referential Integrity is set. I know 1 to 1 is not good but it worked fine in this small database.
Browsing the all of the existing records is fine.
I am trying to run a simple update query to copy data from one column (Addrl1)to another column (Working_Addrl1) within the same file and I can't for the life of me figure it out. Then I need to repeat for addrl2 and addrl3 to working_addrl2 and working_addrl3.
View 7 Replies View RelatedHi Guys,
I have got a query that updates details from one table2 to table1, "Reference" is the primary key and this is what the query uses to determine which need updating.
It all works great but if table2 contains a record in "Reference" that is not in table1 i just want it to ignore it, currently it just seeems to add them.
Any suggestion guys & gals?
Many thanks

Ok, i have a question about update queries.I have two tables (I'll call table 1 and table two for simplicity) and an update query. I want to get some data from table one to table two (via an update query). But in table two there is a field that isn't in table one but i want to add a value to that field via the query. My question is, can i manually put into the query what data to add to a field instead of/aswell as using data from other tables.I hope you understood my questions.Cheers
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to remove random characters from a field. The field [assycode] contains a string similar to say, FGEJBF1 or ABFGYRUKC I want to remove any occurrence of "F1" normally at the end of the string but not always at the end. I used: Like "*f1*" to find the correct records, that worked fine, I then used [Assycode]-" f1" in the update to box, It wants to update 146 records I click ok then it says It couldn't due to a type conversion error. Just messing around I tried adding "F1" to these records using [Assycode]+" f1" and it worked fine. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance

I have a database where two tables contain information that I need to update based on the 4 right most digits of a field. There are only 11 values that will need to be updated out of a large list of values. I'm not quite sure how to set up the update query so that I can do this.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have 2 tables:
"LookupDates" which has
ContractYear
YearStart
YearEnd
and "Staff" which has
Name
StartDate
The tables are not linked in anyway as the LookupDates table is used for referencing.
What I want to be able to do is add another column to the staff table that shows what contract year they started in.
I have tried DLookUp but I have read that you cant use update queries with DLookup in the way that I want to...
DLookup("[ContractYear]", "LookupDates", "[StartDate] Between [YearStart] And [YearEnd]
If I create a form and cycle through the records I can get the DLookup function to work via VBA but this isn't very practical
Can anyone help with this problem?
P.S. I didn't put this post in the queries forum as I think it falls under the General section.
Thanks for any help
I have an Access file with one data table and several linked (read only) tables from a mainframe database. I run an Append Query to import certain data from the linked tables into my data table. Periodically the data in certain fields in the linked tables will change. I want to refresh my local data to reflect this. So I tried to write an Update Query, but it keeps telling me that "The Operations is not an updatable query". I assume this is because the linked tables are read only even though I am trying to update from the linked tables to my local data table. So I am not trying to modify the read only tables.
Assuming I am correct, what is the best way to accomplish my need to update certain fields in my data table with the information on the linked tables?
Thanks for your help.

Since this is not an updatable query, how can I update another table with this calculated dollar amount?
