Hi, this is my first post here.
My question is this: I am creating a database for a student survey. Some of the questions may have multiple answers.
For instance, question 2 reads:
"What location/time are you taking courses (select all that apply)"
and the possible answers are:
1)Daytime/Oakland
2)Evening/Oakland
3)Saturday College
4)BC
- Where a student could be taking classes at multiple locations or times. I am completely lost as to how to set this up. I have tried to set the properties for the field on the form to accept multiple responses, but of course, these do not save to the table and so it's completely useless.
Thank you in advance for your help!!!

Hi,
I currently have an employee database - all info is currently in one table.
I am wanting to create a search box in my form which allows me to search for multiple bits of information. ie. I would like to be able to type in either a first name, surname, full name, or employee id number (for example), press enter, and for it to display the results (either by going to the first that it finds, and me then clicking find next, or by displaying all found in an index so that you double click the one that you want - i am not too fussed... the main issue is getting the search box to look in multiple fields).
I currently have the following code:
Private Sub cmdFind_Click()
DoCmd.ShowAllRecords
DoCmd.GoToControl ("Surname")
DoCmd.FindRecord Me!txtIDFind
'If FindRecord = True Then
'Exit Sub
'End If
DoCmd.GoToControl ("EIN")
DoCmd.FindRecord Me!txtIDFind
'If FindRecord = True Then
'Exit Sub
'End If
DoCmd.GoToControl ("forename")
DoCmd.FindRecord Me!txtIDFind
End Sub
(ignore the notes - they were trial and error for something else).
Currently, when i press find, this code will find the first of anything - ie i time in Frank and the first Frank will appear (unless someones surname begins with Frank). What i can't seem to do is get it to progress to the next record if i press a find next button.
I have also tried the following code, but it only works if i put in an EIN number:
Private Sub Findall_Click()
DoCmd.ShowAllRecords
DoCmd.GoToControl ("ein")
DoCmd.FindRecord Me!txtIDFind, acStart, acAll, True
Any thoughts? I think i'm probably looking at this in completely the wrong way.
Oh, also i am quite new to VB, so please forgive any silly questions that i am likely to ask!
Kind regards,
Fergus.

I have a button with this code attached
Dim SearchStr2 As String
SearchStr = "[PROTECHNIC_NUMBER] = " & "'" & Forms![FRMPATIENT]![Frm_ICP_Select].Form![Protechnic_Number] & "'" _
And "[ICP_Code]" = Forms![FRMPATIENT]![Frm_ICP_Select].Form![ICP_Code]
DoCmd.OpenForm "FRMASSESMENTHEAD", acNormal
Forms!FRMASSESMENTHEAD.Filter = SearchStr
Forms!FRMASSESMENTHEAD.FilterOn = True
If the button is clicked it should open the FRMASSESMENTHEAD form where the Protechnic Number (which is a text field) and the ICP Code(which is numeric) is the same as the ones on the current subform.
It works great if just using one of the criteria but when i put the and command in and then add the second criteria i get an erroer message saying
Run-time error '13':
Type mismatch
hope this makes sense and can anyone help

Is there a way to search multiple tables for a record. I have 4 tables, each containing a different product. In each table are lists of serial numbers (primary key) and other information (ship_to, sales_order_number,etc.) for the product. I want to be able to enter a serial number and display the information related to that serial number. Not all fields are the same for each table. Is this possible? I would greatly appreciate any help!!

Ok folks I have what is proving to be a doozy for me.
I have a multiple table database related fields in each one are:
Procedure
Description
Payable Amount
I am trying to find a way to search particular tables for particular Procedures. My output must include fields: Procedure, Description, Payable Amount. I have tried a form but I would have to included way too many text boxes to accompish what I am looking for. If possible I would like to have three text boxes if a form is possible. I would start the search and my output would end up in the text boxes below:
Procedure, Description, Payable Amount
With of course some sort of Identifier of the table that was selected to search in.
Can anyone help me?

Ok,
I have three tables that are named different, but have the same column names, but different data in them. The data in each table is linked by a master table that has a primary key.
What I need is a way to make a form with a box where I can search on a value that could be in any of the three tables and then the associted information from the site will display in the above boxes.
(Site Master Table contains all site information and the primary key)
(The three tables are sales order information. Stage Only table, Install table, and srop ship table)
Any ideas?

i have created a form for my database where i intend to give the user the option of searhing my more than one criteria but not all.
i have used a system of combo boxes for the user to enter thier choises leaving the combobox blank for any criteria they dont know.
the user then clicks th button to open the query
in the query i have set the criteria for the fields to equall the related combo bo in the form.
however if the comboboy is left blank (0 or null) the query looks for a record where that field is also null. as a result it wont return any records.
an example
on the table tblFault there is the record
FaultID; 7
Computer id; 2
Name; c
Room-ID; it1
Date Of Fault; 05/06/07
on the form the user enters the following values into the combobox
FaultID; 7
ComputerID;
Nme; c
Room-ID; it1
Date of Fault 05/06/07
the query returns no records insead of the record above.
this is because it is looking for a record in the table where the Computer-ID field contains a null value.
is ther a way to ignore the chriteria if the combobox contains a null value????
i have tried to use vb to convert all null values to be "Like "*"" but it keeps returning a type missmatch error but still changes to combo box value to ; Like .

Hi,
Not sure where to put this, but as I want the information to be shown in form view, I guess this is the bext place to start.
In breif, I have created a database, in which infomation on machinery is held.
The problem I am having (atm), is I have to create a function, which I want to be presented in form form, where by each item can be searched by it's RequestID (unique) or the customer who owns it, so that its current location can be attached (or viewed).
I'm not sure whether i've worded this well, so to sumerise:
I need a form with 3 fields, RequestID, Customer and Location.
Where by I input the RequestID, which brings up the Customer and Location, or input Customer which brings up the RequestID and Location (obviously there will be mulitple results from Customer search).
Again, I hope I haven't confused anyone because it's pretty simple what i'm trying to say, but....
Thanks, Ben

OK - I'm kinda new to all this stuff (as you're about to find out from my question).
I've got a page with a search form, where visitors enter a search term. That page uses GET to pass the variable to the results page. The SQL on the results page is pretty simple, it just takes the variable from the URL and filters for records:
WHERE columnname CONTAINS
Request.QueryString("passedvariable")
So that all works fine - except that it does not allow for complex searches. If someone searches for 'fish' then that works fine. If someone searches for 'fish and food' then the search looks for "fish and food" somewhere in the record, rather than looking for both of those terms in a record.
Now, I'm guessing that there's no simple solution for who to get this to work, but I'm hoping that someone can help me out and at least point me in the right direction. I'd be happy to post additional code if you need it - but I don't even know what else to post!
Thanks in advance.

I have a form where a user enters data. One of the things the user enters is a "lot size". I need this lot size field to be checked against a query in the database to determine if the quantity is acceptable or not.
The order number in this query is in certain cases missing a leading zero, so I need to truncate this from the user entered form field. Finally I want the user to be notified if they are trying to exceed the lot size in the query. My code is as follows:
Code:
Public Function RemoveFirstChar(RemFstChar As String) As String
Dim TempString As String
TempString = RemFstChar
If Left(RemFstChar, 1) = "0" Then
If Len(RemFstChar) > 1 Then
TempString = Right(RemFstChar, Len(RemFstChar) - 1)
End If
End If
[code]....

I am using 2010 and have a bound field called Policyholder ID number in a table called Policy Information. I would like to calculate how old a person is by using the identity number which is 13 digits (South African ID) and the format is as follows - 7009215069084. Using the first 6 digits this person was born on 21 Sept 1970 and is 42 years old ( Current year of 2012 minus year of birth of 1970 = 42)
How I can include a calculated field so once I type in the identity number the age of the person reflects in a field called Current Age.

Hi. Please do not lecture me on database normalization, as this truly is not in my control.
I have 2 dozen tables, each with 13 fields. All of the field names exist in at least 12 of the tables. And all tables share a ssn field where values are common.(Confused yet? Sorry, if you are...)
If I design a query showing all 2 dozen tables and their fields...
Can I set up a query criteria where I enter the requested ssn and then the required field name and have the result show the values of all the fields with that name, among the ones of the 2 dozen tables where that field name exists? (for that specified ssn)
If I am only as clear as mud, please let me know, and I will try again.
Or, by asking if I can search for field values querying by field name, am I any clearer?

As mentioned before on a different topic I am building a database to sort through publication authors. I currently have the table sorted in a way that only the main author is listed for the 3000 records. Now I need a way to remove duplicate entries on a new table. Each entry is a different publication. Each record has a DOI code that is unique and an author which might be a duplicate. I want a new table listed by author once and a new field that list all of the DOI numbers for that author.
I know how to do a query to show only the unique names, but how to I also get the database to combine the records that share the same author.?

1. John

3. Tim
4. Jessica
I want to click on one of the names and have a form pop up on the same screen that lists the persons contact info. If I had a table like listed below, could the info auto populate on a separate form.
[ID] [Name] [Number] [Address]
1. John 456-4567 123 Elm Rd.
2.
I want the Form to pop up and show...
Name: John

I currently have a database set up with three basic forms:
Form 1 = Main menu with options to go to Form 2 and Form 3
Form 2 = Employee information form which includes email address
Form 3 = Employee document upload form
My goal is once the Employee is registered in Form 2 they can then upload a document in Form 3. When they upload this document and fill out other parameters Including their bosses name (which is captured as a record in Form 2) they click "Submit Form." I would like for this submit form button to populate an email that is updated to send to the selected "Bosses name"
Currently on the Submit form button I have:
Private Sub Submit_Record_Click()
DoCmd.SendObject _
, _
, _
, _
"email .com", _ <-- this is what I want to autopopulate with the correct persons email (as well as their name below)
, _
, _
"***A new Lab Report has been submitted for your review***", _
"Bosses name," & vbCrLf & vbCrLf & vbCrLf & "Please log into the Report Database and review the latest pending report. If you have any questions please contact the sender." & vbCrLf & vbCrLf & "This is an automated response generated from Microsoft Access." & vbCrLf & vbCrLf & vbCrLf & "Sincerely," & vbCrLf & "ESBU Lab Report Database", _

Im nearly finished creating my first real production database, its pretty exciting! Theres a few things that I need to accomplish to consider it 100% working and im wondering if anyone has any input on the following matters:
1) Users import their data via an excel spreadsheet. Its all done behind the scenes. One routine pulls in information about servers from an excel spreadsheet and after formatting it via queries, puts it in the main table. The spreadsheet in question starts with the servername cell. On the spreadsheet, the first row contains the name of the server, but the second and subsequent rows contain blank space in the servername column, but imply that the rest of the information is for the various connections associated with that server listed above... IE:
Column "ServerName"
Row1: Server1 IP address Switch Etc
Row2: <blank> IP address Switch Etc
Row3: Server2 IP address Switch Etc
Row4: <blank> IP address Switch Etc
Row5: <blank> IP address Switch Etc
Row6: Server3 IP address Switch Etc
and so on and so on...
What im wondering, is if its possible to fill in the blank spots with the cell above the records that start blank? (to populate the record with its respective server). Any input on methods to accomplish this would be appreciated.
2) Is there a way to attach code to the different buttons on the record selector? For tracking purposes, everything that my users do is stored in a seperate table. The only thing I cant seem to track is when users enter a record via the main data entry form. Automated tasks are no problem, but I cant seem to find a method to attach code to, say, the next record button on the default record selector.
3) I have a few queries that collectively import data from excel. When I do this, I remove confirmation messages so that users dont have to click through a sea of 'OK's. Im wondering if theres a way to count how many records get pulled in from an import, seperate which were good and which were bad, and simply pop up a message box stating that X records were imported succesfully, and X were not due to whatever reason.
4) Is there a way to sort text as if it were a number? I have a few fields that need to be text format, but contain numbers most of the time. The sorts always put 1 above 10, 9, 8, 7, etc, and id like to either find a way to make a query that changes all single digit numbers to double digit numbers or simply sort it in a numerical format.
5) What considerations should I take into account when it comes to the amount of data that access 2003 databases can effectively store and use? Ive heard that access can effectively handle 32000 records or something to that effect. Over that, what will I be dealing with? Slow performance? A complete roadblock?
I realize that there are a lot of questions here, and by no means wish to have my work done for me. Id very greatly appreciate any feedback that anyone wishes to give 8) Even if you dont want to code routines for me, thats fine.. I actually enjoy figuring this stuff out on my own, and a simple nudge in the right direction would suffice.
Thank you so very much!

I been trying to figure out how to do this for some time now. But nobody seems to be able to know the method. I have searched the message board and tried the techniques that were suggested but none of them seem to work effective. Here is the problem:
All I want is a 2 textboxes on a form that where a user can put in the parameters for a query. The users clicks on the generate report button and the report pulls the textboxes's data as the parameters data. Report opens and its done. Every time I try this I get the query still asking for the parameters. Is there a sample database that someone can point me to that is using this method for the parameters. The Microsoft website has nothing pertaining to this matter. Only reason I am trying to use this is to stop people from putting in the wrong parameter information and it would look better then that generic parameter box that pops up.
Sorry to be a pain in the you know what!

I just have a question, is there anyway to create a standalone ms access 2003 file. I want to be able to create a ms access db that has forms and certain reports.
I have a client who needs this ms access file to distributable to his clients (who can use it without having ms access file). Also he him self can make changes, to the forms, etc. Without any programming knowledge, change the look of the forms, add queries, etc. And be able to send the updated version of the ms access file to his cleint.
Can this be done? I have suggested using a vb frontend & and ms access as a backend, but he would have to pay someone to make changes, add reports, etc. And he wouldn't be able to do it him self becuase of lack of programming knowledge, he only has medium knowledgable of Ms Access.
So can this be done, is there a sdk i can use?
Thanks,
will

At work I have been tasked with a few Access based problems and one of which is making one of their handwritten feedback forms be input on Access so then responses can be graphed and analysed.
Is it possible to give written answers a number so they can be graphed.
For example.
Question 1 - Give me an example questions?
Answers:
1. Yes
2. No
3. Unsure
So you can see how many have each one when you graph the results. As I have it created with foreign keys at the moment it is displaying the text when I do the queries.
Also... is it possible to make a button so an interactive pdf report can be sent to all the selected user's email addresses?
