Security - Admins Change Another Users Password

If a user puts a password in for themselves, is there any way an Admins person can see it, or change it?

Hi :)
I'm currently in the process of testing security before shipping my database off. I have read the access security faq, but I'm not sure which option to go for. The main factor that makes me doubt, is that the db will be sent to locations that I will not be able to physically get to myself. I am hoping that some of you have some experience on dealing with remote installations of your databases.
Option 1:
Use one workgroup file
make a user_admin user which is NOT member of the admins group
rename the workgroup file to an mdb, open it and give the user_admin permissions to edit the user and group table
The problem with this approach is that the user_admin can assign any user to the admins group, which basically defeats the whole purpose of this option really.
Option 2:
Use two workgroup files (development/securing and distribution)
make the user_admin a member of the Admins group in the distribution file
As the Admins group is different in the distribution workgroup file, it is impossible to change any database object. The only problem is if something were to go wrong (which I think is highly unlikely :D ) it might be good to be able to manually walk the user through fixing the problem, and to do that it is likely that some database object needs changing, therefore needing an admin login...
comments or suggestions welcome :)
Thanks again :)
Hi
I'm currently designing a small database which will be distributed to users most probably using the access2007 runtime. I would like to be able to ship the database with a default username and password. Is this possible in acces 2007 ?
If it is possible, how would I go about enabling individual users to change the default username/password and set up a username/password of their choice ?
I am not sure how to do this. I am trying to do up a password form where there is a user name and a password. There will only be 5 user names, one being an admin. I seen it in the Running Microsoft Access 2000 book (it's just a reference manual) but could not figure it out.

i need some more help.
I have an access application which has 6 different forms. The application will be accessed by 10-12 people. some can have an access to to all the forms and some may have an access to a few of them. How can I set up the password security for the users at application and form level?
I also want to capture the audit trail when the user users edit form and makes changes to a record.
I would apprecaite help on this one.

I am trying to set up a password on a for different users to have to enter pins to enter data. When a user selects his/her name from the combo box the next field will be something like pin. When they enter the corresponding pin this will allow them to edit and start or continue (if they left) fill out the rest of this form.
The reason being this way is that if one of them goes back to a previous record done by another user (which I want them to be able to view) they can view it but cannot edit it because they do not have the users pin (or password). Is this able to be done, only allowed to edit or create a new record if you enter your pin every time.
Hello,
I have a db that I want to password, so that anyone pressing either F11 or holding shift down at the start, will be prompted with a password.
.....But, I want the user to be able to see the start-up form and associated forms without having to enter a password.
Is this something that is possible to do in Access97?
I have searched the forum for an answer, but can't find anything.
Thanks, Steve.
Dear Guru,
I have an issue which having read some previous threads may not be resolved simply. My database is password protected.
The password (presumably) is preventing the mailmerge from connecting the deata with the template. There is not even a password request shown. Is there any way that this can be overcome. There are a number of mailmerges but all are pulled from the same data query, can i unprotect this query only??
After convincing my boss that the dbase can easily run securely, your help will be very much appreciated.

I already have created & run an Access database for around 12 users. I now am looking to create a database that can have at least 30 users. Each one with a unique user ID & password (Using a security file ".mdw") Users log into a front end on a network environment. Now...My question...Is 30 to large of a user base for Access in a network environment??
View 6 Replies View RelatedI run a school library database (Access 2003) and want to set up a password logon system so that different users can get at different parts of the program - e.g. Administrator (everything), Librarian (can add and delete records but not change the database design), Student (can only access certain areas, read only).
I've tried using the security wizard to set this up, which seems OK until you then open the database again. I would expect to then get some sort of log-on screen next time I open the database, but instead it opens normally, but then won't let me do anything because I "don't have permission". I had to restore a back-up copy.
I must be missing something obvious here. Is there a place to look for instructions? Couldn't find anything useful in the help screens.

Does anyone have any sample code or a sample database?
I'm looking for a login form that has security level and passwords.
thanx
I have to make it so user group cannot modify/update/delete data in tables, but con do the same in forms. Yet if I uncheck those in 'permissions' it's not possible to change anything forms either
For some reasons management doesn't want tables to be in diff database
The problem occurs on a WinXP machine with Access 97.
When Access is run as a Power User everything works fine but when it runs under a user account that is a standard "User" non of the wizards function properly.
By changing some file permissions I can get the control, form and report wizards to work but the Import Data wizard still fails.
I'm sure this is a permissions issue and can be fixed by changing the security settings for some registry keys or files, but have no idea which ones.
Thanks in advance for any help.
I am receiving an unexpected message when a user tries to launch a form that the user does not have permission for via the Access Security-Permissions setting that I have configured.
I am trying to set my Access db up so that Guest users can only access 2 Forms - the Switchboard and the Main form. There is a Maintenance Form and I don't want Guest users having access to it.
I have configured Security and created a Group named Guestgrp. I have also created a user named Guest that is assigned to the Users and Guestgrp groups.
The Users group is currently set up with NO permission for any form.
Here are the Guestgrp permissions for the forms, db and tables
The following forms have Open/Run and Read Design permission
Switchboard
MainForm
The following forms have NO Permissions selected
Maintenance Form
The database permission is set to Open/Run
Table permissions
The Guest group has Read Design and Read Data permission for all tables
so here is what happens...............
My Guest user can log in and launch the Switchboard form and can launch the Main Form from the switchboard.
BUT......................
When my Guest user clicks on the Switchboard button for the Maintenance Form, the following message pops up:
There was an error executing the command.
Is this the normal way for Access to indicate that the user does NOT have permission to access a form? I am guessing/hoping that it isn't and if configured properly there would be a message indicating that permission is denied or something of that nature.
If anyone has any comments, suggestions on the error in my ways, I appreciate any comments/suggestions/clarifications.
Thanks
Hi,
I'm building a DB where I have multiple users. I would like to have all data in 1 table but only give access to records created by the individual user. Is this possible?
Alternatively, if each user has it's own table, how can I report on the sum of all tables.
Cheers,
Rene
I am using the sample security db that has been posted on previous threads does anyone know how to add a change password button to it, any help would be appreciated.

I want my text box to display a social security number like this: "*****6789". 5 asterisks and last four numerals displayed. I am familiar with the "Password" Input mask but I think it only allows the entire field to be masked. Can I make a custom mask like this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedPreviously posted in General but got no response so decided to move to forms area.
I want to hide as many toolbar options/menus as I can on startup, so the user is very limited as to what they can do with the database.
I am using the multiuser logon option so each user has their own user name and password.
By hiding the menu, it also locks out the option to change their password.
I want to give users the ability to load the User and Group accounts/change logon screen only.
What I was thinking was calling this option from a command button on a form.
ie, Once clicked, it takes you to the generic Change Logon screen with the need for the menus to be enabled.
Can this be done?
If not, is there an alternative.
Thanks

So I have a login system established with loginID, passwords, and different user types. I also have a User Change Password form. However, this form only allows the user to change their password to something new. Also, for some reason the form only allows the first user in the table (ID#1) to be changed regardless of who is logged in. I was using an embedded Macro. I need to be able to have the old password entered and verified before the password can be changed to something new.

Exit Sub

[Code] ....
But it doesnt change the password....
All my users have a shortcut on there computer to the database.
What I like to do is create a new shortcut.
But I don't want to go to each users desk and change the old one to to new one.
There should be someway that you can do a global change.
Anybody have an idea how this can be done?
Is there any way that i can get the database password to change after a certain period of time?
