Split A Database- Where's The Front End?
Jul 11, 2006
Hi,
as an attempt to improve database performance, I have split a MS Access 2003 database. I have successfully split the database and saved the backend onto the server. My question is, where is the front end. or do I have to create it?
Cheers.

I want to create a split-database. I want the entries made on the front-end to update into a combined table in the back-end.
Back-end: One table with everyones entry
Front-end: Multiple forms that feed into the back-end.
When person A accesses his front-end form, he can only see his entries.
When person B accesses his front-end form, he can only see his entries.
When manager A wants to look at the back-end, he can see everyones entry in one table.

I have a 2007 back-end db on a network share and around 15 regular users who access it through their own front-end db/interface. One user on Windows 7 is able to launch and use his front-end copy fine except when he goes to launch one form for data entry.
This form clocks and freezes the entire application. I sat with him and was able to determine that the issue is that the form_load code is never running. He clicks on the button to launch the form (done in vba) and the code never runs. If he opens the form in design view first then changes to form view, the code runs fine and there are no issues. This is his present work-around, but I had to give him an unlocked FE copy to pull it off (not ideal!).
I tried this with him on different PCs, with different front-end copies, and even in the back-end copy. Same result each time. None of the other users have this issue, and he can replicate this issue on different PCs. I'm at a loss for what might be causing this since it really seems so user-specific.

I have designed a split database( with back end and front end), I am just wondering what would be the best way to put a password for both of the back and front end.

So a while back I created a database which I use to keep track of my companies large list of products. It is very simple only 3 tables, 1 query and 1 form. After running into a problem with copying and pasting updates on each computer in the office I decided to split the database on a network drive. This worked for a bit, however I had to add new fields and modify the form, which corrupted the file. Luckily I had a backup before the split.
As far as I could tell all I had to do was modify the backend file and make a new front end. However it seems like it is not as easy as I thought it would be. How do you modify a split database without corrupting the files or using a non-split copy?

I have built an Access 2010 split database on my computer and it functions as built. My next step was to copy it to the server at work and test it. I discovered the tables had to be re-linked and so did that. As I have read in the Access World Forums in order to function as a multi-user database a copy of the front end must be placed on the individual workstation with the back end residing on the server, however the hyperlinks in the back end will not function when the copy on the workstation is run. I simply get an unable to open "filename" error pop-up. I can run the server copy and everything functions as built. I know that the hyperlinks require all the files to be in the same folder (relative vs. absolute), but if the back end contains all the hyperlinks why does the location of the front end seem to affect the operation of the back end?

I split my database. Then got the bright idea to rename them. Now when I launch the front end (which contains the forms, etc.), I get a message saying that it can't find my backed. I've tried renaming the back end back to its original name, but its still not working.
What is the best way to fix this situation? I was thinking about opening the front end, and re-importing the tables from the back end, or, breaking the links between the front end and back end. If I re-import, should I move stuff from the front end to the back end or vice versa?
Thank you in advance for your help.

I have a database that I've split and have deployed to 7 persons.
The thing is, I have three (3) forms:
Form 1
Form 2
Form 3
...that require changing a portion of a line in each form's respective VBA codes. I need to change the directories to where an excel workbook is stored after exporting, and another is where same excel is moved to after being uploaded.
At the moment, during deployment I have to manually change the directories.
I was thinking of maybe a pop-up form with four (4) fields that allows the user to select his/her name at the start-up of their frontend app, and paste the directories in the other text boxes provided.
This information will then be used to replace the directories in the VBA.
If I were to make changes and have to redeploy, I would have to do everything manually again.

Hi there
I have an application that I run in our business.
Everytime I make changes to the code I have to export all the tables from the original into the latest version of the database with the new code.
This is a pain and makes updates time consumming and prone to error.
Is the soloution to have 2 databases. One with the tables and the other with the code (forms), & reports ect
If so, how do I access tables in the 'tables' database from the 'front end' database??
Thanks in advance

The back end being placed on a server with a path of type servernamefolder..I have used the Linked Table Manager to point to the tables server name folderfilename.accdb
but in doing this I get a message Windows cannot access servernamefolder..is this to do Network Rights on the server that I don't have permission to access the server and folder.

I have a split database. When the front end db is updated, i am attempting to delete the end users copy and replace with the updated version.
I have gotten as far as being able to open Database A, Open Database B with A and Close Database A, but it will not let me delete Database A from B because the procedure originated from Database A.

Hi,
I created a database in Microsoft Access and then upsized it to SQL Server afterwards.
I now need to add a new column to a table in the database. So I added the new column in SQL Server using ALTER TABLE command. This column is a foreign key which has an associated parent key in another table which contains a description of the column.
e.g.
Main_Table
Case_ID Foreign_Key_Field_ID
1234 78
New_Foreign_Key_Table
Foreign_Key_Field_ID Foreign_Key_Field_Desc
78 Describes the ID 78
I also setup a CONSTRAINTREFERENCE between the fields in these 2 tables.
I then relinked my tables using the Linked Table Manager to pick up the change to the table I altered (Main_Table). I also linked to the new table I created (New_Foreign_Key_Table).
My problem:
In Access if I create a new table I can select the lookup value for a field in the Table Design view Lookup tab. However, I altered my table in SQL Server and then linked to it again to pick up the change. Now when I view the linked table in Access it does not have any lookup value AND it's not possible to change this for a linked table.
Is there some piece of SQL I can use in SQL Server to change the lookup value for the field in my table OR have I approached this the wrong way. Should I have modified the local table in Access and upsized it again?
Otherwise if I select all values from my Main_Table in a form it displays the Foreign_Key_Field_ID instead of the Foreign_Key_Field_Desc because the lookup value has not been set to Foreign_Key_Field_Desc
This posting is a bit long - I hope it makes sense.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks

I've prepared a front end database with forms that allow data to be keyed into linked tables to my main databse.
However, currently the front end database only allows 1 user to do it at 1 time and when another user tries to open the file, an error "The Database Has Been Placed in a State by User on Machine That Prevents It From Being Opened or Locked'
Is there anyway to allow multiple users to use the front end database at the same time?

I have been working on quite a few multi user Access projects in the past few months with a backend and a front end which has linked tables.
I would like to know if there is any way to find out the source of a table linked to the front end and where would its location be on the network.

I have a split db that has been in use for a few years by about 12 people. The front end is compiled into an accde file.
Ocasionally a user (randomly) might get an error message "Microsoft has detected that this database is in an inconsistent state...." when closing the db and when that happens, a copy of the front end is automatically placed on their desktop.
This front end is always deleted and the original front end continues to work just fine afterwards.
Why are my users getting this error message? Why is the front end automatically copied onto their desktops?

Using Dropbox to host a split database. Ulimately I would like to create a run version for users with the back end held in a drop box directory.
As an unsplit database everything is working fine on dropbox records are saved in a timely manner and great.
Once I split to FE /BE only some records are saved on the BE and some are dropped. Was getting conflicted copies of Back end but manged to stop this happening but the records were noit on either copy.
Gave each user their own FE (on a drop box directory) linking to a BE in a sub directory on the same dropbox.
The key issue is that not all users have access and I don't want them to get into code so want to aim towards a run version.

I have a Database that has been split into two.
Back-end for all the data.
Front end for all the forms and queries.
The front end has been saved in a accde format and distributed to 20+ users. They have all saved this onto there computers and this is used as an application. The users complete a form on a weekly basis on the application and then save. This then saves into the back end.For some reason I have noticed that a few users submission randomly do not save. For the life of me I cannot understand why.All users have saved them into the back end in the past but every now and then submission for users do not save.
