Front End DB Error - Back End File Path Not Valid
Dec 7, 2011I have recently created a db for a large Printing operation in our company. Previously, the process was all paper-based and extremely inefficient, so obviously this is a huge step in the right direction.
Upon completing the db and providing a demo to the staff, I saved a copy to a shared folder on the network for them to access (.accdb file). We've done this with other dbs before, but with smaller groups (3-4 people). With this db, since there will be anywhere up to 15 people that may want to access it at the same time, the db started crashing during the first phase of pilot testing this week.
I did some more research and found that the db should be split.the users can't open the db anymore.I have a Printing Services shared drive in which created an "Administrator" folder for the back-end (the front-end is in the same location as that folder). When I split the db, I select the back-end location to be within the Administrator folder.
TrackerAdministrator OnlyOS Tracker_be.accdb" is not a valid path. Make sure that the path name is spelled correctly and that you are connected to the server on which the file resides.I know that the file path is valid, b/c I selected it specifically when using the wizard to create it, and I know that the staff have access to the shared drive as they had to open it in order to gain access to the front-end. Plus, it's working for me when I try to open it, just not the others.

Jun 10, 2015I am using Access 2010 in a split database. The intent is to place the back end and associated linked files on a server and the front end on work stations for each user. The typical user will just be searching for information in the database not altering it. My current code re-links the tables once the path is known i.e. I have to hard code it into the global constant. Is there a way in VBA or utilizing VBA to read/write to an ini file (for example) that the UNC path would automatically be updated to a global constant in my current code that can be updated automatically based on where the back end is installed.

General :: Split Database With Not Valid Path
Nov 6, 2013I am attempting to split an Access 2007 database. My company has two locations. From my location we are remote connecting into the server. While down there they are connecting directly. When I split the database, people in my location can use it fine. When people down there use it, they get a not valid path error.
This is because the network drives are mapped differently. I have been reading that the solution is to use the UNC for the back end file path.

Aug 30, 2005I have done the mistake of not keeping a backup, what I did is split my database file access and then created my mde file, I need to change some data on my tables, but I get the msg that I cant edit a linked table, is there a way that I could put things back the way it was, also this path that was created is it possible to change for future purposes (I might have to move the dir into a different path)

Split Database Back End On FTP Or Web Server
Jul 12, 2007Hi, I am not sure where to put this thread hopefully someone here can help me.
I have spent a good deal of time developing a very effective access database for a client. It is split into a front end and back end and connected using the Linked Table Manager when necessary.
The front end is quite loaded with queries, reports, forms, macros etc and the back end simply has the tables.
The front end is about 15 mb and the back about 8 mb.
Current set up is a small workgroup network with about 4 -5 consecutive users at any one given time.
I am looking for some advice on how to set up or facilitate getting the backend on the internet so anyone with a front end can access it outside of the LAN.
Today I set up an account with WebDrive which can connect to and assign a drive letter on your pc to any FTP, HTTP site.
I made the connection with WebDrive and using the linked table manager successfully linked the tables on my local machine to the back end on the FTP server - and actually ran the database at a pretty good rate.
I noticed however that it was downloading the backend to my local pc and once I closed the (a) form it was uploading the data back to the server? Very slow and often threw errors.
This of course is not what I wanted. Has anyone heard of doing this? Any work arounds or setting params would be greatly appreciated.
I have been told to create the DB in ASP but I do not have any idea on how to do that whatsoever...
Any advice or insight would be awesome!

Split Database Back End Password
Sep 24, 2010I have a database already split and I wanted to put a password on the back end. When I open up the front end and try to navigate through the forms it says "Not a valid password".Is there somewhere I need to go / something I need to do to link up the two now that a password has been created?

If I use FileCopy I get a message that the BACK-END database has not been found.Obviously I could 'unlink' the BACK-END, copy it and 're-link' it..Is it possible to copy the BACK-END tables(not just the links) into the FRONT-END and get at them that way?

Jun 25, 2015I have a split database. I have secured the mde sufficiently but I need to secure the back end so that no one could link to tables in it. If I introduce a password to the back end is this going to require those using front end to supply the password? If not then this could be good solution.
As the database is on the network drive, is there any other way to prevent people to link to the db? Can I hide the db in the network drive? Or should I hide tables in the BE. Should these still be available to be linked?

I'm about to move to a back end / front end system, from a single database file. Before I do so, I want to make sure I have all bases covered so to speak.
My back end file will reside on a server. I am aware that path names are sometimes changed by network administrators without warning.
From tests, I notice that, if the path to the back end can't be found, one cannot open the front end database file at all (Access 2003).
My question is: if my back end file gets moved, or the path changed, how can I get into my front end file to update the linked tables.

In my database i have a mail merge on a button click which creates a new merged word document. I then need a way of when the user saves the document in word, bringing back the file path and putting it in a table called tblHistory with the correct customer ID in there too.

After running into a problem with copying and pasting updates on each computer in the office I decided to split the database on a network drive. This worked for a bit, however I had to add new fields and modify the form, which corrupted the file. Luckily I had a backup before the split.
As far as I could tell all I had to do was modify the backend file and make a new front end. However it seems like it is not as easy as I thought it would be. How do you modify a split database without corrupting the files or using a non-split copy?
General :: Forms And Queries In One ACCDB File - Path Setting To Linked Table File
Oct 5, 2014I've got the forms and queries in one .accdb file and my tables in a separate .accdb file. The forms file links to the tables in the tables file. The tables file resides in a folder called simply enough C:acc_tables and thats where i browsed to (obviously) when i set up the linkage.
One of the users does not wish (for whatever goddamn reason) to create a C:acc_tables file to stick the tables file in , and wants the tables file in some other folder.. Unfortunately this user does not have the skills to delete the existing links and re-link to the tables file after putting it in the folder he wants.
Where in the file that holds the forms and and queries do i find the path setting to the tables linked file? Can it be changed without deleting links and then re-linking?

Nov 15, 2013I'm experimenting with MS Access, and I've successfully split an MDB someone created into two files. I can access the database from 2 computers at once using the front end file connecting to a file server which hosts the _be.mdb file.
Could the _be.mdb file theoretically be on a NAS without any computer attached, or is there some runtime or full version of Access that needs to run on the machine with the back end file?

Specify Path To File With UNC
Mar 23, 2008I went to the Microsoft knowledge base (304408) and found a routine that automatically logs off users with a short warning. It works fine, but depends on the presence or absence of a small text file which is named chkfile.ozx. The file is referenced in a form timer function as follows:

The function then tests for its presence and does its thing. You trigger the logoff by going in as sysop and changing the name of the file so it is no longer found.
The problem I have is that on the network, I use the backend file on the network and different users map different letters to it. I get around this by linking using UNC eg. \ServerNameSYSData_be.mdb.
I put the chkfile.ozx into this directory since all users presumably have access to it.
I tried changing the trigger function to
strfilename = Dir("\ServerNameSYSchkfile.ozx")
but the program doesn't recognize the presence of the file. When I map it as "F:SYSchkfile.ozx" it works, but since all users will not be mapped to "F", it really isn't a solution.
Does anyone know the proper syntax to include in the Dir method for UNC naming?
