I have an Access 2010 front end with linked tables via ODBC to a SQL Server back end. Is it possible to add, delete, and otherwise alter the tables on the SQL server from the Access front end? I've tried the following but received an error "cannot execute data definition statements on linked data sources"
I have an access front-end package that works just fine but if there is an update, I just want the program to run scripts to update the SQL Server tables that it is connected to. I just don't know how to do this. I know how to do this on SQL Server Management studio and all, I just was hoping I could do it straight from my access front end so that a user could just click a button and update the tables or something.
I am a computer novice with no experience in PHP or SQL Servers in general. Is there anyway to set up Access as a front-end to an MS SQL Server without having coding knowledge? Is there any good wizard that will export data/formats to a SQL Server while still keeping the interface mechanisms of Access?
I created a database in Microsoft Access and then upsized it to SQL Server afterwards.
I now need to add a new column to a table in the database. So I added the new column in SQL Server using ALTER TABLE command. This column is a foreign key which has an associated parent key in another table which contains a description of the column. e.g. Main_Table Case_ID Foreign_Key_Field_ID 1234 78
New_Foreign_Key_Table Foreign_Key_Field_ID Foreign_Key_Field_Desc 78 Describes the ID 78
I also setup a CONSTRAINTREFERENCE between the fields in these 2 tables.
I then relinked my tables using the Linked Table Manager to pick up the change to the table I altered (Main_Table). I also linked to the new table I created (New_Foreign_Key_Table).
My problem: In Access if I create a new table I can select the lookup value for a field in the Table Design view Lookup tab. However, I altered my table in SQL Server and then linked to it again to pick up the change. Now when I view the linked table in Access it does not have any lookup value AND it's not possible to change this for a linked table.
Is there some piece of SQL I can use in SQL Server to change the lookup value for the field in my table OR have I approached this the wrong way. Should I have modified the local table in Access and upsized it again?
Otherwise if I select all values from my Main_Table in a form it displays the Foreign_Key_Field_ID instead of the Foreign_Key_Field_Desc because the lookup value has not been set to Foreign_Key_Field_Desc
This posting is a bit long - I hope it makes sense.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I have a frontend and a backend database. As usual i keep the tables in the backend. Now I have some tables which need to be emptied and then refilled. I empty the table using the code
Code: DoCmd.RunSQL "DELETE * FROM TransNMTbl;"
then I fill in the table using
Code: DoCmd.RunSQL "INSERT INTO TransNMTbl SELECT * FROM TransTbl;"
The code runs fine. The problem is that the linked table is not used and the sql statement creates another TransNMTbl table in the front end and puts the data there. Bu I need the table to be in backend.
How can I add an additional field to a table based on the output of a query? For example, I have table A with 2 types of records and table B with only 1 type of record. Based on this, I can determine which records in table A are the same type as those in table B. I would however like to be able to flag within table A, those records in table A that are the same as those in table B.
In Access2010 I have created a linked table to a SQLServerExpress database.I have a user in SQLserverExpress with only reading rights. This linked table is used in a form which only shows the information. When opening the form, it prompts for the SQLserverExpress username and password. How can I configure the linked table so that it logs in automatically with the SQL user I prefer so that the user does not need to enter a user / password?
I have a fe that has 5 tables linked to a backend db on the server.I want to add a new table to the fe that is linked to a second db on the server? What I have tried.I have created the tbl_called in the fe.when I right click on it and go to Linked Table Manager I do not see it on the list. The only tables in the list are the 5 I linked before. Why is tbl_called not showing up??
I have two tables (Access 2010). One with a list of names (List1) and another with a very similar list of names (List2), but they differ in very small ways. For example, List1 might have John Smith, and List2 would have Smith, John L.; and Smith, John. List2 also has a unique ID associated with these names that I need to append to List1.
I need to design a form that will allow me to look up names in List1, and have it return all names that are similar in List2. I then need to be able to choose with record in List2 matches with the List1 entry (based on a few other columns in List2, such as birth date) and have the form add that unique ID to the List1 record.
i have a raw data table built, may i know how to hide the table to not allow users to alter the raw data table?
I use the Tool > Startup option to hide everything but if the users are clever enough, they would able to make that available and try to alter the raw data table which i want to prevent and hope that's not gonna happen.
I want to add a column to an existing table using the sql statement Alter table. The new column needs to be a yes/no type. The following code almost works but it only sets the column to a general logical type not specifically the yes/no check box .
I designed a small desktop database to automatically import some Log files. A sample of a transmit log file (emails sent from our rural email stations) looks like this when imported in access.
Date Time Direction SenderMessageID 03062005 133501To InternetemailX@ab.comBlablabla 03062005 125001To InternetemailQ@ab.comBlablabla 03062005 125001To InternetemailZ@ab.comBlablabla 03062005 125001To InternetemailA@ab.comBlablabla
I would like to be able to query all emails sent between one date and another. However, the date here is recorded has a string or text. I would like to automatically add a field with the date as Date/Time datatype in the Table. I think I should be able to do this with a few SQL statement like ALTER TABLE myTable ADD COLUMN NewDate AS datetime…and then another SQL statement to separate data and put it into this new field.
Then I could query for BETWEEN Date1 and Date 2 easily.
I’m pretty close but been trying for a while now and always error messages as results. I think I really NEED help this time.
I am attempting to update an oracle table using MS Access.
One of the fields to be updated is a primary key number field.
I'd like to use the autoincrement field to update that field.
My sql is:
Code:
Alter table testAutoNum Add column progid autoincrement (1001,2)
This sql nicely creates the new field in the table, but it doesn't start at 1001 and increment by 2; it starts and 1 and increments by 1.It is also creating an autonumber and I need it to be a number.
I have some code that creates a table based off another table. This code works perfect but Im trying to alter my ID field and change it to an auto increment. How can I fix my code so that it alters my ID field?
Code: Private Sub Command0_Click() 'OBJECTIVE: to build a table by extracting some fields from a main database Dim rst As Recordset Dim strSQL As String Dim strSQL2 As String Dim intCount As Integer
I am splitting a database and have created the Back end already. When I create the front end and link to the tables on the back end... The front end does not link to all the tables in the back end. The list that comes up when creating the linkings does not show all the tables in the back end. What would cause this?
I have split database (B/E is in the SharePoint library, F/E has users on a local PCs). Sometimes, when I update/add data (does not matter if it is via form or directly in the table) it looks OK, but when I re-open the database, the data are gone.
Problem is that I cannot catch the moment when data were not saved (sometimes data are saved, sometimes not). I can point out this: if I re-enter the missing data, primary key continues subsequently, it looks like the data have never been entered. I tried to use script
Code: If Me.Dirty Then Me.Dirty = False
on "On Close" form event, does not work.
B/E is linked by VBA code and it looks OK (no error, Link Manager shows correct path). I suspect interrupted connetion to the SharePoint but I don't know how to check it. I implemented VBA script co keep open connection to the SP but the issue persists.
I have split my A2013 db into FE and BE, and while it seems to be working OK, I notice that if I look at Relationships in the FE, some of the relationships are missing, though they are still there if I open the BE directly and look there.
Which view of the relationships is correct, how do they get to be different, and how do I force them to be the same ?
I currently have a front-end/back-end database, but at some point in time one of the tables has been modified and whenever the front end connects it comes up with a parameter request for a field that no longer exists. I have narrowed it down to MSysQueries, where there is a reference to this field. Is there anyway I can avoid this or change/repair the system table?
Thanks for all your help on my last post, again have a problem to update the application, Everything works well but then I need toadd an extra table on my app. At first I thought I can add a table on my Back-End but when I open the Front-End it wont update.
Can someone out there help me how to add a table on apps. from the ground up?
I work in an office with Office2000. One branch of our non-profit organisation had a volunteer design a database in Access to track the usage of rented storage bins. The database works great for its intended purpose, however the volunteer is not available and the front-end is so locked down that I can't get into the table structure to run some usage queries I need for my own job, which is Resource Development (donations).
I don't know what to say to give more info, because the computer is a stand-alone in a different department detached from the network, so I have to physically go to the other end of the building & work in it, I can't get screencaps etc easily, and most of the menus have been disabled so it doesn't even give me the info about the version of Access etc.
I split my database. Then got the bright idea to rename them. Now when I launch the front end (which contains the forms, etc.), I get a message saying that it can't find my backed. I've tried renaming the back end back to its original name, but its still not working.
What is the best way to fix this situation? I was thinking about opening the front end, and re-importing the tables from the back end, or, breaking the links between the front end and back end. If I re-import, should I move stuff from the front end to the back end or vice versa?
I have a split database. My backend Relationships aren't updating to my front end. How do I get my front end relationships to update to what my back end looks like? All tables are LINKED not imported.
