Tables :: Can Split A Column Values Into 2 Columns
Jul 3, 2014
I have a column that's called "Date" which stores values for begining to end date as 'Text' like: 070314-073114 So I need to split it to 2 columns that has the Start Date as 070314 and End Date as 073114?
This database is still in Microsoft Access, and eventually after cleaning it up, we will move it to SQL Server.

I have a table that has two columns "Nationality" and "Gender". I wanted to run a query that will Group the nationality and then split the gender column into two columns and after that it will count both gender columns for each nationality. When I posted this question in "Reports" section I got the suggestion to use the SELECT COUNT in SQL. It worked but only for nationality. I couldn't get it work for the Gender column. I searched alot and the only thing I got was the SQL function to split data from one column into two but that also didn't serve the purpose (check the link to see why: [URL]) At last, I went on to create a cross tab query. Selected Nationality as Row header, Gender as Column header and Customer ID as calculation point. And there I got the result I needed. The SQL Code looks like this:
Code:
TRANSFORM Count(Register.[Customer ID]) AS [CountOfCustomer ID]
SELECT Register.National, Count(Register.[Customer ID]) AS [Total Of Customer ID]
FROM Register
GROUP BY Register.National
PIVOT Register.P_Gender;
Crosstab query did the trick..

I'm trying to make a database to track inventory or several items. Basically, I have four tables:
1) RawMaterialList - includes a list of all raw materials.
2) PartList - includes a list of all finished product using said raw materials.
3) RawMaterialRecieving - contains details from each packing slip of incoming raw materials.
4) ShipmentRecord - contains details of daily shipments.
Each of these tables is fed by a form of the same name. I should note at this point that I basically taught myself how to use Access and I imagine I'm in the dark about quite a few things it can do. I've made several databases over the last few years, but I'm stumped at this point.
Here's my problem. In the form RawMaterialReceiving, I have several fields aside from basic information:
1) Item - a list of of raw materials from table RawMaterialList
2) Description - also dependent on info entered into table RawMaterialList
3) Quantity
But, I have 12 of these instances.
Item1, Item2...Item12;
Description1, Description2...Description12;
Quantity1, Quantity2...Quantity12.
My problem is I want to add up the quantities of each raw material and I'm not sure how to go about that. Lets say on May 13, I received 15pcs of Part A and 20pcs of Part B. I enter this information as Item1 and Item2 respectively. On May 14, I received 30pcs of Part B. I enter this information under Item1. Now I want to add up all of Part B (50 pcs). But Part B has one value listed in the field Quantity1 and one value listed in the field Quantity2.
Example:
1st Entry:
May 13
Item1 = PartA Description1 = PartA's description Quantity1 = 15
Item2 = PartB Description2 = PartB's description Quantity2 = 20
2nd Entry:
May 14
Item1 = PartB Description1 = PartB's description Quantity1 = 30
How do I get it to add up Part B to get 50pcs?

I have 4 tables that store information on guest charges (stayinfo/room rate, fuel charges, bar tab, merch charges) each linked to table carrying guest ID's. Is there a way to combine/merge all the tables into one in such a way that all of the guestID's are in one column, all of the charges are in another column etc? Basically adding one table to the bottom of another.

I have a database for scheduling students' for tests. They can take up to six tests in a day. There are about 80 different tests that they can take.
In my table, I created columns titled Test1, Test2, Test3, etc. They are lookup columns and I chose to enter my own values, putting in the tests titles for the values in each column.
When I add these drop-down lookup fields onto the form, it will only display 37 of these values. When I go back to the table and select "edit list items," it shows that it did cut the list off at 37, even though originally it allowed me to enter all 80-ish titles.
Anyway. It appears that there are limited values you can have in a lookup column, though after doing a lot of searching online I can't find anything to indicate that is true.
It seems to me that it would be smarter to set this up with two different tables, storing the reg info in one table and the test titles in another table. However, I am having a hard time figuring out the relationship aspect of this solution and how to make it pull up the correct values for queries/reports as well.

I am using a form based on a table in MS Access 2010 for data entry.
The Data Type for column ID is AutoNumber with Increment=1. When I found ID for recent entries gets an anomaly (e.g. should be ... 3, 4, 5 ..., but it shows ... 3, 5, 6 ... that misses 4), I tried to refresh/change the ID column with the following steps:
1). Change the Data Type for column ID from AutoNumber to Number
2). Add a new column IDD and set its Data Type as AutoNumber
3). Delete the original column ID
4). Change column name IDD into column name ID
However, I got a problem with step 2): here the order # for the records becomes messed up, e.g.
Should be:
ID IDD
1 1
2 2
3 3
5 4
6 5
7 6
... ...
But, I got:
ID IDD
1 3
2 4
3 5
5 1
6 2
7 6
... ...
Why? Is this caused by the relationships between this table and other tables?

Hi,
I need a query that could split data into 2 different field.
The table pic is attached for your ready reference. I tird with Left & Right funtions with no results.
Any one can help me please.
Table name is Agcad and field on which I need to split is Board_Size. The problem is Board_Size data is sometime in 3 digit (first half part) and sometime second half part is in 4 digit. It is a text data type field.
Thanks in advance...

Currently I have a calculated field in my table; however, under certain circumstances I need to change the value to another value which is not related to the calculation. I understand that the calculated fields are read only (why is that?), so I was wondering if there was any way to change values within a calculated column without actually changing the expression itself.

I have been given the task of organising a mail-merge with a sharepoint list, but the names and emails attached to each object are seperated by a delimiter. Furthermore each person is associated with many objects, and they want the merge programmed to only send 1 email to each person.
So what I need to do is split the data in one column into three separate columns, and then perform a concatenate. The concatenate isn't an issue, but how to split the data into 3 new columns within Access?
If worst comes to worst I'll tell them they will have to use the text-to-columns function in excel first, but would like to try and avoid that where possible.

I am pretty new to VBA and I am having the same problem of hiding and un-hiding columns on a datasheet of a split form. I am building a system that will be used in front of customer and therefore wish to hide columns that contain cost sensitive data. The same forms need to be able to show the Sales Rep the hidden columns simply by ticking a box. Basically a toggle on and off of hidden columns.
I have been playing around with the code below (which i found in another forum) to hide the Field called COO when I click the tick box called chkHIdeFields check box. This works on a Single form but not on a datasheet of a split form.
Private Sub chkHideFields_Click()
' Note: vbTrue = -1
If Me.chkHideFields = vbTrue Then
Me.COO.Visible = True
Else: Me.COO.Visible = False
End If
End Sub
I have been able to hide the column of my split form by using the ColumnHidden property of the On Load event just as a proof of concept that the ColumnHidden property actually works to hide a column, which it does. This is the code that im using to hide the column called COO.
Me.COO.ColumnHidden = True
However if I then set it to = False and then close and open the form, it doesn't unhide the column. the only way I can unhide the column is to do it from the Form view via the un-hide dialogue pop up box.
I have two issues here, the first one is getting the form to recognize when to hide and when to show the column of the datasheet on the split form and the second is to get the code to for the check box method.
Lastly once I get it working for 1 field I need to be able to define a list of 7 or 8 other fields all at the same time.

For some reason when I change the order around of the columns in a split form or subform 90% of the time it wont save (right click save, file save, etc..) and have to constantly redo it until it finally works. Am I missing something obvious as to why this is happening?

I've created several Split forms that have the data input fields in the form with the relevant query datasheet shown below. As you tab through the form fields, the various cells in the datasheet are highlighted and move across the data row (as one would expect!). I want to put a particular field / Column at the start of the datasheet so that it's always available for view, but it seeme that what ever I do the column ends up back at the very far end of the data row!
I've sussed out the "Freeze Fields" facility which will keep the first column visable whichever cell is highlighted across the data row.
The column I want as the first column currently sits at the far end of the data row. So far I have dragged the row to the first column position; I've arranged the Query driving the form so that the column is at the front of the row, both in design view and in datasheet view, but to no avail. Everything I do to put the column at the start of the row in the datasheet shown below the form ends up with it back at the far end of the row the next time I open the form.

I am trying to split a number sequence (Ex. 25372-400-E10-0000-D0021) Where the third number in the sequence can be either 2 or 3 numbers/letters.
The idea is to have a query that will split this number into its individual parts. I have seen several forums about splitting two numbers and such but I can't seem to make that work when I need to create 5 columns from this one field.

Hi all,
In the organisation that I work for employees get paid every 2 weeks on a Saturday. So for this financial year the pay period end dates have been 08/07/2006, 22/07/2006, 05/08/2006 etc
I have a column in an Access table listing various dates. I want the next column to be
populated with the next pay period end date after that date.
So if DATE is 05/07/2006 I want PAY PERIOD END to be 08/07/2006
and if DATE is 09/07/2006 I want PAY PERIOD END to be 22/07/2006 etc
How do I do this?
Kind Regards,

I have this table ("people") and an example of possible rows:
id(key) COL 1 COL2 department country name
1 xx yy KPP USA John
2 zz kk KPP USA John
3 ss ff TLL USA John
4 ww qq PPO Italy Marco
5 jj uu PPO Italy Marco
I have to count the number of distinct DEPARTMENT for each NAME; so, for John should be 2 (KPP and TLL) and for Marco 1 (PPO).
I have tryed in this way:
SELECT
COUNT(DISTINCT department) AS NumberOfDifferentDepartments
FROM people
GROUP BY name;
But Access says me there is a syntax error.
I'm working with MS Access 2002.

I need to separate the values AA, BB as one column and 000,001 as another column. How do I write code to accomplish this in a module in VBA.
So the tasks I need to do is:
read in the Excel file
split the data in a column in to two columns
update the already existing access table with the data in the two new columns.

I have an Access Database and I want to split up one column into multiple columns. The one column has multiple rows that relate to one person, so for instance I have the following:I am taking information from both tables and I want to create a query but I need to separate out the mother, father, and guardian with the names attached
So from the Child table :
Joe Smith Address Phone
The query that I created is from two tables, the child table and the family table: ( I used the dashes just for it to be easier to read)
------Child Table/PrimaryKey --------Family Table---------------------
First Name--- Last Name--- First Name--- Last Name--- Relationship
Joe ----------------Smith ----------Jane --------Doe-------------Mother
Joe ----------------Smith ----------John---------Smith---------- Father
So in this scenario I need to get the name of the second parent in another column....meaning have all the parents appear on the same line for this child, and each child there after..
So I need it to look like this:
------Child Table/PrimaryKey --------Family Table---------------------
First Name------ Last Name------ First Name------ Last Name------ Relationship------ 2First Name------2Last Name------2Relationship
Joe----------------Smith------------ Jane-------------- Doe------------- Mother-----------John---------------- Smith------------ Father

Is there a way of changing the column heading names on the split form portion of an access form. I tried changing them using a query to populate the form and changing the caption of each field in the query and that didn't work. I also tried adding a [Caption] at the design level of the table and that had no affect also. The split form seems to be displaying a portion of the actual field name or something like that.
