Tables :: Cannot Create A Rich Text Memo Field
Jan 1, 2013
In Access 2010, I'm creating a table with a rich text memo field.
I name the field (BugDescription), select "Memo" as the Data Type, and from the Text Format dropdown I select "Rich Text."
However, as soon as I do that, it switches back to plain text.
I can't find any documentation anywhere that would indicate why I can't set this property...

I have a Memo field in my table. I have changed the Text Format property to Rich Text. I can now change the formats etc of the values in the field.
However, I now want to see the Markup HTML tags in the table fields i.e. <b>test</b> in order for me to make changes manually as well.

When I changed the memo field from plain text to Rich Text, I got the below divs and slashes. Is there any way to get rid of them?
<div>GC in process - EB1.</div>
<div> </div>
I had only "GC in process - EB1" in plain text.

We need to move rich text from an Access memo field to a Word text box. So far the best Ive been able to come up with is in the code below. In this code pprs! What is a record set field of a table memo field that is bound to a text box enabled for rich text. The rich text seems to be stored as html as so I can get word to convert it by enclosing it in html tags.
Dim What As Word.Shape
Set What = doc.Shapes.AddTextbox(msoTextOrientationHorizontal , doc.PageSetup.LeftMargin, 225, 534, 0)
Dim sPath As String
sPath = "G:Temp.html"
Open sPath For Output As 1
Print #1, "<HTML>" & pprs!What & " </HTML>"
Close #1
What.TextFrame.TextRange.InsertFile (sPath)

I have an Access 2010 database with a memo field formatted for Rich Text.
I created a simple form. It accepts and shows paragraphs, i.e. I press Return and a new paragraph appears (with a blank line in between paragraphs).
I then created a report based on the same fields. In the memo field it shows the text entered in the form, but not the paragraph breaks. It just shows one big block of text without any paragraph breaks. I have looked for a field property in the report design and layout views that might affect how the text is displayed in the report but I cannot find one.
It is not much use if you can input paragraph breaks in a form but not see them in a report.

how I can set a color on table column formatted as rich text and memo. For instance this table has 4 different columns of remarks, one from each engineering operating center. Remarks_1, Remarks_2, Remarks_3 and Remarks_4. Each one of the 4 operating centers enters the remarks in one of these fields. On the Dashboard report, what I do is I get all these 4 fields and merge in 1 because the report is already narrow due to several other columns as well. So there is a report combining all data : =Remarks_1& " -"&Remarks_2&" - "&Remarks_3&" - "&Remarks_4 under Remarks.
The point is that the Dashboard has colorcode, Orange for Remarks_1, Red for Remarks_2, Blue for Remarks_3 and Green for Remarks_4. All these fields are memo on rich text format. On the form I have set the color of each field, however the color doesn't get set on the table as well, but only on the form fields. How can I set a defined color to each field on the table? And also when I get all data in one column, I would see all different colors.

I'm trying to output some logging to a form with a Rich text textbox
This is what the form is displaying:
14:16:32: check OK: 500<10000andS235='s460'>
14:16:32: check OK: 500<10000andS235='s355'>
14:16:32: check failed:too short 500<1000231231 >
14:16:32: Ready ...
There is some coloring in the text but I'm not display that here (copy/paste of the textbox)
This is the HTML behind it (? txtbox in imm.window):
14:16:32: <font color=black>check OK: 500<10000andS235='s460'</font><br />14:16:32: <font color=black>check OK: 500<10000andS235='s355'</font><br />14:16:32: <font color=red><strong>check failed:too short 500<1000231231 </strong></font><br />14:16:32: <font color=green><strong>Ready ... </strong></font><br />
The problem is in the red > that are added to each line. I have no clue where they are coming from, in fact: they are NOT in the HTML.When I display this piece of HTML in IE I don't get the red > behind each line.I have tried to use <p> of <div> instead of <br/> but that makes no difference
Code:
Forms!frm_Calculationlog.txtmsg = Forms!frm_Calculationlog.txtmsg & "<div>" & _
Format(Now(), "hh:nn:ss") & ": " & _
IIf(strColor <> "", "<font color=" & strColor & ">", "") & IIf(booBold, "<strong>", "") & strMessage & _
IIf(booBold, "</strong>", "") & IIf(strColor <> "", "</font></div>", "")
I can assure you that the > is NOT in the strMessage ... f.e. this is the ouput of strMessage on the first line: 500 <10000 and 'S235' ='s460'
strColor is a string in which I can set a color ("red", "blue")
booBold is a boolean with which I can set text to bold

I am generating a report that needs to have a hyperlink in part of one of the fields. Prior to saving the field to the database I do a bit of VBA coding on it and add some HTML. The result is this in the field:
"There are two ways to book with your preferred rate: <br>
1. <b><a href="http://hamptoninn.hilton.com/en/hp/reservations/index.jhtml?hotel=ABGVA&corporateCode=12345">Click Here</a></b>! <br>
2. Call us directly or at 1-800-Hampton and use your Corporate ID 12345."
It works beautifully if you paste it into a web page but in the Access report, Access applies the Bold but just ignores the hyperlink.
This is Access 2013 with MS SQL Server 2008 backend. Everything I have read suggests that this should work and is supported. Is there some trick I'm missing?

I'm using Access 2010. I'm passing a string into the OpenArgs of my report - works fine. In the report there are 3 rich text fields which may contain the text I passed in, and if so I want to change the color of that text to red so it stands out.
The value passed to the report changes so I'll need to use VBA in the detail's format section to check each of the 3 rich text fields.

This is a errand database where each client can have several errands and some errands are related to each one and other.
Since each client can have several errands and and each errand is related to each one and other, then the client. I thought i need key which can work as a ClientErrandID, so i can tie the errands together. My idee is to use the ClientErrandID as an text auto incrementing field with a string like: (Errand-A-xxxx).
Lest say the range would be from (Errand-A-0000 to Errand-A-9999) And when the string hits "9999" at the end the "A" will switch to a "B" and the number counter would start over from "0000"
How should the table relationship look like? When a user is adding a new errand to a client, how should the function work?
Should all the associated errands be created in the background and granted the same Errand_ID when the main errand is created? Can i create a incrementing text field with vba & queries?
How would the code structure look like?Is there any examples on a incrementing text field with code available?

Hi All,
I have a database with two memo fields. Both have exactly the same properties in table design view.
One field is called 'notes' and when I want a new line I just have to hit ENTER. Result is as wanted.
The other field is called 'responses' and when I hit ENTER, the cursor jumps to the next field (as if these were a text rather than a memo field). it does not start a fresh line. However, this field has not length restriction; I can copy and paste any number of lines into it. But I must not hit ENTER, and I cannot produce a line break.
As I said above, both fields appear to have exactly the same properties in Design View. Why then do they behave differently?
What's wrong? What have I overlooked?
Thanks for your help.
Adrian

Are there any other advantages in using a text field verses a memo field other than memory allocation? Memory allocation seems like such a small issue these days.

I am a pretty novice user currently playing around with Access 2013 using Office 365.
I used to love the old style Memo field where people cut put in carriage returns to split up data. I am wondering if this function has been removed with this LONG TEXT FIELD or is there a way around it.
I like it because I tend to use it as a tracking field and like the newest "comments" at the top separated by a Carriage Return...

Hello everyone - what I have is a a set of default text's that I need to be able to insert into a memo field - this is how I've set it up (Access 2000)
A table with the text fields in it called wordings
table comprises of
Id field
wordingnme (txt)
wording (Memo)
and I have a combo box on a form which looks up the wordingnme and hold this info - I need to have a button that will take this wordingnme and insert the wording that it relates to into the field of my record - Called Endor (memo)- I will have many text s say upto 50-60 but when I insert these into endor field I will probable only use say 5 or 6 at any one time on the record line so an example follows
line 45 in endor I wish to insert wordingnme "A" and then Wordingnme "B"
I also will do some free form type within this - any idea's

Hi,
Probably a really simple question, but is causing me problems! I need to be able to limit the amount of characters that can be entered into a field. For text fields I can just enter the relevant field size, but can not find an equivalent for a memo field. Validation rule warns you that there are to many characters, but doesn't seem to actually limit you.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Can anyone help....
I have a field on an Access db, this is a "Memo " type field which has many lines of text within it.
I need to run a query on this to get the last line of text within this field.
Aside from records where this memo field is filled in I also have records where the memo field is blank. So basically if the memo field is blank I want a blank field returned as well as fields with data.
I am using Access 2003 but also am running this on Access 2000 (not sure if there has been a change to function names)
This is seriously bugging me - can anyone put me out of my misery?

Hi,
I have been searching and searching and cannot find any info on this specific problem.
I have a subform that users go into and enter data into the fields. Intermittenly, when a user closes out and then goes back in, the data in one of the fields (always the same field) is missing and has been replaced with ########.
Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks,

I'm trying to save the contents of a text box into a memo field in a table, but after my code runs i look in the field and it is cut off after a hundred characters or so, and the last few characters are garbled. This is the code:
Code: DoCmd.RunSQL "UPDATE orderheaders SET orderheaders.Comments = [Text127] WHERE orderheaders.OrderNumber = " & GlOrderNumber & ""
orderheaders = table
Text127 = text box
GlOrderNumber = integer variable
Is there a way to do this with only code? (I dont want to do it by binding the text box to the field)

Hi
I'm new to forum and can't find an answer to this problem. I am using Access 2002 and have a memo field in a form that I want people to be able to type in as much text as they want. This is then displayed in a report. The form accepts the text with no problems however when I view it in the report it has been cut to 255 characters as if it is a text box. I have set the properties to 'can grow' to no avail. I have searched the MS Knowledge base for a solution with no luck. I admit I'm not an expert in Access and would really appreciate some help as I have been trying to overcome this problem for days.

The database contains the records of a collection of thousands of photographs and negatives.
One of the fields contains information on the subject matter of each pic and can sometimes be very long. The field was changed from text to memo so as to hold more characters but they appeared in one long string, which means a lot of scrolling to see the information. That has been changed back to text and we are adding a second or third record such as xxx-xxx-xxx cont1 xxx-xxx-xxx cont2 so as to get shorter strings. Is there a way to make the text wrap onto a second or third line automatically after a specific number of characters have been entered or can a carriage return be put in to force the text to a new line?

I am having trouble creating a specifically formatted report.
Anyway, I have two fields: [Title] (plain text) and [Description] (memo). I want to combine the two but have the Title bold underlined but not the Description. I want it to look like this:
This is the Title. And this is the decription part that could go on for many, many more lines...
I have tried combining the two fields like: =[Title] & [Description] but if I set the properly to underline, then the whole thing is underlined.
Since the Title will vary in length, I cannot just underline the Title and then put the Description field next to it.

I'd like to set the value of a memo field on a form so that part of it is in bold. For instance, I want to say:
[memo_control] = "This is not bold" & "this is bold" & "this is not bold"
How do I do that in VBA?

I am in the process of changing over a text field to a memo field to generate more space (in 5 different databases  ) Thanks to all the good info on several searches of this forum, I am pretty clear on how to do that.
The question is... when I convert a field that already has information in it, will I lose the current information?
TIA,
