Tables :: Import Excel Into Table / Overwrite Data Of Fields Imported
Mar 17, 2015
I have a table, which contains many fields, around 90. Out of these 90 Fields, around 40 will be imported from an Excel sheet, which has same headers as the 40 field names in my table, in which they have to get copied.
So when I import data, it copies them as new records, instead what I am looking at is, the records in Excel and in Access table has a Unique Key, so when I import data, matching with this unique key, the fields should be overwritten into those records from Excel, instead of adding new records.
E.g:
Say I have 2 records in my access:
ID(auto generated) Fab_name Issue_ID Location Remarks Data_1 Data_2 Data_3
1 Fab1 193 NY Bug OC DC MC
2 Fab2 641 DRS Error AC KC FC
Now when I am importing data from Excel with the following records:
Fab_name Issue_ID Location Remarks
Fab1 193 NY - GRM Solved
Fab2 641 DRS - SGP Forwarded
So when I import the above data into my Access from Excel, based on Issue ID, it should update the values of different fields that are imported from Excel, leaving other fields (data_1, Data_2, Data_3) as it is.
And I need this to be written as a macro, so that user just has to choose the file, which he has to import.

I have a table with a primary key.
This table has address type information in it. I have an import *.csv file that I want to overwrite to this table. I want it to identify the primary key and then update address fields if applicable. I also want it to recognize when no key exists and than create a new record. However, I'm getting an error because the primary key exists and then it doesn't update the other fields. PLEASE HELP ME. How can I overwrite data in a table?

User imports data from Excel to a table but i am not sure that the user will import right data into the table.
So in case a error comes due to a record, i want to cancel all the changes/updates done because of that excel file.
i.e if there are 10 records to be imported and error comes while uploading 5th record, then all the 4 records updated earlier should be recalled / reversed / cancelled...

I have the following statement which exports data based on a query to a .xls:
DoCmd.TransferSpreadsheet acExport, acSpreadsheetTypeExcel9, "qryreportsbydate", "C:Documents and SettingspdaintyDesktopRawQualityData_Weekly.xls"
This works fine it exports the data and names the sheet rawqualitydata.
The problem i'm having is when i come to run the export again Excel tells me the file already exists. What I want it to do is overwrite the data in the rawqualitydata sheet in the same file.
Is this possible?

I am trying to run a report based off Data I dump into Excel from a Database I use for Property management. Once I have dumped this data I amend it for reporting purposes. The issue I am having is this data constanly gets updated and every time I dump new data it obviously overrides all the changes I had made. How can I set up access to know what data I have already imported, keep it and only add NEW data from excel? To make a little more sense in Excell Colum A is Work Order Number, B is property address, C is Works to be done. I alter the works to be done when first dump it as it requires more info and updating. I need Acess to only import new Work order numbers that are not already there and leave any changes I have made to other colums as the report will continue to evolve.

I'm trying to automate a repeated data import event. Here's the user process I'm aiming for:
We have a handheld barcode scanner which will be used to enter orders into an excel spreadsheet with the following fields:
PatrolID, UsedDate, ItemsID, NumSignsOut
After scanning in an order, the user will plug the scanner into a computer and download the spreadsheet to a predetermined file location/name.
The user then opens Access and pushes the 'Process Order' button which imports the excel sheet and generates an invoice.
I already have the invoice process working, I'm now trying to get the data import to work. Here's the table structure:
tblSignUsed:
UsedID, PatrolID, UsedDate
tblSignUsedDetail
UsedDetID, UsedID, ItemsID, NumSignsOut
tblSignUsed Joins tblSignUsedDetail ON UsedID = UsedID
tblSignUsedDetail is the line items, tblSignUsed is the orders. Therefore, the import function has to first take the first two columns to generate an order in tblSignUsed and then take the second two columns to generate order details associated with the order which was just created.

I am trying to build a DB for work at the gas company. Currently this is tracked on 10 excel flat files and I want to make this process more efficient. The company DB is oracle based and the system is not set up for me to limit views just to my information. Therefore I am trying to build an access DB to handle this. What I am doing is downloading a copy of the DB info (which includes everyones area) to an excel spreadsheet and linking this to access as a linked table so I can use this information. Unfortunately, this means it makes a linked table without a key field.
However, according to information that I have read, I am unable to use this linked table in a form because it makes the form not updateable??? Is this due to the linked table and if so, is there a work around?
The reason I link this information is due to multiple fields that are updated hourly/daily. If I turn this into a table, then I will have to either manually update these fields constantly or create additional steps in order to recreate the wheel so to speak. I don't need to be able to update the linked information in the form, I just want to see it when doing the data entry for the purpose of specific dates, previous surveys, previous survey results, and for flagging due dates. Is this possible?
So far, the only information that I have been able to research on this is how to link information or how to import excel as a table but nothing that speaks of how to use a linked table in a form or what limitations a linked table has.

I am trying to import from Excel and append to an existing table. My excel sheet is named tblStatus and I am trying to append it to my Access table "tblStatus".
I get an error message that says "The first row contains some data that can't be used for valid Access Field Names. In these cases, the wizard will automatically assign valid field names." (I used the excel sheet to set up my table.) After I click OK, I get to the point where I can click finish, and I get a "Subscript out of range" error.
MY row headers are:
strOrderOps
strOrderNo
strOperation
strOrderType
dtmBasicStartDate
dtmActualFinishDate
dtmCalFinishDate
strStatus
I am not sure what is going on.

Hello guyz,
With the help of 'Import External Data' wizard, my import did not happen. My datatypes and Col. Headers in excel are matching for what I have in access table. Alternatively, I selected to import the data into new table and all of the data got imported. My question, since I already have some data in table I want data to be imported, how can I do about bringing all the data from new table I created during import to the existing table. Please suggest. Thanks in advance.

I have imported an Excel spreadsheet into an Access database. In Excel, a line break in a cell is entered by ALT+Enter. After importing my spreadsheet, all my line breaks appear as "□" and the text all runs together (no line breaks) in the table. The "□"s are also printed in reports. I need a way to either (1) make the "□"s appear as line breaks (e.g., by changing some Access property) or to convert the "□"s to something that shows as a line break in an the Access table memo field (e.g., CNTRL+Enter). Can anyone tell me how to make this happen?
I've tried to copy/paste the "□" into the Find/Replace dialog, but nothing appears when I paste. I understand the memo field is unicode, but I have not been able to determine what the "□" character actually is. It is not the same as the only similar squared shaped character I find in the Arial character map (U+25A1: White Square). I can copy and paste the "□", if surrounded by some other text, e.g., "xxx□yyy", into a Notepad document and it shows up as "xxx□yyy". Pasting the same into a Word doc and I get
"xxx
yyy" with the line break properly displayed. I can copy and paste just the □ itself in Notepad.

I want a user to click a button, have the file open dialog open, they select a spreadsheet, and then it imports into a table. The problem is the filename can be different every time. The table name will remain constant.
Here is the OnClick:

On Error GoTo Err_ImportSpreadsheet_Click
DoCmd.TransferSpreadsheet acImport, acSpreadsheetTypeExcel2Xml, "Table1", "T_Staff.xls", "Yes"
Exit_ImportSpreadsheet_Click:
Exit Sub
Err_ImportSpreadsheet_Click:
Resume Exit_ImportSpreadsheet_Click
End Sub

I'm looking for someone to help me with a solution to my problem of importing data into a data table.
What I'd like to do is have a command button on a form. When this button is clicked the records in a table are cleared out. Then I'd like for a browse window to come up to locate an Excel file. The user would select this file and the data would be imported into the data table that was just cleared.
Can this be done without too much trouble?
Thanks, Paul

I have the following piece of code for importing the .csv files from a selected folder and then renaming them into 'imported & filename' if succesful and 'failed & filename' if import failes for whatever reason (bad formating, etc.).
The problem is that the first time it encounters a 'bad' file after another, instead of going again to the Error handler, the command
Code:
DoCmd.TransferText acImportDelim, , "Activitate", filename, True
gives me the default MS Access error, namely 2391. I would like it to go the the Error_handler again ang follow the course of actions and rename the files into 'failed' and 'imported'.
Here's the code:
Sub ImportActivitate()
Dim strFile As String 'Filename's
Dim strFileList() As String ' File Array
Dim intFile As Integer 'Number of files
Dim filename As String, sFullName As String, sFilename As String
DoCmd.SetWarnings False
[code]....
Also, how can I make the routine stop cycling through the files after I renamed them all?

I have a form that has 2 combo boxes and a list box. As I select items from each of the lists, the lists get changed. I tried setting some queries to Snapshot, but then I couldn't select from the list.
Alternatively, How can I find out where or why the data is being overwritten?

Attached in the ZIPPED file is an Excel spreadsheet.
Columns A is all numeric, and needs to be represented in access as a text field.
Column B is a mixed format of dates entered and in some instances only plain numeric. I need to import this column as is into a text field in access.
I tried importing the excel sheet, but the data gets changed.I tried to linked the Excel sheet but it also had an influence on the data.In both cases the influence of change is NOT throughout. Hence my need to get this spreadsheet into access as is.

I have a table that is updated from an update query which gets its data from a table, which gets its data from a form. I have set the query to only update the current record, this is done by a macro when the user exits the input box. The problem arises when a user goes to visit past record, I would like it to not overwrite the old data with the new data. If the query was only allowed to ADD data and not overwrite then this would fix the problem!
My SQL code is as follows:
UPDATE [Run Info], [Sieve Weights] SET [Run Info].[315 Tare] = [Sieve Weights]![315 Tare], [Run Info].[250 Tare] = [Sieve Weights]![250 Tare], [Run Info].[200 Tare] = [Sieve Weights]![200 Tare], [Run Info].[160 Tare] = [Sieve Weights]![160 Tare], [Run Info].[100 Tare] = [Sieve Weights]![100 Tare], [Run Info].[75 Tare] = [Sieve Weights]![75 Tare], [Run Info].[50 Tare] = [Sieve Weights]![50 Tare], [Run Info].[BD Tube Tare] = [Sieve Weights]![BD Tube]
WHERE ((([Forms]![1L Input form]![ID No])=[Run Info]![ID No]));

When I import a column from Excel into a new table in Access using the Docmd.transferspreadsheet function, Access automatically assigns a field name of "F1"; and if I try to import a range of columns (Eg A1:B10), then Access saves them into a table with 2 columns with field names "F1" and "F2". The table is created as part of the Docmd function, and so I don't have control over the field names.
Is this going to always be the case? Can I depend on Access to always use this naming convention? Because I am about to start writing more code that will depend on these field names.

I have a production machine that writes its output to a CSV file every time it produces a good part (several times pr. day). It can produce identical part which means that the mashine will not put in another line in the csv, but just update the no of produced parts. I had to rename the attached file because you can not uploade *.csv files in the forum.
What I want is:
- When someone opens a specific Access db a tabel in the db is updated with all new data from the csv file.
My problem is: How do I make sure that I only get the new data from the Access db.

I would like to know which way is the best way to import excel data from multiple sheets in to multiple tables in access.
For example data from Sheet1 -> Table1, Sheet2->Table2, Sheet3->Table3 etc...
I have tried using this:
Cmd.TransferSpreadsheet acImport, acSpreadsheetTypeExcel5, "Table1", "C:Importedfile.xlsx", True, "Sheet1!"
Ironically, data from Sheet2 and Sheet3 seem to be properly imported in to table2 and table3, but some of the data from Sheet1 seems to be missing in Table1 after import.
Any other ways to import the data?

How can I import from multiple tables into one table without replacing the destination table.so that the destination table consist of old data and new imported data.
For example: I have table A with date 130205 and I need to import from table B and C which the dates are 130206 and 130207. Those 3 tables already have the same column numbers and data type.
