Tables :: Importing Spreadsheet - How To Convert Data To PK / FK

Mar 14, 2013

I have a spreadsheet of generators with associated data: Make, Model, etc.

When I build the tables for the Make, each make will have it's own PK. Is there a good way to update the spreadsheet, replacing the Make for the PK other than using the find and replace function in excel (or update query in Access).

Example:

tblGeneratorMake
GeneratorID (PK)
GeneratorMake

John Deere has PK of 1
Kohler has PK of 2

If my spreadsheet has a list of Kohler generators, I need to change "Kohler" to "2".

Importing Data From A Spreadsheet To Existing Multiple Tables

May 30, 2006

First off, its been a long time since I have been here (since sometime in 2003 LOL), partly because I didn't have to create a new db in a while. Now, I have been handed a project and come across something new.

OK, here is what I want to do. I would like to be able to dump data from an Excel file into existing Access tables (two to be more specific). Now, I also have relating tables that add data into certain fields. I tried using a query to try to group data ad hopeful able to dump data through the query. I noticed that I couldn't import data through a query. Just for kicks, I tried to pull data through table and noticed that I can only create a new table, not able to update and existing table.

How would I go about performing this task? I have never attempted anything in the past.

Thank you in advance for your considered help,

Steve

Importing Data In Spreadsheet Or Table Format Directly From Clipboard?

Apr 5, 2012

I work at a hospital and I have been able to copy and paste data from a patient list into an Excel spreadsheet into a list I can customize to track patients I work with. I had a macro that would take the data copied and pasted and organize it in the way I needed it in a design that works for me.

I'm trying to convert this system to Access to give me more control over the data and to try and make the process of creating the list a little more automated. I also have an Access database for "tracking", which is required by hospital management so I was hoping I could use the patient list database to streamline the process of entering interactions into the tracking database.

I'm not sure how to get the copied and pasted patient list into an Access in a way that will let me manipulate it in Access to do what I want it to do without having to add several steps of a) pasting it into Excel, b) importing the spreadsheet into the Access database, and c) cleaning the data that ends up in the final Access table.

Is there a way to import data in a spreadsheet or table format directly from the clipboard, which would allow me to skip Excel altogether? I'm using Access and Excel 2010.

Tables :: Data From A Database To Create Excel Spreadsheet

Aug 15, 2014

I'm exporting data from a database (using a query) to create an excel spreadsheet. I then import said spreadsheet into a new database. I was hitting lots of problems (subscript out of range, violating this that and the other etc etc) which I cleared up and actually imported the data. Well today I cleared down the new database and imported the spreadsheet again and got this.

the contents of fields in 0 records were deleted and 0 records were lost due to key violations.Thereby followed what to do when you get these things happening. Now to me 0 records deleted and 0 records lost means it's all worked. WRONG!! No records were imported at all.

Tables :: Two Identical Database - Importing Tables By Linking To Data Source

Dec 3, 2012

I have 2 identical database in terms of structure but it differs in data.

Basically I would like to import data from subDatabase to mainDatabase and ensuring that there are no duplicate records.

I have used the "link to datasource method" through importing the tables to have the "updating" function.

However, this method also means that the records in mainDatabase are also imported over to subDatabase which I do not want.

Is there a method to ensure that the records are shared/update one way only? (i.e. import from subDatabase to mainDatabase and not main to sub?)

Importing Flat Spreadsheet Into Normalized DB

Nov 29, 2004

So I’ve been assigned to develop a database in Access which will house information on students who are participating in an internship program sponsored by my employer. I was given a spreadsheet with roughly 40 columns, so it is pretty detailed info about the students. For example personal student info (DOB, email, phone, etc), as well as school, major, year rank, school address, permanent address, etc.

Importing this given table is easy, just by using the import wizard. However I am faced with a challenge. The info I have is up to date at this point however in years to come there will be a need to import new student info. The only way my employer wants that to be done is by taking the new excel spreadsheet and importing that data into the already created database. Now this wouldn't be a problem if the DB is one flat, non-normalized, table because the columns would line up. However I feel that the DB needs to be normalized because of the vast amount of data that is repetitive, such as State or Major.

Is there a way to import an excel sheet into an existing normalized access database? Or even a way to automate it so that the excel columns would be broken up into the separate corresponding normalized tables?

Thanks!

Importing Excel Spreadsheet To Access Database Daily

Jun 1, 2006

I need some help on this one. I have two Crystal Report generated Excel spreadsheets that are auto-updated on a daily basis. One spreadsheet contains computer assets, type, model, locations, etc. The second spreadsheet has users assigned to them, phone numbers, etc. I need to import these in to existing tables with numerous filters into my Access database weekly. They don’t change a whole lot but I need the changes to be reflected in my database.

The way I have it setup now is through a linked table, then I use a “Make table query” to filter the data.

My problem is the filtered table has relationships set up that I have to delete then recreate every time I need to run the “Make table query” because it has to delete the old table first.

Is there a better way to make this happen?

Importing Data From Two Tables

Mar 31, 2005

Hello everyone,

How can I transfer or import data (NOT TABLES) from two related tables. The two tables have parent-child relationship and have multi fields. I tried to use the import command but it imports tables rather than data. but I want to move data not the whole table. I can use copy and paste command but I couldn't copy both main data and sub data at the same time. I could be able to copy the main data all at once and paste them but they don't take the sub records along with them unless I copy them record by record and pate them to the corresponding file, which is very time consuming for a very big data.

Is it possible to create a command that imports data from two tables at the same time? Note that these tables I am trying import data from have the same format but different field names.

These data are collected using the same application but by different users at different locations and I want to transfer them to our main data base. If any of you can help me with this I really appreciate. Thanks.

Importing Data Into Linked Tables?

Aug 11, 2005

I'm trying to perform a massive data dump. I have about 1,000 records that need to be added into my database. This is coming off an Excel spreadsheet.

I don't know if this is possible:
I have a table, tblTorders, which is linked to the table, tblItems.
When I open the tblTorders, I can click on the plus sign to expand and see the related data in tblItems.

How can I import data to populate the fields in both of these tables? I can't use the import function because you can only select to import it into one table.

Do I do it through a query.... I'm not sure where to go on this one.

Thanks so much

Tables :: Importing More Than 255 Columns Of Data

Sep 14, 2013

I have a project concerning lists of external files. The spread sheet holds the source data on a document per line basis. Each row contains vital data ClientID, ClientName, DocDate, DocDescription, MainPage, Page1, Page2, Page3.... up to Page 585

I have done previous work where importing up to 50 columns has never been an issue.

For some reason in this case I am unable to import more than up to 255 columns and also I lost all the reference data past column 30.

I have tried importing directly to a SQL Server Db - same issue

Access 2010 and this in 2013

Convert File Before Importing

Mar 12, 2008

All, I have code to import multiple text files into multiple tables in access 2003 There are about 15 tables It works but I have two problems. 1st I was converting the files from another source to text and placing them into a folder where I created import specification files. The problem is I need to automate the conversion part. How do I use VBA code to look at the file and add the extension .txt so that the program can find the file in the code. Here's part of my code. I didn't list all 15

'Import Text files into corresponding tables

DoCmd.TransferText acImportFixed, "PhoneNoProblems Import Specification", _
"PhoneNoProblems", "X:DB_Working017_ErrorsTextFilesPhoneNoProblem s.txt", True

DoCmd.TransferText acImportFixed, "StrangeZipcodes Import Specification", _
"StrangeZipcodes", "X:DB_Working017_ErrorsTextFilesStrangeZipcode s.txt", True

In the textfiles folder, before the filename with .txt exist I have to add the .txt How do I add it automatically before the import?

2nd I need a cleanup routine to remove the additional lines in the text files like: list and sort which can appear randomily throughout the text files.
I hope I've explained this so you can help me
Thanks

Importing Or Appending Data To Normalized Tables

Jul 16, 2005

I'm fairly new to Access, but have set up a database containing 8 normalized tables. I would like to know if it's possible to update all those tables by importing an Excel file into each table, or importing the Excel file into one Access table and then appending that table to those 8 tables. AND STILL MAINTAIN THE RELATIONSHIPS. The Help directory only talks about importing or appending into one table.

Tables :: Importing / Extracting Data From PDF Files

I am building a database for a coworker. For one table, he'd like to extract data from different companies' financial reports, specifically a Schedule RC-B (schedule of securities). The format it comes in is PDF, but there are options to download XBRL, SDF and Taxonomy. My computer doesn't recognize any of these other formats. Plus, I'm guessing each company will have a slightly different format, so I don't know if there'd be an efficient way to set up an automatic import. Any way for importing/extracting data from these files?
