Tables :: Linking Two Databases To Same SQL Table
Oct 14, 2014We have a case where there is an append query in one database that is is updating another database table. We have moved all the tables to MS-SQL (2008) using the SSMA tool. We were wondering if it would be possible to create a new linked table in the DB where the append query is. Of course we cannot use the SSMA tool again since the table already exists on the MS-SQL server.
Normally when I try to make linked tables from Access, it wants to create a ODBC connection which we are not using.

Jan 7, 2015I am creating a database for the company I work for. My boss wants it to have every information possible stored and accessible through the one database. Right now the time sheet that we use is a hard copy that the guys fill out and turn in each week. Before the database started I created an excel sheet for them to start using. My boss wants me to link the excel sheet to a table in access. The way it would work is each of the guys would fill theirs out and email them to me by Friday. I would then link it to the table so that we could easily pull information we needed through a query.
I read online on the office support website that you can link a spreadsheet but then access does not store the data and the data if needed to be changed had to be done through the excel spreadsheet. Doing it like that made it sound to me that each time sheet that was turned in each would would create a new table. I was hoping there was a way to have one table with all the times on it using an employee number as the relationship key. The biggest thing though is that the guys have to use excel to fill out the time sheet because getting each guy access is "not an option" .

Needs to lookup listi n Field A
and get correct UDC1, UDC2 etc...

Jul 7, 2014I have a database with two tables. tbl_job_information contains all the contracts info etc. tbl_data contains all the relevant work data. The first table is restricted to certain personnel, whereas anyone has access to the second table. Both tables have a column called 'job no', in the first table it is a primary key, in the second just a field. I would like to make it impossible in the second table to change the data in the 'job no' column to anything that is not in the same column in the first table. It this possible within the tables themselves, or would I have to do it via coding and forms?

The aim of this (as part of a bigger solution) is to create an entry system where users can enter jobs in, assign a resource to the job and give the resource a cost. The conditions are that resources can be on more than 1 job, more than 1 resource can be on a job.
Obviously entering in resources manually is not a good solutioon (eg having 20 resource fields) as it is now. I want to create a relation between tables to achieve something better.
Let's say I had (for illustration sake) 2 tables, one which is a list of people and one which is a list of jobs. I want to be able to assign a person to a job for x amount of time (defined by a start date and end date in the job table) at cost y.
So we could have a field for the people table which would relate to the job id and a field for rate in the job db. However, people can be on more than 1 job (eg after doing one they do another) and there can be multiple people on a job (having one field for rate rendering it useless)
How can this be done in the most efficient way so that any job could be looked at historically and have the relevant rates etc? Would I have to create another table with rates relating to the job ID and person ID? This would allow for multiple resources per job and to have a rate assigned for each resource.
eg if person ID = 1 and job id = 1 then fetch rate etc and display in a list, and to calculate total cost simply sum all rates where job id = 1?

Table Not Linking To Query
Sep 25, 2007I am pretty new to creating relationships between tables. I have a main form with subforms embedded. I tried running queries from the main form and they run just fine. I also run from the tables linked to the subforms just fine. however, when I try to run a query for a report that takes data from the main form and joins with data from the tables linked to the subforms all the data cells are blank. I have a linking table which is also blank. All the forms are linked by the same program ID number. Any ideas on how to resolve this? Thanks

Sep 12, 2014In query design view, I have added a query with column (nameA) of names and a table with a column (nameB) of names. I am linking these two fields (nameA and nameB) which contain names. The names are spelled exactly the same so I should get results. Both fields are of the same data type.
But even when I add only the field with names from the query (the field called nameA), I don't get any results.
What is wrong here? Are there restrictions about linking a query to a table?

I need to create something where for each team name 9in tbl Team Info) I can map them to the tasks that they undertake (in tbl Process) and assign a percentage of time then spend on each task. Each team could map to several different tasks.

Dec 3, 2012I have 2 identical database in terms of structure but it differs in data.
Basically I would like to import data from subDatabase to mainDatabase and ensuring that there are no duplicate records.
I have used the "link to datasource method" through importing the tables to have the "updating" function.
However, this method also means that the records in mainDatabase are also imported over to subDatabase which I do not want.
Is there a method to ensure that the records are shared/update one way only? (i.e. import from subDatabase to mainDatabase and not main to sub?)

Sep 26, 2012Currently trying to build a database for customer management and order placement/tracking. Want to set a couple of rules so that if I for instance click yes of billing and shipping address the same that the database will automatically fill the shipping address with the data I inputted for the billing address in the same table.
The other issue I can see I'll run into is, I want to be able to select one of the company ID's (made up of a three letter abbreviation of the full company name) in the product ordering table and it will automatically fill in the rest of the customer data (phone, email, address etc) data into that form.

Apr 15, 2014I am doing a project where we are collecting home owner data and information on all the dogs in the household. The data for homeowner has an autonumber primary key because no field is unique or has been consistently collected. I am struggling to link the data for the dogs to the owners because an autonumber primary key will not work since not all homes have dogs. I need to have this set up so that people who are not tech savvy can look up each homeowner (or dog) and get the dog (or home owner) information. And to make things even more fun we need up to 15 potential dogs per household each of whom will have 18 different pieces of data collected.
It looks a little like this (and you can see my not matching ID issue):

Database Size Limited To 2GB / Query Multiple Database Without Linking Tables?
Sep 7, 2011I'm trying to set up a simple query that links four tables. However, the tables are extremely large, all in excess of 1.5GB each so I had to split the tables up into four separate DBs. I've tried the following with no success:
1) Link the 4 tables in the DB which contains my primary key. This quickly inflates increases the file size above 2GB and won't let me go any further.
2) Build a remote query to connect the four tables. This looked promising until I tried to run the query and it became evident that it only knows to point to the last database source that you specified.
I'm running everything locally on my C drive. The data source are simple text files (1.6 million rows) from the FDA website.

Mar 18, 2013I have been asked to design a database to replace our old excel sheet to log one of our customers server builds. It a four noded system and i require a seperate log for each node serial models of parts etc, qa checks.
I intitial started by just using one table but forgot the limit was 255 rows, i need about 600 - 700. So my plan is now to transfer to indivial table for each node. Then, a general table named Main for all my other details.
Although this seems simple, i now have the annoying task of being able to link them all together and produce a single PDF file to send to our customer whilst only entering our system serial number once to produce this.
My basic understanding will be to create a System Serial Number field in each table a link it via relationships, but if i produce a report with everything i need would it input my details for all four nodes? If so how would i set this up?
I will be splitting the database once completed and then making a ACCDE file for my techs to use.

With different things needed from each type of customer, once in Access, it became needed and easier to create separate tables- one for international and one for domestic. However, each customer needs their own unique id - and I need a way to link or relate the tables in a manner that it will not allow duplicate customer numbers between the two tables.

May 19, 2005Question for someone..... I was looking at the "LinkTables" in Access..... I see that I can link one database to another..... When I do this I can add the table to my relationship window... I have not played with this too much.. But looks interesting. Now, all the info I might add to this linked table is stored in the other database??? If this linked table is also linked to other tables in the other DB can I use those in queries? Not much covered (that I can find) in the Access help files on this sort of thing.

Jun 29, 2007I have a table with job info like: job #, job name, job addy.
I would like my end query to look like this: job #, job name, job notes.
I want the query to list all jobs, job names, and job notes for a particular week(we have a weekly meeting on the status of our jobs), so if I were to query the jobs for 6/26, i would get: job #, job name, and job notes for that date as fields in my query.
I am not sure how to accomplish this. Should I make a seperate table that contains job notes? If so, how would I accomplish this and create a relationship between the job info table and the job notes table?

Oct 4, 2005Excuse me for sounding extremely dumb, but I have a question that is really bugging me. I have created a database using two tables. The two tables are called User and Assets. In both tables I have set the primary key to be the field Username. I have also linked these two fields.
I have created a form that is my interface for the database and can add and delete from the table (User). I now want to insert a sub form into my form, that displays the contents of my second table (Assets) and reference's the field Username. Hopefully this will enable me to display my table (User) in the Form, whilst only displaying the relevent data in the subform (Assets) for the particular user.
I'm sorry if this sounds confusing, but I would really appreciate your help ...
