Tables :: More Than One Unique Values - Prevent Entry Of Duplicate Combination Of Fields

1. I have a database (see attached) with three tables all of them with the same fields. The first three are numbers (InCo_No, Proto_No, Year_No). Each of these fields (numbers) can be the same in the other table(eg. Year_No), but the combination of the three cannot be.
How can I prevent the entry of a duplicate combination of these three fields?
2. I want to have a form to fill the three tables separately, depending the values in the other fields.
We are working on an Access (2007) database that is on a SharePoint Site (2007).
Currently the form is operational, but there is one last thing that would be nice to have.
The table is "Updated Headcount" which contains "EMP_ID" which are unique numbers stored as text.
In the event a new employee is entered in the system by another user on this site we would like to prevent any duplicate "EMPID"s from being entered and saved on the SharePoint, we would also like to alert the user and prevent the data from being saved.
All data is currently bound, so once the user makes a change it is made, no submit button is required.
We are running into some difficulties in doing a dlookup from the value entered and comparing to a column in the table.
TABLE - UPDATED HEADCOUNT COLUMN in UPDATED HEADCOUNT - EMPID FORM CELL user will input an EMPID - newEMPID FORM CELL used for a dlookup to compare what user has entered to what is already in the table - duplicateEMPID
So below is what we are trying to do, we are sure there are a few commands missing....
Have read through all the threads related to this topic and can't find anything to help. Just want a message box to pop up after entry of first and last names in a form if the string already exists in the database. DLookup works wonderfully for validating on one field, but adding the second field is driving me crazy - Can I use DLookup to check more than one field? The following code gives me the error: "Run time error '2001' - You canceled the previous operation."

I am using a data entry form to enter new data into one of the tables.How can we prevent entry of duplicate records? Duplicacy shall be checked on the first two fields only. Please help. regards bijon
So now, I'm using the code below to prevent duplicate name entry and it is working great - EXCEPT when I enter a first or last name which contains a ' (ie, O'Tool, O'Malley, O'Hern)...anyone got any ideas for me on how to make this not happen?
The error I get is:
Run Time error '3075'
Syntax error (missing operator) in query expression '[Last Name]='O'Hern' And [First Name]='Lori'.

I have a client database that has recently had multiple duplicate entries. I need to reduce or negate this erroneous activity. I have a client table where I record amongst others, the following;

I believe that to prevent duplicate entrie via form I have created an additional field called "unique" given it as a unique index which I want to have populated with the joined fields first_name & last_name & dob (IE johndoe01/01/90), and then as user enters a new client it wont allow a duplicate.
However I need to fill all the existing customers (3600+) with the relevant joined existing data. If I create an expression I can cajoin the fields in a select query but when I try to make an update query the same syntax comes up with empty fields.

However as time goes on we may want to add new skills to the depts - ive used dcount to check if the data exists in one field before however how would it be possible to check to see if the data combination exists over deptid and skill
how or what function (DLookup) should I use to prevent duplicate records based on multiple fields? I want to look at data in three fields that can't match existing data in those three fields. It's ok if one or two of the fields match but not all three.
I am creating essentially a contact database; however, I want to be able to upload new groups into the database from time to time. Some people in the groups may already be listed somewhere else. If I am using an ID number to identify each separate profile; how do I prevent a duplicate profile entry? Will I have to manually check each one? Also if I use the auto-number function, how do I tell access to create a new set of numbers that are different from ones previously assigned? I anticipate about 30 separate groups adding up to around 5,000 names. I don't really care to check that many manually.
I have thought about this for days now (and nights) and I have simplified my problem below. (I even bought a book) I have three tables: 1, 2 and 3. Table 1 = a, b and c Table 2 = x, y and z Table 3 combines table 1 and table 2; ax, ay, az, bx, by, bz, etc. Table 1 and Table 2 are both One to Many with Table 3. The Table 1 field and Table 2 field are a ‘unique’ index combination. My Problem: It would be very handy to produce a list of the ‘unique’ index combinations that are not in Table 3. That is, the ‘unique’ index combinations that aren’t used yet. You could do this by trial and error, but is there a Query you can run that will give you a result that you could then Append? An Unmatched Query on the Table 3 / Table 1 contents will point out a complete lack of either a, b or c as will the same Query on Table 2 for missing x, y or z. A query with the two non-linked tables will give every combination, but is this the best way to do it? It works by default when you use it to append table 3, but is it the best way to do it?
I'm currently in the process of doing a an overhaul of the database including a table, some odd 17,500 records long.
What I need to do is to create a unique identifier from the existing part number, almost like an autonumber, but it only increments when there are duplicates. What I mean is that there would be for example, there would be five records of say, part 000135.
What I'm trying to get at is, how I would have to code to grab the existing part numbers (all formatted to be 6 digits), add an extra 2 digits to be its unique identifier, and then save it all to a Unique Identifier column, that I created.
An example of what I want is say, I have part numbers 000135 and 000136. The numbers would go up from 000135-01, 000135-02, 000135-03, 000136-01, 000136-02.... The dash is not as important as implementing the 2 digit unique identifier.
I am building a database to capture monthly statistics on a number of items. I want to ensure that users don't enter statistics for the same item for the same reporting period. I found the following instruction, but can't make it work:

I was using the following code on a field (ItemCode) that was indexed to prevent duplication of records. The intent is that the user will get an error message that a duplicate exists before they enter all the data for the record and get the built in error message that Access 2003 provides when an index violation has occurred.

Now, the index for this is based on two fields (ItemCode and Question Group). I would like to display the same message before update but don't know how to include the second field in the syntax.
Hi, I have a situation and i do not know how to handle it. I am developing an application for a lawyer. In the data base i have the following tables: Files, the people table (that are involved in a lawsuit), and other tables. The problem is the following: in the people table, beside the primary key i have another unique element that is social security number. In the files table beside the primary key another unique element exists: the number and date of the file (File 1 from 15.02.2006). A lawsuit file can have more law terms: today it has one law term and maybe next week another law term so i must have the same file many times in the table with the same code and another date, but i cannot add the same file many times in the data base because a file has data about one person and the social security number of the person is unique.
If anyone can offer me a solution it would be good. Thank you!
I have a table - (Table A) that has 2 fields X and Y. I would like to write a query or script to make two new tables based on the unique values found in field X. In other words, all data where field X = 1 would be written to a new table called "1" and all data wehre field X =2 would be written to a new table called "2".I would like this done automatically.

I have a question I've been trying to figure out with no luck. I have 2 fields, companyname and zip, these 2 fields may have duplicate values or they may be uniquei.e.

what I need to do is delete all of the duplicate records where both companyname and zip match. Is there a way I can do that with a query?
How i would best combine values in a table to produce a 'primary key id number.'
For example: the first letter of a city in the ID and the next number available/auto number - Portsmouth -> P233
I know i can create this in a query however i want it as the unique ID for that record entry in a table. If that doesn't make sense i can try to elaborate some more.

The login names need to be unique to the domain so the integrity cannot be breached. This has to fit into one table (although the domain is actually being pulled from a look up table so is in fact a numerical value) for ease of form creation.
I am undertaking an analysis of corporate mobile phone data based on data from the phone provider. The base data consists of a number of monthly text files at transaction level for voice calls, data usage, billing/tariff information, international calls/transfers etc. I have set up VBA code to import the text file data into a number of Access tables.I would like to have a way of joining these tables but the only common field is the phone number (a text field with the groups of numbers separated by hyphens).
I confirmed that joining the tables on the phone number text field does not work.My idea was to create an additional table with just one row for each phone number and link that to the other tables by the ID in the new table. I was able to create this table [PhoneNumbers] (by creating a totals query of the phone numbers from the main call transactions table, I then dumped it into Excel and then imported it into a new Access table with an auto-generated ID column).My problem / challenge is how to get the ID column from my [PhoneNumbers] table to appear in each of the other tables so that I can join them effectively. In the Excel-world, I would have used a vlookup function.I even thought of performing this as an interim step in Excel but there are too many records / rows in some of my tables. It seems that the dlookup function is not what Im looking for and even if the IIF function is suitable, I cannot get the syntax to work for me.
