Tables :: Possible To Update A Table In Split File?
Nov 21, 2013
I have an Access 2007 file that is 'split' so the tables are centrally stored on the server.
How do I update one the linked tables stored in the back-end file with a table from another Access file?
If I import the 'new' table it is not 'linked' - it is embedded with the Access file I am working on.
What is the correct way of doing this without corrupting the data?

Hi.
I'm about to move to a back end / front end system, from a single database file. Before I do so, I want to make sure I have all bases covered so to speak.
My back end file will reside on a server. I am aware that path names are sometimes changed by network administrators without warning.
From tests, I notice that, if the path to the back end can't be found, one cannot open the front end database file at all (Access 2003).
My question is: if my back end file gets moved, or the path changed, how can I get into my front end file to update the linked tables.
Many thanks in advance.
Mat.

I'm working on recreating my church's records in access and was originally wanting to take people from the Visitors table and automatically move the to the Members Table (and same with Deceased & Moved), but after some searching found that's not really do able. So now my question is, can I have a master table that has everybody (visitors/members/deceased/moved) and then split that into different tables while keeping the main table (that way I can go into the main table and reassign the person)?

My db is split into front-end and back-end. In the f-e's Relationships schematic, I can see the relationships as they were defined at the time when the db was split, complete with the one-to-many symbology.
I can add a new table to the b-e and set its relationship as one-to-many, enforcing referential integrity and cascading as I wish - and the schematic (in the b-e) reflects that.
In the f-e, I can then use the <Get External Data - Access Database> function to link to the new table, and I can add the new table to the relationships diagram in the f-e. I can also drag and drop to link primary and foreign keys (within the f-e), but cannot select one-to-many. I'm OK with that, as I understand that the relationship is within the b-e, and this is just a diagrammatic representation.
But I can see the one-to-many relationships between the tables which existed when the db was split, and I would like to be able to see the new table's relationships in a consistent fashion. Updating the linked tables via the Linked Table Manager does not do the trick.
Surely I don't have to split the database again in order to achieve a consistent diagram - do I ?

I have some vba where I'm importing a text file and splitting it out into a table. For the most part its working just fine.
But I have a line of data that I need to pull out the string right after "Old" - Murphy and right after "New" ZMurphy
Acc# : 111111 This is test data, Person : 22222 Old Murphy New ZMurphy
I'm thinking Instr() could do this but I'm unable to get it to work.
I am using Access 2010...

I'm trying to import/merge/update a table from an xml file.To import I'm using the following code:
Code:
Private Sub Command0_Click()
Const acAppendData = 2
Set objAccess = CreateObject("Access.Application")
objAccess.OpenCurrentDatabase "DATABASE LOCATION"
objAccess.ImportXML "HTTP OF XML FILE", acAppendData
End Sub
This works perfectly to import new records, however what I also need it to do is merge/update the data. So the xml file will contain the correct data and any amendments need to be made to the Access table.

I have a report that is generated daily that is a TXT file that is also the has the same file name each morning. One section out of this file is needed in a database that compiles and sends out reports to our customers. This section of the TXT file is variable in length, but is always preceded and ends with a specific text string that I can search for. It is also formatted in columns that are always the same width.
I currently have to hand enter this section into the database every morning. Not the easiest of tasks... I would like to get this automated.

Was wondering how i can import data from a file to a table in different fields. The data inside the file is described with the number of characters and space's between. The attached file has the data.
For example in the file attached, the first four characters represent a data like 'ticket number' and maybe the third line 6 to 10 charcaters represent 'name of a passenger'.
Now how do i import these data to a table into respective fields in a table.

I need to export a table to .txt.
I need to have the field names as well as the records.
Some records are part numbers with a leading zero like 043095.
Some records are part numbers with dashes and alpha's like 123456E-789.
I don't think I can use .csv because some records have a part number description uses comma's like "some text, more text, even more text".
I don't need all the hyphens and pipes for the grid work.
The problems I have so far are:Exporting to .txt without formatting doesn't bring over the field names (I know they made it this way) Is there a work around other than exporting the data and then adding all the field names in with a macro in Excel? I can do it but, what a pain.
I see dropping of leading zeros = 43095 in .txt and .xlsx
Exporting to Excel sometimes scrambles the part numbers and they come out like this 5.91E-09 when it should be 123456E-789 (so I'm losing data).
Exporting to Excel also puts qoutes in the description field like "A very large part" (extra clean up necessary).
easiest way to get rid of the hyphens and pipes and leave it in .txt form?

I am trying to update a record value in a table with a user supplied value.A user logs a test against a serial number (there are multiple tests per serial so the tests are numbered) and logs how many repetitions will be performed in that test. If a failure occurs and they have to abort the test, I want to change the number of repetitions from what was supposed to run, to what was actually run. So the user enters how many tests were actually run and the code is supposed to find the matching serial number and test number in my Test Runs table and replace the Run Scripts value with the user supplied update.
My code runs without error but the record doesn't update. I've changed my table value types from numbers to text without result, I'm thinking there might be a problem with quotation marks? So it's searching for serial "123-321" instead of 123-321?
My code is below:
serial = Forms("Enter Run Failure").Controls("Serial")
runNum = Forms("Enter Run Failure").Controls("Run Number")
abortNum = Forms("Enter Run Failure").Controls("txtAbort")
Dim SQL As String
[code]....

So a while back I created a database which I use to keep track of my companies large list of products. It is very simple only 3 tables, 1 query and 1 form. After running into a problem with copying and pasting updates on each computer in the office I decided to split the database on a network drive. This worked for a bit, however I had to add new fields and modify the form, which corrupted the file. Luckily I had a backup before the split.
As far as I could tell all I had to do was modify the backend file and make a new front end. However it seems like it is not as easy as I thought it would be. How do you modify a split database without corrupting the files or using a non-split copy?

I have a project that in Access. I'll be handling a survey file that will maintain answers per customer. The visit to customer is done monthly in a year, which means that a customer can have 12 visits in a year. My problem is that if I will maintain this project for the next five years or more, I have to maintain another field in my table that will block the duplicate entries.

Warehouse inventory system in access 2003. I have set up two primary tbls: Equipment and ETO (Equipment transfer order) both have an autofill primary key and the equipmentID is part of the ETO tble. There is a one-to many realationship from the equipment to the ETO. There are other tables (4) in the system but they are used as look-up tables and i'm not concerned about those.
Equipment Table layout: EquipmentID, ModelNumber, SerialNumber, Mfg, ProductName, CurrentLocation, Category. This table is used as the repository for all of the equipment that needs to be tracked and inventoried. It will not change much with except the CurrentLocation changing as the stuff is shipped around (in Store, In Warehouse) and of course when new equipment is being added.
ETO table layout: ETOID, ETONumber, FromStore, ToStore, OriginStore, ETODate, ModelNumber, SerialNumber, MfgID, ProductName, LocationID, CategoryID, EquipmentID. This table will be used (I hope) to basicly track the equipment as it moves from store to store to warehouse and back out again.
Process: Locate a peice of equipment by either SerialNumber or ModelNumber in the Equipment Table, change the location depending on it's status (coming in, going out) then i need to somehow update the ETO table with that ModelNumber, SerialNumber, Mfg, category, etc..But put in the FromStore, Tostore, OriginStore, ETODate, etc..
I have tried both the update query and append query from both tables but I can't get the results i need.

I have a database with 7 related tables. Now the main table is called STUDENT. I am essentially creating a report card system and have broken down each part of the report into another table. Now to make it easy for teachers I have created a form which they can search for a class and in a datasheet all the students plus their ID numbers come up along with the spaces for them to enter their grades etc.
The problem I have is this. How can I get access to look for any updates from the STUDENT table and apply this to the other tables as it would not do this automatically, even though they are linked one-many I have copied the data from the main STUDENT table into each other table just so theres a reference for a teacher. Is there any magic button or something that I can make to do this so all extra student names and IDs are added to all other tables?

I have created an Access 2000 Db, and have gone through the motions of splitting the Db via the Splitting Tool. Since I have done this split, I have added forms, queries, and reports to the Front End. I have left the Back end table structures alone.
This is where my problem comes into play. To enter data into the Db, I use the forms. After splitting the Db, I assumed that the data would be stored in the tables in the BE. An issue had just presented itself and I went into the BE table structure to add a field to a couple of the tables, and when I opened the BE table in the datasheet view, I noticed that there were no records. I then became curious because when I run my reports and queries, the information is present. So I opened the FE tables and what do you know, all the data I have input since the split is housed in the FE tables.
I already attempted to Update the Table Links, but that did not solve the problem, and the data is still in the FE.
Can someone, anyone please help or offer some suggestions on how to resolve this dilemna.
Thank you in advance,
DtF

I have access that is required to be accessed by multiple users and register their activities which is reflected with the tables in the background and form sends also the time that they are putting their activities.
So i split the tables and put them in a share folder in one of the PCs. however, the problem is about the timing and dates is not correct usually, and i found out some of the PCs their dates are not on sync. I asked and found out sometimes it is required to change the timing in their PCs.
Therefore, i was wondering instead of fetching the timing from their PCs why not to put the timing of share PC (i.e. timing/Date of the share PC which has the splitted tables)
so can i do like this:
User PC: (Form1) & user activity => Share PC: (Split table) & take time of the share
How can i do that?!

I have an Employee Records table with 29k records that I originally imported from an HRIS system. Lets call this table ORIGINAL table. Each week I export a new Employee Records table from the HRIS system as it contains the latest updated information. IE - New hires, terminations, rate changes, etc. Lets call this table NEW table. It likely contains new records as well as we hire 100+ people per week.
In the ORIGINAL table, I have added fields that are not included in the NEW table. I need to update the records / fields in the ORIGINAL table with the NEW table, but need to keep the ADDED fields.Originally my plan was just to overwrite the ORIGINAL table with the NEW table until I added the additional fields to the ORIGINAL table. I thought that I could export the added fields in the ORIGINAL table, import the NEW table, and run and update query based on the EE ID#.
