Tables :: Splitting Database - Front End Does Not Link To All Tables In Back End
May 28, 2013
I am splitting a database and have created the Back end already. When I create the front end and link to the tables on the back end... The front end does not link to all the tables in the back end. The list that comes up when creating the linkings does not show all the tables in the back end. What would cause this?

I have split database (B/E is in the SharePoint library, F/E has users on a local PCs). Sometimes, when I update/add data (does not matter if it is via form or directly in the table) it looks OK, but when I re-open the database, the data are gone.
Problem is that I cannot catch the moment when data were not saved (sometimes data are saved, sometimes not). I can point out this: if I re-enter the missing data, primary key continues subsequently, it looks like the data have never been entered. I tried to use script
Code:
If Me.Dirty Then Me.Dirty = False
on "On Close" form event, does not work.
B/E is linked by VBA code and it looks OK (no error, Link Manager shows correct path). I suspect interrupted connetion to the SharePoint but I don't know how to check it. I implemented VBA script co keep open connection to the SP but the issue persists.

I've just successfully spitted a DB of 30+ MB of size to front end and back end.
However the size of front end is roughly the original one and the size of back end is some KBs. Shouldn't have been the exact opposite considering that data are stored to the back end?

I currently have a front-end/back-end database, but at some point in time one of the tables has been modified and whenever the front end connects it comes up with a parameter request for a field that no longer exists. I have narrowed it down to MSysQueries, where there is a reference to this field. Is there anyway I can avoid this or change/repair the system table?
Compact and repair doesn't work unfortunatly.
Thanks

Is there any particular reason I would choose to use
DoCmd.RunSQL "insert into...
Versus
CurrentDb.Execute "insert into.... ??
I am using an unbound form on the front end of my database to populate the backend tables (multiple tables). Some forms only have a few fields, while other forms have about 15 fields with 3-4 tables updating.
I am okay using the DoCmn.RunSQL , but I keeping reading on the forum that others chose CurrentDB.Execute and it has me thinking.
My database is stored on a network drive with only on front end.

Using Dropbox to host a split database. Ulimately I would like to create a run version for users with the back end held in a drop box directory.
As an unsplit database everything is working fine on dropbox records are saved in a timely manner and great.
Once I split to FE /BE only some records are saved on the BE and some are dropped. Was getting conflicted copies of Back end but manged to stop this happening but the records were noit on either copy.
Gave each user their own FE (on a drop box directory) linking to a BE in a sub directory on the same dropbox.
The key issue is that not all users have access and I don't want them to get into code so want to aim towards a run version.

I have a database with a front end and back end (tables on the server) that was recently converted from Access 2003 to Access 2010.
For some reason the back end keeps hanging and I have to constantly compact and repair and there has been major data loss on a regular basis.

I have a Database that has been split into two.
Back-end for all the data.
Front end for all the forms and queries.
The front end has been saved in a accde format and distributed to 20+ users. They have all saved this onto there computers and this is used as an application. The users complete a form on a weekly basis on the application and then save. This then saves into the back end.For some reason I have noticed that a few users submission randomly do not save. For the life of me I cannot understand why.All users have saved them into the back end in the past but every now and then submission for users do not save.

Hi.
I'm about to move to a back end / front end system, from a single database file. Before I do so, I want to make sure I have all bases covered so to speak.
My back end file will reside on a server. I am aware that path names are sometimes changed by network administrators without warning.
From tests, I notice that, if the path to the back end can't be found, one cannot open the front end database file at all (Access 2003).
My question is: if my back end file gets moved, or the path changed, how can I get into my front end file to update the linked tables.
Many thanks in advance.
Mat.

I have split my database in Front End och Back End, and both are password protected. The Front End has been converted to ACCDE.
When I try to import to Excel from Front End and/or Back End using database connections I receive a message telling me that I am using an invalid password (even though I use the same password when I encrypt/decrypt FE and BE). I've tried using Access import, ODBC and Microsoft Query. (In some cases I 'm also prompted to set a username, which I do not know which it should be since I haven't set one in my database (except the automatic "admin"))
How do I go about to make this work?

I'm trying to split a table up because I now realize it won't be able to do what I need in the future. It wasn't designed properly at the outset, and I'm trying to correct it now.
This is a database of pregnancies and deliveries.
The single table does not cater well for multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets, etc), and also I foresee problems when mothers come back in future for another delivery.
Therefore I am trying to separate data into 3 tables: Mother, Delivery and Baby.
This is because each mother can deliver more than once, and each delivery can have more than one baby.
I have set up a trial database, with just a few fields in each table to see if this works. An screenshot of the table relationships is attached.
The primary key of the Mother table is linked to the Delivery table, and ditto the primary key of the Delivery table and the Baby table.
I'm not sure how to migrate the data over, in terms of the primary keys of each table, because in the new tables, these should be an AutoNumber field, so that they are unique numbers.

Hi, all.
I have a "client/server" split Access 2003 database with an Interface file containing all the code/forms/queries and some system tables and also a Data Backend file, with all the data tables and table structure.
This is being deployed to multiple sites, each getting their own version of the backend, so sites will not be using the same backend between them all, rather multiple users in each site will all share that site's backend file.
Since users will deploy in different network locations, etc. they will have to re-link all tables. Is there a meaningful/user-friendly way of doing that without relying on user's knowledge of "Linked Table manager", etc.?
Thanks!

I simply want to link a table from one database to another but am getting an Error -1002 with the error description: "'|' is not a valid name. Make sure that it does not include invalid characters or punctuation and that it is not too long."
I have tried just creating a basic table with one field and linking it to another database and still getting the error. It happens when I compact and repair on close.

I would like a way to auto-generate a pdf when a user clicks a link based on available tables within my database.
Basically i have developed a pricelist database and our reps need a printable pdf version of that available items and there attributes.
I have done some research and it appears that visual studio and crystal reports may be what I am looking for. This is an access web database that is accessed housed in sharepoint.

right i've been trying to think how to do this and i can't work it out... really shouldn't have got myself into the situation in the first place but i'm hoping its easier than i think so here goes
i have two tables TBL_Batches and TBL_Jobs, there are batches of jobs, many jobs to one batch so the tables are linked in a one to many relationship
there is a field in TBL_Jobs called job type which can be typeA or typeB and all the batches contain a mix of typeA and typeB jobs
the end result which i need to achieve is to have two entries in TBL_Batches for every one i have at the moment, one of them containing only typeA and the other only typeB... so where i have batch1 i should have batch1a and batch1b remove batch1 and all the foreign keys in TBL_Jobs changed so they link to the appropriate new batch in TBL_Batches
any ideas?
