Update Required In A Text Box?
Jan 9, 2008
Hello everybody
Hope all is well! I have one text box among others in a form that require the user to update data in that particular text box every week. I already put a msgbox in the Textbox_On Got Focus to remind the user to update the data. However, the user still can ignore and move on to others text box. Please advise HOW to FORCE the data to CHANGE/UPDATE something in that text box.
Thank you so much for all your help!
Regards,

The data base I'm creating deals with Account numbers, I have a check box asking the end user what type of account they have Cell or no Cell, If they check yes to cell two other check boxes come up Primary/Backup.
Private Sub Cell_Account_Click()
If Me.Cell_Account = True Then
Me.Primary.Visible = True
Me.Backup.Visible = True
Else
Me.Primary.Visible = False
Me.Backup.Visible = False
Me.Primary = Null
Me.Backup = Null
End If
End Sub
I would like to make it so that when clicking the Cell Account that it's required to select one or the other Primary/Backup?

Private Sub Command39_Click()
Dim t1 As Date

db.Execute("update tblTest set tblTest.Date2") = t1
End Sub
But when I press the button I get:
Run time error '424'

I have a table "Customer Plans" with 100s of rows of data with 3 columns
'Name', 'Company', 'Plan Type'
I want to create a new column or table "Customer Details" with the the column name 'Customer' under the following criteria:
If the data in 'Customer Plans.Company' Column meets a certain criteria as in = "Corp&Gov" or "Head Office" or is "blank", I want it to populate the new column/table "Customer Details.Company" with the corresponding data in the 'Customer Plans.Name' column
e.g.
if
Name = Anna B
Company = Corp&Gov
then
Customer = Anna B
I want to populate 'Customer' with Anna B for that record and so on down the list of data in 'Company' column.
If however the 'Company' column doesn't meet the criteria, I want to populate the new column/table 'Customer' with the current data in 'Company'
if
Name = Anna B
Company = Dealer
then
Customer = Dealer

I know how to make a text box entry "required" such that one cannot exit a record until a value is entered but cannot figure out how to make it required only if another field on the form has an entry. None of the form events seem to support that when focus moves to another record as far as I can tell. What I want to do is display an error message if the condition is not met on exiting a record but to also remain on (or go back to) that record so the required text box entry can then be made.

I need an event for when a text box is updated. Not by the user typing into it, but when VB code or something like Dsum() changes its value automatically.
What event can I use? Does one exist for this?

I have a form with two combo boxes, one for shipping point and one for destination point. I then use a text box to concatenate the 2 values together. All of this is working fine on the form. I now want to store this value in a freight table. I'm using the table as the controlsource for the form so I have tried the following code but it doesn't work.
Private Sub Text27_AfterUpdate()
Me.Route = Me.Text27.Column(0)
End Sub
Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks for you response.

Hi All,
Thanks so much for your help in advance. I’m working on a Form1 that has a combo box with Row Source coming from a query Just like:
NAME ITEM_ID
Smith 10011
Smith 10012
Scott 10022
Clark 10015
Clark 10016
Now, I want to be able to update the Item_ID value to text boxes txt_SN1 and txt_SN2 once I click on the combo box and select the name “Smith” then show 10011 in txt_SN1 and 10012 in txt_SN2. I’m not sure if this can be done with record set or just with column values from the query.
Can someone help me with this problem? Your help will be highly appreciated.

I'm trying to have the user select an item from a combo box which gets its values from a table with multiple columns. Once something is selected in the combo box the form will auto-update the adjacent text box to a value in the same row (different column). The combo box is called 'Media' and the text box is called 'Tape Cost'. When you select a type of tape in the combo box the adjacent text box should populate a value determined by the second column of the table. Instead I'm getting a message that the, "Method or data member is not found" and it highlights the red text below.
Here is the code I'm using:
Private Sub Media_AfterUpdate()
Me.Tape Cost = Media.Column(2)
End Sub
Not sure what I'm doing wrong here. Thanks!

right I have auditing system in my database that tracks any changes made to any records. it logs it on a separate table and i show it on a continuous form.
right my problem is that I have loads of check boxes and text boxes on my main form on the form that records the main form I have a field call "new value" this is a text box but if I change a checkbox on the main form it will show -1 or 0 in the new value field on the recording form but I would like it to say yes or no I have tried the following
Code:
Private Sub New_Value_AfterUpdate()
If [New_Value].Value = -1 Then
[New_Value].Value = "yes"
End If
End Sub
this only works if I enter -1 manually but the data is entered automatically after the record is saved on the main form ...
I have also tried on enter before update I get error but now I need it to change on new entry...

I have a form to view/update records. it works great but now i want to enter an ID# into textbox6 then enter in a Name into textbox8 and have it update a table. the table already has the ID#'s and what i want is for the textbox's to add in the Name based on the ID#.
I tried making qryUpdate to select tblMainData.ID# and tblMainData.Name then to use criteria [Forms]![frm1]![textbox6] and textbox8 respectively. i entered this in a select query, then changed it to an Update query and added tblMainData to the "update to" field. but it keeps saying "you are about to update 0 fields"...

I am creating a form for 3rd-party service contracts, and I have two tables called tblServiceProviders and tblServiceDescriptions. tblServiceProviders has a 1-to-many relationship with tblServiceDescriptions; i.e., each Provider can have multiple Descriptions (real world: product offerings). So for example, ServiceProvider "Acme Corp" might have ServiceDescriptions "AcmeCare", "AcmePremium" and "AcmeInstall". My database is normalized, so tblServiceProviders has an ID field that is related to a field called ProviderID in tblServiceDescriptions.
Each ServiceContract includes, in addition to customer name and some other stuff, one and only one ServiceDescription. The ServiceDescription field in the ServiceContract form is a drop down box called comboSvcDesc and it contains all of the ServiceDescriptions in the database. I also have a non-editable text field on the form called txtSvcProvider.
What I want is to have the name of the ServiceProvider ("AcmeCorp") automatically populate in txtSvcProvider whenever the comboSvcDesc box is changed. So for example, if I change comboSvcDesc box from "WidgetCare" to "AcmeCare", I want txtSvcProvider to change from "WidgetCorp" to "AcmeCorp".My thought is that I should be running a SQL join query to get the related value "AcmeCorp",but I can't figure out how to make this work in VBA.

I realize there are several threads already dedicated to this particular topic but my situation is slightly different... First, my tables are set up like so:
tblStudent(studentID,LName,FName,MI,Gender)
tblRack(rackID,roomID,studentID,rackNumber)
tblRooms(roomID,roomNumber)
There are 3 racks to a room and a total of 90 rooms. A room can hold up to 3 students. A list box holds values that I have typed in (the room numbers). I went with typing them in rather than pulling them from a query because of the way my tables are set up. If I pull from a query as the tables stand, room numbers show up 3 times, once for each rack. I want to be able to fill in text boxes with information on students assigned to the room I choose from my list box (FName, LName, etc...) I'm kind of at a loss here on how to go about getting the info that I want. Using the column property to populate text fields is probably going to be much easier but a query is needed (I think) and using a query causes room numbers to show up 3 times in my list box... Anyone want to throw me a bone?? Thanks! :)

I have a textbox on a form that displays a calculated number with regards to input from other text boxes.
I need this calculated number to update to a corresponding field within a table.
I have a button that updates the information, but the calculated field will not update.
I have an "=" expression written that does all of the calculating. When I put this in the 'control source' it calculates and displays on the form perfectly, but will not update the table. If I change the control source to the field within the table and then move the "=" statement/expression someplace else....the field is blank on the form, but I can manually input a number and it will update to the table.
Follow?

I have a database that I imported as a comma deliminated csv file. To keep my original text comas intact I changed all the commas to semicolons before I created the csv file and imported the data. I now have a data base with semicolons in place of the original commas.
I am trying to use the update query function to change all the semicolons back to commas in one of the database fields called File_name
I have a data entry where a record in the File_name field looks like this for example
Chevrolet cavalier; red
and I want to change it so that it looks like
Chevrolet cavalier, red
I run an update query with the criteria set as Like "*;*"
and this finds all the records which have a semicolon in them
I have set the update field to "*,*"
but all this does is to change the record from
Chevrolet cavalier; red
to
*,*
Is the query update the way to go and what is the syntax that I should be using in the Update field just to change the semicolon to a comma and leave the other text intact?
thanks Mark

We use the before update events of text boxes for error checking and normally that works exactly the way we want it to. The focus remains on the text box until valid data is entered. However, there are a couple of situations where we would like to be able to release the user from the constraints. One being a button that clears the form and the other being a button that closes the form without saving the date.
In these situations the action of the before update events are just an irritant. Imagine a user who starts to fill out a form and just started entering a date, when he realizes he doesn't need to enter the record. He clicks on the close button and then is forced to complete a date for a record that will never be saved.
If there were just some way of determining what event triggered the before update event, i.e., determine that it was the close button, we could tailor the before update event code to handle these cases. Is there any way to do this?
We realize we could avoid this by postponing the error checking until the record is saved, but we want to provide the user immediate feedback on data errors.

So I have this code in an afterupdate event in an unbound text box to update the value of a table if the textbox is updated:
Code:
Private Sub txtCustRepID_AfterUpdate()
'Go to Calls table and find original value for CustRepID
'Fin the Call ID first
Dim CallIDVar As Long
Dim ContactIDVar As Long
Dim CustRepIDOr As String
CallIDVar = Forms![Contacts]![Call Listing Subform].Form![CallID]
[code]...
This code works well when entering numbers in the text box but it returns error 3061; "Too few parameters. Expected 1" when along with the numbers there is a letter in the textbox.The error happens in this part of the code:
Code:
'Accept change and add new value to table
CurrentDb.Execute _
"UPDATE Calls " & _
"SET CustRepID = " & CustRepIDNew & " " & _
"WHERE CallID = " & CallIDVar, dbFailOnError
The underlying table has text as type of data for this field.

So I have a table with 2 fields.The first field has the addresses to multiple hyperlink paths to folders on my computer.In this field the display text matches the hyperlink paths.In the second field I have the desired display text for field 1.I have tried using an update query to either:
1) Change the display texts of field 1 to match field 2 while preserving the hyperlink path
2) Add the hyperlink path from field 1 to field 2 without altering the display name.
I cannot get either one to work. Upon updating field 1, I lose the path, and upon updating field 2, I lose the name.

Hi,
I am using a update query to update a table from another table. This query however will works only if I set the allowzerolength to yes in the table design otherwise validation error message will appear. This means that I cannot use the "Is Null " anymore because this empty space " " can appear. Is there any a way i can filter out those empty fields in the query design then? Thank you for your help.

Hey Guys,
I'm looking to create a "Same As Billing Address" check box that would automatically udpate the address in an order to reflect the customer's billing address.
I understand how to sync a combo box to an option group ( -- great article by the way)
I Guess what I'm looking to do is:
1. Sync a "Same As" Checkbox to multiple text boxes in the form (Unit, StreetAddress, City, Province, Postal) such that these fields are UPDATED (writen to) with the same information as the billing address
2. [U]IF the "Same As" Option is selected, I need the updated fields to lock, allowing no further update... but must by unlocked if the "Same As" option is NOT selected.
Please help me out with this one guys.. I really need it.
