I've created a database which works fine and i've tested it extensively on my machine. It is saved on a network drive which other users have access to. I've added a simple security log-in procedure (which I picked up from a sample posted on here) which only determines what buttons the different users can see on the switchboard which takes them to the different areas of the database. The problem I now have is some of the forms aren't opening.
Other Users who try and go into the forms that they have access to - even some of the generic ones cant open the actual forms as it crashes and comes up with the generic error message - "Microsoft Access has encountered a problem and needs to close".
I cant understand why this is happening. The security measures are only linked to the main switchboard and it works fine as it opens up all the other relevant switchboards as required. It's just certain forms on the other switchboards that refuse to open. I hope I have described my problem adequately and someone has encountered it somewhere or knows what I'm talking about and can help. Please let me know if you need further clarification.
I want to make a simple FrontEnd for my database for users to open reports to print them. I don't want them to mess with the linked tables or queries feeding into those reports. I want the front end to display a list of every report in the database that they can load up and use.
I have two databases that have been split, and both back ends are in a shared folder on the server that only a few people have authorization to access. One of the front ends is accessed off another shared folder, and the other is saved to each person's desktop. They have been up and running for months, and I've had no problems with users not being able to access data from the back end.
The other day, I requested access to this protected folder for four people, which was granted. But, since the time it was granted, neither database will open unless the user has authorization to access the protected folder. They get an error that says the database is already opened exclusively or they don't have authorization to view its data.
I've created another test db and split it into the same folder, but my users are getting the same error.
Any help you can provide would be much appreciated.
Hi I am looking for help related to the “You do not have exclusive access to the database at this time. If you proceed to make changes, you may not be able to save them later.” message when trying to change the design. I have done a lot of reading on this forum as well as googled the subject but have not found anything regarding my specific question. I find that there’s a whole lot of information regarding workgroup security and how to set up and troubleshoot. However, my needs are a bit more simple – I think :) We have a database that is shared among 5-6 users during a couple months out of the year. There are no log-on id’s required and everyone just opens the file and works as needed. Everything works fine; we have no problems with users changing or doing more than they are supposed to. Therefore, I don’t want to break anything by complicating matters…it works and we’re happy with it. The only annoyance is that during these couple months, someone has to make occasional changes to the database in design mode. Of course, we need everyone else out of the database so he can have exclusive access. This entails calling and/or running around asking those people to close the file and sometimes physically checking computers left unattended with the file open. So my question is: Is there any way to find out what users or workstations have the file open? This would make it so much simpler. All the users are on a Windows Server 2003 network and the files reside on a server. Perhaps this is more of a Windows question; I couldn’t think where else to post it! If anyone could point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!
Greetings. When I create an Access database on my company's "secure" server (through a PIX box), I get this message in a dialog box when I try to open the database again: "Open File - Security Warning. Do you want to open this file?" It then gives the file Name, Publisher (unknown publisher), Type (Microsoft Office Access Application), and From (the file path and name). The bottom of the dialog box has this message: "While files from the Internet can be useful, this file type can potentially harm your computer. If you do not trust the source, do not open this software." When I click on the "Open" command button, the file opens just fine.
There are a couple of things going on here:
1) When I open this same database or any other Access database on another of my company's servers that is not protected by a PIX box, I do not get this dialog box.
2) When two users try to access an MS Access database on the "secure" server, the first user will get in, but the second user will not. The second user will not get ANY warning messages -- nothing happens. This occurs if the second user tries to open the database by either double-clicking on a shortcut on the desktop or by double-clicking on the file name in Windows Explorer. Note that the second user CAN access the same file if s/he starts up MS Access from scratch, and then chooses FILE>OPEN from the main menu.
My goal is to be able to let multiple users access the MS Access databases on the secure server by either double-clicking on the shortcut icon or by double-clicking on the file name in Windows Explorer.
I thought perhaps that the "unknown publisher" issue might be part of the problem on the secure server. So I created a certificate using the utility "SELFCERT", went into the database, went into Visual Basic (Ctrl-G), went into TOOLS>DIGITAL SIGNATURE and assigned the digital signature, and re-saved the file. I then exited the file, went back in, and the dialog box still pops up saying the file's publisher is "unknown publisher"! If I go back into Visual Basic, the database is clearly marked as digitially signed by me. I don't know why the initial dialog box is still showing that the file is not digitally signed.
If anyone has any thoughts about these issues (multiple users not being able to access the same Access database, and why my file is saying it is still not digitally signed), I would appreciate your input. FYI, I am on a Windows XP workstation and our company users Windows Servers.
I'm wondering if there's any way to find out who has a database open.
I've saved the file as an ACCDE for the users and kept the ACCDB file as my working file. Whenever I make changes to the db I need to save a new ACCDE file on top of the existing one. In order to do that, I need to ensure no one has the db open. Half the time I need to track down 1 of 15 people to find out who it is that has it open so I can kick them out and save.
I don't have any login features, but could use the POD # that each cubicle has associated to their computer if Access allows that...
Hi, very new to access and chucked in at the deep end. we require a database which will be used by multiple users to place orders. the users are at different locations although they all log on via terminal services so connection issues are minimal. i understand that we require a fe/be database because of the users. the users will only work with forms and reports. they should not be allowed to see the other users orders and the form needs to automatically put the users id into the order. the only way i can see to achieve this is to make a custom form up for each location. would i be right in assuming this? if so, how would i prevent one location from opening up another locations form? infact, i wouldn't want one location to know that there are other forms for other locations. any help would be appreciated. thanks
The database has to be handled by a web service and/or a web appliction making the comma delimited option occupy more server time breaking down the string into usable user_ID's. But (and this is probably my actual problem) if i was to impliment my second idea, I'm not sure what I should make the tables primary key or the best way to relate it to the main user table.
My initial thought is to just have a, technicaly useless, ID be the primary key and impliment a one(User) to many(friends entries) relationship... but im a bit of an access n00b so thought i better come ask for some advice.
when i open a form i want to open another frm at the same time. i have a main form with some buttons in it. when i click on a button and a form opens then i am not able to click on a button to open other forms from the main form.
Is there any option to kick out users after a certain time of idle.
Say, a user login my ms access and don't logout from database and he don't do anything in ms access. I want automatically logout from ms access after a certain time he is idle.
Hi. I manage to create Users and permissions with no big problem. But before do that, i thought that when i created those permissions some of the users which they will work for, they will not have even a view of TABLES QUERIES FORMS e.t.c How i can hide that from them? I did that by Properties and set the option button to Hidden, but imagine if you have 50 to do that. Then if i go back to do some modifications then is necessary to unhide in order to check. Is another easiest way of prohibiting users to view. Thank you.
I enabled security on an .mdb which included several users that are in the Full Data Users group. After I did this I needed to add a new form to the application, so I logged into the application and added it. However, though the admin group and the Full Permissions group can access it fine, the Full Data Users group cannot. I have double checked all of the settings and have even rebuilt the .mdw file to no avail. Any thoughts?
I have a database that it has 2 forms. Form 1 shows list of received letters Form 2 shows list of send letters Now database has been splitted and back end is on the shared drive and front end there is on each computer and myself and other users have read/write access to the shared drive and me and other users can see all the records. .Now I would like to add something like a check box field to the forms. When I tick the check box for each record other users cannot see that record on the form.
I have set up a split database and it seems to work perfectly. I have created a report on each users FE and this works fine. It inputs their own contact details on the report. This was done manually before sending the FE to the user just using ="text here" in the design of the form.
What I want to do is add an extra field to the table (and link to this via the form each user has) and have this populated automatically with the users name. This is so we can see at a glance which user added which record.
Is there a way to have this happen or would it be a case of having to pick your own username from a combo box? Can I do something with each users FE form which will add their name when they add a record?
I am currently updating our old Access DB 2003 to 2013 and wanted to make a few modifications along the way.I would really like to allow users to leave notes for each other on a front page. This front page form does not have any underlying table to it as it is only used as a switchboard. My question is, is it possible to have some sort of memo or text box that users can enter notes into that can be easily viewed from the front switchboard and then they can delete/update the notes as required?
i have a pop up form that users need to fill up whenever they need to Add New Records. everything is working fine. BUT, what should i do that in the next time the user will click the Add New Records it will not show the previous items that have been added? since it is added in the Main Form already, no need to show in the pop up Form again once they wanted to add new records. Once they are still in the pop up form, they can see the newly added items BUT once they exit the pop up form, they cant see those items anymore in that form instead it is in the Main Form already.
My database is tracking Job/Project information. The users must assign the Job Contacts which can be both internal and external (ie: Contracts is a Client Contact, while Engineer is an Internal position)..
tblContactTypes which defines each of the 10 types of job contacts. fldTypeID: fldTitle fldClient fldInternal 1 Contracts True False 2 Engineer False True 3 Other True True
The Job Specific data is stored in tblJob_Contacts
fldJobID (PrimaryKey) fldTypeID (from tblContactTypes) fldEEID for Internal Contacts (from tblEE) fldContactID for External Contacts (from tblClientContacts)
My question is this...How can I force the user to enter the Contact information for Contact Types 1,2,3, and 4 while leaving the remaining contacts types as optional?
I would like a form with combo boxes for the first four Contact Types which must be assigned for every job and then a continuous subform where the user can assign the remaining contact types if needed.
Initially, I planned to store the first four Contact Types as separate fields in the main table (tblJob) - however, distribution lists are needed and it makes more sense for all the contact information to be stored in the same table.
I have a form that I'd like to allow users to export to .xlsx via a button on the form. However I'd like to make it so that once the button is pressed, they are prompted to select a folder location before the export takes place.
I thought I would find a lot more 'how to' on this specific issue, but haven't had much luck.
On the access form I have designed , I need to give optional search option to the users. I have the following search options on the form (screenshot attached):
From Date To Date Port Vessel Voyage ---------------------
The query is as follows:
SELECT dbo_VESSEL.VESSEL_NAME, dbo_VESSEL.VESSEL_CD, dbo_VESSEL.VOYAGE_NUM, dbo_VESSEL.PORT_CD, dbo_VESSEL.DEPART_ACTUAL_DT, dbo_VESSEL.DIVISION_CD FROM dbo_VESSEL WHERE ( (dbo_VESSEL.VESSEL_CD Like [Forms]![VESSDAT].[Form]![txtvessel]) OR (dbo_VESSEL.VOYAGE_NUM Like [Forms]![VESSDAT].[Form]![txtvoyage]) OR (dbo_VESSEL.PORT_CD Like [Forms]![VESSDAT].[Form]![txtport]) OR (dbo_VESSEL.DEPART_ACTUAL_DT BETWEEN [Forms]![VESSDAT].[Form]![txtfromdept] And [Forms]![VESSDAT].[Form]![txttodept])); ----------------------
However, the form still prompts me to enter values for all the boxes and still doesnt show the correct data.
I want to restrict the users to only be able to access certain tabs in the ribbon .example "user1" cannot access the external tab and the create tab, but can access all others.
I am trying to set up a password on a for different users to have to enter pins to enter data. When a user selects his/her name from the combo box the next field will be something like pin. When they enter the corresponding pin this will allow them to edit and start or continue (if they left) fill out the rest of this form.
The reason being this way is that if one of them goes back to a previous record done by another user (which I want them to be able to view) they can view it but cannot edit it because they do not have the users pin (or password). Is this able to be done, only allowed to edit or create a new record if you enter your pin every time.
I would like to create a form that will show the users connected to the database. It would be kind of a tracker who opened the database to work on some cases. The form could show all users from the datbase from top to bottom and to the right a green or red round dot that she/he is active opened the database or not active (closed the database or did not open it still)
I was thinking that it could be applied when the main form opens and that form captures the login from windows into the "tracker" form.
I guess it will only work when the "tracker" form is first open. If the "tracker" form is open later, how to capture those logged in earlier?
I currently have a button that opens a report. the report pulls from a query that has parameters set to "fromdate" and "todate". instead of using dates and parameters that pop up as blank text boxes, I would like to click the button, have a form pop up with a combo box to select all of the options available (currently 23 options) and then click a button to make a report that only displays the record (1-23) selected. I do not need any time constraints because as the databases get updated with more records, there would be more than 23 options to choose from.
