Wizards Do Not Work Under XP For Users With Restricted Security
Jan 26, 2006
The problem occurs on a WinXP machine with Access 97.
When Access is run as a Power User everything works fine but when it runs under a user account that is a standard "User" non of the wizards function properly.
By changing some file permissions I can get the control, form and report wizards to work but the Import Data wizard still fails.
I'm sure this is a permissions issue and can be fixed by changing the security settings for some registry keys or files, but have no idea which ones.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I run a school library database (Access 2003) and want to set up a password logon system so that different users can get at different parts of the program - e.g. Administrator (everything), Librarian (can add and delete records but not change the database design), Student (can only access certain areas, read only).
I've tried using the security wizard to set this up, which seems OK until you then open the database again. I would expect to then get some sort of log-on screen next time I open the database, but instead it opens normally, but then won't let me do anything because I "don't have permission". I had to restore a back-up copy.
I must be missing something obvious here. Is there a place to look for instructions? Couldn't find anything useful in the help screens.

I have to make it so user group cannot modify/update/delete data in tables, but con do the same in forms. Yet if I uncheck those in 'permissions' it's not possible to change anything forms either
For some reasons management doesn't want tables to be in diff database

I have a Db that is secured with a workgroup.
If a user puts a password in for themselves, is there any way an Admins person can see it, or change it?

My database is used by a few users on a shared drive in "read-only" mode so they can't change any data.I set a scheduled task to copy an updated version of the database (which I edit) every morning.
The problem is that when the users forget to close the database file I can't overwrite it.For this purpose I wrote a small code that quits the application at 00:00 using Application.Quit.The code WORKS when I test it on my computer, but every morning when I try to open the file I see that it is opened by another user since I also open it as "read-only" - meaning the code didn't work...getting the code to work properly OR get a better solution to be able to overwrite the file even though it's opened by other users.

I am receiving an unexpected message when a user tries to launch a form that the user does not have permission for via the Access Security-Permissions setting that I have configured.
I am trying to set my Access db up so that Guest users can only access 2 Forms - the Switchboard and the Main form. There is a Maintenance Form and I don't want Guest users having access to it.
I have configured Security and created a Group named Guestgrp. I have also created a user named Guest that is assigned to the Users and Guestgrp groups.
The Users group is currently set up with NO permission for any form.
Here are the Guestgrp permissions for the forms, db and tables
The following forms have Open/Run and Read Design permission
Switchboard
MainForm
The following forms have NO Permissions selected
Maintenance Form
The database permission is set to Open/Run
Table permissions
The Guest group has Read Design and Read Data permission for all tables
so here is what happens...............
My Guest user can log in and launch the Switchboard form and can launch the Main Form from the switchboard.
BUT......................
When my Guest user clicks on the Switchboard button for the Maintenance Form, the following message pops up:
There was an error executing the command.
Is this the normal way for Access to indicate that the user does NOT have permission to access a form? I am guessing/hoping that it isn't and if configured properly there would be a message indicating that permission is denied or something of that nature.
If anyone has any comments, suggestions on the error in my ways, I appreciate any comments/suggestions/clarifications.
Thanks

Hi,
I'm building a DB where I have multiple users. I would like to have all data in 1 table but only give access to records created by the individual user. Is this possible?
Alternatively, if each user has it's own table, how can I report on the sum of all tables.
Cheers,
Rene

I have never used wizards with access (or anything else for that matter). What is general view? Are they actually good news or do they get binned with witches and warlocks? I could use some of the techniques involved but where does one find an intro - preferably using access.

I'm somewhat new to Access, so I'm using the wizards to get me started to make forms and reports.
When you first click on the "Create Form by Using Wizard" it asks you to select the fields you want to use from the selected Table or Query. Unfortunately no fields show in the "Available fields" box.
I know I have fields in each table or query. I even tried to make a dummy table using their field names incase mine contained invalid characters.
I've tried it in both the Form wizard and the Report wizard.
The fields of all the tables and queries used to show up when I first install Access.
What am I doing wrong? Should I try to reinstall the program?
Thank you for your help,
Pam

In Microsoft Access 2000 I'm getting the following error message when I click on visual basic Event Procedure for the first time.
"There are no registered wizards of this type."
"Rerun Microsoft Access or Microsoft Office Setup to reinstall the wizards. If you want to preserve your security or custom settings, back up the 'workgrp file name here' workgroup information file.
For more information on backing up files, search the Microsoft Windows Help Index for 'backing up files'."
After I click OK on the error it goes back to Access. If I click the event procedure again visual basic opens up though VB the screen isn't what it suppose to be. The Object and Procedure pull downs at the top of the page disappear behind my toolbars and I can't get it to setup correctly. If I try to maneuver them correctly they still don't line up. This error seems to be messing that screen up.
This is only happening in one of my databases. In my other database the Object and Procedure pull downs at the top of the page are coming up correctly. If I start a new database that works fine too. I'm not sure why its doing it only on this database
I'm worried my VB is corrupted. Looking for any insight on what caused this and how to fix this.
Thanks!

Is it possible to restrict a one-to-many relationship so that the many side could be restricted to say 4 records? For example a student can take four courses (no less, no more)

Hi,
Im copying information from Excel to Acces. As I enter the information in fields in Access, this goes just fine. The problem is that sometimes I have to change the information I put in. So for example I first copied 10 record(cells), but now I discover that I have 20 records/cells. But Access refuses to let me enter more than ten. Does anywbody know why it does this and how I can fix it?
Thank u,
Stacey

Hello,
I have Customers recorded and a number of addresses associated with each customer.
They are in two tables linked by CustomerID and are shown in forms as frmCustomers & subfrmCustomerAddresses.
From frmCustomers, I open another form which records the orders maid by that customer. What I would like on this form is to select the customer address to be used for the order.
I can build a combo, but this shows all addresses on the database. What I would like for the combo to show only the addresses for that customer only.
I do not want two combos, one which selects the customer and then another which shows the addresses. This is not very user friendly to ask for the customer again. I would like one combo to show addresses for the customer on the form.
I would be grateful for any guidance on how I can achieve this.
Thank you.

I found a useful password protected form using input box and tried it successfully. However there are two issues. The password is not case sensitive and the password entered displays in the box. Is it possible to turn the password to case sensitive and the entered password is displayed as *s.

Dim strPasswd
strPasswd = InputBox("Enter Password", "Restricted Form")
'Check to see if there is any entry made to input box, or if

I have a report that has a link to open a a form "ProjectDetailsActive" to a specific record ID from the report. It works.
I have 3 subsets of users who have restricted access to the form "Project Details Active". By that I mean that when they open this form, it hides and rearranges some tabs, and disables certain controls. If a user from one of these 3 subsets tries to open the link to a specific record in the form, it does not work. The form opens to the first record available instead of the selected record. This is only a problem for these 3 user groups. For users who do not fall into these 3 groups, the filter works.
This is the only code in the form that does the restriction, but I don't know where the process is going wrong.
Code:
Private Sub Form_Current()
LoadBudgetPage
CancelRsn.Enabled = False
'detect number of line items for current project
Me.lblOrderCount.Caption = GetNumRecords & " line items for this project."
[code].....

I've read and gone though quite a few of the scrips and examples for creating logins and security and i'm getting to the stage when i need to have good understanding of the different methods.
Some of the examples whilst create a user login do not really allow for security within the database whilst the build in security wizard would appear to offer that functionality.
I am thinking that I will use the Workgroup file and that method. My question is am i able to utilise the fact that if a person 'AdamA' logs onto the database which is built into the workgroup security file. am I then able to take 'AdamA' to populate a table which records actions by a user? (I can't seem to find any thread or book reference to doing this)

Hi,
I have a table of users somthing like this:
User_ID
Name
Hobby
Favorite_Food
Blah
Blah
Blah
Users can be friends with one another and I need some way of logging this.
My 2 options (that i can see) are:
1) Putting a friends entry in the main user table then comma delimiting the User_ID's in the friend entry like so:
User_ID: 001
Name: John
Hobby: Frizbee
Favorite_Food: Cake
Friends: 002,004,010
2) Making a seperate table with multiple entries for each user like so:
User: 001
Friend 002
---
User: 001
Friend: 004
---
User: 001
Friend: 010
---
User: 002
Friend: 001
---
User: 004
Friend: 001
---
User: 010
Friend: 001
---
The database has to be handled by a web service and/or a web appliction making the comma delimited option occupy more server time breaking down the string into usable user_ID's.
But (and this is probably my actual problem) if i was to impliment my second idea, I'm not sure what I should make the tables primary key or the best way to relate it to the main user table.
My initial thought is to just have a, technicaly useless, ID be the primary key and impliment a one(User) to many(friends entries) relationship... but im a bit of an access n00b so thought i better come ask for some advice.
Thanks.

I'm an Access newbie and I'm having trouble restricting a combo box on a subform based on the selection of the combo box on the form. The combo box (Combo1) on the main form (FrmOrganisation) gives a list of companies, I want the combo box (Combo2) in the subform (SbFrmEmployees) to list people only from that company. I then have a subform within that subform that displays information about the employee.

We are creating a simple database to maintain driver license information for faculty, staff, and students who use cars from the university’s motor pool.
To do this, I have created two tables: tblDRIVER and tblLICENSE.
The fields in tblDRIVER are:
pkfDriverIndex
strLastName
strFirstName
strInitial
strAddress1
strAddress2
strCity
strState
strZIP
datBirthDate
The fields in tblLICENSE are:
pkfUpdateIndex
fkfDriverIndex
datDateUpdated
strState
strLicNumber
datExpirationDate
ynViolations
ynActive
Information about the driver is stored in tblDRIVER and the driver’s license information is stored in tblLICENSE. Periodically, we run a report that identifies drivers whose licenses are due to expire within a certain number of days. All this works fine.
My problem is that I am trying to create a lookup form that will load from a data entry form that will permit the Motor Pool Clerk to look up a driver by name and review the licensing information (which appears as a subform).
All this sort of works- I am using a combo box (based on a query) to look up a driver’s last name (which it does) and to populate all the driver’s information on the look-up form (including license information in a subform). Currently, the combo box locates the driver (including the unique index, last, and first names), and populates the form with first and last name but the rest of the information is not displayed on the look up form. Worse still, sometimes one driver’s last name matches up with the first name of the next driver listed in the table! This seems to happen only if a look up is attempted more than once. What gives.
Thanks for the help.

Is it possible to do this through vba. If security is setup for all the tables and a user goes in and creates a new table, can that table have security applied to it using code?
So maybe the creator of the table has read/write privileges but everyone else only has read only.
