Blank Combo Boxes Used For Form Selection
May 23, 2006
Hi All,
Am using a number of combo boxes as selection criteria for a report. The combo boxes are linked to a table, obviously there will be times when no criteria is required and will want to select "ALL" when left blank.
Is there a simple solution ?
Cheers

I have a form that I populate after making selections in two combo boxes but when I load the form the text boxes are already filled in with the first record. The combo boxes load blank, which is what I want.
How do I get the rest of the form to be blank on load? It is made up of text boxes and check boxes that are all bound. Will this only work if they are unbound?

(pls see end of thread for further clarification)
Hi
I am trying to achieve the following using 2 combo boxes
Box "a" is a list of courses from tbl_training_courses. The user selects the appropriate course.
Box "b" is a list of dates for each course from tbl_course_dates. Thus the user can select which date per course they want to book someone onto, and this value is then stored in tbl_training_record as the date the person is booked onto.
Its not working!!! It either displays blank values, or it starts a parameter query which I didnt want.
In the combo wizard, access refers to "remembering the value selected for later use" - i guess this might be what I need to use, remembering the value from the first and using it to select rows for the 2nd box based on identical courseID - but I can't seem to find this in Help file.
Any ideas anyone?

I have a form that house two record selection combo boxes, one for Customer Name and one for the Tracking number.
Both work as intended and return the correct record.
The problem is with the sort- I used a query for the source. That query will allow either the tracking number to be the sorted order OR the Customer name to be the sorted order.
I need code to make the sort order in the combo boxes on the fly, depending on which combo box the user selects.
Will you tell me how you would handle this?
Thanks, in advance-

I'm trying to build an database for aircraft operators. I've got the basic tables structure and relationships but I'm stuck on building an search form to filter records by user input.I've got following controls on my form (unbound):
1. AircraftType (combo box) from tblAircrafts
2. CompanyName (combo box) from tblListOfAircraftsOperators
3. TeailNumber (text box) from tblAircraftOperators
4. AirportNameSearch (combo box) from tblAirports
5. PassengersNumber (text box) from tblAircraftOperators
6. ManufactureYear (text box) from tblAircraftOperators
7. SourceSearch (combo box) from tblInfoSource
8. CountrySearch (combo box) from tblCountry
9. CategorySearch (combo box) from tblAircraftCategory
10. EamilToOperator (text box) from tblAircraftOperators
11. InteriorPhoto (Bound object frame) from tblAircraftOperators
12. ExteriorPhot (bound object frame) from AircraftOperators
I need to enable users to search for aircrafts based on those criteria. As I mentioned I'm new to Access and I don't have any advanced coding skills. I have a query build to perform the search and this is the code I've managed to write so far:
SELECT AircraftOperators.RegistrationNumber, AircraftOperators.PassengersNumber, AircraftOperators.ManufactureYear, AircraftOperators.EmailToOperator, AircraftOperators.ExteriorPhoto, AircraftOperators.InteriorPhoto, tblListOfAircraftOperators.OpratorName, tblAircrafts.AircraftType
FROM tblAircrafts INNER JOIN (tblAirports INNER JOIN (AircraftOperators INNER JOIN tblListOfAircraftOperators ON AircraftOperators.CompanyName =

Attached I have a database that I've been working on which has a form called "frmCriteriaSearch". It is based off of the qryCriteriaListBoxUpdate query. I am trying to get the listbox in the second tab of the results section to work. It queries fine for the checkboxes, but I cannot get the comboboxes to affect the query (unless a checkbox has already been selected)

I am trying to make a search option in my form header. Right now I have two unbound combo boxes (CboAccountsfilter and cboCourseName) that I can use to filter my records. Currently, I can use the drop down for CboAccountsfilter and a list of accounts will appear. When I select one, the corresponding Course Names will appear in cboCourseName. This works fine...Code below. I would like to take the filtering a step farther and add checkboxes to filter the data. I my form, there currently exist several check boxes (yes/no)...(Priority, Rep Top Target, Manager Top Target, ect). I would like to have the option to use a check box to filter. I.E if I had a checkbox in my header called PriorityFilter, if checked it would only bring up those records that met the two combo boxes criteria and was a priority.
Below is the code I have so far...it doesnt have anything for the checkbox because I am at a lost of how to get started.
Private Sub CboAccountsfilter_Change()
Me.Requery
Me.cboCourseName.Requery
Me.Check178.Requery
End Sub
[code]...

I have set up a query to give me details of employees names, the business they work for and where they work.
If I run it without criteria I get all of my records, as you would expect.
However, I want to be able to select parameters from combo boxes and then run a specific report of employees by location. I did have this working by accident a while ago but have changed quite a lot since then.
I have set up an unbound form with three combo boxes - Business, Business Unit and Location. Then a button for preview and print report linking to my report template.
I have refernced the controls in the relevant columns of my query as: [Forms]![FormName]![Control].
When I run the query I get nothing back and I don't understand why.

I have a form that allows users to search the database for records based on there criteria. The form allows the user to search, through combo boxes, by variables. The first is MAT, the second is Relocation Area. The search works fine when the user selects options form the combo boxes. However sometimes it is neccesary to leave the location field blank and only search by MAT. When the location combo box is left blank no records are found. Is there anyway around this. The SQL code for the query is below:
SELECT [Extract Data].[ID], [Extract Data].AREA, [Extract Data].[MAT], [Extract Data].[Relocation Area 1], [Extract Data].[Relocation Area 2], [Extract Data].[Relocation Area 3], [Extract Data].[Grade Score]
FROM [Extract Data]
WHERE ((([Extract Data].[MAT])>forms![Data Search]!SearchMAT) And (([Extract Data].[Relocation Area 1])=Forms![Data Search]!SearchArea)) Or ((([Extract Data].[MAT])>Forms![Data Search]!SearchMAT) And (([Extract Data].[Relocation Area 2])=Forms![Data Search]!SearchArea)) Or ((([Extract Data].[MAT])>>Forms![Data Search]!SearchMAT) And (([Extract Data].[Relocation Area 3])=Forms![Data Search]!SearchArea));
Any help would be much appreciated

Hello,
I have an unbound combo box in the header of a continuous form. The box is set to value list, and when you select a value, the recordsource of the form is changed. This works fine.
However, if I there are no records in the underlying form, the combo box is blank. If I check the value in the immediate window or the after update, I can see that it is set properly and contains a value, it just doesn't display it. I am using Access 2000. I have tested on Access 2003 and cannot replicate the problem.
I have found one post here (http://www.access-programmers.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=84423&highlight=combo+box+blank) on the topic.
I found this (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;287478) article on Microsoft which has my symptoms, but I am not opening a recordset.
Anyone know how to fix this??

I have a form that I would like to have blank fields when it is opened. I put the following in the "On Open" Event field of the form properties:
Private Sub Form_Open(Cancel As Integer)
DoCmd.GoToRecord , , acNewRec
End Sub
However, it does not work. I have an unbound combo box on the form for users to select from, in which all the records on the form will populate with whatever is selected in the unbound combo box. I thought this was the problem at first, but even if I remove that from the form, the form still opens to the first record. If I set the "Data Entry" field to "Yes" on the Data tab, that works, but then none of the fields populate when using the combo box.

Hello!
I have almost completed my database, everything I had originally intended to implement into it has been done, with some extra added features I popped in along the way. There is just one more thing I require assistance with...
My database is used for booking camera kits in and out. On the add booking form the user has to pick a "Camera Type" from a combo box. When they have made their selection, a form pops up with details of all of the components contained within the kits. The user can then check/uncheck the relevant components and close the form.
I have used a command button which prints off the data contained within the current booking form, and also the data contained in the form that pops up when the camera type is selected.
However, as there are more than 1 different types of camera, comprising different components, I need to be able to print off the form relevant to the kit type.
I do not know how I can do this as I have just specified the command button to print the form for the default kit.
I basically need some VB code which will print the form based on my combo selection, as my knowledge of VB is pretty primitive, I was wondering if someone could help me out :)
Any help would be appreciated!

Currently I'm working on a quote form in an inventory database. The invoice form consists of a main form with the customers information and a subform which is continous and is for selecting parts. Each part has multiple serial numbers which need to be quoted individually. Basically what I want to do is when you select a specific serial number on one record, I want it removed from the combo box on all other records in the continuous form. (either previous or new) How would I go about doing this?

Hi don't know if I'm trying to do something that can't be done but I'll give it a try
I have a combo box which selects a type of incident e.g. report, SIF, Phone call etc
and dependent on what is selected I would like to get access to automatically select which form to open so if report is open when the command button is clicked then the report form would be opened, when SIF is selected the SIF form would be opened etc...
How do I go about this.. I have only ever wrote code in excel, so can I have step by step if it involves code (which I guess it does) including where to put the code and even how to go about it
Thanks in advance to all

I have a search form with unbound combo boxes that uses the combo box values as criteria for a query. The Row Source of cboCategory is based on the query:
SELECT Categories.ID, Categories.Category FROM Categories ORDER BY Categories.Category;
When I start the form and I don't select a value for the cboCategory combo box, the query just returns all the values. This is great. The problem is that if I make a selection in the combo box, I have no way of reverting it back to that initial value that would make the query return all categories - if I erase the combo box the query returns nothing. So I have to close the form and reopen it.
I tried adding an "All" value to the combobox like so:
SELECT Categories.ID, Categories.Category FROM Categories UNION Select Null as AllChoice , "(All)" as Bogus From Categories
ORDER BY Categories.Category;
but it does not seem to work. It just returns nothing instead of all the categories. How can I add a value of "All" to the combo box that will return all of the categories?

In the Contacts Table there are two fields, the unique Contact ID key field numeric and the Contact Name. Like this:
Contact_ID; Name
1; Tom
2; Dick
3; Harry
In a form named "Selection" there is a Combo box that references the Contact table, and lists just the three names in the drop down (showing the Contact_ID is optional - I'm fine either way):
Tom
Dick
Harry
When the selection is made it will populate the field Contact_Ref the table called SelectedName.
Question: When the user selects the name I'd like the data populated in the SelectedName table to be the Contact_ID Value, and not the Name, so if Harry is selected the Value "3" would be saved.

In the Purchase Order details form a Supplier has to be chosen via a combo box. Based on that another combo box in the subform displays products only from this supplier (Products table is linked to supplier table).
I managed to let the subform combo show only relevant products using criteria referring to the main form combo box. Also other product data will show accordingly in text boxes. So far so good.
However when I close the form and reopen it the subform combo box is blank, other text boxes still show the right values. If I remove the filter criteria for the subform combo then all fields show all data correctly. (However the combo box is unfiltered again 8-/)
So somehow the 'criteria' prevents the combo to show the value that was previously chosen.

I manage to do case by case but i need it in a simple code because their will be many employees just to avoid adding case by case code for each one.
Private Sub Emp_IDCombo_AfterUpdate()
Select Case Emp_IDCombo.Value
Case "AM-001"
Imageholder.Picture = "C:UsersAMGDesktopam-001.jpg"
Case "AM-002"
Imageholder.Picture = "C:UsersAMGOne DocumentsHR & Admin DatabaseEmployee Picturesam-002.jpg"
End Select
I have employees table where all images location is saved in text field and i have a combo box on form which is employee id.
Tables relationship
Employees_table [PK] to Contracts_table [FK] via field name {emp_ID}
Fields Name
Combo Box name on form Emp_IDCombo and row source is SELECT Employees_table.Emp_ID, Employees_table.EmployeeName, Employees_table.Emp_Pics FROM Employees_table;
Text field is located in employees_table called [Emp_Pic] for images location.

Hello to everyone!
I have a serious issue to solve and I would like to ask for your help, as I just don't seem to know how and where to start from.
I need to make a database that will have 2 tables, say tbl_item and tbl_offer. The items table will have different cardboard dimensions and other characteristics (width, height, color, photo, price etc) while the tbl_offer will have different combinations of clients' cardboard requests.
The workflow is:
A client comes and asks for:
- two pieces of cardboard of 120x100 cm
- five pieces of cardboard of 135x90 cm
- one piece of cardboard of 110x125 cm
I want to be able to enter the client's request in a form and the form will do 2 things:
1. Store the clients request as a record in the table tbl_offer (for current or future referrence)
2. Create a report (out of the above record) that will be printed out and given to the client (but I suppose that's easy...)
Now tbl_item has different types of cardboard (their code names) along with different dimensions and price for each, for example:
Type|Width|Height|Price
----------------------------
001 | 120 | 100 | 10
001 | 135 | 190 | 12
001 | 110 | 125 | 11
001 | 110 | 100 | 16
001 | 150 | 100 | 12
002 | 165 | 170 | 17
002 | 140 | 105 | 10
002 | 140 | 130 | 18
002 | 170 | 130 | 18
The problems are
1. I don't know exactly how I can create a form (say frm_offer) that will give me the possibility to add many different cardboard types and save them as one offer to the tbl_offer. What I would like is to choose from a combobox (or any other similar function) the type (say 002) and by this selection a second combobox would be filled only with the available Width dimensions for this type (165, 140, 170). By choosing what I want from the width combobox, a third combobox would be available that would give me the available height dimensions for this width (if for example I chose Type 002 and Width 140, the last combobox would give me two choices, 105 and 130). After choosing the Height I want, I would fill in a text box of how many pieces the client wants and the form would also fill automatically the cost of all the pieces for that dimension (by taking the price/item from the tbl_item perhaps?). If 1 piece then it should say i.e. 18 for the 140x130 piece, if 10 pieces it should say 180. Finally, I want to add the photo of the cardboard automatically (pls note that same type of cardboards share the same photo) not at the form but at the report to be printed.
I have already looked in the Access FAQs section of the forum for the combobox techniques but I can't understand how I can apply them to three (or more) comboboxes plus the photo.
I can use Access only when little/no programming is required, and I am very much afraid that all the above will require a great deal of it, so I apologise in advance for my non-knowledge of programming :(
2. How do you think would be suitable to split all this data to tables? Is my thinking correct (2 tables, tbl_item and tbl_offer) or would you suggest something better? Will the tbl_offer get a lot of data that way? Mind you also that every once a year there is the need of updating the cardboards' prices (all will rise/fall at the same percentage) and, furthermore, we are talking for about approx. 100 different types of cardboards, each with about 15 different dimension combinations.
I am not sure if I had to post this message to the Tables section of the forum or here but I think here is better as the main problem is the form part.
Thank you all in advance and my apologies once again for the low level of my programming skills :(
Alexander
