Form That Searches Query With 30+ Linked Xls Files

May 4, 2006

I've been looking around and have found some posts that pointed me in the right direction, I just can't get it to work. What I have is 37 excel files of competitor cross references. There are 2 columns in each excel file, our number and their number. I have inserted them as a linked table in the db. What I want to do is create a form that has a field for every part number and make all of those fields a search field. That way they can type in any number and get all numbers back. I have created a query but once I get past 4 linked excel sheets then I get errors about a type mismatch in expression. Also I can't get the form fields referencing the query to show up when I open it. If I leave the query at 2 or 3 fields and use [Forms]![CrossRef]![txtItemNumber] in the criteria of our number in the query, it works. I get a window that pops up when I just open the query asking for a number, I type it in and the query returns the number and competitor numbers. Am I doing this the hard way?? Thanks for any ideas...

Linked Excel Files - Blank Leading Rows In Query Datasheet View And Reports

Dec 12, 2013

I decided to link Excel files and all is running fine except when I run a query on the file I get about 1,041 blank rows before my data is displayed in the query's datasheet view or any report based upon this query... the data seems good but why the leading blank rows? The data in the linked Excel sheet does not look like this and another Excel file's query looks fine and they seem set up identically!

Forms :: Combo Box Query - Form That Searches A Table To Show Certain Criteria

I have created a form that searches a table to show certain criteria. I am having trouble with a part where the table uses a checkbox and I am trying to use a combo box on the search form to return the results based on is it checked? Yes/No or both. When I test it I keep getting Runtime error 3075 missing operator.

The sql I am using is below and when I try and see where it is going wrong it highlights the line.

Code : Me.Filter = strWhere

Code:

.DBX Files Linked To ACCESS DB

Jan 23, 2004

I'm trying to link .DBX files to an ACCESS database. My problem is that the Dates are in this format. "20040123" and times are in "730" or "1630" and, all fields are TEXT. The Database is being used to help analyze production times and employee dates worked, so you can see I need to be able to perform calculations on these fields. Is there any way to translate them to Dates and times that ACCESS understands?

Thanks

Multiple Access To Linked .txt Files?

Feb 8, 2006

We've had a problem for quite a while with regards to multiple users being able to view/run, queries/reports at the same time.
If someone is running a query/report, and then someone attempts to use any other query/report that’s already using the linked .txt file they get the error message:

The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file ". It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data.

I've read various posts with regards to user rights to the folder which the DB is stored, which isn't the problem in this case (we have tested and set user access to all read, write, delete etc).

I've also read that .txt files are managed in a different way than most other file types, in that DOS controls user access rather than jet?

So my question is:
Is there a way round this issue with linked tables that use .txt file as there source?

Thanks

How To Enable Users To Use Wildcards In Their Searches On A Form

Jul 22, 2013

I have a Excel spreadsheet with an embedded query that pulls from an Access table. The users use a spreadsheet with an embedded query to search on a field called "Circuit ID", to bring up results showing the history of a given circuit id. Currently they have to enter an exact match, for example if the circuit id value is DHECHUIOY, they need to enter this exact value DHECHUIOY. They want instead to be able to enter DHEC and a wildcard character to bring back every value that begins with DHEC. There doesn't seem to be a way to do this in a spreadsheet with an embedded query.

I finally decided that it would be easier to create a form in Access

How I can create a form which allows users to search on a value using wildcard characters ? (the user enters the wildcard character).

I'm on Access 2012, Windows Vista

Modules & VBA :: Form With Multi-criteria Searches / Uses Strings And Filters

Jan 23, 2014

I have a search form with blank fields tied to a table, four criteria search boxes, and a button to take the input from the search boxes, search the table, and populate the results on the form's blank fields. As of now, it works as long as all four criteria boxes aren't null.I used filters to achieve this, and here's the code that works as long as all four boxes are not empty. (My criteria boxes are as follows: a textbox called "Keyword" and three combo boxes called HRCombo, BuildingCombo, and RoomCombo, and the fields they're tied to are as follows: "Item Description" "HR Holder" "Building" "Room") My first line "Me.Filter = ..." was broken up to make it easier to view.

Code:

Me.Filter = "[Item Description] Like " & Chr(34) & Me.Keyword & "*" & Chr(34) & "
AND [HR Holder] = '" & Me.HRCombo & "'" & " AND [Building] = '" & Me.BuildingCombo
& "'" & " AND [Room] = '" & Me.RoomCombo & "'"
Me.FilterOn = True
Me.Requery

I need it to be able to do the search no matter which combination of criteria boxes have input. Someone recommended using if statements to do the following: Create four strings, one for each criteria box. Use 4 if statements to check if the box is null - if it is null, assign an asterisk to its string, and if its not null, assign the value I used for the above Me.Filter statement to each box's string. Then, use Me.Filter and concatenate the four strings at the end. Here's the code I used for this, and, with my limited knowledge, I can't get it to work.

Code:

Dim StrA as String, StrB as String, StrC as String, StrD as String
If Me.Keyword is null then
StrA = "*"
else
StrA = [Item Description] Like " & Chr(34) & Me.Keyword & "*" & Chr(34)
End If

[code]....

Can You Use One Query For Two Or More Parameter Query Searches?

Oct 25, 2006

Hello everyone,
I have a form with an unbound control linked to a query. So I can put an item name in the control and the query returns all records for that one item. For example, in the query criteria I have
'Like [forms]![formname]![itemname] & '*').

Is it possible to use the same underlying query to search my records via the item name or by date. For examples,

Date Criteria in query:
IIf(IsNull([forms]![formname]![itemname]), Then Like [forms]![formname]![datename],)
So if the item name isn't entered but the date is then search by date. If the item name is entered then do not search.

Item Criteria in query
IIf(IsNull([forms]![formname]![date]), Then Like [forms]![itemname]![datename],).

Is this possible? I've tried it but the returned search remains emtpy.
any advice would be great,
thanks
Sue

Linked DB Query Which Allows Editing Of Data Through A Form

Dec 20, 2005

Hello,

I am a relative newby to Access, Can someone please offer a solution to my problem.

I have a DB which lists current order references, I also have a linked spreadsheet from a customer which references their Ref number to our S/order no & Item no.
I have set up the relationships for the common data between both tables.

if I create a Query from either table individually the data can be edited but when a query is created from both sources the data cannot be edited.
this also happens if the spreadsheet is imported to its own DB.

I would really like to create a form which displays both sets of data for editing, marking progress etc.

Can data from linked tables be edited in a form ?

Andy

Append Query Linked To A Form Problem?

Apr 14, 2005

Please can you help me find the issue to my problem that is probably hitting me in the face.

I have an unbound form to which i use an append query to post the data from the fields on the form to a table.
The table is set up very simple and has a primary key which i will never duplicate as you would expect.

Once i have inputted one lot of data into the form the command button runs the query and the data is posted to the table fine. The problem i am having is that the second lot of information i go to append the query refuses to add.
I get the validation rule violations error and it won't post the data.

If i close out of the form, open it again and input the same information the query adds it fine and again the second lot you get the error message.

i had this problem before but for the love of me cannot remember how i resolved it. I have had to keep closing the form after each entry to post the information.

Any help much appreciated.

Modules & VBA :: Refresh Query NOT Linked To Form Or Report

Oct 14, 2013

I am making a booking system where a user enters

StartDate, EndDate (Form Header)
House , Room , UserID (Form Footer)

The Header and footer are not linked. The Footer simply displays all the existing bookings for said ouse/Room/Date combination. (Date being all dates between the StartDate and EndDate) BUT (surprise, surprise)users don't look at this to check if a booking already exists.

Also - It seems pointless to have the users enter the same data (House, Room, UserID) in 6 times (one for each day that they want to book the room.

So I am trying to automate the process.

Therefore, I append each 'new' record (that the users adds in this session) into a temporary table. (House / Room / UserID / StartDate)....note, no end date because I need a separate record for each day.

I have a query that is supposed to check the EXISTING bookings with the temp table.
My code (paraphrased here for simplicty) says

do while StartDate < EndDate
- if Qry_CheckForClash returns 0 records then '(uses a dlookup)
- append from TEMP to BOOKINGS.
- - else
- compile an alert message to the user (appending the Room No and Date each iteration)
- In Qry_CheckForClash, increase the StartDate by +1
- end if
loop

My problem is that after the last step (increase StartDate by +1) the call to Qry_CheckForClash still returns the initial StartDate. But when I check the TEMP table, the StartDate has changed.

So how do I REFRESH or REQUERY a query that is not associated to a form or report?

Query Linked To Form, Problems With Blank Search Fields

Mar 20, 2007

I have a query linked to some combo/txt boxes on a form so the user defines which categories he/she is looking for then presses button and query comes up with relevant results. This works fine if the user inputs information that is actually there, but if they leave it blank it goes all wrong.

The statements I have in the query are as follows:

[Forms]![frmStockControlSigned]![comboSupplier]
[Forms]![frmStockControlSigned]![txtPurchaseOrder]
etc.

I thought the solution may be along the lines of this but it does not work:
=if([Forms]![frmStockControlSigned]![txtDate]=Null,[Forms]![frmStockControlSigned]![txtDate],"*")

basically i want to make it so the user does not have to enter criteria into evey box, thus if every search box is left blank it would show all records "*"

Query Linked To Form With Textbox To Search Multiple Fields

May 22, 2006

Right what im after sounds complicated but its quite simple.

I have a client database, in this database each client has 3 skill fields, i also have a form with a listbox and an unbound textboxes that are linked to the query so when the textbox is typed in the listbox updates.

Now ive sorted out the problem of not all fields showing it some of them are blank now the problem is.

When input text into one of the boxes the listupdates, now if theres text in two boxes. and theres data in one of each that matches it will show neither, because the query is looking for data that matches in both fields, now i need partial matches so it will give results of data in both fields.

not understanding fully what i mean?

i have zipped my db, if you open the db then open the form 'MainListRecTrades2nd' and fill in data in both primary and secondary trades that matches from the list you will see.

http://awilderbeast.com/CWSystem.zip

The solution i was thinking of would to have 1 textbox that searches all the fields and displays data from any of the fields in the list

Thanks for any help

Combo Box Based On Linked Table Needs To Pull Info For Sub-Form From Non Linked Table

Aug 31, 2007

I am trying to build a Form that will show an estimate (then eventually will be moved to a project if customer and employee aggree to price and project) in a Form F_Estimates is a M_Customers(Customer_ID) (Based on a Table) and thier info in a Subform. Also is the "projected costs" from parts out of the Parts(Part_ID) (Based on another Table) in a second Subform as a list that I need to calculate $$$ in
(Dang that still sounds evil and definately NOT understandable even after edit... so)

Here's some basic info

Tables

EstimatesandParts - Table
EstimatesandParts_ID : Autonumber
Estimate_ID : Number
Part_ID : Number

Parts - Table
Part_ID : Autonumber
PartNumber : Text (not a number due to some part#s have letters in them)
PartName : Text
Unit Price : Currency
Description : Text

Estimates - Table
Estimate_ID : Autonumber
InvoiceNumber : Text (again can have letters in it)
EstimateDate : Date/Time
EstimateTime : Date/Time
Employee_ID : Number
Customer_ID : Number
ProblemDescription : Memo

Customers - Table
Customer_ID : Autonumber
FirstName : Text
LastName : Text
CompanyName : Text
Address : Text
City : Text
Province_State : Text
Postal_ZIPCode : Text (CDN Postal codes are letter num letter...)

you can see the link table in the EstimatesandParts Table

Now I want to use that link to populate a subform in the F_Estimates form

Forms

SF_Customers - SubForm

(all boxes atm are text boxes on this form till I figure out the Parts section then will use same base for this so I can pick any customer in the database to be the customer for this estimate. Also will have ctrl button for making new customer with customer form and a refresh on Focus Gain bit of code)

FirstName
LastName
CompanyName
Address
City
Province_State
Postal_ZIPCode

SF_Parts - SubForm
Default View -Continuous Forms

(want it to be a list of parts that I can grab prices and descriptions from then in a bit of code to calculate a cost of parts)

Part_ID : Combo Box
Control Source - Part_ID
Row Source Type - Table/Query
Row Source - SELECT Parts.Part_ID, Parts.PartNumber, Parts.PartName, Parts.UnitPrice, Parts.Description FROM Parts ORDER BY Parts.Description;

(Pulls info from the table Parts for input into a list of parts to be used on that project)

PartName : Text Box
UnitPrice : Text Box

(here's where I run into problems due to the fact that the form is not based on the parts table but rather the link table EstimatesandParts so I can't propogate the info to the 2 other text boxes, ps I dont care if they cant be text boxes and have to be linked or some other type I'm not "set" just need to find out how to make it work )

(have tried a couple things to complete this task)

Me.txtPartName = Me.Part_ID.Column(2)
Me.txtUnitPrice = Me.Part_ID.Column(3)

(works AWSOME ... for ONE ROW then propogates the second selection to the first and second and third selection to first second and third and so on ...)

(tried to make control source for the txtPartName to)

=Forms!Parts!Partname

(Doesnt exist .. akkk, cant use ActiveForm either as it doesn't focus on the SubForm but the MainForm ... cry)

F_Estimates - Form

Estimate_ID
InvioceNumber
EstimateDate
EstimateTime
ProblemDescription

(all basic Text Boxes)

Employee_ID
Customer_ID

(Combo Boxes Select Customer and Employee from list of present ones of each)

SF_Customers
SF_Parts

(Both SubForms on the main form)

Now this is an Exerp from my entire Database I like to work on one small problem at a time and I have made this its own little database till I figure out the problem then I will bring the info I learn back into the rest of the database and go from there ...

Hope you can help I have a feeling I will need to make a recordset and go from there but I'm just not able to wrap my head around that for some reason

Thanks in advance for ANY and ALL help that I get from here

Searches

Aug 3, 2006

Hello,
I am creating a database for a client and have come across a small problem.
The basic background of the database is that it will be used to record and maipulate the results of observations that are conducted on members of teaching staff.
The client wants the ability to search for people that have not had an observation or have an outstanding observation. The observations are made on a termly basis (so there are three terms. 1, 2 and 3). When an observation is entered into the database, the term number is selected from a drop-down box.
I was woundering if anybody could help me with this as I am unter the impression that I am going to need to search for records that don't yet exist and I am unaware of how to do this in a database.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Many Thanks
Jason.

Speeding Up Searches

Mar 18, 2008

My Access DB has two Number fields and five Text fields (each having field size of 200). They contain text. The DB is organised year-wise. I have now crossed 15000 records. I find that the search is very slow. Search is done on all these text fields for each word typed. Some one suggested that I index the fields to speed up the search. When I tried to change the indexes to Yes, it didnt accept. Is there any other way to speed up search?

As an alternative, I created an append query to append records of the year I select in my form to another table so that I can search that table instead of the main table which contains all years records. But the append query is not appending records.

Any solution would be appreciated

is there any way to setup so I could say search for "Test" and it would find "test" properly? Or even to the extreme where I searched for "Tes*" and it came back with the "test" entry.
