Hyperlink To Database Using Workgroup File
Jan 10, 2008
Is there anyone out there that can help me with this problem. I want to create a hyperlink in MS Outlook to my database file using my workgroup. The problem I'm having is when I put the following: file://"N:DbaseFilesSCC_Dbase.mdb" that works. It will open Access to that dbase file. But if I include the workgroup file associated like this: file://"N:DbaseFilesSCC_Dbase.mdb" /WRKGRP "N:DbaseFilesCSS_Issues.mdw" it doesn't work. Can someone please tell me why. I've been struggling with this for days now. I can't find any solutions.

Hi,
I am trying to setup User Level Security around a Purchase Order Database that I created. Using the Wizard I was able to setup different users with different permissions.
However, as I found out the hard way (but I did recover it), 'joining' a PC to a my new security workgroup forces all Access databases on the PC to use this.
Is there a way to force just this one Access .mdb file to use the newly created PO Workgroup security file ?
I am aware of setting up a shortcut to point to thesecured db. Ie: "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficemsaccess.exe" /wrkgrp "C:PO FormsMyWorkgroupFile.mdw" "C:PO FormsMyDB.mdb" /user
But despite the above shortcut, couldn't users just find out where it points to (by looking at the Properties of the shortcut), and open the .mdb file based on that ?
Thanks !

We have an old Access 97 database with a workgroup file. The problem was that the machine was upgraded and the software was changed to XP. They support guys moved all files to the new PC except the the workgroup file. We can't fine a backup of the w/g file.
I am unable to upgrade the database to access 2002 because of the permissions.
What is the easiest way to get past this stumble block.
Thx

Present
Go to user computer, and then manually to join the workgroup.
Is this possible?
Send email to new user.
Join workgroup using a zip file. When file is un-zip the user automatically joins the workgroup and places a short cut on there desktop.
Not asking for to much, you think.

Hi,
I setup user-level security on the database. the workgroup file was deleted by somebody.
How can I open the database?
Because I create the same name for workgroup group file and input the same WID. It did not restore the original one I lost.
Right now, the database cannot be opened.
Please let me know how to solve.
Thanks.

Hey all,
I was wondering if any of you guys know how to specify a custom workgroup file in a shortcut to my database.
This is what I've got in my shortcut:
C:TESTTEST.mdb /w "C:TESTSECURITYFILE.MDW"
Basically I want access's system.mdw to remain the default mdw for access but want my mdb to use a different mdw.
Many thanks!

This is more of a point of interest then a question, at work, Access defaults to a central workgroup file, so all Access files opened on a work machine will prompt for a user name and password, and only let you in if you get it right... but if you move the work group file, even after it has been open using that workgroup file, it will just let you straight in and GIVE YOU ADMIN RIGHTS!
No one really seems to know about this... does it happen if you manually set the workgroup file? Or is this just a security hole if you rely on the default? I'm not sure yet, haven't tested, but i fell people should be made aware (happens for sure on Access2002, haven't tested it on any others)

Hi all,
I've set up security on my database before with great success, and now I'd like to use the same workgroup file (a copy with a new name and location) to secure a nes db.
I open the new db, and join my earlier created mdw file. I'm prompted with that I have joined my workgroupfile.
I then set permissions for each user in the workgroupfile, remove admin rights for the admin user account, and assign admin rights to my own account. I am also the owner of thr db.
I now run the security wizard, and I make no changes to any checkboxes.
This goes nicely, and the wizard closes after making a backup file.
I now want to re-join the system.mdw file, so I don't get prompted with the logon dialog when opening a new db or an unsecured db.
If I now try to start my new secured db by double-clicking on the secured mdb file it opens ?????
Where am I going wrong?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I created a Workgroup file (Project.mdw), assigned different Permissions to different Groups, and put different Users in appropriate Groups.
The above setup is working fine and just as required. But, if I remove or rename the Workgroup file, MS Access does not look for it, creates in its own Workgroup file and starts just as usual - without asking for the Password, or caring about the Permissions and/or restrictions set.
How can I make the database file bound to the MDW file, so that it does not open without it.

I recently created a workgroup for an access database and it works fine. But I have other versions of that same database (beta copies) for which I didn't create that workgroup file. They have different names than the first DB for which I made the workgroup.
But even when I open those beta copies it still launches the workgroup file (system.mdw) and prompts me to login. What do I need to do to revert these changes and go back to the unsecured version of my database?
Is it as simple as deleting this file?
Thanks in advance,
Angelo

Hello all
First of all, I'd like to thank everyone who's a member and has helped someone at some point within the forums! I'm quite new to Access and have received a massive amount of help on one of my first databases.:)
As the title points out, I'm not sure about the WIF. If I have two database in the same location, lets say their called DB1 and DB2 and I create a WIF for DB1, this wont affect DB2, will it? For example, it wouldn't create security for DB2?
Another senario is, if I have two databases nameed DB1 (basically one is a copy) within lets say two different subfolders within the same top level folder, because they are the same name, would this mean that they would both be affected by the same WIF?
I recently created a WIF like this and had to enter a password for both databases! to my consternation, I deleted the DB (along with the WIF) with which I made up the WID and I could access the Other DB without the Password! If I do create a WIF for a database, how can I stop using it as if I never created it in the first place?
Hope someone can help me! Thanks.

Hello people of access world forums. I've decided to design a simple access db with 2003 version but with 2000 compatibility and everything appear to work ok.
After designing and testing the db, I have set the Jet user-level security options as described in some documentation and set the startup options too for a "clean type" start. Everything is ok: I have created the workgroup in a new .mdw file, joined the workgroup, set the users, set the groups, protect the forms I wanted to. If I try to open the db, it asks for user and password and the db works as espected about security.
But if I delete, move or change the .mdw filename, the db turns accesible without the implemented security. Only the startup option works but no user is prompted and the protected items turns unprotected.
I would like to know how can I associate the .mdw to the .mdb so I can't access the .mdb if the .mdw file is not present (i.e. copying the .mdb to another computer or something).
Thanks in advanced.

Is it possible to follow a hyperlink to a file without using a file extension?
I have links being created based on the name of a file, but because I haven't used a file extension it crashes.
I know I can give the user a choice of what the file extension is and add it to the hyperlink, but it's an extra step, and another place for someone to make a mistake.
I'm potentially using 3 different file types, Word, Excel and PDF's.
The hyperlink works if I just reference a drive/folder, or if I add the file extension.

I have recently been working on the code below and I have neally completed what I want to do.
Private Sub H_Enter()
Form!H = "hyperlink#E:WORKSPEC PROJECTWORKSPECS" & Form!S & Form!PC & Form!extension & "#"
End Sub
What I want to do is have the file location (bit I have bolded) stored in another form or table and have the code read it from there as the file locations may change, rather than having to enter it for each line I just want to enter it once and then as and when it changes I just change the one line but it changes all the hyperlinks
hope this makes sense.

Im developing a database for work, I would like to provide a link on a form to run an external program. The form is call frmProfile. The table is called tblProfile and the hyperlink field is called link.
I would like a diaglog box to appear where the user can browse for the file and select it. Ive found various scripts but with my vb skills being very basic its no wonder im getting no joy.
I should add... each record has its own associated file. Its cctv footage which runs from the cctv systems own proprietary software. So its an individual filefor each record not just a program.

I have a form, and on that form I have a textbox called RefDwgNo (user not allowed to make changes...just for viewing). Displayed in this textbox is the name of a file (without the .pdf extension). I changed the textbox to 'is hyperlink' and added to OnClick- this code:
Private Sub RefDwgNo_Click()
FollowHyperlink "***private***engineering_data***Private***Des ignFitoutLabel Plate\_LATEST REV"
End Sub
The user needs to actually open the .pdf file, not the folder its located in. How do I add the file name from this textbox to the code above?

A have a table with many records and each record has a hyperlink to a document. Based on some criteria i want to attach the hyperlink file to an email. Don't want to have to do this manually. Is there anyway i can write code to go and get the hyperlink file and then attach the physical file into the email? This could result in 1 file being attached, 13 files being attached, 0 files etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,

Hello everyone and happy New year.
Ii have a database running on Access 10.0, I am using the insert hyperlink dialog box (access by Ctrl K) to allow users to insert a hyperlink to a file (could be any sort of file), into a text box.
The problem I have is most of the files are held many directories above where the database is (we have a BAD directory policy, 10's of folders within folders) and it gets a little painful to get the user to go up so many levels, due to the hyperlink dialog opening in the "current folder" view, ie where the db is located.
Simple quest, or so I thought. Can I change the default directory "Current Folder" that the dialog box starts in ?
I have already tried chdir"c:" but to no avail.......not that obvious then...
All help greatfully received...
Any help greatly received......

I have a query that combines few different tables in order to create a View (Query) that is then used to by and Excel sheet to update a list. The Excel is dynamical updated when new data is inputted in the Access Tables.
But one of the fields in a query is combination of path name and report name (another filed in one of the tables) that crate a complete path to a file that contains some additional information.
Now since the Excel is updated dynamical and users of this Excel sheet are not very advanced. I waned to make it easy for them to just click on the location of the file and the file opens up. But I am not able to make the Query that contains the file destination hyperlinked.
I am using Access 2007

i have a table of calls, with a field called "link to file".
i have a form where staff fill in their calls and when they have completed the call there is an option to insert a hyperlink to where the file is stored.
i previosuly had an attachemnt there but the database would just grow and grow so now its prefered there is a link to where the files are kept.
i just dont know how to set it up, i have tried adding in a text field and setting it to hyperlink which does work but on the form the user has to right click the button and edit hyperlink to place it in - is there an easier way of just clicking the button and it brings up a folder location where you select the file and it saves it as a hyperlink into the table under linked to file?
