Problem Updating Main Form Control From Subform In Access 2003 Project (ADP)

Nov 30, 2005

I'm supporting some Access/VBA code which includes the following behavior:

When an update is made in a (linked) child form, the current date/time is written to a textbox on the main form via

Me.Parent!txtMod = Now

Likewise, the BeforeUpdate event of the main form updates the same field (and then does a bunch of form validity checks, possibly followed by a Save).

When we upgraded to Access 2003 from Access 2000, a problem erupted:

When the user returns to the main form (by clicking on any control outside the subform), the following message is issued: "This record has been changed by another user since you started editing it (etc.)..."

At this point the user must choose between "Save Record", "Copy to Clipboard" and "Drop Changes".

Conceptually, I see why this is happening (though I wonder why Access 2000 didn't flag it). The subform is the "other user". When the main form is returned to, it is "Dirty" (unsaved update), so the main form's BeforeUpdate event fires, and attempts to update the field again (Me.txtMod = Now). Since there is a pending change to the field, an error dialog pops up.

As a quick fix, I replaced the code in the subform with a flag ("Hey, I've been updated!"), which the main form checks on the Exit event of the subform control. But that seems a horrible solution. Surely there's a better way?

Notes:

1. It would be preferable to have the timestamp updated right away by the subform, though having it updated when the subform loses focus is better than nothing.

2. Since a subform is a control from the main form's perspective, I'm surprised that a change to that control doesn't render the main form "Dirty". I guess from a database standpoint it makes sense (the form's table isn't getting updated at all; just the subform's). But then, how does the main form know that the subform has been updated?

3. I tried catching the error via Form_Error. I can make the dialog not appear via "Response = acDataErrContinue", but unfortunately it defaults to dropping the changes (old and new), rather than saving the new.

Forms :: Updating Fields Via Code Not Updating Table

Dec 16, 2014

I have a form that has combo boxes and text fields (as well as sub forms). There is also a button linked to some code that says'

Private Sub cmdQuote_Click()
'Creates quote date and prints quote
Me.QuoteDate = Now()
Me.cbAgentID.Requery
DoCmd.OpenReport "Quote", acViewPreview, , "BookingID = " & Me.BookingID
End Sub

When the button is pressed the QuoteDate field (it is bound) should be be populated, but unfortunately it is not. I have played with refresh and requery but cannot derive a solution.

Table Problems Moving From Access 2003 -> Access 2007

Jun 19, 2007

Attached is a screenshot of the relationships in a database I built a couple of years ago. It's worked absolutely fine in Access 2003 and currently has over 18,000 customers with associated information in it.

However, when I open the database in Access 2007 the performance is awful. All the forms are very slow to respond when tabbing between form elements. I've experimented by reducing the number of form elements calling on related data on a given page and whilst this improves performance it reduces usability - something I don't want to compromise on especially since Access 2007 should be able to cope with this.

My next question is therefore whether I've got the most efficient underlying table design and I can't see any other way of doing it than my current method so I'd be grateful for any feedback or advice anyone has.

Merging Access Data Into Word 2003

Aug 29, 2007

Hi,
how do i get the current record form access 2003 to merge the data into word 2003 template that I created.

The code I'm using is :-

Private Sub Command313_Click()
Dim oApp As Object
Dim doc As Object
Dim strDocName As String

Set oApp = CreateObject("Word.Application")
oApp.Visible = True

strDocName = "K:Supported Living ServicesdatabaseDB-Personnel.dot"
Set doc = oApp.Documents.Open(strDocName)

doc.FormFields("Title").Result = Forms!Personal!Title
doc.FormFields("fristname").Result = Forms!Personal!firstname

Set doc = oApp.Documents.Add(strDocName)

End Sub

I'm using 2 fields here but will be adding a lot more once I got it working.

Thanks inadvance

Access 97 To 2003 Using Form Data In Query

Dec 12, 2005

I was just converted from 97 to 2003 this weekend. I have a query set up that links a field to a form to get the date entered in the form into the query. For example if I enter 12/31/04 on the form and run my query it is put in the field 12/31/04. But in 2003 it is just blank. The formula I used in 97 is

StartDate: [Forms]![Cash Flow]![Start Date]

Is there something new I should be using to get that to pull in?

General :: Updating Table Data With Data From Preceding Entry?

Jan 5, 2013

My question is this: I have a table where I'm entering employees' hours worked. Basically, it's something like this:

ID WorkerNumberDateworkedTimeStartTimeEnded
121/2/201310:00:00 AM3:00:00 PM
221/3/20132:00:00 AM11:00:00 AM
321/4/201312:15:00 AM11:30:00 AM
421/5/201310:25:00 PM11:00:00 AM
531/2/201311:00:00 AM3:30:00 PM
631/3/201312:00:00 PM10:00:00 PM
731/10/20137:00:00 AM4:00:00 PM

I have a query that (easily) determines how many hours an employee has worked on any given day. What I can't figure out at all, is how to write a query that can figure out how much time an employee had off in between shifts.

Thus far I'm able to run a query that separates this main table into individual workers by their id numbers, but can't figure out how to determine time off between shifts - as the last hour worked one day, and the first hour worked the next day are on two different lines (they are two different table entries).

I wanted to add a button onto the forms that would run a macro that would sort the data. Is there a macro in Access that can do this?

SQL Linked Table Problem- Access 2003

Jan 12, 2006

Hi all,

I set up three tables (pastoral, referral, confidential) all at the exact same time on our sql server, all have the exact same permissions and i am the owner of all three. Ecah have a primary key in the form of an autonumber.

When i link to these tables in access i can delete from both the pastoral and confidential tables but cant delete from the referral table (the smallest of the three with only 6 fields) and i get this message:

"The Microsoft Jet database engine stopped the process because you and another user are attempting to change the same data at the same time"

Ive tried:

Compacting and repairing
Recreating the table on the sql server
decompiling and recompiling with a compact and repair
redoing the table links
trying the table in a different database

and none of these things have solved my issue.

Its bizarre:

on the sql server i can add, edit, delete
in access i can add but cant edit or delete as i get a write conflict error message:

"This record has been changed by another user since you started editing it. If you save the record, you will overwrite the changes the other user made...."

Yet the overwrite option is greyed out and i only have the choice of copying to clipboard or dropping changes.

HELP!!!

im at a total loss as to what is going on, ive tried all the fixes i know and have come back to trying to fix the problem instead of starting it again due to the fact that recreating the table gives me the same problems.

Any ideas? all service packs are up to date and so is the jet engine...

cheers

greg

Importing Excel Table To Access 2003

Jan 22, 2007

Hi!

I was importing the large array of accounting data into Access from Excel through File - Get External Data - Import. Several columns contained tangible accounting data (e.g. registration numbers) that had different formats like "23423 34", "32-3545" and in some cases even contained letter constants. Therefore, I have assigned TEXT type to this column while importing and was sure that all values are going to be stored as text. However, what has happened is: 18307769 turned into 1.83078e+007! this means tangible accounting data that was used as a key field for further linking turned into bull&&$%! :-(

I know this problem is very simple, so please, can you give me a hint as to how do I solve it in the future.

Thank you in advance.
