Taking 1 Field From Multiple Records And Merging Into One Comma-delimited File
Oct 24, 2007
Hi.
Stupid question, but I have Access 97 database with ssn in each record.
I need to create a comma-delimted text file with these ssns.
When I use the export text file with a query that lists each record's ssn, it does not produce comma-delimited file.
How?

I have one Access Database and i want to import the flat file coming from Cisco Phone Logs, its a comma delimited that contains the column names in the first row, and in the second row, its the data type, then the succeeding rows contains the data of the logs which are in Comma separated values, I want to put it to my created table programmatically,I used Docmd.TransferText but this will not let me define the row which i wanted to start at row 3.
DoCmd.TransferText acImportDelim, , "tblImportTextFiles", Me.txt_SelectedDirectory & "/" & Me.lst_FilesInDirectory, -1
Attached is the text file i received from Cisco Call Log Applications.

I'm a new Access user. I'm looking for an easiest solution to combine more records into one, using comma delimited. Let's say that I have a table T1 with two columns Code and Client like this:
Code Client
X C1
X C2
Y C1
Y C3
Z C1
Z C2
Z C4
Z C5
I need to see those records in a Query, grouped by "Code" with the Client's value combined like this:
Code New
X C1, C2
Y C1, C3
Z C2, C4, C5

With microsofts article, I have made to store multi options value of a list box in a text box with comma. However, since these are IDs being stored, I want these values to run a query and get results also.
But I am confused since have never used comma like in query

I have inherited a database where technicians track equipment that has been repaired. In this database, there is a memo field where the technician lists all the part numbers he / she uses to repair the piece of equipment. This field was never reported against and was strictly used for reference. However, someone is coming to me now and asking that a report be generated with that information. Then she will separate those parts out on her end. because it is a free form field, the technician is not forced to put a comma between each part number. I was wondering if there is a way for the database to go through approximately 62,000 records and ensure that there is a comma between each part number? I was also wondering if there is way to program the database to automatically insert a comma after each part number.

I am linking to an SQL database that is designed in such a way that the problem description is recorded in multiple records. See a simplified example below. I want to run a query that will merge the information in the PROBLEM_DESCRIPTION and return only one record for PROB_ID 55678.
PROB_ID ORIGINATOR DATE PROBLEM_DESCRIPTION
55678 Jim 01/01/2015 While cleaning my computer, I noticed
55678 Jim 01/01/2015 the screen was cracked. I called
55678 Jim 01/01/2015 the IT department and they said I had
55678 Jim 01/01/2015 to write a work order. However it
55678 Jim 01/01/2015 was rejected without reason.

I have a table (let's call it "tableA) with about 7 fields. One of the fields contains information that I need to do a query on so that I may find specific payees, for example:
The field is called "Payee" and in that field for each record, the information could be "At&T", "A T and T" or "Abercrombie & Fi", but there is also other information in that field along with At&T, etc., so the field for a record may look like this:
A T AND T MOBILI A T AND T MOBILI 10 90034 Bill Pay
or
ABERCROMBIE & FI 3042 PP 10 9111 DIRECT
Is there a way to set up another table (let's call it tableB) to have all the Payees names (such as AT&T or whatever) in it and by the push of a button (maybe macro), have a query go out and find all matches from tableB in tablea?
So, basically have the query look in tableA and find all the matches from TableB. Please understand that tableA could have records that contain the same name, but spelled a number of different ways, for example, AT&T or A T and T or ATandT or ATT. Again these names may or may not be embedded in with other information in a field.
Or is there a way that an Access query can look into an external list and find the records, example:
Have a text (file) list with all the names (separated by a comma or space - AT&T, AT & T, Amercrombie and FI, Abercom&Fitch, etc. Now have a query go to that list and find all records that match in my tableA?

I'm in the process of creating a database to track campaign contributions, and I'm kind of stuck.
I've created tables for the citizens, the candidates, and the contributions to the candidates. Now I'm trying to populate them with an Excel spreadsheet. The problem is I have no clue on how to split the Excel file so the appropriate parts go into each table.
The spreadsheet contains:
Name, address, etc. - This needs to go into the Citizens table
Names of candidates individuals contributed to - This needs to go into the candidates table.
Dollar amounts and dates of contributions - This needs to go into the contributions table.
Each citizen may have made multiple contributions to multiple candidates.
The easy way would be for everything to be in one table, but that would be a bad database design, right? Here's a shortened version of how my tables are designed:
Citizens: Name, contact info, etc. of citizens
Candidates: Name, party affiliation, etc. of candidates
Contributions: Candidate (fk is pk of Candidate table), Citizen (fk is pk of citizen table), contribution date, and contribution amount.
I appreciate the assistance, as I'm getting really frustrated.

We are a non-profit that does blind mailings for our membership drive. The company who we buy names and addresses from sends us a delimited file that has these fields as the headings
" ID, FULLNAME,COMPANY, ADR1, ADR2, CITY, STATE, ZIP, FIPS"
Once they send out the mailings, people then send in back a remit slip with a contribution that gets scanned through a program that creates a file that gives us these titles
"ALT ID, AMOUNT PAID, RUN DATE, TENDER, FUND, PURPOSE, SOLICITATION, MEMBERSHIP QUESTION, MEMBER TYPE, CONSTITUENT TYPE, SEGMENT"
The "ALT ID" and "ID" are the same in both tables.
I need to find a way to merge the tables and combine the fields that have the same ID # , and then have it create a csv file that reads like this (see below) for only the files of the people that responded so that I can import it into our membership software.
"Alt ID","Title","First Name","Middle Name","Last Name","Suffix","Address1","City","State","ZIP","ct y_code","Amount Paid","Run Date","Tender","Fund","Purpose","Solicitation","Me mbership Question","Member Type","Constituent Type","Segment"

I have a table which has each claim as a single record. A client wishes us to provide the data in a format that lists the each procedure on its own line. I have attached a highlevel example of what the data currently looks like and what the query results should look like.So I need to create a query that would repeat the Claim Number and place all the Procedure fields into one field.

Im trying to work out the best way to combine results from a table. Not knowing the correct terminology I didn't want to post in a specific section of the forum until its clear in my head.So I have a query currently which shows the entries into my database for example (these aren't the column names precisely as I know some are reserved words its just to demonstrate):
UserA - Hours - Date - ProjectA
UserB - Hours - Date - ProjectA
UserA - Hours - Date - ProjectB
UserA - Hours - Date - ProjectB
UserB - Hours - Date - ProjectA
UserA - Hours - Date - ProjectA
What I am trying to do is combine UserA's entries with ProjectA and UserA's entries with ProjectB (seperatly) and UserB's with ProjectA and UserB with Project B (again seperatly). So the end result would show a total of User A's hours on Project A and separately ProjectB and the same for UserB.

I've got an access table with six fields, all of which are text fields. I have set up an export specification file in order to export the table as a tab delimited txt file. However, when I export, the output file is not lined up in columns!
What I am seeing is:
1 A BB CC DD EE
2 f GG H I J
3 kk LLMM NN O
4 PP Q R S T
I've tried a manual exort, using the Advanced tab for my specifications, with the same results.
If anyone can lend some ideas or suggestions, I would be very thankful.
Thanks in advance..... looking forward to your replies!

Let me preface this question with... I DID NOT CREATE NOR DO I HAVE ANY CONTROL OVER THE FILE I'M NEEDING TO IMPORT INTO ACCESS.
I've got a situation where I'm needing to normalize a delimited .CSV file on a routine basis. The .CSV file has 369 fields. When normalized correctly, the true data should only be about 60 fields.
I didn't think this would be such a hard thing... just import the first 255 fields into one table, and the remaining fields into another table. Then, using a query... normalize the database as necessary.
I've scoured this topic all over... I've seen solutions for "fixed width" files, but not delimited. The only helpful thread I've found says that this is possible only through very complicated parsing through the file.
That's where I'm stuck... This is definitely over my head. If anyone has any help on this I sure would apprecaite it.

i have a small table, about 14,000 records. currently all the dates in the table are YYYY-MM-DD 00:00:00. so 2007-2-28 00:00:00
I built a query and set the format to MM/DD/YYYY when I run the query the date showed correctly 02/28/2007 (no time stamp). However when I did the export it exported to the TXT file as 2007-2-28 00:00:00 (notice the months is only 1 character and it added the time stamp and it exported as the table format, not the query format)
I need to export this to a tab delimited file to send to another person. They are specifying MM/DD/YYYY (no time extension) and two characters for month and day regardless of day, i.e 02 not 2 etc.
I looked at access help, and have done a quick search, and I can not figure out how to do this.
Any help would be appreciated

I need to export a .dat file with delimited format (using ";")
I have tried the following:
DoCmd.TransferText acExportDelim, "ED File", "Employee Data Output", "c: estfilesfile1.dat", False, ""
But when I execute the code the following error is shown:
Run-time error '3027'
Cannot update. Database or object is read-only
Using the same structure "DoCmd.TransferText" but with the .txt extension in the file works perfect.
Also I have tried export the .dat file using DoCmd.OutputTo, but even if the export is done, the format is not kept.
How can I export the .dat file keeping the delimited format needed?

I am able to successfully export data from an Access 2010 Query to a Tab Delimited Text file without difficulty. My problem is that the Query includes several 'tick boxes'. The resulting text file shows the text boxes as 1 or 0 as appropriate. What I actually require is a Y/N result. To achieve the required Y/N result requires some fiddly find and replace editing which is complicated by the fact that the query also contains telephone numbers incorporating 1 & 0, This then requires further editing of individual records to convert misplaced Y/N back to 1/0. Is their any way that one can force the export to convert text boxes to Y/N rather than 1/0.

I'm trying to import a pipe delimited text file into a table. I can import the entire table using the following code, but I only get one column of data (the entire data set in one column). If possible I would like to import with the columns defined or if not possible use some code for a function similar to text to columns.
Code:
DoCmd.TransferText acImportDelim, , "tblTest", "C:Work2015PPVMasterData.txt"

A little background. I need to export the results of a query I use to build a report. For Print Master software I need the "Field Names" in the text file as well as the data for a Mail Merge in Print Master (PM).
"The field name information in the file you have specified is missing or not correctly formatted. The first line of the file must contain the database field names. Make sure the "Export Field Names" (or similar) option is selected in the program from which you are exporting data."
Trouble is, when trying to export the report or query, Access has no "Export Field Names" option. It works if I first export to Excel and then from Excel to "txt" then to Printmaster. I would like to eliminate the Excel step. Therefore, how do or can I get Access Export to transfer the "Field Names" along with the field data?

I'm trying to import a text file with 273 fields into two tables. I've been able to do this with the code I found on an old thread and I'm now trying to accomplish everything with one step. Dim rst As ADODb.Recordset
Dim rst2 As ADODb.Recordset
Dim strFile As String
Dim strInput As String
Dim varSplit As Variant
Dim intCount As Integer

So I have two tables. One table "tbl_SRVASSET" lists out servername, serialnumber and asset tag. Second table "tbl_SRVNIC" list out the same servername, IPAddress and IPAddressTypeDesc.
The issue is that I have records in the "tbl_SRVNIC" with the same server listed numerous times (because it has 2 or 3 NIC's). So there is obviously a one to many relationship betweeen the two tables (common I guess). What I'm trying to do is be able to take the servers in the "tbl_SRVNIC" table and a new table or create a query with a single record for that server and have all 2, 3, 4 or maybe more IPAddress's assigned to them listed in the same record. This is what I'm having trouble with...
The end result is that after I've got this new table that lists only a single server and it's associated NIC's in the same record I can then combine that data with the "tbl_SRVASSET" via a basic query so my end result is a brand new table "tbl_SRVDETAIL" that looks like this:
SERVERNAME, SERIALNUBMER, ASSET, SERVER NIC1 IPADDRESS, SERVER NIC1 IPADDRESSTYPE DESC, SERVER NIC2 IPADDRESS, SERVER NIC2 IPADDRESSTYPE DESC, SERVER NIC3 IPADDRESS, SERVER NIC3 IPADDRESSTYPE DESC, (and maybe more columns if there are more, but that is a variable as some servers have 2 NIC's, Some with 3 or more so...).

I have been having a hard time getting the datasheet to update - I've tried several methods (refresh, requery, repaint, etc). Even pressing the "Refresh All" button on access takes 1 or 2 refreshes before my data is updated.
