Modules & VBA :: How To Get Autonumber ID Before Update / Save Record

Mar 27, 2015

I wanted to get the autonumber ID before a record was saved to the table. My fields are on a form that is linked to the table. Maybe my solution is not the most elegant but it seems to work.

I messed around and came up with this solution: it creates the next record and captures the autoID then increments it and creates the record we will actually use. Since we know the current autoID we know 100% the next will be the current+1

Code:

' Code by Witchcraftz
' Button event to add new record
Private Sub cmdAddRecord_Click()
Dim strID As String

Entering Data In A Form - Update Autonumber On Two Tables?

Jul 19, 2006

Hello,

My first post is on something that is troubling me. I have a Form acting as the display and entry point for data for a contact list, which is composed of two Tables as follows:

Contact - (text fields including: first name, last name, phone number home, phone number work, etc)

Industry Role - (yes/no tick boxes including: film, photographer, audio engineer, producer, reporter, etc)

The two Tables have a one to one relationship based on the URN field which is an autonumber. My problem is that when someone enters say a name, and then ticks a box, the autonumber will add two entries because it seems to see the first table then the second tables as sequential, and not the same thing. How do i go about making a form that can enter new records the same autonumber for two connected Tables?

Controlling Autonumber Field - Start Autonumber From 1 Everyday (Composite Key)

Nov 21, 2013

I have two tables linked to each other in one to many relationship. Instead of auto number, the date and shift (Text) is being used as the primary keys (Composite Primary Key). Here is the tables structures,

Payouts Table:
Date: Primary Key
Shift (Day or Night) : Primary Key

Bills Table:
Date: Primary Key
Shift (Day or Night): Primary Key
Autonumber: Primary Key

The tables Payouts and Bills has one to many relationship. One payout row can have many bills. The problem is that I want to start the Autonumber in bills table everyday from 1. As date and shift are different for every day so even if i start bills from 1 everyday, it wont make same primary key. I can do it manually but I want to make it automatically.

Autonumber Query

Jan 27, 2007

Hi. I have to create a autonumber sequence that restarts when there is a change in a previous column of the table. An example of what I am trying to achieve is:

blue 1
blue 2
blue 3
green 1
pink 1
pink 2
red 1
red 2
red 3
red 4

I would appreciate any advice how this can be done. Thankx.

Adding 'Autonumber' To Query On The Fly.

Jun 21, 2007

Hi all,
I have this select query that pulls out the last 13 distinct values in in descending order from a table. However in order for me to play with these values I need an ID number and ideally i'd like to do this on the fly rather then do a make table and then use that.
Is there any way of adding a 'autonumber' column to a select query on the fly in so that it can be used as reference ?

Thanks in advance,
Mitch...

? Create An 'autonumber' In A Query Result

Apr 18, 2006

Hi,

example:

SELECT tblFalls.Guest_Name, [Account_Number], Count(tblFalls.Account_Number) AS Falls
FROM tblFalls
GROUP BY [Account_Number], [Guest_Name];

Gives me:

Smith, Joe; M698, 1
Blinke, Frank; M686, 2
Neal, Bobbie; M648, 1

I need ot to give me,

1, Smith, Joe; M698, 1
2, Blinke, Frank; M686, 2
3, Neal, Bobbie; M648, 1

each time i run the query i need to list that guests, their number of falls and assign each unique guest a number starting with 1 on up...

How?
yes, yes, i know how to do it in a report, but I need right now to be able to do it in a query alone.. anyone?

I tried:
SELECT Sum(1+), Guest_Name, Account_Number, Count(Account_Number) AS [Falls]
FROM tblFalls
GROUP BY Account_Number, Guest_Name;

=p no luck.. though it looks neat.

I also tried writing a function

Public Function GetQryNum() As Integer
If IsNull(gQryNum) Or gQryNum < 1 Then
gQryNum = 1
GetQryNum = gQryNum
Else
gQryNum = gQryNum + gQryNum
GetQryNum = gQryNum
End If
End Function

SELECT GetQryNum() AS GuestIndex, Guest_Name, Account_Number, Count(Account_Number) AS [Falls]
FROM tblFalls
GROUP BY Account_Number, Guest_Name;

But all i get is a '1' in every row.

Any ideas?

Fake An Autonumber Field In A Maketable Query

Jul 15, 2006

Hi Guys,

8 posts on the subject over a number of years and the answer seems to have been no, you can't have an auto number field in a maketable query.

Is there any reasonable way to create a sequential count of the records shown in the maketable query, not the underlying records?

Background:
I have a maketable query that selects fields from 2 tables which are ordered in a specific way. The sigma button is clicked to reduce this recordset to unique entries and this is what goes into the created table.

This newly created table is a row heading for a pivot table query and I want it ordered by the method used in the query. An autonumber or some method of counting/incrementing the records would do the trick.

I am currently creating the table and then adding the Autonumber field manually, which is hardly a solution at all. :confused:

An afterthought before I post: The reason I want the autonumber field is that the pivot table shows the records in alphabetical order rather than the order the table holds the records. Is there any way of forcing the pivot table to use the records as ordered in the table. A note of caution here, I get very confused when dabbling with pivot tables. :eek:

Any thoughts/solutions welcomed. And if I'm asking the wrong question, let me know! :)

Problem With Append Query And Autonumber Field

May 1, 2008

Hi everybody,

I am appending the information I have in one table to another. The first table's name is Videos and it only has 5 records. When I append the information from the other table which has some of the fields of the Videos table (but doesn't have a primary key), the new records in the Videos table have as primary key value (the autonumber field) values that start from 44699657. Why is this happening?

Queries :: Sort Order In Query Based On ID (Autonumber)

Sep 10, 2013

This is something I occasionally see in Access and has been bugging me for quite a while.

As an example, when I have a table (all text fields except for the ID field which is an Autonumber with a unique index - ie just what Access creates when you import data) and I try to make a new table from a query by indexing the Autonumber field in descending order (ie to reverse the order of the table), it doesn't work properly.

So if I have:

SELECT [mytable].* INTO [mytable sorted] FROM [mytable] ORDER BY [mytable].[ID] DESC;

When I preview the data (ie run the select query to have a look at it), it looks fine.

When I change the query to a 'Make Table' and I then I check the table it makes, the order changes part-way down the list, so looking at the ID field it runs from number 2669 down to 2087 correctly, then it goes from 1960 to 1956, then 1803 to 1799, then 1751 to 1747, etc etc etc. After a while it seems to correct itself again, and orders normally down to #1

I'm using Access 2002.

Using Criteria To Update Fields In A Update Query

Nov 29, 2006

Ok, i have a question about update queries.I have two tables (I'll call table 1 and table two for simplicity) and an update query. I want to get some data from table one to table two (via an update query). But in table two there is a field that isn't in table one but i want to add a value to that field via the query.My question is, can i manually put into the query what data to add to a field instead of/aswell as using data from other tables.I hope you understood my questions.Cheers

Update Query Won't Update In Access 97

Feb 10, 2008

I am trying to remove random characters from a field. The field [assycode] contains a string similar to say, FGEJBF1 or ABFGYRUKC I want to remove any occurrence of "F1" normally at the end of the string but not always at the end. I used: Like "*f1*" to find the correct records, that worked fine, I then used [Assycode]-" f1" in the update to box, It wants to update 146 records I click ok then it says It couldn't due to a type conversion error. Just messing around I tried adding "F1" to these records using [Assycode]+" f1" and it worked fine. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance

Using Update Query To Update Values

Update Query Will Not Update!

Aug 16, 2005

I have two tables, each has a "status" for a project. In the left table there is only one instance of each set, but in the right hand table, each set may be used more than once by different Projects.

I need the Status field of the left table to be set to "Assigned" if ANY of the sets assigned to projects in the right hand table are "Assinged"

Here is the update query I have setup but when it runs, it updates "0" rows.

8 is the id for the status "Assigned" in the SetStatus table
2 is the id for the status "Assigned" in the Status table.

Queries :: Update A Query Based On Results From Another Query Using Count Function

Apr 2, 2013

I run a physical therapy office and patients come in for treatment either 3, 4 or 5 times per week. My database is used to track these frequencies (among other things).

I have 3 queries which count how many patients come in 5, 4 and 3 times/week.

In my main table I have fields called "how many 5's", "how many 4's" and "how many 3's".

I have tried to design an update query which will update those fileds in my main table to reflect the counts in the 3 queries mentioned above.

(I'm not using SQL view, I'm using the query design view)

In the "update to:" row, I use the Build function and locate the count I'm looking for.

Problem: when I run the query I get the error: Operation must use an updateable query.

Update Query - Operation Must Use An Updateable Query

Jan 8, 2007

Hi,

As an Access novice I am trying to do a simple update of a table but keep getting an annoying error:

I have 2 tables - Products and OrderDetails

Products
ProductID
Description
StockQuantity

OrderDetails
OrderID
ProductID
Quantity

Basically I want to update the Products.StockQuantity column to subtract the sum of all orders in the OrderDetails table.

So if Product A started with a StockQuantity of 5, and there are 3 Order_Details record, each with a quantity of 2, the query should update the Products.StockQuantity record to -1.

I have tried a few permutations such as:

UPDATE PRODUCTS
set PRODUCTS.StockQuantity = PRODUCTS.StockQuantity - (
SELECT SUM(OrderDetails.Quantity)
FROM ORDERDETAILS
WHERE ORDERDETAILS.ProductID = PRODUCTS.ProductID);

but I seem to keep getting the following error:
"Operation must use an updateable query"

Help - I'm tearing my hair out here!!

Thanks,

Keith

Added A Table To My Query, Now My Query Will Not Let Me Update It.

May 2, 2007

Okay I have two tables in a query.tblMain and tblStatestblStates has a control number and a state name.tblMain has the same control number as well as a bunch of customer info.The query is simply tblMain.* and then the state name from tblStates.It pulls the information correctly when I link the control number. However, I cannot update the information.If it just has the tblMain table in the query then I can update everything. As soon as I add the tblStates I can't update anything, even if I don't link the two together. Can someone help me figure out what is going on?The reason I have to have a seperate table is that this is for pulling a contracted state which can be different than the customers state, and the only way it is listed in our system is by number so it has to use this number as a reference and then pull up the state name.
