[298] SQLServer Error: 258, TCP Provider: Timeout Error [258]. [SQLSTATE 08001]
Mar 11, 2008
I've received this error twice over 2 days in the SQL Agent error log during off-hours from a server which has not had any changes to it in the last few months (once at 3:32AM and the next day at 3:46AM. I've been able to tie it to log-shipping backup jobs (all of which run under the SQL Service domain account) which run every minute. It seems to be only momentary, as the next attempt a minute later is successful.
I get the same set of messages for each database for the same time which look like this:
Date 07.03.2008 3:31:51 AM

I can't find any documentation on these errors on the web or MSDN site. Can I chalk this up to possibly "winking" connection to our domain controller? We've never had these messages before, and our LAN department swears that there have been no upgrades to the network or domain controller servers recently.

Hi all,
I copied the following code from MSDN2 bcp Utility:
bcp AdventureWorks.Sales.Currency2 in Currency.dat -T -c
and executed it in my C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90ToolsBinn>.
I got the following errors:

SQLState = HYT00, NativeError = 0

Please help and tell me what wrong with this BCP execution or with the database, and how to make this BCP working.
Thanks,

When running the etl I'm getting the error: <SSIS Task>: Shared Memory Provider: Timeout error [258] ; followed by the message "Communication link failure".
What is special about this message that it happens on a SQL Execute task (random task) and the Timeout is after 2 minutes.
When executing the packages separatly it is working fine. The SQL Tasks that are failing are also quit heavy, but reasonable and takes between >2min and 10 - 15 min. Statements are stored procedures that puts an index on 3 mil. records or update statements,...
I had a look to all my (SSIS-etl)Â timeouts and they have the default value 0, the "remote query timeout" of the server is set to 10 minutes. According to me, these are the only one that exists?
There are 2instances on the server each instance has 24GB allocated, the server has 64 in total. Also when the etl runs (that results in an error) no other etl is running on the 2 instances. I'm working with the oledb sql server native client11.0 provider : SQLNCLI11.1.

Hi,
Basically the error that I am getting is in our test automation when running as non-admin on the box (regular user). We use .Net C# SQLConnection class to connect to SQL express 2005 impersonating with admin credentials. After getting the connection we try to execute a select command and it some time fails with following error:
A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The handle is invalid.) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlInternalConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection) at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.ThrowExceptionAndWarning(TdsParserStateObject stateObj) at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParserStateObject.ReadSniError(TdsParserStateObject stateObj, UInt32 error) at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParserStateObject.ReadSni(DbAsyncResult asyncResult, TdsParserStateObject stateObj) at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParserStateObject.ReadPacket(Int32 bytesExpected) at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParserStateObject.ReadBuffer() at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParserStateObject.ReadByte() at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.Run(RunBehavior runBehavior, SqlCommand cmdHandler, SqlDataReader dataStream, BulkCopySimpleResultSet bulkCopyHandler, TdsParserStateObject stateObj) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDataReader.ConsumeMetaData() at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDataReader.get_MetaData() at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.FinishExecuteReader(SqlDataReader ds, RunBehavior runBehavior, String resetOptionsString) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.RunExecuteReaderTds(CommandBehavior cmdBehavior, RunBehavior runBehavior, Boolean returnStream, Boolean async) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.RunExecuteReader(CommandBehavior cmdBehavior, RunBehavior runBehavior, Boolean returnStream, String method, DbAsyncResult result) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.RunExecuteReader(CommandBehavior cmdBehavior, RunBehavior runBehavior, Boolean returnStream, String method) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteReader(CommandBehavior behavior, String method) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteReader()
This happen only in the non-admin scenario mentioned above. Any idea what is triggering this?
Thanks in advance for all replies.

I have set up replication on two SQL Servers (6.5), SP5a, on NT 4.0 (SP3). The Distribution Task is failing with the following error:
08001[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][dbnmpntw]Specified SQL Server not found.
I am using standard security in a workgroup environment. I have my trusted connection setup and I am using named pipes. I had this process working on our test servers but when I tried to implement it into production I received the above message.
One thing I noticed is that in the SQL EM on the Publisher I am not able to register to the Subscriber unless I use an Advance Connection with TCPIP Sockets in the Client Configuration Utility. The same applies in the SQL EM on the Subscriber I am not able to register to the Publisher unless I use an Advance Connection with TCPIP Sockets in the Client Configuration Utility. Please give me some advice. Thanks.

Hi Guys:
Our company wanted to try out SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition (64 Bit). So, we were on free trial of the Enterprise Edition for past 5 months. After which we decided to go for SQL SERVER 2005 Standard Edition (64 Bit). And, Last week, we installed the SQL Server Standard Edition (64 Bit) on our server. After installation, everything was restored as before.
The version we are on right now is:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.3054.00 (X64) Mar 23 2007 18:41:50 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Standard Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 2)
Strangely, a job which ran fine till then is failing with the following error: And, to be more specific, when this job is run manually in the form of a stored procedure using the query optimizer it runs fine. But, when its executed as a scheduled job on SQL Agent, it fails. The History logs record the following error.
Error :
The OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "LV-SQL2" reported an error. Authentication failed. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 7399) Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "LV-SQL2". [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 7303) OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "LV-SQL2" returned message "Invalid authorization specification". [SQLSTATE 01000] (Error 7412).
I tried everything possible, even recreated the job, but, no avail.
I also considered the possibility if SQL Agent login account did not have enough permissions. So, I changed the SQL Agent login to windows authentication, but the job still fails. So, its the problem has nothing to do with login accounts either.
For the record, I have cross checked all these too.
1. Enabled the remote connections in Surface Area Config
2. Added local server login to remote server login mappings.
3. Checked 'Rpc' and 'Rpc Out' under server options. Also, the Connection Timeout and Query Timeout have been set to zero (0).
Any suggestions pointing towards problem solution appreciated.
Thank you.

We have an application that connects to SQL 2005 thru ODBC with the following string:
driver=SQL Server;server=server1;database=db2005;uid=serveruser;pwd=pwd1;
When our administrators login on the workstation the application works well. But when ordinary users login they get the following error. (We only have 1 domain)
SQLState: 28000
SQL Server Error: 18452
Login failed for user ". The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
Then the standard SQL Server Login window pops up asking for the Login ID and Password. On the window the 'Use Trusted Connection' is checked and the name of the user on the workstation appears on the LoginID. What we do is uncheck the 'Use Trusted Connection' then login using the credentials above.
Need help on this one please. Thanks.

We experience the 40 error when our Asp.net code runs under IIS and uses named pipes to a sql server 2005 named instance.
We've tried all suggestions found on blogs and KB articles such as making sure the named pipes protocol is enabled, making sure the Browser service is started, making sure Allow Remote Connections is enabled, making sure we're not using Asp.Net 2.0 membership providers, and the list goes on and on.
We boiled it down to a simple test scenario. We open a SqlConnection to the sql 2005 box in the code with the intention of binding a datareader to a gridview, but it never gets that far because the connection.Open() fails.
If we run this test application as a virtual directory in IIS and Asp.Net 2.0, the connection.Open() fails.
If we run this test application from Visual Studio .Net using Cassini (PWS), the connection.Open() succeeds and binds to the gridview.
What could be causing the connection to fail under IIS but succeed under Cassini? We've tried setting IIS to run as a domain user and with digest authentication enabled. That made no difference.
Any help or insight is appreciated!

hi all
I realised this has been done to death, and so much information out there but I am still in a quandry.
I have had to rebuild my computer.
This is what I did
XP machine
using SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition
using Windows Authentication
NZ6(MSSQLSERVER)
straight default install all the way
unfortunately when ready to run reports from my instance(computer)
I received the error as in provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server
thought I had it all okayed but obviously something not right
so ended up unistalling then - did the following:
Load SQL Server from disc1 and start install
failed on alter Counter Registry key error
fixed this from KB article (known error that can happen)
restarted
Went to Windows Update
check IIS is installed - tick is on - IIS - admin tools - make sure asp2 is associated - yes ok
Then back to install sql server - there is no instance set up yet
Disk 2 and setup .exe
All ok on Reporting Services, Analysis etc.
But once again all seems fine but still getting the error:
connection is all fine in Management Studio - eg I can see tables etc
connection is all fine in Business Intelligence - eg I can preview my reports
I then can deploy up to - NZ6
open NZ6
eports
report is there fine - but just errors
some simple little tick that I have not done!!
I seem to have checked and rechecked everything and obviously doing another re-install does not seem a logical step from here.
I will continue to check but if someone jump in and advise please would be great.
cheers

Hi
I am creating a web site using Visual Studio 2008 & trying to connect to database on SQL Server 2000. My test connection is successful but while debugging the page I am getting this error :
" provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server "
Your suggestions on that will be appreciated.
Thanks
Ashok
