[MSSQL + VS.NET] Connection - Sleeping
Jul 20, 2005
Hello
I've prepared a small aplication in VS.NET and I use SqlConnection class.
Everything is ok, but when I'm trying to disconnect from server using
if (cnSQL->State != ConnectionState::Closed) cnSQL->Close()
there is still connection do server present. I have to close connection
because I'm trying to drop this database.
Have you ever heard about this kind of problem??

If an MS SQL 2005 Connection is sleeping in the activity monitor, does it mean it's not closed? I'm pretty sure it's closed, just want to confirm. Lately, our DB server got hammered with requests and it reached max-pool size (we implemented caching after that).

Hi all,
Why doesn't my connection to ms sql server 2005 work?
Get this error...
Error connecting to server. Server says: [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified
I set up a DSN which is working.(tested ok anyway)
What do I need to do?
Thanks.
PHP Code:
// Configure connection parameters
$dsn = "localhost";
$username = "training";
$password = "training2";
// Connect to DB
$db_link = odbc_connect($dsn, $username, $password)
or die('Error connecting to server. Server says: '.htmlspecialchars(odbc_errormsg()));
// Select Database
mssql_select_db('training_dub') or die('Error connecting to Database. Server says: '.htmlspecialchars(odbc_errormsg()));

I am new to MSSQL but have some experience with MySQL. Now, I am trying to connect to a recently installed MSDE 2000 SP3 on my box, using dbManager Professional, (a 3rd party manager) but all attempts to connect have failed.
The first error message when I start dbM is:
Connection failed:
SQLState: '42000'
SQL Server Error: '18456'
Login failed for user 'Administrator'
(There are no passwords assigned.)
There are successive error messages if I keep forcing the issue, with additional error indicators.
MSSQL is running and the .ini file contains these 2 lines:
BLANKSAPWD=1
SECURITYMODE=SQL
I have searched the web for solutions for all of the above messages, and implemented some logically sound advice, but these solutions, which worked for others, don't solve this problem for me.
The OS is XP Professional SP2
AMD 64 Sempron 1800+
1GB of RAM.
Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

Hi,
at first a few things about my system:
I use Visual Studio 2005 Pro on WinXP SP2 and I have recently installed MSSQL Server 2005 Express on my system.
I want to establish a connection to the MSSQL Server from C++ (not .NET) using ADO.
For this I use the following connection String:
Open(L"Provider=SQLNCLI;Server=FREECASTLE;Integrated
Security=SSPI;DataTypeCompatibility=80;MARS
Connection=True;",L"",L"",ADODB::adConnectUnspecified);
This works. But this is not exactly that what I wanted, because here
just my Windows Authentication is used. I want to be able to pass
username and password for users that are allowed to access the SQL
Server. Here my first confusion begins: I have the option to pass the username and password into the connection string (User Id and Password) or I guess that I can pass them also as parameter 2 and parameter 3. But with trying both of these options I get always a connection error that my specified Username is not be trusted ( I don't know how the message looks in the English version, because I have the german version), but I suppose you know what I mean.
Of course I have to create such accounts in the SQL Server before trying to login with them. I guess that I made something wrong when doing this. I started the Server Manager Studio and there I navigated into the Object Explorer. In the folder Security I created a new account for testing (using SQL Server Authentication). But I cannot use that account for logging in.
I have to admit that I am very new to the SQL Server thing, so I hope someone can help me or can give me hints on what to do better. I am very thankful for every reply...

Hallo
i'm experiencing an extremely slow connection from a WXPP Sp2 client to a MSSQL2000 running on a W2k server. The client is running a VB6 application that connect with Windows authentication: every form requesting data opens with a long delay at the first launch; next attempts run normally fast.
In the same LAN there are some others identical clients, all running fine.
Every other network activity from that client is ok.
Where should i start to investigate from?

Hi,
I have written an application in VB6 connecting to a SQL Server 2000 database using ADO. This app is running on the same computer as SQL Server.
What I am seeing now is that each day 2-3 new connections are being created by SQL and these connections have a "sleeping" status and "AWAITING COMMAND" command. Also, when double-clicking a
connection, it's last TSQL statement is empty... This way, connections are piling up.
Does anyone have an idea why this is happening and what I can do to avoid this ? Also, how can I determine what is causing this ?
Many thanks,
Jurgen Sanders

A developer came over and asked me a couple of things
1. Can C# not cleanup SPIDs and just open new ones lieing around
2. Do a large number of spids, even if they are sleeping, cause performance issues?
3. What's the Max # of spids sql server can handle?
BOL ain't too helpful right now

I am trying to make an ODBC connection to a MSSQL 2K server on a remote machine. I am using the SQL Server driver and can see the server in the drop down list when asked which server I would like to connect to. I am using SQL authentication over TCP/IP.
The error occurs when ODBC tries to connet to SQL server to obtain the default settings. The error I receive is as follows:
Connection Failed;
sqlstate '28000';
sql server error: 18456;
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'XXXX'
I have tried setting up alternate SQL Server users with varying security rights on the server but am not able to setup the ODBC connection.
I am setting the ODBC connection up on a windows XP SP2 machine.
The remote server is running Windows server 2003 (patched upto date) and MS SQL server 2K (SP3). The connection is over a LAN and does not pass through any firewalls (hardware or software). I can create the ODBC connection without issue locally on the server.
This is my first time creating an ODBC connection to a Windows 2003 Server and I am wondering if there is some additional config I may have missed out.
Many thanks.

I get this error.
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
Though I have read like child and made changes according to it.

Still says same error.
I am clueless how to do it.
Do any one know web based mssql editor where i can connect mssql?

I have processes running on the server that show a status of "sleeping" from sp_who and sysprocesses, however they are still running. I run sp_who over and over again and only occasionally the process status shows running, and then switches back to "sleeping" or "defwakeup". I know what all the statuses mean, I just don't know why a running process would ever show as "sleeping". The processes take a very very long time to run as well.
Thanks in advance,
Steve

Has there been anything wrong while setting up Sql Server ?

Hi all,
We have a web application with multiple users connecting to SQL Server 2005 database.
Once the users start using the system, I could see in the Process Info from the activity monitor with a several process with status as sleeping and command as Awaiting Command.
I have few questions regarding this for which simple answers would help me ( I searched and couldnt understand from the pages that explained the process information )
My questions are,
1. Does the processes with status sleeping and command as Awaiting Command are needed for the application even after the operations specific to them are complete?
2. Does these process affect the performance ?
3. Does killing these process would affect the application connectivity ?
4. Why do we get several process with status sleeping and command as Awaiting Command? Is this because of the front end programming errors ?
5. What should we do to avoid the increasing number of process with status sleeping and command as Awaiting Command?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
DBLearner.

Dear, Our ASP.NET scripts send SQL statements (as inline SQL or SP) to process the requested job. After the job execution, the process ID stays in the server and waits for next command with sleeping status.Since this process does not go away, next job adds another process and eventually, the server is overloaded with these processes and dies. How can I kill this sleeping processes?Regards,Echo

Hi
We just installed SQL service pack 4. I am now finding that when doing a sp_who2 active, there are a lot of connections that are blocked by itself. The common factor is they all have a status of 'sleeping'. The strange thing is that even though it shows the connection is blocked, it is in fact not and will still return results. Below is a snapshot of a portion of what the sp_who2 active returns:
SPID Status Login HostName BlkBy DBName
53 sleeping sa TRACKER 53 dbABC
58 sleeping sa TRACKER 58 dbCDE
64 sleeping sa TRACKER 64 dbSTA
66 RUNNABLE User12 PC24 . master
70 sleeping User5 ANALYSIS 70 dbBML
74 sleeping sa TRACKER 74 dbCDE
76 sleeping sa TRACKER 76 dbPTS
83 sleeping User5 ANALYSIS 83 dbANA
86 DORMANT User11 CPTDB . NULL
Has anyone seen this? Is it related to the installation of service pack 4? (We have installed the services pack on many other SQL servers, but have not come accross this before.

I am using SQL Server 2000. In Enterprise Mgr, under Management/CurrentActivity, I see a list SPIDs.I have a multi-tiered .NET web app that uses ADO.NET to connect to thedatabase. Each time a Stored Proc is called, a new connection is opened, thedata retreieved, and the connection closed and set to Nothing (in VB.NET).Yet, I see several (15 or so) SPIDs for the user ID that the web app uses toconnect to the database.The database is local and private, so I know all connections are from me.What does Status=SLEEPING Command=Waiting Command mean?What will happen when we get 1000's users on the web app?Is SQL doing some kind of connection pooling?

Has anyone done this and about pulled thier hair out?
I downloaded visual express for web development with sql express. Running fine. Like SQL so much, decided to pop for the Developer package. I don't know what I was thinking, maybe I was going to pay for popcorn for billy g & family in the home theatre that night...but I digress.
After much consternation and a 4:00 a.m. adventure, I managed to get rid of SQL Express and install the developer edition. Now were fine. Even ran the aspnet_regsql and set up the aspnetdb database.
I'm thinking, back to development here.
I select APP_DATE and if I try to add the ASPNETDB.mdf file I get the application is being used by another process. Please close all applications that might access this file and try again. So, I then try to create a new database file. I get this error:
Connections to SQL Server Files ( *.mdf) require the SQL Server Express 2005 to function properly.
I can create a connection to the aspnetdb database in the database connections. However, as I work with some of the new ASP NET Membership/Role code, I find it doesn't work.
Will most code work if the ASPNETDB.mdf is not set up int he APP_DATA section?
Come on Microsoft, I can't be the only shoe-string developer that is going to try this.
Has anyone done this and resolved how to get these two to play along.
If I upgrade to Visual Studio, will I still be straddled with SQLExpress.
Can I run SQLExpress side by side with SQL Developer addition?

Creating a web application. Running a simple query "SELECT username FROM vwCustomer"
vwCustomer is a view built on top of an Access DB which is set up as a linked server. Within SQL Server that view responds immediately. But when I try to access it from an ASP page it takes over 20 seconds to respond.
Used the following to create the linked server:
EXEC sp_addlinkedserver 'DBName', 'Jet 4.0', 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0', 'c:databasesdatabase.mdb'
GO
EXEC sp_addlinkedsrvlogin 'DBName', FALSE, NULL, 'Admin', ''
GO
The view is simply(this works fine in SQL Server):
SELECT * FROM DBName.db.dbo.customer
The ASP page:
SELECT * FROM vwCustomer
Can anyone give me a hint as to where the bottleneck is? Or how I can figure that out using SQL Profiler or something?
Please help!

Hi all.
I've had a web service developed in PHP5 running on an Apache webserver for the last 9 months. It handles a lot of XML requests and stores/reads from an MSSQL Server 2005 DB (Express, if that matters).
Occasionally, I will come across the error 'Could not connect to database'. Refreshing the page works 99% of the time removes the error and the system continues as normal. I'd say this is happening about 1/100 requests at the moment, and my client is steadily becoming more irritated by it.
As far as I know, the system settings are mainly stock. It was set up by another developer.
I'm out of ideas with regards to debugging this problem.
Can anybody shed some light, or some possible solutions?
Kind Regards,
Jomn

During our DR drill we found that the same code which used to run perfectly fine on our Primary Data Centre is running very slow on Disaster Recovery DB Server and there are Lot's of open transaction with sleeping status and waittype as 'AWAITING COMMAND'.CPU, Memory and disk utilization are good. The ping reply between the app server and the DB server is well within the limit's even blocking is not their, also nothing is reported in the error logs. We are using SQL server 2014 STD 64 BIT on Windows Server 2012.

I have to stop update statistics job manually once i come to office manually.
Once I have killed blocking sleeping query but then other sleeping query blocked it and so on.
